-*-*-*-*- Will -*-*-*-*-

Will stood in Trafalgar Square with his seraph blade in hand. Nelson's column rose above him in defiance of the fiery sky that burned through the clouds. Vaguely, Will remembered telling Jem that he wanted to climb it one day. Obviously, that would have to wait until he dealt with the small problem of impending hell on Earth, but it was nice to think of the memories that he had once lost.

The Square was completely empty of pedestrians. The mundanes had been warded off by something. As much as Will hoped it was Magnus, he knew better than to think that. This had the Unseelie King's signature written all over it.

Speaking of which...

About a dozen Unseelie soldiers had suddenly appeared at the other end of the Square. They still wore their black uniform and steel masks of snarling wolves over their faces. Will wasn't sure if it was because they looked tough wearing them or if the King was trying to get inside his head...again.

The soldiers advanced on Will until they were just in front of him, their swords raised above their heads but completely still. They were waiting, Will thought. Waiting for orders.

"I have to say, I wasn't expecting to see you again," a voice from behind him chuckled. Will turned around to face the Unseelie, an eyebrow raised.

"Really?" he drawled. "And why was that? Oh, I know, because you stabbed me with a demon metal sword!" The King laughed again and shook his head.

"Oh I have to say I have missed your company, William," he said. "You were one of the most lively prisoners I had. It was a shame when I had to let you go. But, I needed to in order to complete my plan."

"You mean Mortmain's plan," Will snarled. The King's smile suddenly slipped away and his eyes filled with burning rage.

"What did you say?" he spat.

"I said it was Mortmain's plan," Will repeated himself, his voice filling with venom. "You were following his orders all along. He told you where to find me, he told you what to do with me, he told you how to break me, and then he told what to do with me afterwards. None of this was ever your plan. It was his. Admit it, Lupus! You are under his control!"

"I am the King of the Unseelie and I am not under anyone's control!" he roared. His soldiers advanced another step forwards, brandishing their demon metal swords. Then Will did the one thing he knew the King wouldn't expect.

He started laughing.

"Stop that now!" the King shouted.

"I'm sorry," Will giggled, wiping a tear from his eye. "It's just that you have no idea that every move you make is for Mortmain's benefit and not yours. Everything you've done is just helping him."

"You're lying, Mr Herondale," the King snarled.

"Oh, but I wouldn't lie to a faerie," Will said dangerously. "So how about we wrap this up now? You tell me where the book and Mortmain are, because I am assuming you gave it to him, and then we can finish what you started when you kidnapped me."

"If you think I'm stupid enough to tell you where Mortmain is, then you're wrong," the King said darkly. Will only shrugged, glancing over the King's shoulder where Jem, Jace and Cecily hid behind the fountain, ready for his signal to attack. He knew that Gideon, Gabriel, Charlotte and Henry were hiding somewhere else as Magnus prepared to break the spell.

"Fine, we'll just find him ourselves then," Will said with a smirked then launched himself at the King, feeling the Fearless Rune that Jem had drawn on him burn into his chest. The others charged at the soldiers and the sound of metal clanging against metal filled the air.

With a growl, Will swung his seraph blade, slicing at the King's head. The King blocked the strike with his own double edged sword before striking at Will's gut. He ducked the blow, rolling across the cobblestones before rising to his feet again. The King was right back on him, stabbing at him again and making Will fall backwards before he was kicked in the stomach.

Will looked up just in time for the King to stab the sword down at him-

Clang!

Suddenly, Jem stood over Will having knocked the King's sword from his hand. "Please don't kill my parabatai," he said sweetly. "You see, only I'm allowed to do that." He then launched a jump side kick, propelling the King head over heels until he crashed into the ground ten metres away.

"You're late," Will said bluntly as Jem helped him up. Jem grinned slightly, rolling his eyes at Will's antics.

"Sorry," Jem replied. "Was having a slight problem with some faeries. But hey, here I am. Still managed to save you...again."

"Woah, no need for that," Will chuckled as he pulled out a dagger and threw it at an oncoming soldier without even looking. "And I thought you were worried for my safety." Another Unseelie soldier charged at them but Cecily jumped in the way, running him through with her sword.

"Boys!" she yelled, spinning around to face them. "Would you please focus! This is no time to be showing off!"

"Don't look at me," Jem said, pointing at Will. "He started it."

"I don't care who bloody started it," Cecily snapped. "I'm finishing it! Just do your job." Then she was gone, her black hair flying behind her as she re-joined the fight. Jem turned to Will and smiled before they both whirled around to face the Unseelie King who was recovering from his fall.

"Shall we?" Will asked.

"I hate you sometimes," Jem muttered but nonetheless, charged.

-*-*-*-*- Jace -*-*-*-*-

Jace sliced at another soldier before spinning around and tripping up another, stabbing down at him. Just at the sheer size of this battle, Jace was glad that he had convinced Kit to stay at the Institute with Tessa, Sophie and the cook Bridget (who by the way was an extremely good cook). This was far to much for the kid considering he had only just found out he was a Shadowhunter.

Magnus was just in front of him, standing at the base of Nelson's column. Blue sparks flew around him as he chanted, pulling together the fabric of magic in order to break the spell. But Unseelie soldiers were running towards him, cutting him off from the others.

Running towards the warlock, Jace slid on his knees, slicing at the legs of a faerie before standing to his feet in front of Magnus.

"How long do you think you can hold them?" Magnus yelled at him, gritting his teeth together.

"Er-" Jace replied, stabbing at another soldier. "Five minutes maybe?"

"Just keep them back!" Magnus shouted. "I've almost broken the spell! I just need a few more minutes" At that point, Jace was slammed into by a huge fae warrior and crashed to the ground. He groaned, blowing a stand of hair from his face as he rose to his feet again.

"Okay, big guy," he sighed. "Let's see what you're made of."

-*-*-*-*- Will -*-*-*-*-

The more he and Jem fought, the more the sky above them began to rumble. Red thunder and lightning began to strike the buildings around them as demons were teleported from the other world. Will could hear the roaring as they were let loose on the city.

The Unseelie King was fighting with sheer rage, peppering the parabatai pair with blow after blow. His strength only seemed to be growing as the two boy's decreased. Will knew that it was the Black Volume's spell. He only hoped that Magnus was close to breaking it.

For that brief moment that Will wasn't paying attention, he suddenly found himself flying backwards before rolling across the cobblestones. The world went into slow motion as Will tried to drag himself up. He felt two strong pairs of hands grab him and haul him to his feet.

"Will!" Gideon shouted.

"Snap out of it, Herondale!" Gabriel yelled before slapping him. Will clutched his face, looking slightly shocked.

"You'll regret that later, Lightworm," he ground out.

"That doesn't matter," Gideon said. "Jace just said that Magnus has almost completed the spell. But you need to keep the King away for just a few more seconds-" He didn't finish. The faeries had suddenly stopped fighting and were rallying behind their King. The Shadowhunters gathered just in front of the column, protecting Magnus but Will didn't move. His breath was pushed from his lungs as he saw who the King was holding a knife at the throat of.

It was Jem.

"Now, Mr Herondale," the King growled. "We shall conclude our business. Kneel before me or your parabatai dies!"

"Will?" Jem asked, his hand on his parabatai's shoulder. He grip it ever more tightly when Will did not respond to his call. "Will, please look at me!" Will slowly raised his head, his eyes dilated and watery. He looked like death itself.

"Jem?" he whispered. "But I don't understand...I- I gave myself up. I gave myself up to save you. Why am I still here?"

"Someone took your place," Jem said, his voice breaking slightly. Will looked up in disbelief.
