Taking Steps
(Patton's POV)
I've been home from the hospital for about a week now, but they still won't let me go back to work. It's been actually kind of nice to not have to work because now I get more time to work on my classes for my teaching license. I'm almost done and I'm going to be a TA (teacher's assistant) this fall for a semester before hopefully getting my own classes. I was actually working on some courses earlier, but now I'm just looking online for furniture and paint samples. I was interrupted by a knock on the door.
"Come in! It's open!" I yelled without moving from the couch.
"Patton?" I heard Logan's voice while the door opened and shut.
"Yeah I'm in here," I called while shutting the laptop and got up to meet him. I met him in the hall from the entrance to the kitchen. "What's up?" I asked.
"I'm just checking in on you," he said.
I smiled and turned around to walk back into the living room, "You've been checking in on me everyday for a week," I pointed out.
"Yes, but you haven't been coming to the library, so something could have happened and I wouldn't know," he responded.
"I haven't been coming to the library because you've been coming here," I argued back.
"Yes, which is fine with me if it's fine with you."
"Of course it's fine with me, but you don't have to worry about me so much," I said while sinking back onto the couch. Logan sat down next to me, "I'm fine, I'm not going to break," I pouted.
"Don't think of it as me worrying, just think of it as not taking anything for granted," he offered.
"I guess I could live with that," I smiled and moved closer to him. "I like you coming over anyway, you make good food," I teased him.
"Of course that's why you like me here," Logan laughed.
"And I like spending time with you," I added and pecked him on the cheek, "but in all sincerity, what's for dinner?" I asked. Logan laughed again.
"I don't know it's your house! What do you have planned?" he asked back.
"I took out chicken, but otherwise the kitchen's yours," I shrugged.
"You know it might be nice to have someone make me dinner," he said with a smirk.
"OH but Logan I'm INJURED!" I cried dramatically and sprawled myself across his lap, "I don't think I could muster the strength to do it!" I scrunched my face up for a moment, but couldn't hold it and burst into a fit of giggles. The laughing did still hurt a bit, but the time off and the plethora of drugs I was taking were definitely doing their jobs.
"I guess I'll have no choice but to make you dinner again," he rolled his eyes again, "What would you like?"
"Pasta," I said.
"Again?"
"Pasta," I repeated.
"You could benefit from other foods too, like salad, or rice, or wraps, or melts, or any other number of dishes," he pushed.
"But I want pasta," Logan still seemed like he wanted to argue, "Please Lo? Life's short! Eat pasta while you still can!"
"Ok, ok, ok, I'll make your pasta!" he put his hands up in defeat, "Would you mind getting up so I can start cooking?" he asked, and I scrambled to sit back up. He got up and I stretched my arms out and he pulled me up to my feet. Because why get up on your own when you can have your soulmate help you? He went out to the kitchen and I trailed behind him. I watched as he started pulling things out of cabinets and I decided to pull up a chair next to the counter and keep him company.
"Soooooooo," I started and he glanced at me, "any plans for the weekend?" I asked.
"Actually yes," he said and I felt my heart drop a bit, "It's my little brother's birthday and he's coming down with my mother to celebrate," he finished.
"Oh," I paused, "Um if this is too big of a step that's fine, but umm," I gulped, "could I come?" Logan blinked and I froze.
"Yes, I hoped you would," he answered and I sighed in relief.
"Really?"
"Yes, I hoped you would want to meet them. It might make my mother happy," Logan fidgeted with his glasses.
"Yay! It's only fair since you had the honor of meeting my mom already," I grinned.
The corner of Logan's mouth quirked up, "Yes, and an honor it was," he nodded, but then frowned and added, "despite the circumstances."
"Yeah, I think meeting your mom might be a little happier interaction," I agreed. Logan had turned back to the food and seemed lost in thought. When he didn't speak for a while I grew slightly concerned, "My mom loves you. You know that right Lo?"
"I know, I just think about it a lot when I probably shouldn't," he answered without looking away from the ingredients in front of him.
"What do you mean?" I pried.
"Just... the circumstances, I think about how my first time meeting Sarah should have been a happy thing, and you never should have been in the hospital in the first place, and what if me discovering that you were my soulmate was because this fell off," he sighed and pulled at his gem. "I'm sorry, I just think too much sometimes," he shook his head.
"You know you can talk about it, right?" I offered.
"Shouldn't you be the one who needs to talk?" he asked. I shook my head.
