Chapter 10- Just a Normal Day

A/N – Hey guys sorry I haven written about Christmas, but I started to write a chapter but didn't get it finished in time so I've decided to do a time skip and I'll edit and save that chapter for either their anniversary or Chappo's birthday. Thanks for your understanding.

"Uh! I'm bored..." I groan, making Whippet laugh as he continues to scan the water. Sometimes tower duties suck.
"Here..." Whippet says, handing me the AUX cable so I can plug my phone into the speaker.
"Oh..." I say, flicking through my playlist until I find a song I like. Seconds later I click play making 'This is Me' from the Greatest Showman come on.
"Good choice" Whippet says, popping his head along to the music.

A few minutes there's a knock on the door. I get up and walk over to it before swinging it open.
"Hi, how can I help?" I say, looking at a man, probably in his early 20's.
"Err, I've cut my leg" I says, turning his leg to show me the cut.
"Oh- that looks nasty. Come in" I say, allowing him to walk past me and out to the balcony. I then proceed to wash the wound before dressing it with some gauze and a bandage.
"That's all I can do I'm afraid...you'll defiantly need stitches." I say, as I pack away the things I used.
"Thank you" The guy says, before walking down the steps and away onto the beach. After clearing up I go and sit next to Whip again in the tower.
"Hey guys" Hoppo says, after we hear the back door open and close again.
"Hi" We both respond, as I turn to give him a smile before picking up a pair of binos and scanning the water.
"I know it's a lot to ask but can either of you stay to cover until 7? Jake called in sick a little while ago and I can't find anyone to cover" Hoppo says, looking between us.
"I can" I say, before Whippet has a chance to even breathe.
"Great thanks Taylor" Hoppo says, before making his way down onto the beach.

Shortly after 12 (midday) Chappo makes his way up to the tower after being relived by Jethro who came in for his shift.
"Ready to go?" Chappo asks, considering I was meant to be finished as well.
"I'm on till 7. Jake called in sick, so I said I'll cover" I say, giving him a hug.
"Okay, how about I come pick you up after work and we can go out for dinner?" Chappo says, making me happy.
"Sure" I say, giving him a kiss before he picks up his stuff and leaves.
"Right Whip, I'll se ya later I'm down at Backpackers with Corey"
"Byeee" He says hanging out the window as I make my way to the quad bike. Even though I'm not water trained or certified yet, I still swap with some of the boys so that I'm not always in the tower and they're not always out in the sun.
I drive down to backpackers and swap with Deano who makes his way back up the beach on the quad.
"Hello" I say, handing Corey a bottle of water that I brought with me.
"Hey, thanks" He says, excepting the water as I sit down in the buggy.
"So how's things?" Corey asks, having not seen me for like a week or two.
"Things are good. Oh- injury" I say, as we see a guy holding his arm out with what looks to be a dislocated shoulder.
"Hey mate, need a hand?" I ask, as he makes his way over to us.
"yes – ah – please" He says, as I help him sit of the back of the rhino.
"Corey are you going to be alright here if I leave the board and take this guy up to the tower?" I say, making sure the guy is sat properly.
"Yeah sure go ahead." He says, grabbing the board before I hop in the driver's seat and start driving up to the tower.
"Come up here mate" I say, getting out of the rhino once we're outside the tower. I help him to the tower and sit him down before grabbing the green whistle.
"Need an ambo?" Deano says, popping his head over the cupboard.
"Please" I say, as I get the guy inhaling the green whistle.
"Right- I'm gunna get the buggy back down to Corey, can you keep an eye on this guy?" I say, stopping in the doorway to check before leaving.
"Yeah sure" Whippet says, hopping up and walking round to the guy.
I hop back in the Rhino as start making my way back down to backpackers, when something catches my eye, making me speed up. I reach over and grab my radio as I near where Corey is.
"Guys call the coppers, we've got someone on the cliffs" I say, as I pull up next to Corey and hop out.
"I'm going up!" I shout into my radio, before sprinting up to the stairs that lead up to the cliffs. I can hear all the boys chatting over the radio but ignore them as I come closer and closer towards the cliffs. As I reach the top, I cautiously make my way over to the girl that is now stood right on the edge.
"Hi..." I say gently, trying not to scare her.
"Go away!" She shouts, obviously crying.
"What's your name? My names Taylor" I say, slowly edging my way towards her as I see the boys racing up the beach.
"Meg...Megan." She stutters, choking on tears and sobs.
"Megan can you do me a favour? Can you take a step towards me?" I ask, stopping where I am as I get close enough to her.
"No...I don't want this anymore! I just want everything, everyone to stop!" She screams.
"Make what stop honey?"
"The fighting. The swearing. The abuse" She says, turning slightly, allowing me to see her face and neck which are covered in bruises.
"Megan, I can help. I can help you if you just move away from the edge" I say, reaching out to take hold of her hand if she moves.
"No...They won't stop..." She chokes, tears streaming down her face.
"Megan...look at me. I promise I can help you" I say, wiping the tear that falls down my face.
"I'm sorry..." She says, getting ready to move. But before I can reach out she takes a step back and goes over the edge.
"No!" I scream, moving forward, only knowing its too late. I take a few steps back before turning around, knowing I have to speak to the police.
"You alright?" Whippet says, handing me a hoodie before giving me a hug. I just nod my head before I'm called away by one of the police officers.

