02. Brave New World

"Lily!".

Lily opened her eyes and looked at her surroundings in confusion, and realised she was standing in the middle of a field that was full of yellow sunflowers.

"Lily!".

Lily looked around in confusion, trying to see who was calling out to her, "Whose there?" she asked.

"The day is getting closer, Little Luna".

"What day?" a confused Lily asked.

"The day you and I will come face to face".

"Who are you?" Lily asked confused.

"You'll know when we meet".

"And how do I know it's you when I meet you?" Lily asked.

"You'll just know".

Lily gasped and sat up in her bed in shock, the dream she had extremely confusing her.

Damon sat in the Lockwood's office with Carol.

"So I understand John Gilbert has left town" Carol said, taking a sip of her tea, "Have they found the vampire that attacked him?".

"Well the Sheriff has asked me to take the lead on that" Damon informed, "And I promise you, I will get to the bottom of it".

"Which brings me to my next subject" Carol said, putting her cup down, "With Richard gone, I'll be acting as interim mayor until the elections, and I'm going to need someone to spearhead the Council".

"Hmm" Damon said, pretending to be oblivious to where Carol was taking this conversation.

"I'd like that person to be you" Carol informed.

"Whatever you need, Carol" Damon simply said, "As a founding family member, it's something that's close to me, so I would be honored to help keep this town safe from vampires".

Carol gave Damon a huge smile, both their attention suddenly went towards the door when Tyler, Mason and Lily's laughter was heard.

"Oh, jeez" Tyler said, entering his house with Mason and Lily.

"Is it safe to talk?" Damon asked Carol, as she stood up to close the door.

"It's my brother-in-law, Mason, he's still visiting" Carol informed, "I just don't want him to hear us, he didn't want any part of the council when he lived here and I see no reason to bring him into it now".

Damon nodded in understanding, he then focused his hearing outside, eavesdropping on the trio's conversation.

"I can't believe you dragged me out of bed for this" Lily complained to Tyler, out of breath from all the running they did.

"If I was going to go through this torture, so were you" Tyler teased, putting his arm around Lily.

"Back off you stink" Lily said, shoving Tyler away from her.

Tyler chuckled then turned to Mason, "What was that, like seven?" he asked.

"Six, I don't count the last one" Mason replied, "You crawled it".

"What?" Tyler asked.

"Think Grandma Lockwood actually passed you, in her walker" Mason teased.

"How did I manage to run better then both of you?" Lily asked, "You both suck at running".

"Hey!" Mason said.

Lily put her hands up in surrender, "I only speak the truth" she defended.

"Yeah alright Miss. Truth, shoes off, mud, my mom", Tyler waved his hand under his neck.

"Cool, yeah, yeah" Mason said, as both him and Lily proceeded to take their shoes off, "So all this anger and aggression you were talking about, you notice the difference when you exercise?".

Tyler scoffed, "Dude, I played there varsity sport" he said, "I work out four times a week and run three, I'm gonna say no".

"Do you have episodes?" Mason asked curiously, "I mean, what happens exactly?".

"Starts out normal, I mean, I get angry, typically over nothing" Tyler explained, "I'm an angry guy, you know, it just amplifies and then I go off".

"You black out?" Mason asked.

"Yeah, it's like I go blind with rage" Tyler replied, making Lily give him a sympathetic look, knowing the feeling of rage taking over pretty well,

"Is there a pattern?" Mason asked, "Like, once a month? Only at night?".

"All I know is I lose myself, you know?" Tyler replied, "For that time, I become something else, and I hate it".

After Tyler went upstairs to shower, Lily turned to Mason, "He isn't like us Mason" she said.

"If he doesn't get control over his anger, then it's not long before he becomes exactly like us" Mason said.

Lily shook her head, "We won't let that happen" she said, "The only reason you and I are what we are is because we were alone, but Tyler has us, we will help get his rage in check".

Mason nodded in agreement, while inside the office, Damon was even more confused hearing Lily and Mason's talks, but his suspicion of Mason and Lily being a threat, was slowly but surely being confirmed.

"No Tyler" Lily said, walking down the Lockwood's stairs.

"Yes Lily" Tyler said.

"No".

"Yes".

"Nope".

"Yeap".

"Tyler".