"I didn't even know I was shot until I was already almost completely better. You guys are the ones that really had to go through it," I explained. "I know my mom and dad needed each other, Roman and Virge spent a lot of time together. Mom told me that you were at the hospital by yourself a lot; that's a lot of time with your own thoughts without a lot of venting," I added.
Logan shook his head again, "I was just worried," he poured noodles into the boiling water and started throwing chicken in a pan.
"Mmk," I wasn't convinced, but decided that it was maybe a topic for another time. "You want help with dinner?" I got up and went to his side, waiting for instructions.
"Um, if you want to stir this while I chop up some vegetables," he nodded towards the bowl next to him and I grabbed a whisk and went to work.
Time went by and soon enough we had a meal in front of us. "Balsamic pasta salad with pan seared chicken and freshly chopped vegetables," Logan presented with a small glint of pride in his eyes.
"Looks amazing Logan, thank you," I gave him another peck on the cheek.
"I can't take all the credit."
"I stirred the vinaigrette" I scoffed, "You definitely deserve all the credit."
"As long as you enjoy it," he said and pulled out a chair for me. I found my insides melting again. Logan's actually the best person alive, and I suddenly hated the fact that he was sitting across the table from me. The three feet between us were three feet too much.
"Ya know, I think I would enjoy it more in the living room," I smiled sweetly.
"Patton," Logan sighed, "Studies show that eating at a dinner table as a nightly family ritual helps with mental attitude."
"It's just us two and just for tonight," I whined. Logan pursed his lips and looked like he was debating with himself before speaking again.
"Fine, but just for tonight," he gave in.
"Thank you!" I chirped and grabbed my plate and his hand and dragged him to the living room. I set my plate on the coffee table and plopped onto the couch. Logan set his plate down, but stood standing.
"Would you like something to drink?" He offered.
"Oh, uh, yeah. Sorry I totally spaced it," I said sheepishly.
"I'll be right back," and he disappeared again. He came back with two glasses of water and set them down on the table. He sat down and I shifted to get so close to him I was almost in his lap. Logan huffed a laugh and stared at me for a moment, "Patton, are you alright?" He asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine. I just don't know how I went two months without being this close to you," I mumbled and Logan went red, but I didn't care. It was true, I didn't even know it was missing, but now just holding Logan's hand makes the world feel like it couldn't possibly be bad.
"Me neither, any longer and I think it would have killed me."
"Well it's a good thing I kissed you in the hospital then isn't it?" I commented.
"I'm not disagreeing, but I was going to ask you out. You just kissed me first," Logan defended.
"It's nice to know you liked me back," I sighed and grabbed my plate. Logan followed suite.
"Of course I did," He said as he stared at his meal in front of him, "It took me a while and figuring it out was terrifying, but facts are facts, and the fact was that you had become the most important thing to me," he stated.
"Awwww Lo! That's the sweetest thing I've ever heard!" I gushed, "Still glad I made the first move. It was a nice kiss."
"Yes, best I've ever had," Logan agreed and took a bite of pasta.
"It was the only you've ever had!" I laughed.
"True. You didn't have much of a standard to beat," he smiled.
"Well now I do. Should we try raising the bar?" I hummed and leaned closer to him. Logan turned a shade of red so bright it put Roman's wardrobe to shame.
"Food's getting cold," he squeaked and snapped his attention to his plate.
"Logan, it's a cold salad," I smirked. Logan gulped which made me bubble with giggles, "I'm teasing you," I whispered as I shifted away from him and began eating my food. "So how was work?" I asked between bites.
Logan blinked and seemed to be trying to recalibrate but eventually answered, "Pretty uneventful, but nothing bad happened so that's good. It's still weird not having you at the library."
"Sorry Lo, I'm just trying to get so much done before work starts for me again, and you come here."
"Oh no need to apologize. I think you are absolutely doing the right thing," Logan cut me off, "How's all that going anyway?"
"Pretty good actually. Just a few more hours on the training which I'm getting done next Tuesday then the medical screening the week after that. I should have no problem finishing my online courses for my license before school starts. The only thing I'm stuck on is the whole designing thing," I pointed at the laptop on the coffee table, "I was staring at that thing for at least an hour before you got here and I'm not any further," I whined.
"It's alright," Logan consoled, "We have time and I'm sure Roman and Virge would be more than happy to help," he added.
