Chapter 6

Rose's knuckles were turning white from the death grip she had on the steering wheel. Still angry from last night's episode with Edwardus. Her mother giving her a light scolding didn't help either.

Darn judgmental, infuriating, self centered jerk.

She took a sharp turn at a corner just as the traffic light changed to yellow. She felt way too heated to sit at a traffic light and wait.

Who the heck does he think he is? Its no business of his what goes on with me and my family. Even if he is right, I'm sure as heck not going to tell him that though.

She swallowed a curse when she got to the end of the street and the traffic light suddey turned red causing her to slam her foot on the break.

Great just great I'm ready half an hour late for work because I over slept.

"Come on, come on, come on" she grumbled as she tapped the dashboard with each word she spoke.

As she sat there her mind wondered back to the incident in the kitchen last night. Deep down she knew he was right she had brushed off her family's words. She didn't mean it to come of as if she didn't care but apparently that's what happened. She had gotten so use to her family fussing over her sometimes she failed to see it was because they care.

She knows she's been over doing it at work. Most evenings she got home she only had time to put Emma to bed before clasping in her own bed not having the strength to even change out I'd her uniform. Then she she had to get up the next day and do it all over again. No wonder her family is always so worried.

Doesnts give him to stick his nose in our business though.

In the back of her mind something was screaming at her telling her she was only this upset because she knows he's right. That same voice was telling her she always didn't want him to think bad about her.

Yeah right. Why would I care if he likes me or not. Its not like his opinion matter. I just met the man.

A blaring car horn came from behind her telling her the light had changed to green. She quickly drove off and in no time pulled into the parking lot at work.

She grabbed her coat and bag from the passenger seat then hurried inside. Her heart constricted in her chest when she saw how crowded the waiting room was.

Are all the kids in town sick or something?

"Rose good you're here. I was beginning to think I might have to send someone to drag you out of bed" said Natalie the secretary.

"Sorry. I overslept"

"Well good because you're going to need those extra few minutes of sleep you got"

"So I see. Well alright I'm here now. Send the first patient in"

Rose walked into her office and just as she got done washing her hands her first patient walked in. Little Peggy and her mom. She invited the mom to sit with her daughter on the examination table so she could inspect the child.

"She keeps complaining about swallowing" the mom informed her.

Rose quickly pulled on a gloves and took a tongue depressors and inserted it into Peggy's mouth as she used a small flashlight to see.

"Hmm" Rose murmured

She immediately did a swab test based on what she saw.

"From what I'm seeing here its safe to say she's developing strep throat. Its still in the early stages so we can threat her before it gets worse. Liquid for three days, nothing solid, I'll prescribe some intibiotics as well and pain killers. She should be good as new in about three days after she starts her medication. Be sure she finishes the full dosage. I'd like her to cone back in a week for a routine checkup"

"Thank you so much!"

Rose waved as they left and welcomed her next patient. A toddler with a rash on his back. And so her day went on and on. One patient came in as soon as the other left. She even worked through lunch when she realized she still had a lot of children to see.

It was about four I'm the evening when she finally got a chance to rush to the canteen to get something to eat. As soon as she joined the lunch line she sneezed twice in a row and a third was fighting its way out. A few workers turned to give her suspicious looks.

When it was her turn to pay she reached out to hand the cashier her money and a sneeze escaped causing the woman to step away. Rose quickly held on to her tray when the contents on it rattled because of the force if her sneeze.

"Seems you're coming down with something" the woman said as she handed her her change.

"God I hope not"

She thank the woman and went to sit by a empty table not wanting to sit with anyone else and possibly sneeze all over their food.

She opened her water and took a sip and felt a slight ache in her throat. She groaned when she picked up on the sure signs of the flu.

I never get sick. I can't afford to.

She managed to get through the rest of the day but barely. After seeing her last patient for the day she waved goodnight to Natalie and climb into her car and drove home. From the way she was feeling she was glad she didn't have to go all the way to her parents to get Emma because the neighbor had picked her up from school. Georgia is a single mom of two children. The girl was the same age as Emma. Whenever Georgia had the day off she would take Emma for the day until Rose got off work.

"Mom what's for dinner?" Asked Emma as they walked into the house.

Rose groaned. "Oh honey, will pizza be alright tonight? I don't have the energy to cook tonight"

"Yes! Pizza! Awesome!"

"Not so loud sweetheart"

"Sorry mom. Pizza is life!"

Rose shook her head as Emma ran out of the kitchen, she reached for the phone and called to order a pizza. While they waited she sat with Emma watching K.C undercover in the living room. She kept knoddong in and out as she fought to stay awake. A few minutes later she heard a knock and grabbed her wallet and dragged herself to the door. When she opened the door she was surprised to see Edwardus standing there. She glanced around him and saw the pizza guy walking away.

"Hey!"

As she lift her hand up to wave him back she swayed on her feet and was surprised when Edwardus reached out to steady her on her feet.

"Are you alright?"

"Yes"

She tried to stand up straight but swayed again causing him to mutter some words she didn't understand as he reach out and held her again.

"Hi Edward" she heard Emma say.

She watched as he smiled at her daughter and handed her the box of pizza she didn't realize he was holding.

"You paid for my pizza?"

She winced at how feeble her voice sounded.

"Are you ill?"

"I'm fine"

"You're clearly not"

"Why are you so nosey?"

"Why are you so stubborn?"

She tried to glare at him but that only worsened her headache. She reached up to put her hand to her head and yelled in shock when she felt herself being lifted off the ground and held against a broad muscled chest.

"Down" she ordered

"pertinax mulier"

"I don't speak ..."

"Hush!"

Her mouth fell open in shock at his order. All she did was grumble as he gently placed her on the couch then came back a few minutes later with a glass of water and some pills. After taking them it was impossible to fight her sleep any longer.
