A/N: Last chapter! :( Enjoy!

-*-*-*-*- Will -*-*-*-*-

Will sat on the steps of the Institute, staring out at the gates. How much those gates must have seen, he thought. The history that was behind them. They had seen everything from the almost end of the world to a small boy clambering through them to find the Shadowhunters that would take him in and be his new family. Will sighed, shaking his head. He had come a long way since then.

After the battle, he just had to get away. He knew that it was dangerous, considering that Mortmain was still out there probably outraged by the loss of the Black Volume and the King as an ally. But he couldn't take sitting there anymore.

The others had gone back to the Institute, but not before calling Brother Enoch to take the future Tessa's body away. If the Silent Brother was confused, he did not tell them. He only took the body and left them.

By the time Will got back to the Institute that night, he was already contemplating what he was going to do about the whole situation. As he suspected, Jem was waiting for him in his room when he had climbed the old stairs. They didn't say anything at first, only sat in each other's company. That was until Jem spoke.

"I saw Tessa," he had whispered. "She came to me after the battle. She wanted to know what happened, why everyone was so upset." He laughed a little then. "At first, she thought it was about you. But I told her you were fine. So now she's pestering me about the truth."

"You didn't tell her, did you?" Will asked Jem urgently. Jem looked up at him, the expression on in his face dazed and tired.

"No," he said. "I couldn't...bring myself to. I can bearly look at her without thinking about it. Knowing that some time in the future, that's going to be her fate."

And that's when Will knew. They couldn't keep this a secret even if they tried. It was just too painful.

It was dark now as Will looked up at the black sky, but the stars weren't out. They were being hidden by the clouds as if even they thought no light should shine upon them today. He was pretty sure it was going to rain soon. Jem would probably tell him to get inside before he caught a cold.

But Jem wasn't here.

"It's all done," a voice said behind him. Will didn't have to turn to know it was Magnus.

"It worked for everyone?" He asked listlessly. "Everyone in the Institute? Even Tessa?"

"Yes," Magnus replied. "Although I'm not quite sure why you asked me to do this."

"Because like you said, if the past know about future, the effects could be catastrophic," Will said quietly. "And well...I couldn't bear for Tessa to know what her fate will be. Even Jem couldn't handle it. I can't-" He hesitated, taking a deep breath. "I can't have Jem worrying about this. It's better if they all forget."

There was silence for a moment as the warlock seemed to contemplate the situation. He then sat down next to Will, stretching out his legs.

"You wanted to save their pain," Magnus said. "I understand that. But Will, taking someone's memory comes with a price. You should know that better than anyone."

"I do," Will said softly. "But the price of them not knowing is far less than the price they would have to pay if they did know."

"What about you?" Magnus asked. "Do you want to forget?" Will hesitated for a moment. Did he want his memories taken again? The last time that happened didn't go so well. But at least this time it was for a good reason. It was for protection rather than harm.

"Yes," he said quietly. "I do. But before you take them, can you at least tell me if you can help Jace and Kit get home? I didn't spend much time with them but I don't think the Institute can deal with more than two Herondales. Cecily and I are bad enough, but add Jace and Kit into mix? That would be disastrous. Besides, I think Jace has a love of his own he needs to get back to. A Fairchild, he told me. I suppose they are the only other family apart from the Carstairs that can keep us Herondales in check." Magnus smiled and chuckled slightly, shaking his head.

"I've already sent them home," he said. "When I returned home this afternoon, I found a letter on my table. It was from Tessa, or future Tessa to be more accurate. She explained the spell to send them back and provided me with the right ingredients. They should be safe and sound from wherever they came from now. I've also arranged for Tessa to have a proper funeral. She'll be well looked after."

"Thank you," Will said sincerely. "Not just for them, but for me too. I know I'm a burden on you and I never meant for that to happen. But I thank you for everything." Blue sparks appeared in Magnus' hand.

"No need to thank me, Will," he said. "Just don't forget who you are again." Blue sparks then filled Will's vision and all memories of the future, all memories of Future Tessa and Jace and Kit were gone.

"Will!" Will turned around and saw Jem and Tessa strolling down the corridor arm in arm. Even though it pained him to see Tessa with someone else, he was glad that it was with Jem. It was strange, to have so much pain and happiness mixed into one.

Nevertheless, he plastered a smile to his face when he saw them. "On our way to dinner, are we?" he smirked. Jem rolled his eyes.