"Yeah, I just want everything to work out," I took a big bite of pasta to try and eat my stress away.
"You're doing great, I promise, and when you need it I can help. You just have to ask," he offered. I smiled weakly and kept eating. Then something clicked in my head.
"It's Thursday!" I exclaimed.
"Yes....?" Logan confirmed, but sounded confused. Then something clicked in his head, "Oh have you not gotten to watch your show yet?" He asked.
"Nope! We're going to have to watch it," I started but then corrected myself, "Unless you don't want to, I can wait. It's alright we can watch something else. We don't have to. What would you like to watch?" I rambled and looked down, feeling dumb. Logan grabbed the remote and got into Netflix.
"This the right episode?" He asked.
"Huh?" I looked up and blinked as I saw the Miraculous title screen on the TV. "Lo, we don't have to watch it."
"It's alright, I know enough about the show from what you tell me it's not like I'll be lost," Logan insisted.
"Thanks Logan," I said softly, "It actually means a lot... as simple as it is," I set my now empty plate on the table and moved to snuggle him closer. He put an arm around me and we started the episode. It was such a simple scene, but it meant everything to me. We were watching a cartoon... and he was ok with it. My entire life I'd been made fun of in school for always preferring to play house than video games. I was always too childish, too emotional, too girly. But Logan was ok with my dumb sappy cartoons. We stayed like that for a while. Normally I would just watch one episode, but I had no interest in moving so we just let it run. Half way through the third episode I must have dozed off because I closed my eyes and then Logan was shaking me awake and the credits were on the screen.
"I think it might be time for bed," Logan whispered.
"Hmm? Oh. I didn't.." I stretched and rubbed my eyes behind my glasses.
"It's alright Patton, I'll clean up the dishes and leave. You can go to bed," He pushed my bangs out of my face and I squinted at him trying to process through the sleep.
"Erm no, I'll help," I got up and immediately fell back onto the couch which made Logan chuckle.
"Just go to bed," Logan pressed.
"I guess, but you don't have to go home, you can sleep here, or crash on the couch, or whatever. I'll make breakfast to make up for it," I offered sleepily. Logan smiled and pushed me towards my bedroom, "Ok, ok, I'm going. Good night."
"Good night Patton," he said back and I went to bed. I'm sure I was out before I even hit the pillow.
Morning came quickly and I got up to make breakfast. If I'm being honest I forgot about Logan and when I saw his sleeping figure on the couch I had a small heart attack. Then I realized how cute he was with his glasses off and his hair all messed up. I made my way to the kitchen smiling like an idiot. I dug around my kitchen to see what I could cook up. I decided on egg and ham sandwiches with some fruit on the side. Yummy, but still decently healthy so Logan couldn't say anything. I was just cutting up the fruit to finish it all off when Logan trudged into the kitchen.
"Morning!" I chirped.
"Good Morning Patton," he said drowsily, "What are you making?"
"Breakfast. What would you like to drink? I've got coffee, tea, juice, milk, water," I listed off choices.
"I'm not picky," he said as he sat down at the table.
I looked at him for a moment and decided, "You need coffee."
"I'm not disagreeing."
"Good," and I went to make some coffee.
We ate breakfast and drank coffee for a while and then we made a plan for the day.
"I should probably go back to the apartment and get ready for my family to come over," Logan said as he cleaned his plate and cup. "You're more than welcome to come over if you would like, otherwise if you want to stay here and get stuff done, that's fine too."
"No, I'll go with you. Just give me a minute to get ready," Logan nodded and I quickly cleaned my dishes and rushed to my room to get ready. I brushed my teeth and then began the morning struggle of picking an outfit. I stared at my closet for a while as I stressed over what to wear. Meeting the family. Nice, but not over the top. I didn't want to wear my regular work outfit, but a printed T-shirt seemed too casual. In the end I decided on a baby blue button up shirt and blue jeans. I made sure my shirt was tucked in and wrestled with my stupid, blond curls for a bit before heading into the kitchen. "How do I look?"
Logan turned to look at me, "Wonderful."
"I want to make a good impression," I stressed.
"Honestly Patton, you could wear a $5 t-shirt from Walmart and she wouldn't love you any less," he said. My shirt with a corgi with sunglasses on flashed in my head, but no, I want to look kinda nice.
"You're sure I look ok?" I fussed. Logan smiled and nodded, "Ooook I guess. Should we go?"
"Yeah, I'm ready if you are," Logan nodded.
