Chapter 66: Neptune's POV
Trigger Warning: Potentially disturbing imagery used/violence. (I don't think it's that bad but I figured a warning couldn't hurt :P)
"Neptune!"
I didn't even bother raising my head from the computer screen in front of me. Only a few more commands to input and then I'd begin summoning Dialga and Palkia to begin the destruction of this hateful planet and the creation of MY world.
"Neptune, what are you doing? You said we wouldn't start the plan for another week at least!" Celeste's shrill voice called from across the huge room as her short legs swiftly closed the distance from the door my mutated Bisharp destroyed earlier to my command center.
"Plans changed," I stated without emotion, not even sparing her a glance as I raced through the programming one final time to ensure everything went flawlessly.
"Neptune, look at me! Why did you tell me to capture Satoshi? What's going on?" Celeste asked through puffs of breath as she planted her hands on top of the desk next to my keyboard.
"Since when have you ever questioned your orders, Celeste?" Proteus's deep voice sneered from where he was doing final quality control testing on the red and black collars that we created with painstaking effort.
"I'm not some grunt that follows orders blindly, Proteus! I'm a captain! I have the right to know what is going on."
Practicing as much restraint and self-control as physically possible, I slowly looked away from my screen to meet Celeste's eyes. Sweat beads were dotting her forehead and she still hadn't caught her breath, which showed she must have sprinted to my side as soon as she got her orders to apprehend Satoshi. My eyes narrowed and I tried very hard to not let on the anger and disgust I felt at the look of concern that she seemed to be attempting to hide from me.
"The destruction you saw on the way here was caused by Satoshi," I explained in a measured tone but the hardness in my voice was unmistakable. "He has become a liability to the plan and needs to be contained. NOW."
Celeste flinched and I wondered if I had let my anger slip past my mask of calm. Confusion and disbelief flashed across her expressive face as she glanced over her shoulder at the wreckage of my research laboratory.
"Satoshi did that? Why? What happened?"
I typically consider myself a patient person, but today of all days I was NOT in the mood to entertain insubordination.
"That doesn't concern you, Celeste. You have your orders. Now go," I snapped forcefully before turning my focus back on my computer screen.
When I didn't hear the sound of retreating footsteps I slowly raised my head to level a cold glare at the woman before me. My lip pulled back in a snarl though when Celeste slowly folded her arms and leveled a cool gaze of defiance at me.
"If Satoshi caused damage HERE then you must have told him the plan," Celeste surmised aloud as she glanced at the destroyed door and beyond to what used to be my state-of-the-art inventions lab. "Does that mean Satoshi doesn't agree with remaking the planet?"
My fingers flinched on the keyboard and an image of Satoshi glaring hatefully at me came to my mind. A cold fury that felt as volatile as a blizzard built steadily inside me.
How dare he turn against me. My thoughts were acidic and filled me with a sense of betrayal and fury I never thought I'd experience. But as soon as the anger came to a boiling point within me, it cooled as I reminded myself of Madeleine's successful experiment.
"Satoshi has failed to see the big picture," I responded calmly as the corner of my lip quirked up in a satisfied grin. "He'll come to understand this is for the best. So go do your duty as my captain, Celeste, and capture Satoshi immediately."
My lilac eyes met her blue ones as we waged a silent battle of wills. Celeste would comply with my demands. I was the one who lifted her from the pits of despair and gave her a chance to take revenge on all of the people who wronged her and caused the death of her mother. With perfect confidence, I waited for Celeste to lower her gaze and find my perfect soldier for me.
"No."
Everything went still. One of the core bricks that made up the foundation of my psyche crumbled to dust inside me. I watched mutely as Celeste slowly took a step back from me. Her platinum blonde hair shimmered in the artificial light, looking like it was made up of strings of starlight. I'd never seen such a serene and peaceful look grace her youthful face.
"Satoshi is everything good about this crazy and broken world," Celeste declared as she met my gaze head-on. "If he's against erasing the planet and starting over... then there must be something worth saving here."
As I stared silently at Celeste, processing the ridiculous things that were spewing from her mouth, I felt something begin to seep through the chink in my inner armor that Celeste's betrayal caused. The feeling was so utterly repugnant and amorphous that I had difficulty even identifying what emotion it was. But even if I couldn't pin down exactly what was flooding within me, I did know exactly how to make it go away.
"Neptune, why don't we just calm down and talk things through together? There must be a way for us to make a better world without having to kill innocent pokemon and people. Satoshi..."
With practiced ease, I rose from my seat and threw a pokeball at Celeste's chest. Her traitorous words were cut off by the unexpected projectile. Before she could even rub her chest where my pokeball hit her, my Bisharp appeared and immediately sliced through her thin neck. I watched as her eyes widened a fraction before her body crumpled to the ground along with a wet thump from her severed head.
