Chapter twenty-two
Nigel was holding Marlin's arm, the two of them striding down an endless hallway. The florescent lights above were blinding him, the white floors and walls equally blazing.
"Do you even have an idea where Nemo is?" Marlin said, slightly frustrated. They had been walking for at least twenty minutes, seemingly getting nowhere.
Nigel turned a corner, pulling him with him. "I know he's in one of the operation rooms. We just have to find it."
They turned another corner, when they suddenly crashed into a white figure. Marlin's throat constricted when he recognized her; the red-haired girl who had grabbed his hair earlier.
"Darla," Nigel said, stiffening.
Darla brushed off her white suit and scowled. "That'll be Dr. Moorish to you."
She noticed Marlin and grinned. "I have your son, I have your son." She said in a sing-song voice.
Marlin could feel anger flushing his face, but Nigel squeezed his arm, motioning for him to calm down.
"Speaking of subject 42," Nigel said casually. "What did you end up doing with him? I heard you were quite anxious."
Darla glared at him. "It's none of your business what I do with my lab rats."
Nigel wasn't finished. "You're on your way to him, aren't you?"
Darla's hard stare faltered, but only a little. "Why assume?"
"Tell us where he is," Nigel's tone was dangerous.
Darla examined a nail, perfectly manicured and shined to perfection. "You know what, Avion? I don't think I trust you."
Marlin wasn't fast enough when she suddenly brought a lab bottle down on the pilot's shaggy head. Nigel slumped against him and Marlin slipped his hands out of the loose cuffs. He moved to cuff Darla, when she pulled out a gun.
"Not another move," She hissed. "I could kill you right now for everything you did to us."
Marlin kept his eyes on the gun, planning something, anything. The more he talked, the better. "Don't you want to give me a proper punishment?"
"Exactly," Darla said. "Death is what you deserve."
"Shouldn't you give me a public execution? In front of everyone I hurt?" Marlin said.
Darla actually seemed to consider it. "Okay. I'm on an important trip to experiment your son, anyway. Someone'll find you eventually."
Something crashed into his head and consciousness was ripped from him in a burst of black.
