-*-*-*-*- Will -*-*-*-*-
Before Will could stab that good for nothing, bastard Mortmain in the face, Magnus had grabbed him again, yanking him back. "Get your hands off me!" he yelled, struggling against the warlock's grip. "Let me kill him that bastard! Get off me!"
"Calm down, Will," Magnus said forcefully. "If you remember Mortmain then you'd know that he's up to something! If you kill him, then we'll never know what!"
"I don't care!" Will shouted. "He's a psychopath!"
"Such big words, Mr Herondale," Mortmain chuckled. "I see your vocabulary hasn't faded."
"I have some more choice words for you," Will spat. "You sick, son of a b-"
"I'm sorry to interrupt your extreme cussing, but I'm afraid we have very little time," Mortmain cut him off. "If you want to save Miss Gray and Mr Carstairs, as well as the other Shadowhunter's Lupus has taken, then I would advise you listen to what I have to say."
"We'll listen," Magnus said, still tightly holding Will. "But if you try anything, you may find yourself covered in glitter standing in the middle of the demon realms. Do you understand?" Mortmain laughed, shaking his head.
"If I wanted to kill you, I would have done it the moment I walked in here," he said. Nevertheless, he strolled over to the armchair and sat himself down, crossing his legs as if he was relaxing at home.
Magnus let go of Will and sat down himself. Will remained standing, his hand still gripping the dagger like it was life or death...which to be honest, it was.
"So, it has come to my attention that Miss Gray is no longer in your care at the Institute," Mortmain said. "My automatons reported to me that she was taken by someone named Lupus along with the Lightwood Brothers, Miss Herondale and, of course, your parabatai."
"If you came here to tell us what we already know, then I suggest you leave," Will snarled. Mortmain held up a hand.
"I am not quite finished yet, Mr Herondale," he said sternly. "After...speaking with Benedict Lightwood, I discovered that he had been feeding Lupus information about all of you. Everything Lupus needed to know, your hobbies, your habits, even what you had for breakfast, Benedict told him. I believe that it how they found you, Mr Herondale."
"I knew that Lightworms had something to do with this," Will muttered.
"Then why did Lupus take Gideon and Gabriel then?" Magnus asked. "If you know so much, answer that."
"Because Benedict failed his part...again," Mortmain replied. "Lupus took his sons as punishment. He was meant to draw Charlotte and Henry to his house and hold them there, but he was too worried about the Clave to do it. He is a coward, which is why he is no longer in my employment."
"Because we ratted him out," Will said, his voice cold. Mortmain smiled a thin smile.
"Yes, you did," he said carefully. "However, this does not matter. What matters is defeating Lupus."
"Do you know who he is?" Will asked. Despite getting his memories back, he still didn't know who Lupus was. The bastard was too clever for that.
"No," Mortmain said. "Do you really think I would be here if I knew that? But I do know how he got Arthur Bates' research. Bates was a friend of my parents, you see. When he was brutally murdered by Shadowhunters, my father wanted his research and spells for himself. However, when he got to Bates' home, it was all gone. I assume that Lupus has spent years trying to decode it to use it for himself." He paused, looking thoughtful. "I thought perhaps the book he wanted from Mr Herondale had something to do with Bates."
"The book has nothing to do with Bates," Will said quietly. Both Magnus and Mortmain looked up at him with quizzical looks on their faces. "I mean, at least I don't think it has anything to do with Bates."
"So you remember what it is?" Magnus said. "You remember where it is?"
"Of course I do," Will replied. "Well, at least now I do." Mortmain leant forward on his knees, suddenly looking very interested.
"Do tell, Mr Herondale," he said. Will looked to Magnus who looked suspicious.
"Only tell him what it is," the warlock said. "Not where." Will nodded.
"There are many important and powerful books in the Shadow world," he said, choosing his words carefully. "Like the Grey Book, or the Book of the White. Those are well-known by the Clave and are under lock and key. But there is one book that the Clave fears more than anything because they have no idea where it is. It is powerful enough to slaughter everyone." Magnus suddenly went pale.
"You didn't find that, did you?" he whispered. "Please don't tell me you found that book..." Will looked down.
"In a way," he said. "My father had it, although I have no idea how he acquired it. I didn't know what it was when I stole it. At the time, I was more concerned with the fact my sister had just died because of my curse. I went into his study and stole weapons and maps. When I saw the book, it looked rather precious. I thought perhaps I could sell it on the road if I needed food. But I didn't. I kept it. It was only when I arrived at the Institute and started studying like a Shadowhunter did I realise what it was...and how dangerous it could be in the wrong hands. I tried to destroy it, but it was indestructible. So I hid it, never told Charlotte or Jem, and tried to forget that it existed."