"Celeste!"
My head whipped towards the gaping hole that used to be where the door to this chamber was to see Satoshi dashing towards us. Hot and all-consuming rage washed through me as I watched my perfect soldier dashing toward the lifeless body of the woman I'd trusted more than anyone else in this world. How dare she covet what was mine. How dare she change her mind at this pivotal moment when I needed her to be on my side. And how dare my perfect soldier mourn for her worthless death right in front of me.
"Proteus," I barked while keeping my eyes firmly fixed on the handsome face of the man who should have been... who eventually WOULD be my perfect soldier. "Apprehend Major Killian, now. Do not kill him."
Proteus scoffed, obviously annoyed, but he left his station immediately and walked through the pool of blood spreading beneath Bisharp's feet. I didn't react as Proteus delivered a swift kick to Celeste's lifeless body, but my inner turmoil cooled into an icy determination when I saw disgust flash across my perfect soldier's face. Not trusting my emotions to remain manageable if I continued to watch, I forced myself to turn away from him and refocus on the program that would activate the Adamant and Lustrous orbs to call Dialga and Palkia to this chamber.
"This world is not worth saving," I intoned dispassionately as I opened the cages that kept my cloned Lake Guardians in place. Sounds of battle filtered through my ears but I didn't bother to look away from the screen as I went through the final safety checks.
Suddenly a presence came up behind me and I heard Bisharp grunt after taking some kind of attack, but he stayed resolutely in front of me. Growling under my breath, I glanced over my shoulder to see who dared to interrupt me at this crucial moment.
My eyes widened when I recognized the honey-blonde hair and pretty face of the girl Satoshi had claimed was his cousin. The girl's classic beauty was not lost to me but I sneered cruelly when I noticed how her knees were quivering. Although she looked fragile enough to be blown away by a gust of air, the Absol next to her was baring its fangs with a clear intent to destroy anyone who came close to her.
"Get rid of them, Bisharp," I ordered angrily as I turned my attention back to my computer screen.
Suddenly a flare of heat washed over me and I quickly spun around as Bisharp let out a howl of pain. I gritted my teeth in frustration as I witnessed a resplendent Rapidash with a flaming mane watching calmly as my Bisharp tried to power through the remaining flame of its Fire Blast attack. I could feel my roiling emotions thrashing and wailing inside of me as I fought to maintain my composure.
Every time, I seethed inwardly as I glared at the ridiculous woman in front of me who was somehow keeping my genetically modified Bisharp at bay with her Rapidash and Asbol. Every time I find a bit of happiness someone comes along to take it away. But no more. Not this time.
I punched in the command sequence that would start summoning the legendary Pokemon of space and time. Turning around, I reached for my belt and selected a pokeball that I hadn't had an occasion to use for quite some time. Looking at this vapid blonde who thought she could take my perfect soldier's attention away from me though, a cruel smile spread over my lips.
"I have no intention of allowing a trollop like you to exist in my perfect world," I announced as I confidently tossed the pokeball in my hand up in the air.
A low-pitched whirring sound was beginning to pick up volume, cutting through the sounds of Satoshi and Proteus doing battle. Without turning around, I knew that a swirling portal could be seen that would grow and eventually expel the legendary pokemon I was waiting for. It would take a few minutes for the portal to be complete though, and I relished the opportunity I'd been given to remove another thorn in my side before I started remaking this cruel and twisted world.
I didn't even bother looking at Bisharp who was pathetically struggling to resist both the heat of Rapidash's super-effective fire attacks and Absol's physical attacks as he bit and swiped at my prized pokemon and kept him from advancing toward my prey. Instead, my eyes were trained on the growing shape of one of my proudest genetic mutation successes.
One of the pokemon I'd always thought didn't live up to its potential was the dark/dragon type Hydreigon. It took me months of experimentation and trials, but finally, I succeeded in bringing out its latent might. Towering at an intimidating seven feet tall, the once pathetic and diminutive second and third heads were now full-sized with teeth as sharp as razors and eyes that burned a cruel blue color. Its papery wings had been discarded to trade for four solid feet, but its levitate ability still allowed it to maneuver through the air with ease. And the purple accents on its body had been changed for a gossamer yellow.
All in all, my creation was bigger, stronger, faster, and many times more intimidating than the original Hydreigon. Hence I renamed it Trisus and I grinned cruelly as I saw Satoshi's little friend's blue eyes fill with shock and fear.
