Chapter 34: Memories (Part 4)

I don't own One Piece

So the ending of the chapter is going to be very choppy. Basically you guys are getting a run down of the memories Katsu is remembering, and towards the end it's only fragments therefore choppy. It might be confusing, but it is intended.
.................................................

8 Years Old
.................................................

We had waited the hour our mother had instructed. All between that hour we had heard shouting from the marines. From what we understood, it sounded like someone wasn't from their crew. Whoever it was had been arrested and taken for questioning. The past twenty minutes have been silence.

Sato had nudged me once he realized an hour had passed. Then all three of us were scrambling to get out of our fort. We didn't wait for one another as we exited, instead we scrambled towards our home.

My twin was the first to make it, his movement coming to a complete halt. Makoto had been right behind him, he had the same reaction as Sato. Finally, I saw the reason behind the other two's actions. My own body doing the same thing.

A body laid on the ground. Red hair splayed around her, and her head turned away from us. Blood that was still wet had pooled around her soaking the dirt under her, the main source coming from a small hole on the left side of her chest.

It wasn't just a body. Not to us.

"Ka-san!" I was the first to move, running closer to my mom.

She was fine.

Dropping to my knees, I didn't pay any mind as my knees scraped against the dirt. Instead, I placed my hands on my mother's face. For a quick second, I pulled away when I realized how cold she was. Then, with my hands more shaky, I softly turned her head towards me.

"Ka-san," I muttered, seeing her face. Her eyes were closed and a smile was present.

She was fine.

"Ne, Sato, Makoto, and I listened." I said, "We didn't leave the fort until after an hour. You know how hard that was for me. I wanted to come out right away. But I listened." She didn't move.

"We kept Makoto quiet too. You didn't tell him what he needed to do." I swallowed, my throat feeling thicker. "Ah, Ka-san. You're really cold, we should get you a blanket."

She was fine.

Still behind me stood my brothers. Neither had moved, though I could hear some sniffling. Rather than pay attention to them, I kept my attention on my mom.

"We'll call Uncle Shanks." I said, my hand slowly placing on top of her forehead. I had hoped I would feel a fever, but instead I received the same cold clammy feeling. My lip trembled and I felt my eyes burn. "You're super strong. Super, super strong. You're fine."

She wasn't fine.

Warm wet tears trailed down my cheeks as I bit my lip to keep from making any noise. She didn't move. Not to breath. Not to open her eyes. Not to tease me for dirtying my dress which she would have to clean later. Not to sooth the boys behind me in tears. She did not move. She would not move again.

Softly, I took my hands away from her face. Instead I laid them in my lap as I stared at her face just a little longer. I wanted to make sure I remembered what she looked like, and instantly I was trying to lock her voice in my mind.

Finally I stood up. My eyes looking down at the red dirt that stained my knees and dress. I would have to clean that later. I need to be cleaner now.

I didn't look back at my brothers as I walked inside the house. My moves felt robotic as I made my way through the hall and through the room until I was holding the transponder snail. I knew the number by heart, so there wasn't much thought with dialing it. The soft dialing pur didn't register in my head.

"Yo! Sayomi!" The snail grinned, three scar like lines going through it's left eye. Loud cheers echoed in the background, cheering the name. "You missing your big brother?"

My lip trembled as more burning tears filled my eyes. The grin dropped off the snails face as it formed a more concerned look.

"Sayomi?"

"It's-It's Mitsu." I managed a whisper, all background noise becoming silent.

"Mitsu." Shanks mumbled, the snail's mouth dropping only slightly in shock. "Oh god." He knew the drill. He knew Sato and I weren't supposed to call. "We'll be there as soon as we can. Mitsu, it's okay."

"She's cold." I muttered, "Do- Do I give her a blanket. Or..."

I could see a few tears form in the snails eyes. "Ah. Get her her favorite blanket and cover her, Mitsu. Then set a bottle of sake by her. Then, go by the river and pick some flowers, the prettiest you can find. Preferably lilies. It'll be a while until I can get there, so I'm going to need you to do something for me."

A soft 'Okay' left my lips.

Instructions left Shank's lips. Ones that brought more tears to my eyes, but I nodded and kept silent.

...........................................

It's been a week and Shanks wasn't here yet. We've been staying in our fort, none of us wanting to go back home. It's been three days since the marines finally left, which meant had given us permission to go back into town for anything we had needed. It's been a day since my brother went into town and came back with bruises and his hair chopped off.