I blew out a breath, "Ok, let's go," I grabbed the keys and when Logan was out I locked the house behind us. We walked to the bus stop and waited to get picked up, "Ya know, a car might not be a bad investment. I have a license, I just never really needed it with the daycare close by. I drove down here from Georgia and sold it to help with the house," I commented.
"Yeah. I have a license too, but I never go anywhere besides the library and paying for parking at the apartment was more expensive than it was worth," Logan agreed.
"Another thing to go on the list," I sighed. We got on the bus that took us to the right part of town and I followed Logan from there since I actually had no idea where his apartment is. We got to the right building and I followed Logan up the stairs. I looked at the number and had to giggle. 221 with a sticker that just had the letter "B" stuck on the door next to the number. "Was the apartment number a coincidence?" I asked. Logan went a light pink.
"Sort of. There were other apartments on the third floor, but I like Sherlock and Virgil didn't care," he explained.
"Cute," I said to myself. Logan unlocked the door and we went inside. We turned two corners and saw three people sitting on living room couch. Virgil, Roman, and a girl who looked around college age.
"Sup guys?" Roman greeted us.
"Just came home to clean up a bit and get ready for my family coming over. Who's this?" Logan answered and asked.
"This is my little sister," Roman started.
"Missy," the girl finished.
Logan went over to the couch to shake her hand, "Oh. Nice to meet you, Missy I'm—"
"Logan." She cut him off and shook his hand, "And you're Patton, right?" She looked at me.
"Yeah that's me," I nodded and went to shake her hand.
"How long are you all going to be here?" Logan asked.
"Sorry Logan, I forgot about your brother's birthday. I told Roman that he could introduce Missy to me and hang out for the day. We can go somewhere else if you want," Virgil spoke up.
"It's fine as long as you guys don't mind," Logan responded.
"Is there going to be food?" Missy asked.
I looked at Roman and whispered loudly, "I like her," which made both Roman and Missy giggle.
"Yes there will be food, I'm making my brother's favorite: shredded chicken sandwiches," Logan sighed.
"Oh he's got good taste," Missy chirped, "How old is he turning? Is he cute?" She asked.
Logan eyes slightly widened and he blinked at her. Virgil and I burst into laughter and Roman elbowed his little sister.
"Missy!" He scolded. Missy rose her hands in defense.
"Just asking!"
"Um. He's uh, turning 19," Logan stammered.
Missy raised an eyebrow, "Age gap?" Roman looked like he was staring lasers into his sister.
"Seven years," Logan said flatly, "I'm 26."
"Cool," Missy shrugged and leaned back on the couch. Roman groaned and rested his head in his hands. Virgil rubbed his back, but was chuckling and Missy winked at him.
"I'm going to get ready and start throwing chicken in the crockpot," Logan said slowly and walked away. I decided that there was not enough room for another person on the couch and sat in the chair next to it.
"So... did you two have fun last night?" Roman grinned at me.
"Oh yes, we had pasta and watched three episodes of Miraculous," I nodded. Missy glanced at her brother and started giggling.
"Nothing, ya know, crazy though?" Roman inquired. I tilted my head to the side.
"We ate dinner in the living room if that's what you mean?" I offered. Virgil spit out a laugh and Missy was cackling now.
"You're so cute!" she giggled.
"I uh, I'm not sure why, but thanks I guess," I smiled awkwardly.
Eventually Missy and Virgil stopped laughing and Logan came out of his room. He was now dressed in a blue and black flannel and jeans and carrying something in his hands.
"Virgil, do you mind wrapping this for me? I meant to last night, but obviously never got to it," he rubbed the back of his neck and handed it to Virgil.
"Uh sure," Virgil took the gift. Logan nodded and went to the kitchen.
"Virge, if you want I can do it. You can stay with Roman and Missy," I offered.
"You sure?" he asked.
"Yeah of course. It'll only take a few minutes," I reassured him and grabbed the gift.
"Ok," Virgil shrugged, "The wrapping paper is in the closet next to the door." I nodded and went to pick out a wrapping paper. The gift was a printed canvas photo, or two of them. Half of the canvas was a photo of two boys. One of them looked like a teenage Logan and the other was a preteen boy who I'm guessing is his brother. The little boy was wearing red robes and a graduation cap. He was holding a paper certificate that had "Elementary Graduate!" printed on it in bright colors. Logan was dressed in school uniform and was hugging his little brother. Both of them were smiling and both of them had braces. It was adorable. The other half had a picture of what looked like Logan's college graduation. This time Logan was in the cap and gown and his brother was clinging to his side. Their mom was in this one and had one arm wrapped around Logan and the other holding a picture of a man who I'm assuming was their dad.
