Chapter fifteen
Nemo's spirit was bright all day. He had been in a good mood ever since the news of his father, positive he would be found. The airplane man, whose name turned out to be Nigel had come with fresh news every day.
He was sitting on a sofa in the glass room, flipping through a magazine. They were by far the most boring thing Nemo had seen at PSWay, and that was saying a lot.
The magazines were plain white with black letters, the only topics about science and the impact PSWay made on the world. They seemed more like instruction pamphlets than magazines, with black and white illustrations of atoms and hunchback anatomies.
Everything was quiet behind the glass, scientists squinting in the light of battery-powered lanterns. Suddenly, a doctor came behind Nemo and touched his shoulder.
"Please come with me," He said emotionlessly.
Nemo jumped up. "Why?"
"Mrs. Darla Moorish is ready for you. Her visit was upped despite the loss of power."
Nemo started panicking. "No, she wasn't supposed to come for days."
"I'm sorry, 42," The doctor said patiently. "But Mrs. Moorish wanted to pick you up as soon as possible."
The doctor grabbed his arm, and he started to struggle. "Gill!" He shouted.
Gill appeared, dressed in his usual black suit. "Where are you taking this young man?" He questioned.
"Mrs. Moorish is ready for him." The doctor replied flatly.
Nemo stared up at Gill, his eyes pleading. Gill leaned down and whispered in Nemo's ear.
"When you hear the three taps, run out the door. Don't stop running."
Nemo didn't say anything else, but let the doctor lead him away. They walked through halls and corridors until he stopped at a door.
"Wait in here for Mrs. Moorish," The doctor ordered. "Don't attempt escape, the doors cannot lock due to loss of power, but there will be a guard posted here to watch you."
Nemo walked into the room and sat down at a bench. He twisted his t-shirt in his hands and tapped his foot on the floor.
"Slacking off again, are you?" Gill's voice sounded behind the door.
"I'm guarding the subject," Another voice—the guard's.
"Nice try," Gill responded. "You were posted in the glass room at this moment."
"But the boss said—"
"Return to your post, sir." Gill said sternly.
There was silence for a few seconds, then three taps on the door.
Without hesitation, Nemo jumped up and threw the door open. Gill had disappeared, along with any other people. Nemo sprinted down the hall, running as fast as his legs could carry him. He was going to escape. Despite his fear, he almost smiled. His legs kept moving, his arms pumping at his sides. He kept going, going, until he crashed into a white blazer.
"Oh, you must be my shiny new subject," A woman said in a thick accent. Her dark red hair was pulled painfully back into a tight bun. She smiled, showing a mouth full of braces.
His arm burned as she twisted it, spinning him around and pressing his back against her body.
"My gift from daddy."
