Chapter 60: Smoke and Shadow (Part 3)

    "I know that's you, Azula! Tell your friends to let Kiyi go!" Zuko shouted.  Azula lightningbended at him. "Did you forget I can redirect--"
   He lost control as her lightning proved to be too much for him and he crashed into the wall. Rose felt a pain in her chest as she rushed to his side, screaming his name.
   "It's ok, love. I'm ok. It's just...she's gotten stronger again."
   Suki began fighting Azula but Azula was faster and disappeared into the night. At that moment, Ursa, Noren, and Ophelia came running up. "They took my baby!" Ursa said, knowing the answer before it was given.
   "Yes. I'm so sorry."
   Ursa broke down and cried.

   The next morning, Zuko and Rose sat on their thrones, listening to the morning report. "Four more were kidnapped last night. Including Kiyi, that makes a total of thirteen. The people are becoming so scared, they're talking about leaving the city."
   "I don't blame them." Zuko answered miserably.
   Rose grabbed his arm. "We'll find her, my love. I promise."
   Zuko turned to her quickly and wrapped his wife in his arms, shaking. "I'm so worried about her."
   "That's why we're here to help."
   Zuko turned to see Aurora, Aang, the Kyoshi Warriors, and Mai walk in. They hugged and Aurora sighed. "Being that the kemurikage are fake doesn't make this any easier. Your sister must find the goodness in her heart for you to end this war for good."
   "Zuko, I have to tell you something." Mai said. She explained how her father had founded the New Ozai Society.
   "Why would you keep that from me?"
   "It's my dad, Zuko! No matter how evil he is, I still don't like the idea of betraying him! You of all people should understand that!"
   Zuko sighed. "You're right. I'm sorry."
   "I think he already knows about the kemurikage. He might even know it's Azula."
   Zuko commanded his general to seal the city shut, no one in or out, and to arrest Ukano.
   "Zuko, this isn't the way!"
   Zuko and Aang argued for awhile then Rose stood up. "Enough! We will not resolve this by arguing. Zuko, do whatever you have to. Aang, Aurora, and I will do some digging."
   Zuko nodded. " Don't do anything reckless."
   Rose smirked. "C'mon, darling, you know me better than that."
   "That's exactly what has me worried."
                              * * * * *
   Back at the shelter, Ukano threw open the door for the fake kemurikage to bring in more children. Kiyi fought the one holding her. "The sedative wore off early on this one."
   "I feel sorry for you!" Kiyi shouted at the woman who finally put her down.
   "And why is that?"
   "Cuz my big brother is Fire Lord Zuko and my big sis is the Avatar and they're gonna kick your butt!"
   "Why you little--!"
   She was interrupted by another fake kemurikage grabbing her arm. "Don't waste your time."
   Azula and her new band met up in secret. "How much longer are we gonna have to do this?" One complained. "I didn't sign up to run a daycare, Azula."
    "Patience, Zirin." Azula replied smoothly. "After all, I broke you out of that horrible institution." At Ukano's entrance, she added, "Now, ladies, if you'd give us a moment, Ukano and I need to discuss the next steps."
   As they left, Ukano whispered, "They have a point. We can't keep this going on forever."
   "How much do you love the Fire Nation, Ukano?"
   "Do you even need to ask? You know how much I sacrificed for the Fire Nation?" Ukano asked. "What more must I do?"
   "Ukano, Ukano, Ukano," Azula shook her head, "don't you get it? For you to get what you want, I need to get what I want. And what I want is a riot."
    "I fail to see how any of this will get Ozai back on the throne."
    Azula laughed. "Ozai has nothing to do with it."
   She smiled deviously.