"They're our backgrounds on our phones," Logan said behind me. I jumped out of my flipping skin.
"Oh my God, Logan you scared me," I breathed and turned around to face him.
"Sorry."
"It's fine, just made me jump," I smiled at him, "They're cute pictures."
"My brother has his 6th grade graduation picture on his phone and my college one is the background on mine. I figured with him getting older he'll probably want pictures of his friends or something on his phone instead a silly one from when he was eleven, so I had them printed out," Logan explained.
"That's adorable Logan," I looked back at the canvas, "I was just about to wrap it," I stepped back and opened the closet door to look for wrapping paper. "What's his favorite color?" I asked and looked at the selection of paper. It was mostly Christmas themed, but a few had patterns on them and one had colored balloons.
"It's between green and blue," he said. The patterned papers were either black, white and grey or orange and red, so I went with the rainbow balloons. I grabbed the scissors and tape in the bag next to the paper and shut the closet.
"Alright I've got this if you need to go back to the food. I'll go to the kitchen when I'm done," I told him and he turned and left. No one was coming for a while so I decided to sit down and wrap the canvas right there in the hallway. I measured, cut, folded, and taped and within a few minutes I was done. I held the now wrapped gift in front of me to make sure it looked good and brought it to the kitchen. Logan was standing at a counter throwing seasoning and broth into a crockpot. "Logan where do you want this?" I asked him and waved the present in my hand.
"Um, my room is the second room to the right in the main hall, it's next to the bathroom. Could you just throw it on my bed? Well, don't throw it too hard; we wouldn't want the paper to tear," he corrected.
"I get what you mean," I giggled and went on a mission to find Logan's room.
It didn't take long considering I was given instructions and it was a small apartment, but hey, mission complete. It was a pretty plain room. Grey walls, white bed frame with black pillows and blankets(neatly made), a desk and bookcase one one wall and a squishy black chair and a dresser on the other. There were posters of Doctor Who, Harry Potter, and Sherlock along the wall with the chair on it. There was a blue, fluffy rug on the floor in front of the bed. I looked at the posters for a bit then set the present on Logan's bed and went back out to the kitchen. Logan was cleaning up the kitchen when I got there.
"Your room's nice," I commented.
"Thank you, I get that the posters might be a bit strange, but I confess: I am still a massive nerd. I haven't changed that much from highschool," He rubbed the back of his neck.
"Don't worry, I'm not judging," I giggled.
"If you want to go back in the living room, I'll be there in a bit. Just cleaning up."
"Ok, don't take too long," and I went to the living room. The three of us talked for a while before Logan came in. Virgil suggested we play a game while we waited for time to pass and we all decided on Clue(which Logan destroyed all of us at). After the game we decided to watch a movie until Logan's family got here. There wasn't much for movie selection, but Virgil seemed to like Disney enough to have Zootopia laying around so that's what we watched. Virgil, Roman, and Missy resumed their place on the couch, Logan sat in the chair, and I sat on the floor in front of Logan and used his legs as a backrest. Towards the end of the movie Logan had to get up and shred the chicken for the sandwiches later, so I stole his chair. After the movie was over Roman decided he needed to let everyone know how great of a movie it was and went on a ten minute rant about it. In the middle of it Logan came back into the living room and listened while leaning against the wall. After that rant we all just had a discussion about which Disney movies were the best. Missy likes Tangled, Logan likes Big Hero 6, I like Winnie the Pooh and the Secret Life of Pets, Virgil just said he hates Snow White, and Roman had a meltdown when facing the question. He was beginning a speech on how much a goddess Idina Menzel is when he was interrupted by a knock on the door.
"That's probably them," Logan spoke up and went to answer the door.
Nerves started to settle in. I swallowed hard and started messing with my shirt, making sure it was straight, no stains in it. Suddenly I hated the dirty blond mop on my head and my glasses weren't clean enough.
"You'll be fine, Patton," Roman attempted to assure me with a thumbs up.
"I don't know, a lot of things could go wrong," Virgil muttered. I felt my eyes widen and Roman elbowed his soulmate.
"Don't listen to him Pat, it's going to be great!" Roman pushed.
