6: A World of Evil and Liz and Patty
I started walking around with this world's version of my friends. (Okay from now on I'm only going to say 'this worlds' or 'my worlds' if I'm in a conversation that involves both worlds. If not, just assume that since I'm in this world that I'm talking about this worlds version.) It wasn't hard to see how overcome by bad people this place was. Every direction I looked, something bad was going on, and I was questioning why my friends weren't stopping it.
"So, when you guys see all this bad stuff going on, why don't you try to stop it?" I asked, and the three of them turned around.
"Because none of us are really strong enough to help." Black Star said, and I just stared at him and blinked, wandering if I just heard him right. Wandering if I just heard Black Star, of all people, call himself, and our friends, weak.
"Stop looking at me like that." Black Star said. "It's weird."
"Sorry, it's just that the you I know from my world would never say anything about not being strong enough to help someone." I explained. "So just hearing those words come from your mouth was kind of shocking to me."
"Well, get used to it. I'm not the Black Star you're used to, I'm a different person, just like you're a different person from the Kid here." Black Star said. "I may look exactly the same, and have similar experiences, but that doesn't mean I act the same as the Black Star you know. I know when a fight is useless, and practically any fight with a bad guy here is useless. The worlds so overrun with kishin that it's impossible to get rid of every kishin. And it doesn't help that since the you from here turned on us, the DWMA has been becoming a lot less popular."
"Seriously?" I asked.
"Yeah. There's maybe 100 weapons and meisters there, and I would bet most of them want to leave." Maka said. "Most of the students looked to you as an example, Kid, so when you turned against the DWMA, so did a lot of the other students. It wasn't always this bad in terms of the number of bad people in the world, not until the you from here turned on us."
"Yeah. Anyways, some of the people that had turned against the DWMA were level two, even a few level three meisters, and even a few death scythes. It's hard to tell which ones are which, and I don't think loosing another life that's innocent is worth the risk." Black Star said. "It's not that none of us want to stop it. It's that if we were to be killed in the process, who knows what would happen. There's not that many good people left to fight back against bad guys."
"We can fix it though." I said. "We just have to-"
"Oh shut your face!" Black Star yelled, getting closer to my face. "I don't what it's like in your world, but it's not as simple as 'we just have to try' or 'we just can't give up.' If you'd been here as long as we have, you would know it's pointless trying to fight. The world's being overrun by kishin, and last time we fought back it cost us Soul's life! We're not about to just jump into more fights when it could cost more lives! If we didn't give up, or if we tried, it'd be pointless! We'd all just die in the end!"
"But don't we all die in the end, anyways?" I said. "I'd rather die fighting for what I believe in than die knowing I didn't try at all. Even though the chances of things going your way are little to none, its better to fight for it than to watch the world decay in chaos."
"What are you trying to do? Lift my spirits to get me fight?" Black Star asked. "Sorry, but any chance of that happening is gone. I know either way, I'm not going to die being useful."
"Don't talk like that!" I said. "Look, I get that the odds aren't in your favor. It's not an equal battle, but maybe-"
"Kid, just stop!" Black Star said. "I'm done with this crap. I don't think it's worth getting myself killed to..." he trailed off in the middle of the sentence.
"To what?" I asked.
"Nevermind." Black Star said quickly, and I couldn't tell if I was seeing things or not, but Black Star's face seemed to turn slightly pink. After he said that, he turned back around and sped up his pace, but when I tried to catch up, Maka pulled me back a bit.
"Don't take the way he treats you personally." Maka said quietly, trying to not let Black Star hear. "When the you he knew betrayed us, he was probably the one who felt the most betrayed out of all of us. He's been embarassed about it ever since, but before that-"
"Don't you dare finish that sentence, Maka." Black Star said, even though he seemed too far away for him to hear us.
"He was in love with this world's version of you." Maka whispered twice as quiet as before.