"Yes, William," he said. "Where else would we be going?"

"Oh, I don't know," Will said, wiggling his eyebrows. Tessa scoffed, blushing slightly.

"Is it too soon to want him to be missing again?" she asked. Will raised an eyebrow.

"You wound me, Miss Gray," he deadpanned. Jem chuckled and shook his head.

"All right, you two," he said. "Come on, let's go to dinner. I think Charlotte wanted to discuss something about Mortmain's whereabouts. We might be close to catching him once and for all."

The three of them walked down the corridor together and towards the dining room. When they entered, Charlotte and Henry were already in their usual seats at the top of the table, their hands joined. Gideon was following Sophie around as ever while Gabriel and Cecily sat together in earnest conversation. Jem patted Will's shoulder before pulling out a chair for Tessa and then sitting next to her.

"Will?" Charlotte asked, raising an eyebrow. "Are you joining us?" Will smiled and nodded.

"Yes," he said, glad that normality was returning. He caught Jem's crooked smile from the table. "Yes, I am. So where are we with the Mortmain case then?"

-*-*-*-*- Jace -*-*-*-*-

When Jace opened his eyes, he found himself standing in the great hall of the New York Institute. All around him, numerous amounts of Shadowhunters dressed in gear were staring at him, their mouths wide open in shock. He spotted Maryse at the head of the main group with Alec, Isabelle and Clary at her side. They too gaped at him.

"Er...hi everyone?" he said before Clary had rushed forwards and crushed him with a hug then a fierce kiss. Isabelle came next, slapping him across the face before hugging him too. Once the girls had screamed and shouted at him as much as their lungs could, Jace turned to Alec who just stood with his arms crossed in front of him.

"You have a hell of a lot of explaining to do," Alec said. "The Clave was about to send an entire search and rescue mission after you." For once, Jace had no snarky comeback. He only smiled and embraced his parabatai in a hug.

"Awh, were you that worried?" He laughed in his ear. He knew Alec must have been surprised but Jace didn't care. He had always heard the stories from present-day Jem of his parabatai William Herondale and the bond they had shared. He just didn't realise how much they had sacrificed for each other. Now he had witnessed it first hand, it made him realise that he had been taking his own parabatai for granted.

"Um...Jace, you're crushing me," Alec stuttered. Jace released him and clapped his shoulder.

"So, are you going to tell us what the hell happened when you just disappeared into thin air?" Clary asked him. He kissed her temple.

"I will," he said. "But first I need to make a couple of phone calls."

Half an our later, he was sitting in Marsye's office with the phone in his hand after spending a good fifteen minutes on the phone with Kit. Julian had answered the phone first, saying how Clary had called Emma a few days before asking for help to search for him. At that point, Julian had told her that Kit was missing too. It took a little while but Jace explained everything before Julian finally put Kit on the phone.

Kit had been extremely excitable as he babbled on about their adventure. As soon as Jace had made sure he was okay, he said his goodbyes and told him not to get in trouble any time soon.

Now, he had the phone in his hand again as he dialled a number he never thought he would.

"Hello?" the person answered.

"Hey, Jem," Jace said. "This is Jace Herondale." There was silence for a moment.

"Jace," Jem said. "You're back."

"Yeah," he replied. "And you know from where." There was a deep sigh.

"I know," Jem said softly. "Thank you again, by the way, for helping us save Will." Jace hesitated for a moment.

"I'm sorry, you know, about Tessa," he said quietly. "I know she meant a lot to you."

"She did what she thought was right," Jem said. "She has always been stubborn. But the only thing she ever wanted was to protect her friends. When we found out the Unseelie King was changing the past, she knew she was the only one who could stop it. I couldn't have done anything to stop her."

"She was one of the bravest people I knew," Jace said sincerely. "Jem, if there is anything I can do for you, anything at all-"

"You are so like Will," Jem said, chuckling slightly. "Jace, you don't need to do anything for me. You have already given enough. But if you really want to do something, then there is one thing that you could do. For Tessa."

"Of course," Jace said, sitting up. "Name it."

"For her to be recognised by the New York Institute as a hero of Shadowhunters," Jem said. Jace smiled.

"Consider it done," he said. "And I'll talk to the Clave too. I'll get her name known by them. She'll go down in history as one of the greatest Shadowhunters ever. I promise."

"Thank you, Jace," Jem said. "From all of us." Then the line went dead.