I started hearing voices from the entrance hall and thought I was going to throw up. "Your brother is still downstairs in the car. He wanted to finish the song that was on so he'll be up in a minute or two. It's lovely to see you by the way," Logan came back into the livingroom with his mother at his side, "Oh hiii Virgil! So glad to see you again," She looked right past me and waved to Virgil, who waved back.
"Nice to see you too Mrs. Seach."
"Oh, I told you to call me Nancy!" she corrected him. Logan looked at me and seemed to notice I was off. Great, I look as nervous as I feel.
"Mom, I'm so glad you're here, and I have a bit of a surprise for you actually," he looked at me and I fidgeted with my glasses.
"You know it's your brother's birthday right?" Logan's mom, Nancy, looked confused.
"Yes, this just happened to fall around the same time," Logan explained, "I uh, I met my soulmate."
I held my breath as I waited for her reaction. Nancy stared at her son for a moment as this settled in. Then I think she may have actually exploded. She jumped up and hugged Logan so tight I thought he might fall over. "Oh my God Logan that's amazing! I'm so happy for you! That's all I've ever wanted for you! Are you happy?" her eyes watered up and I felt slightly better. If she was this excited then surely she'd be ok with me, right? "When do I get to meet her?" Nancy looked around the room and the comfort that I had just felt was gone as soon as it arrived. Her. I'm not a her. I was frozen for a while, but eventually got my legs to move and I took a shaky step forward.
"Um a-actually ma'am. I'm Logan's s-so-soulmate," I stammered. Nancy looked between me and Logan. Her face looked like her brain was clicking through emotions until it found the right one. First she was blank, then confused, then shocked, then horrified. I wanted to cry. I wanted her to like me so bad, but if she wanted me to be a she then we were already off to a bad start.
"Oh my god," Nancy whispered. The whole room felt tense and I wished I could shrink away. "Oh my God! I'm so sorry for assuming!" she rushed over to me and put her hands on my shoulders. "I'm so sorry! It doesn't matter to me I swear!" Relief hit me like a tidal wave. She looked over her shoulder back to Logan, "This isn't why you never told me about crushes in high school is it? Logan you know I love you no matter what. You didn't think I wouldn't accept you did you? Logan I love you so much and I'm sure he's a lovely young man!" she rambled. She looked like she was about to start crying, "What's your name sweetie?" she looked back at me.
"P-Patton," I squeaked.
"Oh Patton you're adorable," she exclaimed and pulled me into a hug, "See Logan we're friends already! You had nothing to worry about!" she fussed. Logan walked over and pulled her off of me.
"Mom, I wasn't worried about you, I promise," he assured her, "I know you're smart enough not to hate someone over something they can't control. I just honestly never had any feelings for anyone before Patton," Logan elaborated. Nancy took a breath.
"Oh, ok. Good. Because I do Logan, I love you very much, too much to ever judge you for something as silly as who you love," she wiped her eyes, "More than nice to meet you Patton," she smiled sweetly.
"Nice to meet you too, erm, Nancy. Right?" she nodded and I blew out a breath. Logan got closer and pulled me to his side. At seeing our gems turn pink Nancy started crying again.
"I'm so happy for you two!" said through tears.
"I found my soulmate too!" Virgil piped up, "This is Roman!" he pointed to his soulmate and Roman waved. Nancy laughed.
"Nice to meet you Roman, and congratulations to you both," she smiled and wiped her tears away. Just as the commotion from Nancy settled another voice was heard from the hall.
"Logan! I'm here! It's your brother!" and soon Logan's brother was in the living room as well. Logan went to greet his brother who pulled him into a hug. He looked a lot like Logan actually. Imagine a young Logan with a haircut, no glasses, an athletic build, and... louder. They had the same dark hair, blue eyes, and sharp face.
For the first time since guests arrived Missy spoke up, "Well Logan, I have the honor of telling you that yes, your brother is cute," she said smugly. Logan's brother's attention snapped to the blonde sitting on the couch. Roman was now back to shooting lasers into his sister and Virgil covered his face with his hood. "What's your name, cutie?"
"Pranks," he answered and crossed his arms over his chest.
"Pranks? What? Were you the class clown or something?" Missy asked.
"Yes, but it's actually an acronym of my first name, last name, and all four of my middle names. My real name's Patrick, but I'm not the fondest of sharing a name with Spongeboob Squaretrousers' best friend. Logan got named after our dad, I got named after Granddad," Pranks explained.
