First Picture
"Hey kiddo come here!" Vi called Lilith over with a smile, watching as the 6-year-old came into the living room with Jinx trailing behind her as she expected.
"Yes?" She asked and the woman only patted the spot on the couch next to her. At this point, Lilith never really fussed about being around them anymore, and lately, she even seemed to want to spend time with Vi and Caitlyn and the two women couldn't have felt more proud.
When Lilith sat down Jinx went behind the couch and just leaned on the back of it to see over their shoulders at whatever Vi had to show her daughter. The older sister smiled at the lack of sarcasm since they both came into the room and pulled out her phone.
"I wanted to show you both the picture I took at the amusement park, I think it's a really good one!"
"I agree," Caitlyn added from right next to her with a grin and they both watched as Jinx rolled her eyes with a chuckle, and they expected the same reaction from their daughter but to their surprise, she only furrowed her eyebrows and looked at them confused.
"What's a picture?" She asked slowly and the three of them blinked at her a few times before Caitlyn spoke up.
"Well, a picture is kinda like a really good drawing that shows a moment that you want to remember for a very long time. But it's instant and it doesn't take any time to see it afterward." The explanation seemed to be enough for their daughter who just nodded and then looked back at Vi expectantly.
Vi had a small smile as she pulled the picture up on her phone and then passed it to Lilith. It was the moment at the food stand right after Caitlyn had kissed Vi's cheek and Lilith had pretended to be sick, so of course Jinx had decided to bring her daughter into her arms and attack her with kisses and light tickles. Cait was looking over at the two of them with a laugh clear on her face and Vi was grinning up at the camera as she took the picture.
Lilith's eyes go wide as she looks at the picture. She looks between it and each of her family members with the same shocked expression. None of them knew what was going through her little head but when they saw her bottom lip quiver it quickly sent them into panic mode.
"Lili-"
"We look really happy." She starts slowly, and one by one, each of the adults gradually un-tense themselves and let the girl continue. "L-like a real family. I love it so much." Her little voice cracked at the last second and Jinx didn't hesitate to go around the couch and pick her daughter up to sit on her lap and pull her into a hug. Lilith quickly burrowed herself into her mama's arms and Jinx looked at the other two with a soft look. Vi smiled while Caitlyn felt herself swallow quickly but she didn't give herself a moment to overthink it as they both joined the hug easily.
The 6-year-old only lasted a few seconds before she started crying lightly. Nobody else said anything as she cried but they all held her and gave comforting back rubs and pats. Eventually, they started to pull away and Lilith was left sitting on Jinx's lap and gave a few small sniffles.
"Thank you for taking me in, mama." Jinx opened her mouth but felt her chest squeeze and so she took her daughter's hand and held it tightly and looked at the girl with all the affection she could muster up.
"Of course my little rogue." Lilith laid her head on her mother's chest so she was facing the other two women.
"Thank you for adopting me." Caitlyn's eyes teared up a bit but she quickly wiped them as Vi cleared her throat to keep her voice from cracking as she responded.
"Of course kiddo."
"Yes, of course, we love you."
Jinx felt herself stiffen for a moment, as she looked at Caitlyn in surprise, none of them had exactly used the word before. Obviously, she loved her daughter but she never wanted to pressure her into feeling like she had to respond. But then Lilith pulled away slightly from her and nodded.
"I love you too." Vi and Cait stared at her in awe and this time when Caitlyn felt her tears she didn't wipe them, they were just streaking down her face. Vi looked as if she had a bunch of emotions welling up but she didn't want to overwhelm their daughter so she just covered her face with both hands. At that, their daughter turned back to Jinx who was looking at her with a slack jaw but she didn't care and wrapped her arms around the woman's neck to bury her face in her neck.
"I love you so much mama."
Is this what dying felt like? Hearing those words from her daughter filled her with so many feelings that she didn't know how to contain. Growing up emotionally stunted didn't prepare her for this warmth and care and she wasn't sure what she should do, or how she should react. Her throat grew tight as she pulled her daughter as close as possible in a hug.
"I love you too." It came out as a bit of a croak because of how tight her throat felt but she made sure to get the words out either way. They stayed like that, each of them enjoying the comfort of just being together and while the three adults looked a wreck they all were practically glowing.
Eventually, Jinx stood up with her daughter in her arms hanging there loosely. "I'm gonna go put her to bed." After they bith gave a nod the couple started whispering among themselves as Jinx headed upstairs to her kid's room. She slowly pushed the door open and walked over to her bed, gently placing Lilith under the covers and carefully tucking her in (which was easy since she never made her bed anyway, despite Caitlyn's scoldings. She couldn't be more proud of that fact.) Before pulling away completely she leaned down to press a soft kiss to her forehead and she couldn't help but watch her for a few seconds.
A small memory of Vi doing the same to her when they were kids came to mind. A different time that felt like it was forever ago, it felt like it happened to a different person, someone who wasn't her, but it was. That was something she was slowly coming to terms with as she allowed herself to get close to Vi again, and accidentally started to tolerate Caitlyn more than she originally wanted to. That Powder was still her, that she wasn't unlovable, that there are people in her life who genuinely care and want the best for her despite everything she had done and how she pushed people away and hurt them. And even that accepting help didn't make her weak. Sometimes it's necessary... and looking down at her daughter, the one who kickstarted all of these thoughts and feelings, she couldn't help but feel grateful for the help she got. Lilith was happy and loved. And she wasn't just settling or just accepting everything happening around her anymore which Jinx can honestly understand now the difference.
When they lived in her apartment Lilith was content with almost anything Jinx did or said. She rarely fussed or asked for anything, but it's not like Jinx could've given her much by herself in the first place. But since moving in with Caitlyn and Vi that changed. She complained and was fussy, she made it clear when she didn't like something happening to or around her, and she even felt okay asking for things she wanted in general which was the biggest change. Jinx tried to help her do that when they were together but she could count on her hands how many times Lilith actually asked for something. And most of those things were food related. But Vi and Caitlyn were able to show her that she could ask for things and encouraged her to do so so easily. Jinx had at first felt jealous and insecure about it, but it was a sign of Lilith growing so she couldn't stay mad for long.
Jinx let out a soft sigh and tapped her daughter's nose lightly, "boop." Which led to her lightly chuckling as she finally left the room. She knew this was probably only going to be a short nap because it was still way too early in the day for the 6-year-old to go to bed, but she understood that all those emotions definitely tuckered the kid out.
As she traveled back downstairs she saw the couple still talking and walked back over. "What's up?" She asked simply.
"We were thinking of printing out the photo for Lilith." Vi easily told her and Jinx lit up at that, her eyes wandering to the phone as a smile took over her face.
"She would love that." The other two nodded in agreement before Caitlyn added, "And I was thinking if we printed out multiple then we could all have one as well."
Jinx rocked back and forth on the balls of her feet happily and this time she nodded in agreement. "Absolutely, though there's no way I don't get at least 10 copies."
She said it as a fact and both of them rolled their eyes knowing Jinx was telling them to make sure she got at least 10 copies because she wasn't going to print it out or offer to pay. After a second Vi chuckled and finally put her phone away. "Sure why not."
