Chapter 12
Three days had passed since Rose last saw Edward and she couldn't seem to get him or what he said off her mind. She didn't realize how much she enjoyed his company until the second day passed and she found all she wanted to do was sit outside and talk to him nonstop, even if she was only talking about herself.
Don't fall for me Rose. His words plates in her head over and over.
She reached for a tub of mayonnaise and put it in the cart that she was pushing around as age helped her mother to shop for their barbeque.
The weather was perfect for a barbeque, not too hot and not too cool.
"I think we have everything we need dear don't you?" Asked Martha
"Yes mom"
"OK well let's go check out and go get started. I'm sure the kids will be driving the men crazy by now complaining that they're hungry"
Rose smiled and shook her head and turned the cart in the direction of the checkout counter. Just as they got to the line she ran her cart into someone else's that was also about to join the line.
"I'm so sorry"
"Entirely my fault"
At the sound of his voice Rose looked up at his face.
"Rose"
"Edward"
Why do I sound so winded, so embarrassing.
"Edward I'm surprised to see you here. You didn't tell me you needed anything" said Martha
"Oh hello ma'am. I didn't want to have you go out of your way just to come pick me up some vegetables and tub of chocolate ice cream"
"Oh I see. That's very considerate of you"
"I appreciate your concern ma'am. Thank you"
"Say Edward, we're having a barbeque at my house today. You'll stop by won't you?"
Rose quickly looked at her mother but stayed quiet.
"That sounds like fun, I'll be there. Do you want me to carry anything?" Asked Edward
"Just your empty stomach. About three o'clock should be good"
Edward chuckled. "I can do that. Thank you for inviting me"
"See you later dear"
Rose held her head down but she could feel his stare when he finish checking out his items them walked away.
"What was that about?" Asked Martha
"What do you mean?"
"You suddenly loosing the ability to speak as soon as Edward was standing here"
"Its not like that mom"
"Is something going on between the two of you?"
"No mom he doesn't think of me that way"
"Hmm"
Rose turned to look at her mother then.
"What does that mean?"
"Nothing dear. Let's go get this barbeque started"
Rose followed her out to the car and loaded their grocery into the back. The ride home was quiet but inside her head her thoughts were screaming at her, all thoughts of Edward.
She found herself watching the clock and getting nervous the closer it go to three. She knew spending more time with him would only heighten the feelings she has started to feel so she was determined avoid him at all cost.
She dashed into the kitchen as soon as she saw his car coming down the road onto her family's farm. She started busying herself with any little thing she could find around the kitchen to do. The slamming of a car door had her own heart slamming against her chest. She suddenly found herself gulping hard.
I can't do this today I just can't.
The sounds of footsteps thudding against the ground kept coming closer. Her back was turned to the door but she knew exactly when she was no longer alone in the kitchen and she knew exactly who joined her.
The moment of silence caused her to feel even more nervous and she hates the feeling.
"Your mother requests for you to join her outside. She needs some help tending to the children and their food"
"I'll be right there"
When she didn't hear him walking away she held her breath, wondering why he still stood there. As soon as she hear him coming closer to her she dashed around the other side of the kitchen and rushed outside to help her mother. When he came outside soon after she glanced at him to find him looking right at her with narrowed eyes. She looked away but not before she caught the frown that crossed his face.
For the whole day she did her best to avoid him though it wasn't that easy in a setting like this. If she wasn't seeing him she was hearing him. Throughout the day she caught him playing with Emma who was basically following him around like a devoted puppy dog.
As soon as her brothers and her father decided to teach Edward how to play football that's when she sat down for the first time. She groaned as she sank onto the porch swing next to her mother. She lifted one of her feet and started massaging her heel.
"Well no wonder they're hurting. You've been running around here all day hiding from that man if he gets too close to you" she hears her mother say.
"I haven't been running away from him"
"Haven't you?"
"Its, mom...its for the best OK?"
"Best for who? Because from the look on both of your faces neither of you are enjoying this distance"
Right on cue Rose looked over at Edward and found him glancing away from her as he tried to focus on the game at hand.
Long after her brothers and their families left Rose still sat outside on the porch staring blankly into the night. She felt rather than heard Edward come out to the porch. She could feel his gaze on her like gentle fingers along her skin.
"You've been avoiding me?" She heard him say as he sat right down beside her.
"Isn't that what you want?" She replied not bothering to deny it.
"No, its definitely not. However its for the best"
She scoffed and turned to look at him. She was beyond frustrated.
"What does that even mean?" She asked. Frustration oozing from her voice.
"It means ..."
"Well?"
"Nothing"
She pushed herself off the swing and walked over to the end of the porch. He didn't follow her right away and she was glad for that because she needed a moment to herself.
"This is for the best" he repeated
"Best for who? I get why I would be afraid to get involved with you but why are you so set on keeping me at a distance!?"
He was obviously startled at her heartfelt tone but she was too worked up to stop now.
"Its not like I'm telling you I'm in love with you Edward because I'm not but I do feel something" she point to her chest.
"Rose don't"
"Don't what don't feel? Please tell me how you do that because I don't know how. Since the first day I saw you I knew it was going to happen no matter how I fought it. Now here I am once again feeling something for anorhwr man who's set on running away from me again"
"I'm not running away from you!"
"Yes you are!"
"OK maybe I am, but I assure you it is not for the reasons you might think"
"You're still talking in riddles Edward. Just tell me what's going on because I've been attracted to guys before but not like this. You consume my thoughts, just seeing you somehow makes my day feel lighter, its been two weeks and I feel like you know me better than anyone else."
"Rose..."
"Edward!"
She didn't have time to react or think. She saw him move from the swing and in three quick long strides he pulled her into his arms and crashed his lips to hers. The kiss started heated and passionate. Her hands snaked around his neck and clung to the hair at the back of his head. He lwt go of her lips for just a quick second to get some air but quickly started kissing her again like he just couldnt get enough. Her legs felt like jelly and threatened to buckle beneath her but his hand quickly moved from her face to wrap around her waist and hold her to him.
She was shocked when he pulled away from her and stormed down the steps and into his car without a word. As she watched him drive away she raised trembling fingers to touch her lip with a smile on her face.
