Chapter 3 - Settling In

Taylor's P.O.V:
I decided that I would go down to the beach again today to work on my tan, so I woke up at 8am. I grab my clothes for the day and have a quick shower before getting dressed. I put on my black sport like bikini and my red summer dress. I have a small breakfast before grabbing my belongings and heading to the beach. I put in my headphones and blast my music for the 10 minute walk to the beach. It's not long before I'm sat down on the sand, halfway between the lifeguard tower and a buggy that two lifeguards are sat in, patrolling a rip. I sit down on my towel and start to ready my book.

By now, it's nearly 10 am. Wow guess time really flies when you're having fun. I have a quick drink before admiring the view around me. I look to my right and see a little boy, probably only 3 or 4, wondering around, crying hysterically. I quickly gather up my things and put them into my bag before walking over to him. I kneel down next to him.
"Hi sweetie. Are you lost?" I ask him gently, as not to scare him. He just looks as me and nods.
"Mummy!" He says, before crying even harder.
"How about I help you find your mummy?" I ask, making him smile. He starts to sniffle, but is no longer crying. I pick him up and head towards the tower.
"What your name sweetie?" I ask him as we near the tower.
"Tom" He say, sweetly.
"That a nice name. I'm Taylor. How old are you Tom?" I ask him and we reach the bottom of the steps.
"4!" He says, showing me 4 fingers. I smile as we reach the tower door. I walk in and look up to where there is 2 lifeguards sitting, looking out of the window.
"Ermm, excuse me?" I say, gaining the attention of Tom Bunting.
"How can I help you?" He asks smiling, getting up and walking over.
"Well isn't that funny? Tom here can't find his mommy." I say, bouncing the young boy in my arms, making him giggle.
"Okay, I'll radio the boys. Are you alright to stay with him..." He starts to say, waiting for me to answer with my name.
"Taylor...and of course" I say, as I sit down, with Tom in my lap. Tom B gets mini Tom an ice pop before radioing through to those on the beach. Luckily, it's not long before one of the boy's radio through, saying he's got the mum. Tom B comes over and kneels next to us as we are sat on the stairs.
"Do you wanna come see your mummy?" He asks. Mini Tom nods. I stand up and follow Tom to the quad bike that is parked at the bottom of the stairs. I get on the back – with the help of Tom – and hold on as Tom B starts to drive down to one of the buggies. It's not long before we arrive and reunite mini Tom with his mum, who thanks me many times, before heading back up the beach.
"Thanks for that Taylor, you were really helpful" Tom says.
"Yeah, no worries" Right as I say that, Tom gets called back up to the tower. I hop on the bike with him, having left my things in the tower, before Tom speeds up the beach. When we arrive back in the tower we find a very pale looking Whippet.
"Whip, you alright mate?" Tom asks, placing a hand on his shoulder. Whippet nods his head.
"Yeah mate, just don't feel that great, think I must be dehydrated or something" He says, standing up to get a drink. Tom sits down, and grabs a pair of binos and looks out to the water. Right then, Whippet grabs the railing, swaying a little.
"Actually, I don't feel great" Just then Whippet collapses to the floor. I dive down. Stopping him from whacking his head on the floor before checking his pulse. Tom looks torn between helping his friend and manning the tower he radios over to Hoppo to get him to pop over from his office.
"He's got a strong pulse" I say.
"He's really warm though, do you have any cool packs?" I ask, my medical background kicking in. Tom just looks at me shocked.
"oh, I'm a fully qualified first aider." I say, making Tom nod as Hoppo arrives. Tom explains what happened before grabbing me a couple of cold packs. I place one on the back of his neck, one on his forehead, and one on his chest – after Tom removed his top.
"Can you raise his legs?" I ask Tom. He places Whippets legs up on a chair, before kneeling down next to me.
"I think he's just worn out and is suffering from heat exhaustion." I say, considering its around 30'c today.
Soon enough Whippet starts to come around. Tom steps in, calming him down considering he doesn't know me yet. We sit him up against the wall and hand him a drink. 30 minutes later he is looking much better. He is up and about, working in the tower.
"Ermm, thanks" He says.
"oh, I'm Taylor, and really it was nothing" He shakes his head and pulls me in for a hug.
"Seriously, without you I could've hurt myself when I fell" He says, making me chuckle. I stay and chat with the boys for a bit before Hoppo come back in, having just spoken with Tom in his office.
"Taylor, can I have a word with you in my office?" He asks. I look at the boys worried.
"Don't worry, you're not in trouble" He says, making us all chuckle before I stand up and follow him out to his office.

He unlocks the door and we both take a seat. I fiddle with my fingers – something I've always done when I'm nervous – and wait to hear what Hoppo has to say.
"So first off, I want to thanks you for your help today. Not only did you help with a missing child but you also helped a lifeguard in need and kept everyone calm. Upon hearing this, I wanted to make you an offer." He says, smiling at me.
"Okay..." I say, unsure of what he means or is going to say.
"Well, we have a traineeship available. Now with this traineeship it can be adapted to suit the needs of the person and the work that is needed to be done. Now I would like to know if you wanted to be a lifeguard that specialises in the medical side – however throughout the first year we will train you up and hopefully have you then working in the water and on the beach. How does that sound?" I just stare at him speechless.

"Ermm...yes! I mean, that would be amazing..." I say, trailing off.
"Okay, well how about we sign some papers now...and if all goes well you can start 1 week Monday? Give you some time to settle in?" I nod my head frantically, filled with nerves and excitement.
"Yes, that would be great...ermm can you not mention this to anyone. I want it to be a surprise"
"Sure" Hoppo smiles. I'm pretty sure he knows who I want to surprise.

We spend the next hour going through paper work and stuff like that. I fill out a form for Hoppo to send off so that he can order my size uniform. Afterwards, I head back over to the lifeguard tower, using the excuse that I went to have some food. I knock on the back door and wait for someone to answer. Tom opens the door and smiles at me, knowing what Hoppo and I just discussed. I duck under his arm as he holds the door open for me and walk inside. I stop Tom from walking back to the main area.
"Hey, ermm Thanks. I took the job...but we're keeping it on the down low because I want to surprise everyone" I say, making his smile.
"Okay, and congrats" He says, giving me a quick hug before we sit and join the other lifeguard on tower duty, which now happens to be Jake.
"So, you must be Taylor." He says, shaking my hand.
"Yep, that's me and you're Jake" He looks confused before I tell them about how I've watched all of Bondi Rescue. Both of them chuckle before continuing to look out at the water.

"Right, I'm off guys. I'll stop by in the next few days, I have a lot of stuff to get done" I say, standing up and grabbing my things.
"Bye Taylor" They both say, as I let myself out of the backdoor. I put in my headphones and walk up the promenade, heading home. I wave down onto the beach as I see Chappo, sat with Yatesy down in backpackers. I continue my walk home and let myself in once I arrive. I quickly change into a pair of sport shorts, with a matching sports bra and a top over the top before starting some house work. I switch on my speaker and blast some music, before getting to work. I have to unpack, sort out the apartment and still buy new things to make the place homelier. It's going to be a busy few days.