"Ah yes, dear grandpa with four middle names," Missy teased.
"Exactly. And what's your name? Blonde hair, green eyes, freckles. Let me guess. Rapunzel?" Pranks grinned mischievously.
"No," Missy growled.
"But it's something cute right? Probably ending in the 'ie' sound. Amy? Annie? Sopie? Mimi?"
"Missy," she cut him off.
"Ah so close. Next time princess," he smirked at her.
"What is happening?" Nancy asked.
"Excellent question," Roman and Logan answered in unison while looking at their siblings.
"Sorry Mom, didn't realize I wasn't allowed to tell a young lady she looks like royalty," Pranks apologized and winked at Missy. Missy was now bright pink and I had to bite my tongue to keep myself from laughing. Virgil on the other hand did not care.
"That was fucking smooth," he said and Roman glared at him. Pranks laughed and just shrugged.
"Well Logan I didn't know you were throwing me a party of people I don't know," he said sarcastically, "Mind introducing me?"
"Sure," Logan cleared his throat, "You know Virgil, that's his boyfriend Roman, this is my boyfriend Patton, and you've obviously met-"
"Princess," Pranks finished.
"Missy," Logan, Roman, and Missy all corrected, which made Pranks laugh again.
"Oh and by the way, hit reverse for a sec," Pranks looked at Logan and nodded his head at me, "You got a boyfriend and didn't tell me?!?!" Pranks added excitedly. I stepped towards Logan and took his hand.
"Soulmate. Actually," I said.
"Oh, my apologies. Let me rephrase that," Pranks paused, "You got a SOULMATE and didn't tell me?!?!?!"
"Sorry, it wasn't that long ago that we found out," Logan apologized.
"How long have you two known each other?" Nancy asked.
"About two months," I answered for Logan.
"Two months isn't a long time to you?" Pranks exclaimed.
"Well we've only known we were soulmates for about a week," I added.
"Hold up, hit that rewind button again. You two knew each other for two months without realizing you were soulmates?" Pranks looked flabbergasted.
"Well Patton went to visit his family for a week and then for three weeks Patton... it was complicated. We found out the day Patton came back from that," Logan defended.
"What you two didn't see each other for three weeks and then ran to one another like two lovesick teenagers at the end of a bad movie? I want the story," Pranks crossed his arms.
"I mean kinda, but not really. The three weeks happened and then I kissed him," I explained.
"Wow. Subtle. I like it," Pranks shook his head.
"I was about to die! I wasn't exactly thinking that far ahead!" I blurted out.
"You were not about to die, you just got over almost dying," Logan corrected.
"YOU WHAT?" Nancy cut in.
"Long story short: Crazy guy with a gun busted into where Patton works and shot him. Patton was in a coma for three weeks and everyone was a mess, especially Logan. Patton woke up and while Logan tried to ask Patton out, Patton kissed him," Virgil called from the couch.
"It was awful," Roman shook his head.
"But he's fine now," Virgil added.
"I'm fine now!" I agreed.
"Oh my God, write a freaking book," Pranks stared at me.
"You're sure you're alright Patton?" Nancy's voice was laced in concern and she put a hand on my shoulder.
"Definitely," I assured her.
"Oooook then. Not to sound rude, but Logan, is dinner done? I'm starving and it smells way too good in here," Pranks jumped to change the subject.
"Yeah it's done whenever you want it. If you want I can pull chairs from the kitchen table out here we'll have more space in the living room," Logan suggested.
"Sounds good to me," Pranks nodded and Logan and Virgil went to move chairs while everyone else dished up. We all got settled into the living room and started eating. It was delicious, which didn't surprise me because I know Logan's a good cook. He's made me pasta seven times already. Dinner conversation was much lighter than me almost dying. Pranks talked about how college was going and we all told stories about our college experiences. After everyone was stuffed Logan and I went to clean up the kitchen. It didn't take long for Pranks to call and ask when he was getting presents.
"He's not much like you is he?" I giggled.
"No," Logan agreed, "Not at all."
"He seems like a good kid though."
"He is, he just talks more and has a sense of humor," Logan sighed.
"Oh shush, you have sense of humor," I gave a shove.
"Yay." Logan said monotonously. Which made me giggle, which made him smile. "We should probably get him his gifts then," Logan added and I followed him out of the kitchen. I went to living room and sat in a chair and Logan went to his room to grab Pranks' gift.
