Chapter 13 Red
(Emmys POV)
"It's about time!" Trumpkin exclaimed as Edmund and I made our way towards the group, quickly distancing ourselves.
"Sorry." I mumbled, passing the large leaf full of berries to Lucy who accepted them and began offering them to Caspian.
We ate in silence, watching as the flames lapped at each other and twisted together, mimicking the movements of the smoke and fog. Completely exhausted, we were all sleep within no time.

Off in the distance, I vaguely heard a snapping noise, waking me from my slumber. I sat up quickly, rubbing my eyes in attempt to blink away the blurriness.
The fire in front of me was dying slowly, but surely. I could tell from the little sliver of rising sun that it was early in the morning. To my right Lucy and Reepeecheep laid together peacefully while Trumpkin and Caspian slept a little ways from each other just above them, and to my left Edmund laid with his head propped against the shoulder bag Lucy brought with her.
Another twig snapping rang out, causing me to snap my head around, finally spotting the source of the noise. A flash of red shot back into the trees, and before I knew it I was on my feet chasing after it.
The branches scrapped at my arms and legs as I pushed my way through the thick brush, catching tiny glimpses of red every once and a while. A sharp growl from behind me caused me to freeze in place, taking a deep breath slowly and turning around.
A dark gray wolf stood a few feet behind me, eyeing my dangerously, snarling with large bared teeth. It let out another growl, taking a step towards me. I stumbled backwards a few paces before snagging my foot on a fallen branch and falling hard onto my back, crawling backwards as it approached me more quickly.
Just as it swiped its foot against the ground, preparing to charge at me, an arrow shot from out of the trees, piercing the beast in its side. I watched as it crashed to the ground, letting out a whimper, kicking a few times as though attempting to run before stopping all together.
I pushed myself off of the ground and onto shaking legs, looking around and expecting to see Edmund or Caspian or even Trumpkin, but to my surprise all I saw was a girl.
She stood in front of me in between two trees, adjusting the bow and quiver on her shoulder before glancing up at me and brushing the hood of the red cloak off of her head, revealing long, dark curls and piercing green eyes.
Her sharp cheekbones and pointed features made her appear to be more mature than her voice made her sound. "Your welcome."
"Th-thank you!" I stuttered, brushing some dirt off of my clothes and giving her a small smile.
"What are you doing out here?" She asked, approaching me cautiously.
"Oh, we, my crew and I, we're looking for someone. The person lives just over those trees." I pointed behind me, back towards our camp. "We saw smoke last night and were trying to get there, but the journey proved longer than expected so we stopped to rest for the night."
"You and your crew," She asked, standing toe to toe with me. "What do you want with this person?"
"Aslan wants them. He needs their help and he thinks that we might be able to convince them to help with an upcoming... Event."
"Aslan?" She muttered to herself, raising her eyes to meet mine in surprise. "You're with Aslan?"
"You know him?" I exclaimed in surprise.
"Of course. I'm the one he sent you to find." She shrugged one slim shoulder and placed her hands on her hips. "They call me red."
"I'm Emmy. What's your gift?"
"Don't have one." She scoffed, brushing her shoulder against mine as she walked in the direction of the camp. "I'm a hunter, that's it. Nothing more to it."
I hurried after her, tripping periodically as I tried to keep up with her long strides. "Well, you must be amazing then."
"So everyone says, the best in all the lands. People hire me to hunt a variety of things. I bring them back, dead or alive, whichever they request, and I get paid. I'm not in it for the fame, just for the payment."
"What made you-"
"Take up killing things?" She glanced back at me, cutting me off. "A wolf, one of the largest and most vicious in the land, killed my grandmother. I tracked it down for months before finally cornering it in a cave just outside of a neighboring village. I did what I needed to do. It's not that I enjoy killing, I just enjoy eliminating threats."
"That's why you're perfect!" She stopped once we reached the clearing, facing me with a look of exasperation on her face. "Your skilled and determined, plus you share a common interest with all of us. All we want is to ensure the safety of our world. You can understand that, can't you? Please, just give it a little longer. Once there, if you decide you still can't help then you can leave."
"Just like that?" She raised her eyebrows.
"Just like that. Please, we need you." I begged, glancing back just in time to see everyone else beginning to stir.
"Have you 'convinced' anyone else?"
I nodded swiftly. "Ione, the shapeshifter."
She looked surprised as she let her head roll back, sighing before straightening up and meeting my eyes with hers. "Alright. I'll do it."