"You have The Black Volume of the Dead?" Magnus asked, his voice low. "You, a seventeen year old Shadowhunter boy, is the holder of one of the most powerful spell books in the world?"
"Incredible," Mortmain said, for once looking utterly astounded. "The things I could do with a book like that..."
"But you are not having it," Will snapped at him. "In fact, no one is."
"Oh no, I wouldn't expect you'd make it that easy for me," Mortmain chuckled.
"So, spit it out then," Magnus demanded, turning to Mortmain. "You're obviously here for a reason and most probably something that profits you. But you wouldn't come here without something to bargain. So, tell us what you want. Now."
"You know my ways too well, warlock," Mortmain chuckled. "Well, as you wish. You see, I have a certain way of tracking Miss Gray, and so when I was alerted of her disappearance, I immediately searched for her. I don't suppose you know where Lupus took you, do you, Mr Herondale?"
"No," Will said through gritted teeth. How he wished he could throttle this man right now. He closed his hands into fists, digging his nails into his skin to stop himself from doing something stupid. "And you do?" Mortmain grinned evilly.
"Of course I do," he said. "However, the entrance is sealed with magic. I cannot break in on my own. Only a warlock could...or the right person with a certain book in his possession."
"Well, we'll go with the warlock version then," Magnus said, clapping his hands and standing up. "Thank you for visiting, Mr Mortmain. Now if you give us the location of Lupus' lair, we'll rescue everyone and be on our way."
"I am not a fool, warlock," Mortmain snarled. "I want something out of this too."
"And let me guess," Will drawled. "You want Tessa."
"Precisely," he said, standing up. "I want your oath, Shadowhunter, that as soon as you have rescued your friends, you will personally deliver Miss Gray to me alive and unharmed."
"I won't do anything of the kind," Will retorted. Mortmain shrugged.
"Well then, I suppose you won't be wanting the location of the lair in order to rescue your friends," he said. "Such a shame that. They'll feel that you've abandoned them." He smiled then, showing his ugly teeth. "Tell me, Mr Herondale, when you were captured, did you feel that they abandoned you?"
"Stop it," Will growled.
"Did you feel hopeless?" Mortmain continued, walking towards Will slowly. "Did you feel desperate?"
"Shut up right now!" Will shouted, trying to block out the painful memories of the isolation he had suffered.
"You wouldn't want that to happen to your sister or Miss Gray, would you?" Mortmain said slowly. "And what about your parabatai? Hasn't the poor boy suffered enough already without you adding to his pain?"
"All right, fine!" Will yelled, throwing down his dagger. "I swear by the Angel that, when and only when everyone that Lupus has taken is safe, I..."
"Finish the oath, Herondale," Mortmain told him.
"Will, don't do it!" Magnus said, stepping forwards. But Will had to do it. There was no way out of this. He had to swear the oath to Mortmain, otherwise Jem and Tessa and everyone else would die. God, he was about to sell out the girl he loved more than his own life.
"I will personally take Tessa to you," Will finished, closing his eyes. Mortmain seemed satisfied.
"Excellent," he said. "Now, the location of Lupus' lair. It is under the Palace of Westminster. The underground tunnels provide enough space and resources for him to complete his work. I will leave you now for you to collect the book. You will then go to the lair, enter the tunnels and find your friends. Of course, my army will be waiting outside in case anything is to go wrong. But afterwards, you are to deliver Miss Gray to me."
"Yes," Magnus said, almost spitting blood.
"Good," Mortmain replied. He turned to the demon trapped in the pentagram one last time. "You may want to get rid of this. We wouldn't want any accidents now, would we?" And with that, he left, closing the door and disappearing.
Magnus and Will were silent for a moment, taking in what had just happened. "You're giving up Tessa," the warlock then said slowly. "You're giving up the love of your life?" Will looked at him, a slow grin spreading across his face.
"Did you really think that I was going to hand her over?" he said with a laugh. Magnus blinked.
"Will, you swore the oath," he said. "You can't break that."
"I swore an oath to take her to him," Will elaborated. "I never said that I was going to deliver her for him to keep. He only has to see her and the oath is complete." Magnus shook his head with a sigh.
"For a moment there, I really thought I had misjudged your character," he said, wiping the sweat off his forehead.
"Never," Will said. "Now, let's go get the book before-" He cut himself off with a gasp, clutching his chest and falling to his knees.
"Will!?" Magnus cried, rushing towards him. "Will, are you alright?" But Will wasn't alright. He was far from alright. He grabbed his shirt buttons, ripping them open.
"Oh God," he whispered. "Please, God, no."
His parabatai rune was glowing, the heat burning his skin.
