Part 5

Leo is quiet. Her breathing starts to get shallow, making it harder for her to hide from Leo. The walls in bunker nine start to close in on Claire, giving her the feeling that she is trapped, a feeling she knows all too well.

"Hey, Claire? Are you okay?" Leo asks her. Claire nods. "Are you sure? Because you're doing this thing where you kind of, like, are folding into yourself and your breathing is getting really heavy."

Claire starts to nod again, then shakes her head. Leo notices, then says, "Is it getting claustrophobic in here for you?" She hesitates, then nods. "Do you want to go outside?"

"Y-yes," Claire finally stammers out. Claire walks towards the door but before she can even walk two steps, Leo grabs her wrist. Immediately she got a flashback from years ago.

She had just accidentally snapped back to her father, and he had grabbed her wrist and bent back her arm. So hard, Claire was sobbing and shaking from the pain, screaming at him to stop. Eventually, he did stop but not until he had bent her arm so far back she almost blacked out from the pain. When he was finished, he gave her a smack across the face.

"Stop, please... just stop," Claire mumbled weakly. This earned her another smack across the face.

"Do not talk back. You never talk back. Especially to adults." Her father added. "And never say no. If you say no to a kid then they will think you're weird. And if you say no to an adult then they will punish you very severely." Her father finished and left.

"Claire? Claire!" Leo sounded relieved. Claire froze at the feeling of his hand on her wrist. She yanked her wrist out of his hand and ran out of the bunker.

Leo watched, unmoving, as Claire ran out of bunker nine. "Claire!" He yelled, running after her. "Claire, wait!"

She kept running, not looking back, despite Leo's shouts to stop. Claire ran into the forest that surrounded bunker nine, towards the cabins. She ran to the lavafied climbing wall and went behind it. Claire leaned against the wall for protection then she sank down to the ground, breathing heavily, trying to stop the flashbacks she was getting.

TRIGGER WARNING: BLOOD YOU MAY SKIP THIS PART IF YOU WISH THAT IS ALL

"You, girl, your mother is coming over today." Claire sighed. She already knew what her father was going to say next. "She says she has a 'special surprise' for you today." Just as her father finished speaking, the doorbell rang, signaling that Claire's mother was here. Claire wandered out into the front hallway of their condo.

"Hello, mother," Claire spoke politely, despite having been told multiple times to never speak out of turn, or unless spoken to first. Saying this resulted in her mother smacking her upside the head.

"Well? Aren't you going to offer to take my coat?" She demanded. Claire rushed to go and retrieve her mother's coat from her, tripping over her own feet, nearly faceplanting.

"My god, ungrateful bastard. Has your father's discipline taught you nothing?" Claire's mother chides. "Sigh. Nevertheless, come into the living room for your 'special surprise'." She gestured with her hands.

Claire's mother went in first. Claire hesitated, scared of what her mother could do to her. "Hurry up, slow ass." Her father smacked her face. "I said, hurry up. My god, kids these days."

Claire looked back once and without a second thought rushed into the living room. "Sit down and we can get started." Reluctantly, Claire sat down on the small couch in the room.

Once everyone had gotten settled, Claire's mother pulled out a small knife. "What? What are you going to do with that?" Claire asked, weakly, knowing how her mother was going to answer. Her mother grabbed her wrists, took the knife, and made a small yet deep cut on the lower part of her arm.

Claire sucked in a breath of air between her teeth, wincing from the sting of the cut. Her mother did this several more times, on both arms, until Claire's arms were dripping with blood. Her vision spun. She gripped the arm of the couch to steady herself.

"Silly girl." Her mother chided. Claire, losing consciousness slowly due to blood loss, collapsed to the ground, barely conscious. She looked up at her mother weakly.

"Why?" She paused. "Why did you do this to me?" Claire's mother's face dropped into a frown, as if she couldn't believe that her daughter was asking her a question.

"Because you deserve it." Her mother finally said. "Because you're an ungrateful girl." And then, just as the eyes of her vision went black, Claire's father added, "And because no one will ever love you."

And with those words, Claire slipped into unconsciousness.

OKAY NO MORE TRIGGERS AFTER THIS (in this chapter anyways)

"Claire?" Someone called her name. Before she even had a chance to react Leo appeared in front of her. Claire, thinking Leo was going to harm her, shielded her body away from him. "It's okay, Claire. I'm not going to hurt you."