"Sorry I didn't get you anything. I didn't know it was your birthday until yesterday," I told Pranks sadly, "But I promise I'll make it up to you next time we see you. Ok?"
"Sounds like a plan to me," Pranks smiled.
Logan and Virgil walked into the living room at the same time, both of them carrying wrapped presents. Virgil tossed his to Pranks.
"This is from me and Roman," Virgil said and sat down next to his boyfriend.
"Thanks guys," Pranks started to unwrap the gift. It was a box. Then Pranks opened the box and pulled out what was inside. A new basketball and a waterbottle.
"Logan told me you play for your university," Virgil said.
"Yeah, I do. Thanks this is really nice you guys!" Pranks nodded and was examining the waterbottle. When he set it down Logan gave Pranks his gift. Pranks unwrapped it and stared for a moment before speaking, "Woah, Logan this is really cool," he looked at his older brother.
"I figured you might want to change your screen eventually," Logan said with a small smile.
"Hey, I still got it and haven't gotten tired of it yet!" Pranks said and pulled out his phone to show Logan the picture of his 6th grade graduation.
"Me too," Logan said and pulled out his phone to show his little brother.
"Thanks Logan, this is really nice," Pranks said one more time and set the canvas down carefully on the table. Then a switch flipped in him and he was back to his overly confident self, "So you didn't get me anything, Princess?" he said and grinned at Missy.
"Depends," she answered and leaned forward, "I'll give you my number if you'll give me yours," a playful smile spread across her face, "You haven't have happened to find your soulmate yet, have you?"
I felt Logan tense up next to me and Pranks grinned dropped, but he recovered quickly. "No," he said flatly, "Probably won't either," he added and pulled down the collar of his shirt to reveal his bare neck. Missy's smile vanished, "Fell off last year."
"Shit, I'm sorry. Me too," she said and pulled the chain around her neck out of her shirt to reveal that it was just a necklace with an M on it, not a soul gem, "Before I was born. Sorry again," she said quietly.
"If it makes you feel better I'll still take your number," Pranks shrugged. Missy smiled weakly and nodded. She moved from Roman's side and went to sit down next to Pranks.
I leaned over to say something to Logan, "Did your brother just find his soulmate in a day and it took us two months?" I whispered.
"Well not his soulmate," Logan pointed out.
"Doesn't matter, they could still be soulmates, even if they're not the ones the universe originally had in mind," I argued.
"Patton, you always call me smart, but you have some pretty nice thoughts yourself," he smiled at me and I felt my face heat up and I buried my face in his shoulder.
The rest of the night went off without a hitch. Missy and Pranks talked by themselves most of the time. Roman, Virgil, Logan and I all talked for a few hours with Nancy. Around 8:30 Nancy decided that they needed to head back home. Missy and Pranks didn't seem fond of leaving each other and stalled for another half hour, but did eventually have to say goodbye. We stayed up for another hour teasing Missy, which ended in her telling us to buzz off. Well, she used a stronger word than buzz. After a while Missy told Roman she'd be waiting in the car. Roman let her go and took his time saying goodbye to Virgil. After we heard the door shut Virgil looked at me and Logan.
"I don't get my boyfriend you don't get yours," he grumbled.
"It's fine, I have work to do tomorrow morning any way," I giggled.
"Do you want me to walk you to the bus stop?" Logan asked me, but I shook my head.
"I'll make it, but a good night kiss would be nice though," I smiled sweetly. It didn't take any more convincing to make Logan oblige.
"You two are disgusting," Virgil said. I pulled away and stuck my tongue out at Virgil.
"You and Roman are the same way, if not worse," Logan smirked.
"Good night you two," I said and headed towards the door. Logan got up and followed.
"Bye Patton," Virgil called.
We stopped at the door and said good night one more time, "I'll see you tomorrow. Ok?" Logan asked.
"If you would like," I chirped. Logan nodded and leaned down kissed me one more time. "Good night Logan," I kissed him on the nose and left, closing the door behind me.
Overall I'd call it a successful day. I got to meet Logan's mom and brother and both of them were wonderful. I got to spend the day with my friends and soulmate, and I got to watch Missy and Pranks be adorable. Yeah, not a bad day.
Hey guys. Honestly have no clue how good this was. I feel like it was way too long and probably boring, but I guess you have to suffer. K. Bye!
