Chapter four

Marlin's legs were pumping, flying over the pavement. He had to find his son. He had to. These words were the only thing in his mind as the wind ripped through his clothes.

Without paying attention to anything, he suddenly collapsed onto the grass. He was exhausted, and just realizing it. Sweat streamed down his face as he took deep, ragged breaths. He had no idea how long he'd been running, or where he was. Pulling out his phone, he dialed the police department, knowing that running wherever his legs carried him was not the answer.

After some time, somebody picked up. "Hello?" A female's voice. Brenda, his partner.

"Brenda?" Marlin gasped. "My—my son—"

Suddenly, the reality of what had happened hit him and he broke down. "He—someone took him—" His voice broke and then he was sobbing, running a hand miserably over his face.

"Burns? Is that you?" Brenda said steadily. "Is Nemo alright?"

"They took him, Brenda," he sobbed. "I don't know who they were, but they took him."

"Which way did they go? Did they take a vehicle?" Brenda questioned.

Marlin told her everything that had happened. She didn't interrupt, but listened to it all.

"Listen, Burns. I just sent out some people... was there anything on the van that could differentiate from other vans?"

Marlin thought for a second. The van had an insignia, like... PSWay. The corrupt organization he had blown up. That same symbol resembling the shape of a tooth. He had suspected that was who murdered his family, even though no one believed him. Surely, they wouldn't believe him now.

"Burns?"

"The van had a... symbol. Like a tooth." He didn't say anything about PSWay, hoping they would figure it out themselves.

A pause. "Marlin, are you sure that wasn't PSWay? Because that's a closed case. You don't have to worry about it."

"They might still believe it was me." Marlin said quietly, trying not to sound conspicuous.

"Okay, but then why would they kidnap your son?" She said.

Marlin shook his head. He had an idea, they were still angry with him. Trying to punish him like when they killed the rest of his family. But then why didn't they just kill Nemo? Bait, probably. Trying to get him to come rescue Nemo so they can do whatever they wanted to him.

After hanging up with Brenda, he viewed his surroundings for the first time. He had landed in a tiny neighborhood, next to an apartment.

He lifted himself to his feet, then suddenly crashed into someone.

She gave a little cry of surprise and tripped over his feet, knocking into him and sending them both to the ground again. The woman had been holding a pile of papers and folders, and they were strewn everywhere.

"Oh, I am so sorry," She cried, gathering the papers. "I wasn't watching where I was going."

Marlin helped with the papers, catching them as they blew away. The woman was petite, with wavy blonde hair, the tips hovering over her shoulders and tipped with blue. She pulled him to his feet then gasped.

"Oh, dear. What happened to you?"

He looked down at himself, remembering how banged up he was.

"Uh, trouble," He said, suddenly feeling miserable again. He didn't want to break down right now. "I've got to go."

"Weird day," She murmured to herself. "First the scary white van, now a beat-up zombie guy."

Marlin spun around. "Wait, white van? You saw a white van?"

She stepped back, a bit startled. "Uh, yeah. It had this weird logo of like a..."

"A tooth?" He finished.

"That was it!" She exclaimed, then looked at him suspiciously. "Do you know them?"

"I was trying to look for that. Where did it go?" He demanded.

"Uh, this way!" She exclaimed, speed walking down the street. Marlin had to struggle to keep up; this woman was fast. They kept going, past more buildings and turning at random turns.

"Hey, so are you sure you know where we're going?" He panted after awhile.

She said nothing, only glanced behind her shoulder nervously.

"Where did you say it went?" He tried.

Again, no response. She just started walking faster. Soon he had to jog to keep up, and then she was flat out sprinting, glancing back with wide eyes. She ducked into an alley, Marlin following.

"What are you doing?" He yelled, finally catching up. He grabbed her arm.

The woman started panicking, swatting at his hand and shrieking. "Get off me!" She screamed. "I don't have any money, okay?"

"What are you talking about!" He shouted, not in the mood for this. "You told me you'd show me where the van went!"

"Don't come any closer!" She said, narrowing her eyes. A handgun had suddenly appeared in her hands.

Marlin held his hands up and backed off. "Is this some kind of joke? Where's the van?"

She lowered the gun, a puzzled look on her face. "Van?"

"Yes," He said exasperatedly. "A white van with a symbol of a tooth."

"Oh, I am so sorry," She moaned, slumping and putting away her gun. "I— I remember now."

Marlin looked at her impatiently. "Okay, you want to explain this to me?"

The woman had crumpled to the ground. She looked up at him from her place in the grass.

"I—it's my condition," She said miserably. "It's completely random. One second I'm thinking of something, next thing I know I can't—I can't remember..." She hugged her arms around herself and rocked back and forth.

Marlin stared, knowing this woman was clearly not well. "Okay, can you remember now?" He said, almost—almost feeling bad for the insensitivity.

She looked up. "Remember...?"

"The van," He was almost screaming now.

"Uh... yes!" She jumped up, beaming. "The... white van! With the..."

"Tooth?" Marlin finished, crossing his arms.

"Yes, Mr...?"

"Burns," He droned. "Marlin Burns."

"Dorothy Cobalt," She said, offering him a hand. "You can call me Dory, if you want."

Marlin shook his head. "Look, you're wasting my time. I need to find my son."

He spun around to walk away, his face suddenly meeting the point of a rifle.

"Hello," A man's Australian accent said through smiling teeth.