"Lily".

"I don't want to go to a stupid high school carnival" Lily complained.

"You're going to be starting school again, you need to get familiar with it again" Tyler said.

"A carnival isn't going to help me do that" Lily argued.

"You don't know that" Tyler argued back.

"One day you're going to get murdered by me" Lily said, glaring at the her best friend.

"No I'm not" Tyler said, giving Lily a teasing smile.

Lily groaned in annoyance, "If I go will you promise to let me sleep in tomorrow and not drag me to go running with you?".

"You have yourself a deal" Tyler promised.

Lily sighed, "Fine, let's go to this stupid carnival".

"Finally" Tyler said, grabbing Lily's hand, "Let's go".

Before the two best friends could walk out the front door, noise coming from the office caught their attention, Lily and Tyler exchanged a confused look, wanting to know who was in there, they walked towards the office, entering it they were confused seeing Mason searching the drawers for something.

"What are you doing?" A confused Tyler asked, letting his and Lily's presence known.

"Huh?" a startled Mason asked, "Nothing, just killing time, waiting for you two".

"It seemed that you were looking for something" Lily said, ever since Mason has come back to Mystic Falls, something has been off about him to Lily, for some reason he wasn't the same person who helped her embrace her true self.

"Yeah, actually" Mason said, he looked at Tyler, "You know where I could find any family artifact stuff? The heirlooms?".

Tyler chuckled, "Blow through your trust fund already?" he asked.

Mason laughed, "I did that when I was twenty two" he replied, "No, I'm just looking for this old piece of my mom's, my dad gave it to her when they got married, it's sentimental value, probably passed down to your dad, should be in the house here somewhere".

"What's it look like?" Tyler asked curiously.

"It's a moonstone" Mason replied, "It's about the size of a hockey puck, old, ugly, minimal monetary value".

"Hey, man, whatever" An amused Tyler said, "Um, ask my mom, I guess".

"Yeah, cool, I'll do that" Mason said, "You two ready?".

"Yeah" Tyler replied.

"Unfortunately" Lily mumbled, walking out of the office with Tyler and Mason.

"So you brought me to this stupid carnival so I can watch you do hand wrestling?" Lily asked, as Tyler sat infront of his opponent.

"You could always go do other things" Tyler replied.

"No thank you" Lily said, "Just the thought of talking to other people makes me want to rip my own tongue out".

Tyler chuckled, "Well then unfortunately you are here to watch me beat asses" he said.

"Fine, then you better win" Lily said, "I can't be best friends with a looser".

"Of course" Tyler said, chuckling and proceeding to make his opponent lose.

While watching Tyler, Lily didn't miss the way Damon Salvatore was looking at her and Tyler.

"You're lurking" Lily heard Stefan say to Damon, with the help of her super hearing.

"I'm observing" Damon defended.

"More like obsessing" Stefan retorted.

"He's got strength" Damon observed as Tyler managed to beat his opponent.

"He a triple-letter varsity athlete, of course he has strength" Stefan said, "You're reaching".

"Come on Lils, your turn" Tyler said, taking Lily's attention off of the Salvatore brothers.

"Beating guys up in their favorite sport?" Lily asked, "Bring it on".

"That's my girl" Tyler said, standing up and letting Lily take his seat.

"Come on Tyler, you know I'm going to crush your best friend" the guy infront of Lily said.

"I wouldn't be so sure of that" Tyler said.

"Hey dickhead!" Lily said, "Why don't you save this shit talk for after I beat your sorry ass?".

Everyone around Lily started hooting and laughing hearing her, while the guy glared at Lily, "Bring it on" he said.

Lily smirked, the guy and her then held hands and prepared themself for the arm wrestling, after the bell rang, indicating them to start, Lily very easily won the match.

"You were saying?" Lily asked, a taunting smirk on her face.

"That's my best friend!" Tyler yelled, making Lily laugh.

Damon turned to Stefan, "That guy was twice her size" he pointed out, "Tyler's got strength because he plays varsity sports, explain where she gets her strength from".

"I bet I can take you" Mason said, entering the scene and talking to Tyler.

"Enter the uncle" Damon commented.

"Bring it on, surfer boy" Tyler said, as Lily stood up and Tyler took her seat.

