XXV
A/N: Hey, so my laptop decided it didn't want to work which meant the majority of this chapter was written on my phone whoopie doo. But it's been fixed! Anyways, sorry for any mistakes.
Enjoy!
-*-*-*-*- Kit -*-*-*-*-
Kit was not happy. Whatever Jace might have said, he knew that they would have needed every fighter they could get. Yes, he was barely trained but he knew how to take care of himself. He had done even before his father died. But like always, he got left behind like a child.
He kicked a loose stone as he wondered around the garden, his hands deep in his pockets. He threw himself onto a stone bench in a huff. He would have stayed there all day if it wasn't for the flash of bright white light that shot through the garden, completely blinding him. Gasping, he covered his eyes until the light was gone. When he looked, a woman stood by the tree, gazing around her in wonder.
"I can't believe it worked," she muttered. "I'm here."
"Excuse me?" Kit asked, standing up. "But who the hell are you?" The woman turned, the most deadly serious expression on her face.
"Christopher, I have no time to explain," she said urgently. "Now tell me where the others went."
"Why should I tell you?"
"Because Will's life depends on it!" It was then that Kit thought he recognised her. He thought back to the day he was rescued, the day his father died, and suddenly he knew.
"You?" he asked. "What are you doing here?"
-*-*-*-*- Will -*-*-*-*-
There they stood, the Shadowhunters on one side of the square and the fae on the other with Will in the middle of both. He could vaguely hear Charlotte ordering him to retreat but he was registering nothing. The world around him was moving in slow motion as he struggled to breathe.
"Kneel, Herondale!" The King shouted. When Will didn't move, he began screaming. "KNEEL!"
"Get out of here, Will!" Jem cried, struggling against the King's grip. "Go now!"
But Will just stood frozen, staring at the knife that the King held to Jem's throat. How many times in the last few years had Jem saved him? He had never abandoned Will, even when Will didn't want to be saved. He was always there.
And now Will had to be there for Jem.
"Let him go," Will said quietly.
"Will, don't do it-" Jem started before the King dug the knife a further centimetre into his throat, cutting his words off with a choke.
"If you want your parabatai to live, you will kneel before me and not resist as I take the life from you!" The King yelled.
"Just let my family live and I'll do whatever you want," Will said, dropping his sword to the ground with a clatter. "Please, just let them go. Don't harm them. I'm begging you."
"Just think about this, Will!" Jace suddenly shouted from the group of Shadowhunters at the back. But Will wasn't listening. He stepped towards the King and fell to his knees at his feet, his arms loosely at his sides.
"End it," he said, bowing his head. "End it now." One of the King's soldiers took Jem from him before handing out a gleaming jet black sword. Will knew it was demon metal. He also knew that once the King made his strike, there would be no coming back from this. No magic healing, no spells to save him. It would just be death.
"I've waited to do this for a long time," the King said, sharpening the sword and ignoring Jem's cries of protest. "Ever since I first captured you. Your family has brought suffering to mine for decades. It is time for the blood to be repaid."
Will didn't say anything, only waited for the moment in which his life will end. The King went behind him, pressing the sword against his throat so he could see his parabatai. He locked eyes with Jem who didn't flinch once. He only gave him a look that filled him with strength and courage.
"I want to teach you all a lesson!" the King roared. "Your precious bonds will not save you! The love you think you all share is futile! I will destroy every Shadowhunter who dares to defy me! And I will start with a demonstration of my power. Witness before you two parabatai, one about to die and the other cursed to live without him. They say the bond of parabatai is so strong, that one can feel the pain of the other. Let's put that to the test, shall we?"
The King moved back in front of Will, pulling back his weapon. "I want to see those arrogant Herondale eyes fade when I run you through," he growled.
"Will!" Jem gasped, as if unable to hold it in any long.
"Goodbye, Mr Herondale," the King grinned. This was it. This was how it was all going to end. After going through the agony of losing his memory, then finding it again, this was how William Owen Herondale was going to die. But as least it was saving the people he loved. Will closed his eyes as the sword was thrust forwards., aiming straight at his heart-
But it never reached him.
From behind his eyelids, Will saw the brilliant, white flash that exploded just in front of him. But he didn't open his eyes, not until he heard Jem's voice.