Having seen my twin attacked, my grief had turned into anger. I wanted nothing more than to storm over to the other kids and beat them senseless. Between Sato and Makoto, they managed to keep me from confronting the ones responsible.

But I noticed a change in Sato. It wasn't just him grieving over their mother. It was like him having his hair cut made him weak. Physically.

Even now I felt the anger coming back to me as I looked over my brother. "I'm gonna crush them." I growled, making my brother look back at me. "They'll regret every laying a finger on you."

"Mitsu," Sato murmured, placing a hand on my arm to stop me. His grip was weaker than I was used to. "Don't. Please."

The anger left me and a sigh left me as I deflated against the tree trunk. I didn't want to upset him more, and I would like to think mom wouldn't want me doing that either. Instead I placed my attention on Makoto, who had been gone a while now.

"Where's Makoto?" I asked, feeling a large amount of concern fill me. "He should be back by now."

Sato looked around the fort, then stared at me. Finally, he stood up. "You're right. Stay here, Mitsu. I'll go bring him back, he probably got distracted. Do not leave here." When I opened my mouth to complain, Sato sent me a look and I sighed. Instead I nodded, and pulled my legs towards me and watched as my twin cautiously left our fort.

...................................

The waiting was driving me crazy. Considering I had to light a candle, I had figured it was dark out now. Neither Sato or Makoto were back yet. I've been sitting by the entrance for hours now, my hands gripping the ends of my dirty dress tightly. I had tried to wash it, but it was stained.

If Sato hasn't used that tone with me, I would have been out of here hours ago. It's a miracle that I've managed to listen this long. Wringing out the ends of my dress anymore I groaned.

Snatching the red hoodie I threw it on, Makoto wouldn't mind if I used his hoodie. I tucked my hair into the hood and slipped on my black flats. Then I crawled out of our fort. I couldn't wait any longer.

I made it to the edge of the forest, where I waited another hour. It wasn't until a few lights went out that I moved through the town. If I couldn't find my boys, then someone would know something.

My eyes snapped to one of the bullies that I knew was responsible for cutting Sato's hair. He was busy collecting firewood, and he was alone. He might provide some information, and I knew I could take him by himself.

With purposeful steps, I walked to stand in front of him. Placing my hand of the log he was about to pick up, I got his attention.

The frown on his face turned into a sneer when he realized who I was. "Oh, it's girlies sister. I bet he loved that haircut we gave him." His eyebrows pulled together in confusion. "What are you still doing here?"

I narrowed my eyes, my grip tightening on the log. "Where's Sato and Makoto?"

He smirked, "Who knows? Maybe they're in a ditch."

My heart picked up and my body flared with anger. My arm swung out. Hearing the smack first, I then felt the satisfying throbbing pain in my fist. He fell back, the firewood in his hands scattering to the ground around him.

"Don't ever say that about them! Or you'll be the one found in a ditch." I growled, raising my fist as warning. "Now, what did you do to them?" I took a threatening step forward.

"N-Nothing!" He stammered, his eyes wide as he tried to move away from me. "Some lady with short hair took them!"

"Marines?" I asked, keeping my body stiff and hopefully threatening.

"I don't know! The ship was, but they looked like pirates!"

I blinked. Pirates had taken my brothers? Reaching down, I gripped the boy by the neck of his shirt and pulled him up a little. "What else can you tell me about them? Was there a Jolly Roger anywhere?"

"I don't know! I didn't get a good look at them! They took what they wanted and left!"

Shoving him away from me I ran towards the docks. It was the only place I really knew how to get to. Sato and Mom made sure I knew how to get there by myself, even with my directional issues. Though I refuse to admit out loud to them that I can't tell my left from my right.

The tapping from my shoes filled the empty streets. Sounding twice as loud as it was the only sound that filled the silence. As one arm swung with my running motion, I made sure to keep one hand on my hood to keep my face covered.

The old damp wood creaked as I dashed across it. The mist from the sea filling the air, cooling my face as I came to an abrupt stop. It was nearly impossible to see anything through the dark ocean. But I swore I could make out one ship like figure.

My heart pounded and it felt like I couldn't catch my breath. With shaking hands, I cupped them around my mouth. "Sato!" I cried, tears forming in my eyes. "Makoto!" I knew they wouldn't be able to hear me. They were too far. Though that didn't stop me from yelling until my throat was raw, just hoping they would hear me and somehow turn around.

Mom said we were supposed to stick together.

We were supposed to stay together.

Sinking to the ground, I was no longer sure if my cheeks were damp with tears or from the mist. They were all gone. I was alone.