"This is ridiculous" Stefan said, as the bell rang and Tyler and Mason started arm wrestling, in which after a tense battle, Mason beat Tyler.

"Damn!" Tyler commented.

"Is that it?" Mason laughed.

"All right, he's the champ" Tyler told everyone, "Who wants to go next?".

"Hey, Stefan wants a go!" Damon announced, catching his brother off guard.

Stefan cleared his throat, "Yeah, sure" he said, "I'll give it a shot, you know".

"Go Stef!" Damon cheered.

"I need a new best friend" Lily told Tyler, as he stood up and let Stefan take his place.

"He's stronger then me" Tyler defended.

"Excuses, excuses" Lily teased, making Tyler shake his head at her.

"My brother over there thinks I can beat you" Stefan told Mason.

Mason chuckled, "Your brother's wrong".

The bell rang and both Mason and Stefan arm wrestled, only for Mason to ultimately come out as the winner.

"You didn't put in any effort at all" Damon accused his brother, once he walked back to him.

"Yeah, actually I did" Stefan defended, shocking Damon.

"Is he--?".

"No, no, no, it wasn't that kind of strength" Stefan interrupted, "But it was more than human, if that makes any sense".

Damon looked in the direction of Lily and Mason, "There is something seriously wrong with those two" he said, "And I need to know what".

After spending a little bit more time with Tyler and Mason, Lily needed to use the restroom so she went inside the school, while walking towards the restroom, Stefan's voice caught her attention.

"How did this happen, hmm?" Lily heard Stefan ask.

Lily peaked into the classroom she was walking by and saw Elena, Damon and Stefan standing there, looking worried about about something, being the curious person she was, Lily decided to eavesdrop on their conversation, wanting to know what were they so worried about.

"Well, I fed her blood and Katherine obviously killed her" Damon replied, making Lily wonder who did he feed blood to and who the hell is Katherine, whose mind briefly went to her sister, but quickly shook her head, her sister was fine, her mother had texted her saying she was discharged from the hospital and was now somewhere at this carnival, "And A plus B equals".

"But why?" Elena asked confused.

"Because Katherine is a manipulative, nasty little slut" Damon replied.

"And she said, game on?" Stefan asked, "I mean, what does that even mean?".

"It means she's playing dirty, she wants us to know" Damon replied.

"But why Caroline?" Elena asked, making Lily's eyes go wide in shock.

"I don't know" Damon replied.

"Caroline must be completely out of her mind" a worried Stefan said, "She has no idea what's happening to her".

"Oh, I think she does" Damon said, "All of my compulsion from the past started wearing off the minute she was in transition".

"We have to find her" Stefan stated.

"Yep, and kill her" Damon said, making Lily clench her fists in anger, she was very close to barging into the classroom and attacking the oldest Salvatore.

"You're not gonna kill Caroline" Elena snapped.

"She knows who we are" Damon reminded, "She's officially a liability, we gotta get rid of her".

"Damon, absolutely not" Stefan disagreed, shaking his head.

"Need I remind you of a tragic little story of a girl name Vicki Donovan?" Damon asked, making Lily frown, wondering what did the Salvatores have to do with her dead best friend, "Yeah, Caroline of all people will not make it as a vampire, her mother is a vampire hunter and god knows what her sister is, guys come on, we all know how this story ends, let's just flip to the last chapter and--".

"It's not an option, Damon" Elena interrupted.

"No?" Damon asked, he looked at his brother, "Your silence is deafening Stefan, wait, wasn't there a school carnival the night you staked Vicki?", Damon scoffed, "Talk about a town where history repeats itself, you know I'm right".

Outside, Lily's eyes had started to glow yellow, she was furious after hearing everything, Stefan Salvatore had killed her best friend and now his brother planned to do the same to her sister, without wasting another minute, Lily quickly rushed down the corridor, hoping to find her sister before any of the Salvatore's did, and she swears, if any of the brothers hurt her sister, their heads will roll.

Before Lily could find her sister, Damon had managed to find a hysterical Caroline, next to a dead body she had managed to kill after losing control over her bloodlust.

"He's dead" Caroline said, as Damon walked over to her, "I killed him" Caroline took a deep breath, and suddenly started sobbing, "What's wrong with me?".

