Chapter 6 Good Enough
(Edmunds POV)
I dashed down the marble steps from the front entrance to the castle, brushing by the guards and a few of our maids as I did so. The air had gotten much colder over night, or either I hadn't noticed it yesterday, nipping at my skin as I ran towards the woods. The trees parted easily, revealing a small path that I, myself, had created our first time here when I needed to escape. Despite the fact that I was indeed a King, I was also a child with quite a bit of responsibility.
I ran, not bothering to watch where I was going as I had this path memorized, slowing my pace as I approached a break in the trees that opened up to a cliff overlooking the beach that we'd ended up on with Maggie. In front of me sat Emmy with her knees pulled up to her chest and her face hidden by her hair. I could here her soft yet choppy breathing as I approached her and sat beside her gently, being I bit louder than normal so I wouldn't scare her.
"I have a twin." She breathed, the crack in her voice enough to make me cry. "I have a twin who resurrected my evil aunt and freed my mother who is now going to take over Narnia. Why do I feel like this all my fault?"
"No." I responded immediately. "These things that have happened occurred before you came back. You had no control over them, no one did."
"Thats not what I mean." She lifted her head and stared in my eyes with blood shot ones of her own. Her cheeks where bright red, as was her chest, and her hair was wild from the breeze coming from the waters below us. "I should have done something when I was younger to prevent this, something different. I should have been better. She had me-she had me and she still wanted more. Why? Why wasnt I good enough?"
A tear dripped down her cheek and I couldn't stop myself from reaching up and brushing it away with my thumb. "You are good enough."
"Clearly thats not true. If it were then we wouldn't be in this mess." Her hair fell back in her face as she looked down to where she was picking at the grass.
I smiled sadly, pulling her hair over her shoulder so I could see her face, causing her to meet my eyes once more. "You're good enough for me."
She sat up straight, suddenly angling her body to face mine. We began leaning forward simultaneously as she placed her hand on my arm and mine found its way to the side of her neck. Our noses brushed against each others and a tingle ran all the way through my body from my toes to my finger tips like a jolt of lightening. Our breath mingled together as we leaned even closer, not yet touching lips. Just as my lips began to close around her bottom one some one called her name out, causing us to break apart quickly and rise to out feet in one swift movement.
"Emmy?" Lucy called, louder this time, from a few feet away.
I gripped her arm as she started to go forward, placing a finger to my lips. "No one knows about this place. It's sort of my secret get away."
"But you let me see it." She deadpanned, following me around a bush and out into the open.
"Not by choice."
I smirked as she rolled her eyes and called out to Lucy, accepting my sisters rough hug. "I'm so sorry we made you upset! We didn't mean to. None of this is your fault, we were just shocked that you didn't tell us. I just wish you trusted me enough to tell me."
"Funny." I started, leaning cockily against a near by tree and crossing my arms. "I knew."
Lucy's mouth fell open as she stared at an annoyed Emmy. "You- you told him?"
"Only last night." Emmy held up her hands. "I do trust you Lu, I just heard what happened the first time you were here and thought you'd be upset or something."
Lucy smiled at the realization of her mistake and hugged Emmy once more, rubbing her back lightly. "How are you doing?"
I frowned as the smile literally slid off of Emmy's face and was once again replaced by the look of sorrow. "Fine." She mumbled so softly that I had to strain my ears to hear it. "Can we go back now. I'm cold."
"Of course." Lucy smiled lightly, holding out her arm for Emmy to lead the way, but quickly dropping it when Emmy declined the offer, telling Lucy she'd catch up.
Once she was out of sight, Emmy made her way over to me, placing her hand against my left cheek and firmly planting her lips on the other. "Thank you." She said a loud once she'd pulled back.
I let my hands fall from her arms and struggled silently for a few seconds to find coherent words. "W-what for?"
She shrugged, her shoulder rising and falling gracefully, the ghost of smile toying with the corner of her mouth. She contemplated an answer for a few moments before ruffling my hair and linking her arm in mine. "For being you."
