Chapter 64: *Filler* Days with the Straw Hats: Sanji
I dont own One Piece
Since this last week was my birthday and I didn't have time this week to type up a full chapter with our current arc, so I did this instead.. I hope ya'll dont mind. I also added a little character bio about Katsu at the end of the chapter. If you guys like those I can add some more with my other OC's in later chapters.
Also, this filler takes place after the timeskip, and you'll get a slight spoiler with Katsu's nickname for Sanji.
............................
There were crew members which I spent a lot of time with. That being Robin, Zoro, Chopper, Luffy, and Franky.
Though with my Captain it's mainly because he tries to demand I draw ridiculous things. Such as him riding a dragon, or a dragon piggybacking him. He's a strange man, but I've found that I happen to like strange.
Chopper tends to stick towards me for many reasons. One being he's my nap buddy, along with Zoro. The other being he's a doctor who is constantly worrying over my psych. He's been trying to cure the rest of my amnesia, but we haven't found anything yet. However, at one of our little therapy sessions when I described some of my choppy memories he did look concerned. He stopped trying as hard to recover my memory after that bit, mumbling something that it might be good I dont remember.
Of course Robin and Franky are my normal go to people. Typically Robin comes around when I'm with Franky, though only long enough to glare at him with a silent warning.
Zoro is another of my go to people. We have at least one nap a day, sometimes two. It depends how bad Sanji has annoyed him and Luffy has bugged me. He serves as a good lookout and I've found I relax somewhat better around him. He must not mind me being around him either, since he appears to wait for me to sit beside him before he falls asleep. When we're not napping I've spent a good amount of time training with him. Lately he's been trying to show me how to sharpen my weapons.
Of course there are the crew members which I don't spend as much time with. Those consisting of Brook, Nami, Sanji, and Usopp. That dosen't necessarily mean I dont enjoy their company, I just dont have as much time with them as I do with the others.
Today, however, was one of those rare days that I got to spend with Sanji. He was the first one to get up normally, and I just happened to be up as well. Well, Correction, I never went to sleep.
When he walked into the kitchen, still in a slight daze with a cigarette hanging between his lips, he blinked at me for a moment. I had been working on one of my drawing from Luffy's last fight all night, and had just nearly finished it, when I looked up and met his dazed look. He blinked again, starting to look more awake the longer he stared at me.
I offered a small smile and raised my hand. "Good morning, Mr. Husband."
He swooned over the nickname I had given to him. At least now he didn't have a nosebleed everytime I said it.
"My eyes weren't decieving me, there really is an angel gracing me with her presence!" He smiled, walking towards the kitchen. "Why didn't you get me up sooner? I would have made you something when you woke up."
I waved my hand dismissively. "Nah, I never went to sleep. Mr. Glow Up was on night watch and fell asleep so I stayed up just in case." Before Sanji could threaten to kick Usopp to death, I added, "I honestly couldn't sleep anyway. It was too quiet with Nami and Robin, and I had too many ideas going in my head for my drawings."
Sanji appeared to calm down, but he frowned as he pulled out some oranges from the fridge. "I would have made you some tea to help sooth you if you needed me to. It's really not good to be staying up all night."
He wasn't the only one to nag me about that, though he was a lot nicer about it. Robin and Chopper were the worst about nagging me. Zoro was far more subtle, his actions silent but clear when he practically forced me to take two naps.
"It's fine, I'll take a nap at some point today." I answered, turning a page in my book and began to sketch Sanji as he prepped.
I paused when he slid a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice towards me. My eyes brightening as I grabbed it. Barely managing a thank you before I began drinking it.
"My mom used to go across the island to gather oranges for me. The village refused to sell her any, and she knew how much I loved them." I smiled at the memory of my mother. "Then on my birthday she would make a vanilla orange cake, orange for me and vanilla for my brother."
Sanji smiled at me, pouring himself a cup of coffee. "She sounds like a great mother."
I nodded eagerly, "She was the best! My father was never around, but she would talk about him a lot. Apparently there was some kind of agreement they came up with, Sato knows it but he won't really elaborate on it."
Sanji nodded then looked curious. "Is Makoto really your brother then?"
"Ah, sorta, yeah. He was the only kid that actually played and didn't bully Sato and I. His grandparents were raising him, and when they passed my mom didn't hesitate to take him in." I shrugged. "Sato and I easily took him as our brother too. You know, they used to be the biggest wimps. I had to defend them all the time, the amount of fights I got into was ridiculous."