"Wait he's-" I started quietly, and Maka cut me off with a nod. "Oh... So that's why he won't fight?" I asked, and she nodded again.
"He hasn't completely gotten over it yet, that much is obvious." Maka whispered. "I honestly sometimes worry that he never will get over the fact that the guy he fell for turned this place to a world full of evil, hate and betrayal. Fighting against that is what brought us all together in the first place."
"Do you know why I betrayed you guys in the first place?" I asked.
"I guess it was less of a betrayal than we've been making it sound, but when we were fighting Asura, I could tell that somehow he combined a part of his soul with yours. That's really all that happened." Maka said. "But after that, Asura practically had complete control over you. Your dad tried to do this weird soul seperation thing, and it worked, but by then your soul was corrupted. At this point, trying to save you is a lost cause."
After that, we walked in silence for a while, until I asked something else. "Do you know why Black Star is in love with this worlds version of me in here? In my world, he's in love with Tsubaki."
"I wouldn't know. To be honest, this world's version of you doesn't even go that way. Before your/his soul was corrupted, you had actually asked me out, like five times. Though, I never said yes." Maka told me. "Though, if I had to guess why everyone's interests are different from your world, I'd have to say it might be because of what we've all experienced. From what you told us about your world, your experiences are completely different, which makes you a completely different person entirely, and the same goes with everyone else. Your dad seems a bit off from the version here. Honestly, when he found out you had secrets in this world, he was more understanding, considering what you told us about when he found out you liked Soul. He wouldn't have yelled like that if you were gay in this world. It may have been that he was more protective of you in your world than he was in this world. Either way he was protective, but on different levels and they have completely different personalities."
"That's a pretty complicated way to explain it, but I do understand what you mean." I said. "It would explain a lot, too. And I asked you out? Five times?"
"Yeah." Maka shrugged. "Though to be honest, I probably would have said yes if I didn't know how Black Star felt about you. Not that I really had feelings that strong about you. I was curious to see how far we could have gotten together, though."
"Well, we dated in my world before I realized I was gay. We made it for like two weeks." I chuckled. "To be honest it was one of the most awkward experiences of my life, but since there's the whole 'different experiences leading to different personalities' thing, it could have lasted a lot longer here."
"It's too late to know now." Maka said. "Though sometimes I wander what would have happened if maybe I just said yes. I wander if the outcome would have been different. If maybe part of the reason that he turned evil was because I hurt the you I knew too many times from rejecting him..."
"Stop thinking like that, you aren't to blame at all." I said.
Before I even realized it, I didn't even see Black Star ahead of us anymore, and I heard a familiar female voice behind me.
"Looks like we found a snobby rich kid to take money from!" I heard the voice say, and I turned around to see the two girls I had gotten to know as my weapons.
"Liz? Patty" I said, wandering what she was doing here. I thought the two of them would be with the me from this world, but I guess they weren't.
"How the hell do you know our names?" Liz looked at me suspiciously.
"That's a really, really long story." I said.
"Kid, we need to get out of here!" Maka said, tugging my sleeve.
"Whoah, Kid? Like, Death the Kid? That guy who got his soul corrupted by his brother?" Patty asked with wide eyes. "I've wanted to meet you since like, forver!"
"Uhhh... technically yes, and no about who I am..." I said. I guess in this world I had a different weapon. "I am Death the Kid, but the no part is a lot harder to explain."
"So your like, rich, right?" Liz asked.
"Uhhhh.... I don't have any money on me..." I said. "So if you just interested in mugging me, then just leave. But, if you would help me with something, I'll find a way to get you some money, and you could tag along with us for a while."
"Kid what are you-" Maka started.
"Just relax." I said simply, then leaned to whisper into her ear. "For one, they aren't kishin, so it's not like their a lost cause on becoming good. Plus, using those two as my weapons would increase my chances in a fight against the version of me in this world, since their also my weapons in my world."
"We'll definitely go with that!" Patty said happily.
"Okay then." I told them. "Time to get started."
