Chapter 27 Corn Field
(Maggies POV)
"We cant find them." Susan called as she and Lucy made there way towards Peter and I, the tone of her voice causing us both to rise to our feet in slight alarm. "We checked all over the woods in the direction they went but nothing."
"Maybe they just got lost or something." Lucy offered, shrugging her shoulder and looking to her brother with pleading eyes, as though she was silently hoping he would magically know where they were and could make her feel better.
"Thats impossible." Susan exclaimed. "We saw the berry bush ourselves Lu, it wasnt that deep into the woods. The whole point of them going was to find food, so it doesnt make sense that they would overlook the berries and go deeper into the forest."
"Well?" Peter called suddenly in the opposite direction causing us all to turn and follow his gaze.
"Nothing." Trumpkin called back, dropping another arm load of fire wood down beside the piles he and Caspian brought back a while ago.
"The suns going down." Caspian pointed out.
"We dont want to be searching the woods blindly in the dark waiting for that witch and her pets to make a special appearance." Trumpkin exclaimed.
"Well we dont want our brother and Emmy out there either!" Lucy cried.
"Edmunds the best swordsman in Narnia, I think him and his little girlfriend will do alright for one night." Trumpkin plopped down onto the nearest log and let out a sigh.
"Girlfriend?" Susan frowned, earning a nudge from Peter who ignored her questioning stare.
"Are you mad?" Peter stepped forward, towering over the dwarf. "You want us to leave our brother out there with Aslan knows what because he's good with a sword?"
"The boys been to war before with some of toughest things i've ever seen! You cant baby him for the rest of his life. Give the boy some independence."
"That'd be just fine if he wasn't exactly as you said, a boy." Susan crossed her arms.
"You've fought by his side in those wars, havent you?" I asked, making eye contact with Peter momentarily while waiting for Trumpkins reply. He only nodded once. "Then having faced the 'toughest things you've ever seen' should make walking in the dark no problem."
I couldnt help but smile a bit as my husband grinned at me, taking my hand in his and preparing to start forward, when a rustling caused us all to freeze.
"I mean you no harm." A brunette girl called, walking slowly towards us with hands raised. She was dressed in a white and red checkered dress that reached her knees and hung loosely on her frame. "My name is Dorothy, I met your brother and his friend a ways back, they asked me to come find you."
"Why didnt they come themselves?" Peter asked, lowering his sword hesitantly.
"Well they would have, but they were so tired from walking so far in search of water for you all that I offered to find you for them." She smiled lightly at us, making eye contact with each of us shortly.
"We sent them in search of food." Susan replied slowly.
The girl didnt seem fazed by her comment. "I left them with plenty to eat and drink not to far from here. Really," She added after a moment of silence. "They're just this way. You can follow me if you like."
"Alright." Peter nodded a few seconds later, still not sheathing his sword, only lowering it by his side. "Lead the way then."
A grin spread out across the girls face as she nodded and turned slowly, leading us into the corn field.