"Will?" Jem asked, his hand on his parabatai's shoulder. He grip it ever more tightly when Will did not respond to his call. "Will, please look at me!" Will slowly raised his head, his eyes dilated and watery. He felt like death itself. How did Jem escape from the fae soldier? How was he here now?
"Jem?" he whispered. "But I don't understand...I- I gave myself up. I gave myself up to save you. Why am I still here? What even happened?"
"Someone took your place," Jem said, his voice breaking slightly. Will looked up in disbelief.
"Who?" He then glanced over Jem's shoulder and gasped.
Standing in front of him was a girl. She had flowing hazel hair which fell past her shoulders. Her cheek bones were sharp and so cleverly crafted. Her eyes were the same fascinating grey that Will had fallen in love with. But what Will focussed on was the black demon metal sword that protruded from her chest.
"Tessa?" he gasped, struggling to his feet. "TESSA!" He tried to run forwards but Jem stopped him. Will looked at him, utterly confused. "Jem, what are you doing?! That's Tessa! That's your fiancé! We have to save her! We have to-"
"Will, stop!" Jem said. "It's not who you think. She's not our Tessa."
"But...?"
What is this magic?" The King asked, staring at Tessa in utter amazement. She looked up and started laughing despite the blood running from the corners of her mouth.
"Your spell had side effects, Unseelie King," she spat. "A power that rippled across time. I harnessed it and made it bring the two future Herondales here. I even made it bring me here. You see, I knew exactly where you were going to be and so I just placed myself in the middle, ready to end your game. You have failed because I stopped you!" She had fallen to her knees now, her breathing ragged.
"I have not failed!" the King screamed. Tessa - or rather future Tessa as Will was trying to understand - only grinned.
"Too late," she whispered as a column of blue sparks flew up towards the sky from the group of Shadowhunters. It collided with the red clouds, spreading out like a shield and blocking the demons from entering.
Magnus had broken the spell, Will realised. He had done it. And somehow this Tessa knew he was going to do it.
"No!" the King cried. "No, no, NO! What have you done!? What have you done!?" All around him, his soldiers were beginning to retreat, running away from the Shadowhunters as they realised that their advantage was gone. One by one they fled back to the shadows of the Unseelie lands from where they came.
The King stood standing in shock, staring at Will who was currently being held up by Jem. "You," he whispered, his voice full of rage and fury. "I will have my revenge someday. Your line will not survive my wrath!"
"That may be," Magnus said from behind Will, stepping forwards. "But that will not be for a very long time." He blasted the King will more blue sparks until he had disappeared without a trace. All that was left behind was the Black Volume which rested on the cobblestones. Magnus picked it up and handed it to an ashen Charlotte who only tucked it under her arm.
By that time, Will and Jem both rushed to Tessa who lay gasping on the ground. "I knew I would see you both again," she whispered, her gaze distant as she looked up at them.
"What have you done, Tess?" Will said softly. "Why did you send Jace and Kit? Why did you come back to the past yourself?" She only smiled, raising a hand to cup Will's cheek.
"I did it for you, William," she said. "Because the world needs Shadowhunters like you. I felt the damage that the King was doing and I couldn't ignore it, not while you were in danger. But it's okay. I have live many life times now. I do not need anymore. At least I saved someone I love." She turned her gaze to Jem, gripping his hand tightly.
"James," she said sadly. "I wish we had more time."
"I know," Jem said, choking back tears. "So do I. But at least tell me this, did I make your sacrifice worth it?" She smiled again.
"Yes," she whispered. "You taught me how to love, and everyday with you was filled with it." She suddenly coughed, blood spouting from her mouth. "Look after each other, please. Don't let each other go easily."
"We promise," Jem said, a single tear sliding down his cheek. "We promise, my love. Go now peacefully, and we shall meet again. Thank you, Tessa."
"No," she said. "Thank you. Thank you both." Tessa Grey from the future took her last breath, then she was gone.
Will reached out and gently closed her eyes, removing the sword from her chest and placing it by her side. Jem looked completely shocked, staring at Tessa's pale face as Will stood and backed away, walking into the city with the wind in his hair.