"Kill her," I ordered Trisus firmly, not caring that the girl's Absol had left my battered Bisharp to stand resolutely in front of its trainer. "You should not have followed me here," I sneered mirthfully as Trisus opened all three of its mouths and began charging a devastating Hyper Beam attack.
The floor beneath me trembled and a deep, echoing roar sounded from behind me. Although not many things could have distracted me from watching the demise of the hussy that Satoshi had hugged so tenderly, elation coursed through me at the sound. I turned around to take in the sight of Dialga and Palkia, mighty creation pokemon that had allegedly followed Arceus's command to create this world with their powers over time and space.
A thrill went through my entire body as my cloned Lake Guardians immediately set to work, using their psychic powers to fasten the red collars around the legendary pokemons necks. I grinned widely when the collars clasped into place and immediately the legendary pokemon stilled. Unlike Cyrus who was foolish enough to believe his will would be enough to dominate a legendary pokemon's mind, I had perfected the red chains and wound in both complex programming and psychosis pokemon powers so that once the red chains were in place any pokemon, even ones as powerful as the legendary creation pokemon, would be thoroughly have their will repressed and be under my complete control.
As the light in the legendary pokemons' eyes dimmed I couldn't help but let out a laugh filled with triumph and delight. I dashed to my computer screen and eagerly inputted the command to summon Giratina next.
Feeling a rush of elation go through me, I turned back anticipating seeing the woman who dared to lust after my Satoshi be vaporized by Trisus's triple Hyper Beam. Goosebumps of anticipation traveled up my arms as I saw the girl's Absol and Rapidash desperately sending attacks at my Trisus. Its skin was thicker than a Snorlax's though and its Hyper Beam continued to charge into a massive ball of light floating directly above the middle head.
A slightly hysterical laugh escaped me when the girl's Absol began tugging at its trainer's sleeve in an attempt to run from the impending attack. Heeding her pokemon's prompting she boosted herself gracefully onto the back of her Rapidash and streaked to the left. Unfortunately for her, she had moved before the beam of destructive power was released so Trisus swiveled its heads effortlessly before releasing the attack at her fleeing back.
Just as I was about to release a crow of triumph though, a shimmering blue four-pointed star that seemed to be made of water zoomed into the line of fire. My mouth dropped open in complete shock when the gigantic star hovered in the air and somehow managed to stop my perfect Trisus' Hyper Beam in its track. Light refracted off of the strange star and suddenly the thick column of light that was Trisus's attack divided into dozens of small beams that shot off in every direction other than its intended collision course with my enemy.
"No!" I screamed in frustration moments before a roar even louder and somehow fouler than what Dilaga and Palkia had released echoed through the gigantic cavern we were in. Giratina had arrived, but I couldn't take my eyes away from the sight of that floozy who'd dismounted from her Rapidash and was looking at the remnants of the blue star that saved her life with stupid wonder.
Trisus let out a rumbling growl at the failure of their move to connect and my teeth gritted together so harshly my jaw ached. I opened my mouth to order Trisus to use a different move, one that didn't require charging time, when movement registered on the perimeters of my vision. I narrowed my eyes and turned slightly just in time to see a blue pokemon flip through the air and land directly in front of the woman I desperately wanted to kill. As it stood I noticed that a smaller version of the blue star that had saved my prey was stuck to its back, its blue skin looked slippery and what appeared to be an elongated tongue was wrapped around its neck like a scarf.
"Grenin."
My hands clenched into fists, causing my fingernails to bite into the soft flesh of my palms as I leveled a glare at the Greninja that had black ears and a red streak going down its forehead. I wasn't sure why, but the more I looked at it the more it reminded me of Satoshi with his spiky black hair and fierce, determined expression.
"You think you can stop me?" I asked although I doubted with the noise that Giratina was making behind me that they could hear me. "No one can stop me. Not you. Not Satoshi. Not Looker. Not Cyrus. Not even Arceus! This world will be rewritten! Everything will be as I dictate! Resistance is futile."
The strange greninja regarded me with what I could only describe as disdain. Seeing that look on a pokemon that reminded me of my perfect soldier snapped the very last string that had been keeping all of my emotions under control.
"Enough. Die. Just die already!"
A/N Hello everyone!! First of all, I'm sorry, this is shorter than I had intended to make my comeback chapter. However, my husband and I are leaving for a two-week vacation in Japan tomorrow, and I have been so focused on trip prep that this took a bit of a backseat. Sorry! Once we're back, I'm going to do my best to pound out more chapters and finally finish this story, though. Thank you all for your patience! Oh, and if any of you are lost because it's been so long since I updated, I created a story summary a few chapters ago so feel free to read that if you need to have a refresher about the story plot :P