"Hey, hey, it's okay" Damon assured, rubbing Caroline's back, "I can help you".

"You can?" Caroline asked, slightly hopeful.

"Yeah, I have to" Damon replied.

Caroline looked at the wooden stake in Damon's hand in suspicion, "What are you going to do?" she asked.

"The only thing I can do" Damon replied, removing Caroline's hair from her face, "I'm gonna kill you".

"Please don't, I don't want to die" Caroline cried, stepping away from Damon.

"Yeah, but you're already dead" Damon reminded.

"No, I'm not!" Caroline sobbed, shaking her head in denial, "Don't say that, okay? Just help me".

"Okay" Damon finally said.

"Okay?" Caroline said, "Just help me, please, please, please".

"Okay, okay, okay" Damon said, hugging Caroline, "It's gonna be okay, gonna be okay, it's the only way".

Damon lifted his hand up to stake Caroline, when suddenly someone grabbed his hand, the stake was ripped away from his hand and Caroline was shoved away from him, and before he could realise anything, someone had wrapped their hand around his throat and shoved him to the ground.

"Don't you dare touch my sister!" Lily yelled, glaring at the oldest Salvatore.

Damon looked at the Forbes girl in shock, because right now her eyes were glowing yellow, "What the hell are you?" he breathed out, having trouble breathing with Lily's hand over his throat.

Lily tightened her hold on Damon's throat making him groan in pain, "Trust me, you don't want to know" she said.

"Lily" Caroline cried.

Hearing her sister, Lily's eyes finally went back to normal, she turned around and faced her sister, "Are you okay?" she asked, letting go of Damon and standing up and facing her sister.

"I don't know what's happening to me" Caroline cried.

"Hey, it's okay" Lily said, walking over to her sister, "You're going to be okay".

While Lily's attention was on her sister, she didn't see Damon stand up again, he grabbed the wooden stake that Lily staked and once again rushed to attack, but this time it was Lily, however before he could stake Lily, Stefan speeded over to him and shoved him away.

"Stefan!" Damon yelled in annoyance.

"Get away from me!" Caroline yelled, seeing Elena, "You killed me!" Caroline looked at her sister, "Lily!".

"I'm here" Lily assured, grabbing her sister, "I'm right here Care, I won't let anyone hurt you".

"Caroline, that wasn't me" Elena said, "You know that was Katherine".

"No!" Caroline yelled, "Then why does she look like you? And why? Why did she do this to me?".

"Care, we will figure all of this out later, right now we need to go before someone sees you" Lily said, "Come on, let's go".

"Lily, let Stefan help her" Elena said.

"Yeah, like he helped Vicki right?!" Lily snapped, glaring at Elena, "He killed Vicki but I won't let any of you near my sister".

Elena looked at Lily in shock, "How do you know that?".

"See?!" Damon pointed out to a equally confused Stefan, "Those two need to die, Caroline's going to get us exposed and her sister knows too much and is god knows what".

"Come near me and my sister and then you will know what I am" Lily snapped glaring at Damon, "Now come on Care, let's leave".

Lily grabbed Caroline's hand and they turned to leave but their way was blocked by a shocked Bonnie.

"Caroline?" Bonnie whispered, shocked seeing the blood on Caroline's face.

"Don't you start as well Bonnie" Lily warned.

"No" Bonnie said, shaking her head, "You're not, you can't, you can't be", Bonnie rushed over to Caroline and grabbed her arm, immediately realising she was a vampire.

"Bonnie" Caroline cried.

Bonnie shook her head, her eyes then landed on the guy Caroline had kill, "Oh, god!" she cried, rushing over to the body.

"Bonnie!" Caroline called out, but Bonnie ignored her.

"Come on Care, we can deal with her later" Lily said, taking Caroline away from the scene.

Caroline and Lily rushed into the bathroom, Caroline still sobbing.

Lily quickly grabbed some tissues and after wetting them, started cleaning Caroline's face.

"She hates me" Caroline cried, "Bonnie hates me".

Lily sighed, "Caroline you need to calm down, everybody is in shock right now, okay?" she said, "Everything's going to be fine".

"And what about Matt?" Caroline sobbed, "What am I supposed to do about Matt?".

