Chapter 2: Who Called the Marines?!

I don't own One Piece.
3rd Person POV
.........................................................

The black haired teen wearing the Straw Hat stared, with a mouthful of meat, at the girl who had just ran out of the bar. He chewed the meat then swallowed before looking towards his first mate.

"Zoro, who was she?" Luffy asked, taking another bite off of his meat.

After taking a big swig of sake, Zoro answered. "Ah, just some girl who we helped. It seems like she helps keep this town safe or something." Zoro said.

Luffy almost looked thoughtful for a moment, if that was possible. "Can she fight?"

At this, Zoro smirked, "She's not bad with a sword, hell I might have to challenge her."

Nodding to himself, he thought back to his little talk with Mamoru. After the recovery of finding out he was the Pirate King's navigator, he had ended up bragging about the girl. With his mouth still full, he came to a decision and announced it. "I've decided, she's going to join our crew."

Both men from Luffy's crew blinked. "You can't just decide that!" They both shouted, though they should be used to this by now. It was the reason they had ended up joining as well.

Ignoring them he stood up and asked, "Where'd she go?"

This time, Sanji replied while looking at the bleeding old man. "I think she went to look for a doctor, her friend there was shot."

Luffy looked at the old man, just realizing he was bleeding and almost dead. He quickly ripped off another piece of meat with his teeth. Seeing as how Sanji didn't really answer him, he looked at his first mate. "Ne, Zoro, which way did she go?"

Zorro pointed to the right, "That way."

Sanji's eye twitched, "It was the other way, idiot."

Luffy nodded, "Yosh, this way then!" He started running in the opposite direction Zoro had pointed to.

"Luffy, where are you going?" Zorro shouted, watching his captain leave through the doors.

"I'm gonna help her find someone!" Luffy shouted, his loud voice projecting through the crowd he had just entered.

...................................................

Two pirates from the straw hats crew stopped at the dock. Shopping bags filled their hands, which they had planned to drop off at the ship. However their attention was brought onto the approaching ships.

The shorter of the two with bright orange hair gasped. "No way.... Did they really manage to follow us here?!"

Beside her the raven haired woman narrowed her eyes. "That's no good. There were still things I wanted to see."

The orange haired female, also known as Cat Burglar Nami, looked at her log pose. "Our log pose isn't even set yet! Hopefully the residents here wont be too angry, since this island is supposed to remain marine free." She looked over at her companion, "What do you think, Robin?"

"We should inform someone. I believe I had overheard a man talking about someone named Mamoru. Apparently he normally deals with these types of issues." Robin informed Nami, who nodded. "They also mentioned another person working with him, though I can't remember her name."

"We should hurry then." Nami turned around and began to run, quickly followed by Robin.

While running they ended up running to a frantic crimson-haired girl. Nami and the crimson-haired female fell to the ground. Robin helped Nami stand, while a pair of arms grew from the ground and helped the red haired girl stand.

"Sorry!" Both women exclaimed, obviously both in a rush.

The crimson-haired girl, almost ready to run off, paused realizing they weren't anyone familiar. Which meant they were pirates, meaning they must have a doctor. She resisted the urge to grab the orange haired girl by her shoulders and shake her. "Do you guys have a doctor?" She asked, already expecting them to have a doctor.

Both Robin and Nami blinked, they could sense the urgency with the girl in front of them. "We have a doctor in our crew, why does it matter?" Nami was the one to speak.

"Please, I need him! M-My friend was shot, we don't have much time!" She pleaded, just barely restraining herself from shaking the female in front of her.

The two girls looked at each other, obviously wanting to help. "Chopper wouldn't mind helping, but I don't know where he is." Nami muttered.

Robin opened her mouth to say something, but the girl was too impatient. "Damn it, thanks!" She went to run past the girls, but was stopped by Nami.

"Do you know where a man named Mamoru is?" Nami asked.

To this, the girl's body went stiff and she looked at Nami. Her eyes glaring accusingly. "Wat do you want with Mamoru?"

Realizing the girls protectiveness, Robin took over. "We only wish to inform him of an upcoming problem."

Swallowing the girl nodded, "I'll take care of that. He's at the bar right now with my friend I told you about."

Robin raised an eyebrow, "How do we know we can trust you?"

"Mamoru is..." She paused, as if coming up with the right way to describe their relationship. She wasn't going to say he was like the father, yet that was the best way to describe their relationship. "He... I work with him, I guess. Basically if he doesn't deal with a situation, it's me."

Nami nodded, "Fine. Well some marines are close to docking here."

The red haired girl forced out a breath, a slight tremor in her hand. There was only one other time marines had docked here, and Mamoru had taken care of them. "Okay, I'll take care of them. But you two have to do me a favor."

"Why should we do you a favor?" Robin asked.

She smirked, "Because, I'm helping get rid of these marines. If I let them come, your crew might be the first to go. Especially if they were following your pirate crew."

Robin smirked, "Very well, what would you like?"

"Could you just bring a doctor to the bar? It's the only bar here, and if you need help everyone knows where to find Mamoru." She smiled. "Thanks!" With that, she started running, luckily in the right direction of the docks.

..................................................................

"Katsu?"  Luffy called, rubbing his head as he ran threw the streets. "Where did she go?"

"Luffy!" Turning around, Luffy grinned at Usopp and Chopper. His attention going to the small reindeer.

"There are marines on their way! I think they followed us!" Usopp screamed, panic clear on his face.

Completely ignoring Usopp, Luffy addressed the small reindeer. "Oi! Chopper, there's someone who's hurt! Their at a bar that way!" He pointed in the direction he had been running from.

"Show us!" Chopper demanded.