   As the group began looking for answers, Ty Lee mentioned something she'd noticed years ago growing up. True to her word, they found a secret passageway. They relayed this news to Zuko and (after being spun around in an airball by Aang), he, Rose, Aang, and Aurora headed inside.
                           * * * * *
   With the new stipulations, the citizens grew angry and Ukano's influence didn't help. Soon enough, a riot had started in the streets and Ukano gave Azula an update on this.
   "I've done everything you asked, Azula. Let Tom Tom go. Let all the kids go."
   Azula nodded. "Of course. A deal's a deal after all." Ukano thanked Azula profusely as she began to unlock the door where the children were. "But wait! If we were to release the little darlings right now, what would happen? They'd scamper back to their parents and someone might reveal information about us before we're ready. No one is putting myself and my sisters in danger at this phase."
   Despite Ukano's protests to the contrary, Azula would hear nothing of it. "I'm glad we had this talk." She placed the key back into her pocket and walked away.
                           * * * * *
   The passageway lead them out to a graveyard that Zuko explained was the cemetery for the Fire Nation.
   "I thought that's what the Dragon Bone Catacombs were for?" Aang asked.
   "That's for the Fire Lords. This is where everyone else goes."
   At that moment, the kemurikage appeared, surrounding them. Meanwhile, inside the palace, Iroh and Ophelia walked together, bonding moreso since being brought together.
   "Where'd everyone go?" Iroh wondered aloud.
   "Probably on another one of my daughter's spontaneous adventures." Ophelia chuckled.
   Her laughter stopped as they found Ursa crying. The pair sat with her and comforted her as she wept.
                           * * * * *
   Ursa wasn't the only one in tears. Ukano cried too, disgusted by what he had done in the so called name of his country. He cried for not only his son but all of the children.
   The children heard him and Kiyi decided to try to get out herself. It took a couple tries but when she reminded herself how Zuko and Rose did it, she attempted again and successfully firebended through the door.
   Ukano hugged the children, promising to bring their captors to justice including himself. "But first, let's bring you home to your parents."
                            * * * * *
   Mai chased after Azula who smirked. "I should be thanking you, Mai. After all, you're the one who gave me the idea." She launched into a tale from their childhoods where, after doing something at Azula's behest, Mai, wracked with guilt, had a nightmare that inspired Azula.
   Kei Lo came to Mai's aid and Azula attacked him. "I have to say ZuZu isn't much of a catch but I didn't know you were slumming it up."
   "Leave him alone!"
   "She's right. Leave him alone." Zuko came to the boy's aid.
   "Why? She's not even your girlfriend anymore."
   Rose appeared next to her husband. "Because my Zuko always does the right thing!"
   They attacked and Azula ran. Zuko hesitated but Mai encouraged the pair to chase after Azula.
   Then everything delved into chaos...
                           * * * * *
   The kemurikage attacked as Ukano led them to safety. Luckily, Aurora and Aang were right outside the spot where the kids were and Aurora broke through the wall with a spell.
   "I am so glad we have a witch on our side!"
                          * * * * *
   They caught up to Azula who, as usual, started a fight with Zuko that she, again like usual, won. "Killing me won't get you what you want, Azula. You'll never be Fire Lord."
   Rose stood over her sister by marriage. "And I won't let you take away my happy ending."
   "You two really are nauseating." Azula said. "And I'm not trying to become Fire Lord anymore." She explained how finding their mother had changed things for her.
   "That's great, Azula." Rose and Zuko replied in unison.
   "My destiny is to make you into the Fire Lord I tried to be--one who's strong, one who rules through fear. And with the Avatar at your side, you'll be unstoppable! It's already working."
   "ZuZu? Ro?" A familiar voice called.
   "They found the children. You've lost."
   "Oh I disagree...dear sister." Azula smirked. "Til next time."
   She disappeared as the children ran outside along with Aang, Aurora, Mai, and Kei Lo. Zuko rushed to hug Kiyi as Mai hugged Tom Tom.
   "I was so worried."
   "I wasn't." Kiyi said. "I knew you'd come for me."
   She rushed to be hugged by Rose as well. "You're one brave kid."
                             * * * * *
   That evening, Zuko addressed his people, promising to be a better Fire Lord. Azula watched from afar.
    "How touching!" She replied, sarcastically before she and her sisters disappeared into the night.
