Chapter 3
I knocked and then entered the classroom.
"Miss Sommers, so nice to see you," said Mr Anthony, the biology teacher.
"I'm sorry I'm late. May I go to my seat?"
"How could I say no to that?" he said with that annoying grin of his I was so used to.
As I started walking towards my desk, he added, "Miss Sommers, unless I have Alzheimer, I am pretty sure I did not say yes eighter." The students were giggling. I stopped midway through the room and turned around, biting the inside of my cheek. In those conditions, it was better to remain silent.
"After you sit down, grab a piece of paper and write down the lesson you had prepared for today." Now the class was quiet. Except for one majestic idiot who fancied congratulating me on my achievement. "You do that too, Mr Grange. And make sure you don't forget about the drawings. You both have fifteen minutes."
I had never been more grateful for having studied. Good thing I had been away the weekend before and I'd taken my biology books instead of what I was currently reading. I was well known among my friends for being a bookworm. I frequently traded homework for a little something to read. So if that was not sheer luck, I had no idea what it was.
I wrote three pages and a half. 10 minutes and my arm was aching. Having finished but not wanting to hand in my paper yet, I put down the pen and let my eyes wander.
It was in that moment that I realized how awfully weird the human body was. How could something as powerful as the soul be encaged? Colours and figures were blurring my vision. A sense of deja vu took hold of me. I was drawn into that memory although I didn't know what it was. I knew it belonged to me , I was addicted to the feeling of it. It was like everything made sense. I wanted to go deeper, I wanted to let its mystery unravel in front of me. It was so much better when I didn't need any sort of body.
"Miss Sommers, I do not believe it is sleeping time," said Mr Anthony. "Now please, give me your paper. You too, Mr Grange."
I spent the rest of the period thinking about that crazy flashback. It felt too real to have been inspired by a book I had read, so it really bothered me that I couldn't find an explanation for it. Most of the books I read were encyclopedias, history or normal fiction books, where nothing magical really happened. They were called normal so as to show respect to the not so mentally developed humans who had written them. What could be felt by the soul was split in two: emotions and energy. Normal humans usually only felt emotions such as joy, grief, madness and everything in between. When meditating they could reach the energy which controlled and connected each and every emotion from above. Everything that was. Genuine contempt. However few of them had the courage to keep working on it and feel at ease with themselves and their surroundings even when they were not specifically trying to. The talent of being happy needed, like any other talent, decision to start and nourishing. Not many of them we're willing to assume that responsibility. But those who did eventually had a way of finding others like themselves and forming communities based on mutual ideals. Moonshore was one of these communities and we knew of at least four other gatherings like such, amongst which Moonshore was actually the least developed. The cause? Controllers.
As soon as the bell rang, I rushed out of the classroom and bumped straight into Maya. Seeing her puffy eyes and ruined mascara, it was clear I was not the only one with a hell of a story to tell.
"Your bra is showing," I told her, ushering her towards the bathroom.
"So what? More then 80% of us girls wear bras, what's the big deal if you can see a strap?" she answered, mumbling to herself more then talking to me. "I mean, don't you really have anything else to worry about?"
Once we were inside, I locked the door and then sat on the countertop. "Okay. Spit it out."
"It's nothing, really."
"Is it Ash?"
A few tears threatened to come down at the sound of his name, but she fought against it. It was all I needed.
"M, if that bastard did something to you, I swear to god I'm.." "No, you have to let me deal with it, okay?"
"Well I can't just sit here doing nothing, when it's clear you're suffering," I argued.
"Your job is to watch Netflix with me," she said, "and buy me tissues and ice-cream. The rest is my job. I know you mean well, but I can take care of myself, sis."
"I know, I know," I said with a smile. "Come on, let's fix your face." At that, she started laughing.
"So what did you want to talk to me about?" she asked me on our way to class.
"Oh it's nothing. Trust me, totally irrelevant."
"Nothing is irrelevant when it comes to you, darling," added Maya.
"Second," interrupted our dear old friend.
"Hello to you too, Weasley," I said with a grin. His name was actually not Weasley, obviously. But no name or nickname could have suited him better; it was all due to his red hair and lovely appetite. "Now seriously," he continued, "you'd better say what it is all about before there is no way we can undo it."
I shot him a glare.
"Hey, I have my reasons not to trust you, remember?"
"What is he talking about, Lil?"
"I have absolutely no idea," I said, while giving him the I will kill you look.
"Oh okay, you guys can keep your secrets, I have a class to go to. See you later, losers," she said and hurried through the mob of students. He watched her go away with so much longing in his eyes you would have said it was the last time he'd see her. Poor thing. He still had feellings for her and she had no idea.
"Well, I guess it's just us now," he said, turning to me.
Using the most adorable voice I could master, I said, "Weasley..I need your help on something."
"So there is something going on." With a sigh, he said, "Okay, shoot."
"What do you know about...uhmmm.....well..dreams?"
"Shhh you know better than talking about that," he said while pulling me aside. "There is no such thing as dreams. I don't know what that old guy told you when you were a kid but they are nothing more than a myth. And stop bringing them up in public. You know what happened to that couple, right? Because they did the same stupid thing?"
"As a matter of fact, no, I don't."
"Exactly."
"Uh, you're no use," I said while rolling my eyes. "I know there's something more to it, something the Controllers don't want us to know."
I turned around to leave. "And I'm going to find what it is."