Sighing loudly, Luffy did as he was requested. He started running back towards the bar, Usopp and Chopper following behind him. Luckily they weren't far form the bar, which a crowd had managed to form around.

Luffy shoved his way through until he was inside the bar. What had been drops of blood on the ground had now formed a puddle.

"Come on, Jiro." Mamoru muttered, still trying to stop the bleeding. "Katsu will be back soon with a doctor. You wouldn't want to upset the kid and die. Come on, hang in there."

"Oi! I brought a doctor!" Luffy shouted, not understanding the idea of being quiet. He stopped beside Mamoru, who looked at Luffy then at the small reindeer with a raised eyebrow.

Confusion crossed his face, "Why would you help me, pirate?" It wasn't common for pirates to offer help to another.

Luffy grinned, "Because, I've decided Katsu is going to be in my crew! And this guy seems important to her, I wouldn't want him to die or anything."

While Mamoru had a moment to be shocked, Chopper examined Jiro. Chopped quickly pushed Mamoru away, "Don't apply pressure yet! He still has the bullet in him!"

Mamoru jumped back, almost as if he was shocked. Chopper quickly set to work, having kept his medical bag with him. "I need to get the bullet out first, then we can seal the wound."

After staring at the reindeer, Mamoru looked back to Luffy. "Don't think she'll just agree. That kid's very picky with who she befriends. Hell, she turned down an offer from someone in whitebeard's crew. Either way, thank you for helping Jiro." Mamoru stood off to the side, not wanting to get in the way of the doctor at work.

Luffy only laughed, "I'm not worried. She'll join, it's final."

Mamoru blinked, staring at the pirate. He recognized the hat, one that his captain had given to Shanks, who had apparently given to this kid. It wasn't the hat that reminded him on his old captain. Rather, it was the attitude. It was exactly how he had managed to join the pirate crew, since his captain had decided he would have no one else but him.

"Luffy!" Usopp hissed, "Did you forget about the marines?!"

"Marines?" Luffy asked, "What are you talking about?"

Annoyance bubbled in Usopp, his captain never listened! "The marines are on their way here!" He shouted.

Hearing this, Mamoru stepped over to them. "What? Boy, are you telling the truth?"

Usopp nodded, "Yes! They will be here soon!"

"Shit! Katsu's still out there. Why didn't anyone tell me earlier?!" Wipping the blood from his hands onto a nearby cloth, he pulled his axe from the counter. He paused, looking at Jiro and the reindeer. "Can I leave him to you?"

Chopper nodded, "Don't worry! I'll take care of him!"

"Thanks, Racoon-dog!" Mamoru shouted while walking to the door.

"I'm a reindeer!" Chopper's shouts fell on deft ears.

Luffy quickly ran after Mamoru, followed by Sanji and Zorro. After all, they both had a good idea what their captain was up to. The crowd, which had been quite loud, grew quiet at the sight of Mamoru.

"A doctor is working on Jiro." Mamoru answered their unasked concern. Everyone on this island was namaka, so their concern for Jiro was understandable. "All of you need to get inside your home. Marines are on their way. If they happen to step on this place, I'd rather pretend you all didn't exist."

Quickly, the crowd disappeared, each going to their own homes. Sanji blinked, "Why are they hiding from the marines?"

Mamoru glanced back at the three males, just now noticing them there. "Everyone in this town was once a pirate. Some settled down here due to an injury that couldn't be fixed, others from lost nakama. For one reason or another they found their way here, where they opened a store of one kind or another." He started walking, the three males following after him.

"It was decided this island would remain free, from both marine and pirate rule. Half of this island is still ruled over by the first occupants, wild animals. We have a trench built to separate us from the animals. And marines typically don't land here because it's only been founded by one person. When they do happen to land here, we try to make sure it's on the other side. Pirates know better, all the good navigators know where to land on this island." He smirked, remembering the little signals he had set out years ago for only pirate navigators eyes.

"So, if marines landed here everyone would be arrested." Sanji muttered.

Mamoru nodded, "Yes, which is why I have them hide. There's secret compartments in their homes, which I had instructed them to make when they built it. In case I, or Katsu, fail in protecting this island, only we will go down with the marines. Though, it's not likely we will fail."

He looked back at them, "Now, why don't you head back to the bar. I'll handle the marines."

"You?" Zorro asked, raising an eyebrow. "Are you sure you could take on the marines by yourself?"

The man smirked, "I wasn't part of the pirate king's crew for nothing."

Surprise lit up the three straw hats faces, and stars formed in Luffy's eyes.  "You were on the pirate king's crew?!"

Mamoru chuckled, "That I was. Perhaps that's why Katsu's so picky..."

"Luffy!" Two female voices shouted.

The four men looked towards the voices. Robin and Nami were running towards them, making hearts form in Sanji's eyes.

"Nami-swan! Robin-chan!" Sanji called, a goofy smile on his face.

"Have you seen Chopper? We ran into this girl who was looking for a doctor. But when we told her about the mairnes, she went to deal with them. In return we told her we would bring a doctor-" Nami was cut off.

"You mean Katsu." Lufy interrupted. "We already got Chopper dealing with the old guy."

"You said she was going to stop the marines?" Mamoru demanded, clutching his axe harder.

"Yes, is there a problem?" Robin asked, looking at Mamoru.

"That idiot! She's only taken down pirates before. Marines that are this far in the grandline are no joke. Sorry, but I gotta go." Running around Nami and Robin, Mamoru made his way for the docks.

Taking a moment to adjust his hat, Luffy grinned. "Sanji, Zorro. How about we go kick some marine ass?"

Sanji smiled, lighting up a cigarette and taking a long drag. "Sounds good to me."

Zorro placed his hand on his swords, a smirk playing on his lips. "Wouldn't miss it for anything."
