Chapter 21: Like a... Relationship?
Ash
I can't stop thinking about her. I can't sleep. I'm just lying here on my bed thinking about how she was lying here with me yesterday. I want to call her but I don't want to sound desperate. Actually I want to go over to her house and throw rocks at her window till she answers.
15 minutes later
I can't take it anymore I'm calling her.
She picks up on the second ring.
"Hey," I say trying to sound relaxed even though I feel like my heart will explode.
"Hi!" She says excitedly. "I mean hey. What's up?" I can hear the nervousness in her voice and when she face palms herself after she says "what's up?".
"Just calling to say hi and stuff,"
"Oh, so you were thinking about me," I can hear her smiling though the phone.
"No I just, uh," Now I'm the nervous one.
She chuckles. "Relax I'm just kidding,"
"Yeah," I said. "I knew that. So how was your day? Do anything fun?"
"No not really. I went on a run and did homework."
"So your foot is better?"
"Uh, yeah. Turns out Webster Dictionaries are not good breaking bones,"
I chuckled. "I guess so."
It is silent for a moment. It really feels like an eternity.
"Fiona?"
"Yeah,"
"Tell me something about yourself,"
"What do you want to know?"
"Tell me about your family,"
She takes a long pause. She's thinking what say "Do you know my sister, Cally?"
"Uh, no,"
"Well she's the opposite of me. She parties a lot. She's not really home most of the time. She used to be different. She was an absolute nerd." She takes a pause. "My parents are not really home a lot and when they are we don't talk. The only attention I get is when I do something wrong."
"What did they say when you hurt or foot?"
"My mom was mad and I don't think my dad noticed,"
"Do they come to your track meets?"
"No. I used to invite them but they never came."
"Oh, okay."
Another pause/eternity.
"The weather's nice," I say just to change the subject.
She laughs. "That was the worst attempt at a subject change ever," I start to laugh with her "I mean subject changes aren't supposed to be obvious,"
"Yeah, that was pretty bad," I say and chuckle.
There is another pause but this time it's not that awkward. There is no more tension. She is the first to break the silence.
"Ash?"
"Yeah," Before meeting her my name was just my name but now it has a whole new meaning.
"This morning," she pauses and says "Nevermind. Forget it,"
"No, tell me,"
She sighs. "What did that mean?"
"When we..." I took a pause and considered not to finish my sentence but then I did. "Kissed,"
"Yeah. What does that make us?"
"I mean, what do you want us to be?" I asked.
"I don't know. We could be..." I know she's not going to finish she sentence so I do.
"More then friends. Like a... relationship?"
"Yeah, like that. Could we do that or should we just-"
"We should," I say before she can change her mind.
The awkward silence is back.
"Ash? Do you regret what happened?"
"The kiss?" I asked
"Yeah,"
"No. Do you?"
"No," she replied.
"Good. Can I come pick you up tomorrow?"
"Yeah,"
There is another pause.
"What coffee should I bring tomorrow?"
"Surprise me,"
I don't remember who hung up first. All I remember right before I passed out I thought "I'll never get used to the feeling I get when I talk to her. I hope I don't."