"Right now you should be worrying about yourself" Lily said, "If Matt cares about, he will understand that you are going through something, and he will wait for you to figure things out".

"I'm a murderer, I'm a monster" Caroline said, using tissues to wipe the blood off of her hands.

"You're not a murderer Caroline" Lily assured, "You're changing and you lost control, but one day you will be fine".

A hysterical Caroline looked at her reflection in the mirror and saw veins appear under her eyes, 
"God!" she yelled, slamming her hands on the sink, she turned around and hid her face in her hands, "Why does this keep happening to my face? I'm hideous".

"Stop saying that" Lily snapped, removing Caroline's hands from her face, "Look at me Care, look at my eyes".

After a moment, Caroline finally opened her and looked at her sister's eyes, that were now glowing yellow, "What are you?" she asked shocked.

"You're a vampire and I am a werewolf" Lily informed.

"How?" Caroline asked shocked, "Did you die as well?".

Lily shook her head, "It's a long story, that I promise to tell, right after we leave this horrid place".

Realisation suddenly crossed Caroline's face, "Oh my god, is this why you left?".

Lily nodded, "Yeah it was" she replied, "Look I'll tell you how I triggered my curse once we get home, but right now, you need to know that you and I are not monsters, we are not murderers, for a very long time I blamed myself for someone's death, but I realised that I didn't kill anyone, it was an accident, yes I could have avoided that accident if I just used my brain, but I didn't but at the same time I didn't kill her, it took me a long time to realise that but eventually I did, now you need to realise the same thing, you are new at this, yeah you killed someone but not because you are a monster, but because you lost control because you're new, you are Caroline freaking Forbes, and maybe not right now, but eventually you're going to gain control and then you will realise that you are not a monster, we are not monsters, understood?".

"I'm not a monster?" Caroline asked, tears falling down her eyes.

Lily shook her head, "No Care Bear, you are not a monster" she replied.

Caroline cried and hugged her sister tightly, glad that she wasn't alone, she had her sister right by her side.

"You were in an accident?" Caroline asked shocked, as both her and Lily sat on Caroline's bed, talking about how Lily triggered her werewolf curse.

Lily nodded, "It was stupid, I was high, so was Faith, and I looked down at my phone for one second and the next second I looked up only to see a car speeding right at us, I tried to dodge the car but our car ended up crashing into a tree, when I woke up after being unconscious for god knows how long, when I looked to my side, Faith was unconscious, I mean that's what I initially thought, when I actually checked, Faith was dead, the accident ended up snapping her neck and she died on the spot".

"Oh my god" Caroline whispered.

"I didn't know what to do" Lily cried, tears falling down her eyes, "I crawled out of the car and immediately the worst pain shot through me and my eyes they started glowing yellow, I didn't know what I was then, when mom found me, I was on the side of the road sobbing, once mom realised what happened, what I was becoming she told me to leave town, she knew that if I stayed the people in this town won't let me live, so she told me to leave and not return until I learnt control and figured out what I was".

"All this time I hated you so much for leaving" Caroline cried, "I didn't stop to think that maybe you had a reason as to why you left, all I cared about was that you ran away, you left me, god why didn't I just stop and for once just think that maybe there was a bigger reason as to why you left".

"Because I left without a trace Caroline" Lily said, "I didn't even say goodbye, I gave you all the reasons to hate me".

Caroline shook her head, "I'm such an awful sister".

"No you're not" Lily assured, "That's just the way we are, we fight, we yell at each, but that doesn't change the fact that you are my sister and I love you".

"I love you too" Caroline said, hugging her sister.

Lily hugged her sister back, "God, can you believe it, one of us is a vampire and the other is a werewolf".

Caroline broke the hug and looked at her sister, "Oh my god, are we supposed to hate each other now?".

Lily chuckled, "Yeah, I think so" she replied.

"But I can't hate you, yeah at times you annoy me but that doesn't mean I hate you" Caroline said.

"You annoy me as well" Lily said.

"But you're way more annoying" Caroline retorted.

"Am not" Lily said.

"Are too" Caroline said.

"No".

"Yes".

"You're being annoying right now".

"I'm not being annoying, you are".

And that's the scene that Sherriff Liz Forbes was greeted with when she entered the house, with both her daughters running over to her and asking who out of them was the more annoying daughter.