After sitting and giving a statement to the police about what happened for nearly an hour, I'm finally allowed to leave. By now its already 7pm and most of the beach is empty due to it being such a breezy evening. Some of the boys heard what happened and came down to help pack away and to check on everyone – me in particular. Everyone had tried talking to me but I just walked away. I think they understood and left me alone. I walked down to the promenade and sat down, the furthest away from everyone as possible. I pull me hair out from its ponytail and let it fall so it was in its natural beach wave/curly state. And then I just sat and thought. Thought about how it would have turned out if I did something differently. Or what would have happened if I had spotted her sooner. The thoughts just whiz round my head and I can't get rid of them. Right as I started crying I heard light footsteps behind me and then someone sits down next to me. I look to my right and see Chappo looking down at my sympathetically.
"You okay?" He says, rubbing my back. I don't reply instead I just shake me head no as the tears begin to flow. He wraps his arms around me and lets me cry into his chest.
"Shhh, it's okay" He says comforting me whilst slowly and gently rubbing my back. I pull away slightly before talking.
"I tried to stop her..." I whispered, surprised that he could even hear me. Obviously, he did because he uses his hand to pull my chin up so I'm looking at him.
"This wasn't your fault. You did everything you could. Some people just can't be saved..." He says. It takes a few minutes for his words to sink in but when they do I nod my head but continue to stay in his warm, comforting embrace.
"Come on let's get you home" Chappo says, standing up before offering me his hands. I give a small smile as I reach up and let him pull me up. He wraps his arm around my waist as we slowly make our way back to the tower to get my things. Instead of changing I just slip into my trainers and grab my bag. Before I leave all the boys give me a hug and tell me that they're there if I need them. Whippet especially pulled me aside and said if I need him to call him – regardless of the time. I thanked everyone before leaving with Chappo. I hopped in the car as he started it up and pulled away. On the way home we picked up MacDonald's and some snacks before curling up in bed together watching Mrs Doubtfire.

Todays been a tough day. A day that I will never forget but I can't and wont let it stop me on my colossal journey. A journey that's only just beginning.

Please tell me what you think...It was tough to write this chapter, but I thought it was something that is important to talk about and mention that this is something the Lifeguards deal with in real life. This is the type of event that can either drag a person down or make them even stronger. It's incredibly hard to go through something like this and I can only apologise to anyone that has. It's important to be there for people and make them know that they have someone.  In Taylor's case it going to make her stronger and make her realise that life is too short for regrets.