A laugh bubbled out of Sanji. "Who would have thought that those two used to be wimps."
"You can tease them about it later. You have my blessing." I grinned, taking another sip from my orange juice. "My mother really was the best. She never got mad at me, and I know I was a lot of trouble. She used to compliment all of my drawings and encourage me to draw more. She was the first to believe in me.
"Mother's are the best thing, aren't they?" His voice was small, as was the smile on his face. "I used to cook for mine, and I really messed up a lot as a kid." A small chuckle left his lips.
I stared at him for a moment. Though he smiled, and it was filled with love, I could see the pain and sadness. Clearly his our mother had passed as well.
It looked like taking about her brought pain to him.
"Ne, Mr. Husband, can you teach me how to cook?" I asked, "I can help you with breakfast?"
That was a question I have been wanting to ask Sanji. While he got his nickname from how he cooks, I can't expect him to be able to cook for me for the rest of my life. Even if I want him to.
Sanji appeared delighted at my words, quickly pulling out another cutting board and placing it beside him.
"Of course, Katsu-chan!" He pulled out a chef knife and placed it beside the cutting board before picking up his own. "I have to show you the correct way to hold your knife first. I don't want you cutting yourself by accident."
I stood up and walked over to stand beside him, my tongue poking out as I tried to copy the grasp he had on his knife. Then he held up his other hand, curling his fingers inward to almost form a fist.
"Chefs refer to this as the bear claw, we curl in our fingertips to avoid accidentally chopping them off." He explained, placing his hand on the board to hold down the vegetables and rocked the knife back and forth, slowly chopping the vegetables. "With this you will have less likely to cur yourself, which is how we can chop faster. Our knuckles help guide the knife, so we slowly inch out way back as we chop."
I nodded and began copying him, successfully chopping the vegetables. He praised me before turning to grab something. Wanting to chop faster, I increased my speed.
Somehow it caught on fire.
I pouted and placed the knife down. This happens everytime I try to cook.
"How's it goi- how is that on fire?" Sanji blinked at the burning vegetables.
I puffed out my cheeks, "They made a deal with the devil!"
After Sanji put out the fire, he turned me towards the pan with eggs. Instructing me to simply make the figure 8 with the rubber spatula until all the eggs are solid. It was quite straightforward. No way I could mess this up.
So I turned the heat up a little and turned the spatula.
It also caught on fire.
My eyes widened as I stared at it. The eggs still looked runny, but it was on fire. Does that mean I still need to use the spatula?
"Ah, Mr. Husband, it's on fire." I started, making him turn around quickly. "But the eggs don't look cooked yet-"
"Watch out, Katsu-chan!" He quickly put out the fire before smiling at me. It looked strained though. "H-How about you go and juice some fruit?"
I smiled and nodded, "Okay!"
That was easy, Sanji had already cut the oranges in half. All I had to do was press them down in the juicer.
By now Zoro had walked into the dining room. He hadn't said anything, but he was observing us. He hadn't seen my other two fires yet, thankfully. He also hasn't greeted either of us, looking just as groggy as Sanji had earlier.
He stared at the juicer as I began to press down on the oranges. Just when I thought I had gone through one half without a mishap, the machine caught on fire. I stared at it dully, my hand lifting the orange to pull it away.
Zoro's eye widened and his attention snapped up to look at me. When he opened his mouth to say something, I quickly held up a finger to my lips in a panicked manner.
Sanji would be so mad if he found out I just caught our juicer on fire.
Zoro closed his mouth, then reopened it only to wince.
"Katsu-chan! Watch out!"
Sanji quickly twirled me away from the juicer, as if to make sure I didn't burn myself, then put out the fire. He stared at it for a moment before looking at me with a smile.
"How about I just cook for all of us?" He offered, "I'd really love it if you could finish that picture of me from earlier."
"Oi, Katsu," Zoro interrupted, "Can you go grab that green fuzzy blanket? I left it on my hammock."
I blinked at Zoro. Did he know already that I hadn't slept? We used that blanket when we took our naps sometimes.
Either way, I nodded and turned to leave the kitchen. Only faintly I could make out Zoro calling out to Sanji.
"Shitty cook,-"
The door shut behind me just as Robin walked up the stairs. She smiled at me and wished me a good morning before walking into the kitchen.
I paused, wondering what Zoro was going to say before shrugging and walking towards the boys rooms. I needed to get that blanket for him. Then maybe we'll have a nap.
Hopefully Sanji will teach me later how to cook.