I didn't notice the sun come up. I didn't realize my body was numb from sitting outside in the cold all night. Not even the footsteps stopped me from staring blankly at the ongoing ocean. Their voices didn't register in my head. The grips on my arms didn't faze me. Even when the sea was dragged from my vision I was still staring blankly.

They were gone.

Shanks was supposed to show up and make everything okay.

Where was Shanks?

I want everything to be okay again.

The voices spoke again, maybe they've been speaking this entire time, I didn't respond. My head was knocked to the side as a fist landed on my cheek, though my face was too numb to register the pain fully. The voices grew louder when I did nothing. Another hit landed on my face. One on my stomach.

Shanks will make everything better.

He'll show up and everything will be okay again.

It will all be okay.

I wasn't sure how long the assault continued. I knew they weren't done, and then I could feel my hair being pulled. Still I didn't react. Not even when a large shadow blocked out any light and I was dropped to the ground. The voices hushed- no, they ran away.

"...tsu?" That voice was familiar. Blinking slowly, I looked up. "Mitsu?" Red hair, straw hat. "Hey? You okay kid?" How long have I been staring at Shanks? His eyes were shining with teary worry, though he refused to let them fall.

"Uncle Shanks?" I whispered, my voice hoarse.

"Mitsu, where's Sato?" He asked, softly picking me up and cradling my cold body to his burning one. "Where's Makoto?"

Just hearing my brother's name brought another assault of tears to my eyes and my lip trembled. "S-Sato..." I couldn't breath. My heart raced, throbbing against my chest loudly. "Gone!"

His eyes squinted down at me, confusion lacing his face. "What? Where's Makoto?" I only managed to shake my head with jerky motions as I struggled to form any words. "What happened?"

I gasped, trying to fill my lungs as tears streamed down my face. Not able to comprehend any more words, I could only shake my head as I tried to breath. My body shook as more tears escaped my eyes and snot trailed down my nose.

"Shanks, we should get her out of here." I was fairly sure that was Ben's voice. "From what I got was that Sato and Makoto were taken by some marine or pirate crew. More likely pirate." He paused, and I felt Shanks pull me closer to his chest. "Mitsu can't handle everything right now. We need to leave, the town dosen't like pirates."

"Right." Shanks muttered, standing up while still holding me. "It's going to be okay."

Shanks was here.

Everything was supposed to be okay now.

But everything was not okay.

"We'll get Sato and Makoto back." Shanks whispered.

...............................

It's cold. I'm sitting on a barrel, watching a man with red hair speak through the transponder snail.

".....Where are they heading?"

"Where we're from. The New World...."

..........................................

I frowned, looking back and forth from my cup to the cup resting in the red headed man's. "I want what Uncle's drinking!" I looked over towards Yasopp, a grin on my face. "He's the captain, so he gets the best, right?"

Ben stepped up, after throwing out the end of his cigarette, and grinned as he shoved a cup into his Captain's hand. "Here, a refill, Captain." He looked towards me, "He does drink the same stuff as you." When I frowned in suspicion, he took the cup away from Shanks and handed it to me, the crew growing loud in protest. "Try it then."

......................................

"Are we close to finding Sato and Makoto?"

"Ah, we're gonna meet up with some allies. Then we're gonna cut them off and get them back."

.........................

"Test subject number 0791 is awake."

Panic filled me as I tried to move but found myself strapped to a metal table.

"Where am I? Where's Shanks?!"

A tall figure moved towards me, in their hand a metal pole with a glowing red symbol at the end. He shushed me as he brought the pole closer to me. "Before we conduct any research, we need to ensure our property is well labled."

............................

A large hand covered my mouth, ordering me to swallow. My eyes widened as I was denied the ability to breath until I swallowed, my legs trying to kick but not able to from the restrains. Finally, I gave in. Once he assured I had swallowed, he allowed me to breath again.

"Test subject has consumed the artificial fruit at 10:03 am. Reminder this is the third try. Subject appears to be in pain immediately after this one..."

.....................................

"Shanks is coming!" I shrieked, "He'll be here any day!"

"Shut up about that pirate!"

"No! You'll never take away my memories! They're mine! That's one freedom you'll never have!"

"...I'll cleanse your mind of that filth."

................................

End of Chapter 34!

So how was it? I don't know if I was effective enough on the death though. Well, after this chapter we're done with the memories for now. Katsu had regained most of her childhood, at least she remembered the time with her brothers. You guys will have to wait a little longer to get the rest.

This is not edited.
