escape
verb ~ to break free from confinement or control
The day was closing to an end. I had spent most of it sat in shock, staring out of the window or down at my stomach in disbelief. I didn't feel any different, nor did I look different, other than being dirty. I had no way of knowing if I was carrying a pup without a doctor, my wolf, or another wolf. I could not trust the people here, but something within me knew they were not lying.
I sat down in the corner against the wall, my chain too short this time to reach the bed. I wasn't sure how long I sat here, but as the sky began to darken, enormous clouds covered the sparse land of the outdoors. I could feel a storm coming, both physically and mentally. Something was happening or something was forthcoming, and I wasn't sure if it was good or bad.
I felt on edge. With my thighs to my chest and my cheek on my knee, it helped ground me. The chain grew heavier as the day went by, and I sighed with boredom. I had to have been here for like two weeks, surely. The days all blurred together and most of the time, I had been unconscious. I just hoped someone did not drug again me in my sleep. That thought alone was what kept me awake. I was exhasuted.
If I fell asleep, they would hurt me again and take my blood. Needles and white coats, forcing me to a table as they took without my permission. It terrified me. I had been so oblivious and hoped that nothing else happened whilst I was under.
My hairs suddenly stood on end, and I heard the thundering sound of footsteps outside my door. I tensed, keeping quiet and slowing my breathing. Shouting filled the halls before a sudden shrilling filled the air. I winced, wanting to cover my ears, but the cuffs would not let me move so far. I tilted my head, using my shoulder on one side and my hands on the other. It mostly helped, but the alarm did not stop ringing.
I felt tears building in my eyes, knowing that whatever it was, can't be good. There was pounding on my door, heavy and panicked, that had me push myself into the corner. The door swung open, and I exclaimed in surprise as it banged against the wall.
The masked man stood there, his chest heaving for breath. The ringing had grown louder, shouting filling the air. Somewhere in the distance, growls and screams filled the air.
"Wh-What's going on?" I stammered.
He grunted, coming to remove the chain from the floor. He tugged on them, pulling my hands away from my face. The alarm suddenly stopped, and I shakily stood to my feet. He gave me a stern look before turning and leading me by the chain. I stumbled on weak legs, following behind him.
"Where are you taking me?" I worried.
We walked down a hallway, and came to a stop by Master's bedroom door. I swallowed nervously as he knocked and walked in straight away. Master was pacing around, shoving things into a bag.
"Ah, good, you're here." He rushed. "We are leaving."
"W-What's going on?" I breathed.
He turned around to face us, eyes flashing red. I swallowed nervously, taking a step backwards as his fury reached me.
"We are moving to a more secure location." He stated.
Walking towards us, he took the chain from the masked man before handing him the bag. He pulled me out of the door, the masked man rushing behind us. Despite the alarm shutting off, red lights flashed every two meters. I winced at their brightness, almost tripping from the force of being pulled along.
We rounded a corner and came to a stop by a door. Master glanced behind us and nodded at the masked man. I went to turn around as approaching footsteps sounded, but Master yanked me forwards. I stumbled as he opened the latch on the door, the sudden freezing air blowing my hair wild. The thin dress I wore did nothing to protect from the oncoming cold.
We were really leaving? I was confused, my emotions running haywire. Was I finally getting to leave?
I pulled myself to a halt, and Master turned around to sneer at me. I shook my head, a defiant scowl on my face.
"I am not walking in that." I stated, looking down at my bare legs.
He growled, following my trail of thoughts. "I do not care."
Time to play his game.
"Please, Master." I faux pleaded. "I will get frostbite."
His eyes flickered at the tenderness I gave him and he sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose.
"Fine. Carry her." He sighed. "Quickly. They're coming."
Who's coming? I wanted to ask, but thought better and kept my mouth shut. Smart, Nova, smart plans only. Right now, I wasn't sure if the intruder was good or bad and Master was taking me away from the violence. So that was the best bet, right?
Right?
I was scooped up into a new man's arms, looking over his shoulder to notice there were about three more wolves behind us. I wondered where Raven was... The man holding me was new; I had not met him whilst I was here. Despite my lack of senses, I knew he was a werewolf. I could feel it in his blood; he was strong so looks like I still have some of my skills.
I eyed him curiously as Master gave him my chains before ordering us to follow him. He gripped me tightly, his fingers digging into my skin. Scrutinising him was easy at this close contact. He was nice and warm, but something was setting me on edge. Whether it was his familiar, sharp brown eyes, or the unsettling grimace he held in place. His hair was a dark brown, almost black in places, and something niggled in my mind.
I shook the feeling away. Not the time to want to delve into a vision or deep thought. I needed my wits about me.
We stepped outside into the freezing air and I shivered, the icy wind causing snow to fly in all directions. I turned my head into the wolfman's chest to avoid my face being beaten. My hair was flying wildly and kept smacking him in the face.
"Tie her damn hair back, Jay." He spat.
The female named Jay pulled a hair tie from her wrist and yanked my hair into a ponytail at the back of my head. I had to bite my lip to stop laughing, finding amusement despite the chaos going on around us. Who knew hair could rile up the enemy so much?
Jay gave me a once over before nodding. The strange man holding me curtly nodded in return as he stepped deeper into the snow. Master was only a few paces before us, walking slowly and carefully. If he was a wolf, his hackles would be raised.
"Where are we going?" I asked.
Wolfman growled at me, tightening his grip on my body. I winced as his fingers dug bruises into my skin, his claws elongating as we came to a stop behind Master. I had thought that the masked people couldn't hurt me, going by the main masked man that catered to me, but this one didn't care. I weirdly hoped that the original masked man would hold me instead; wolfman was harsh.
"None of your business." He spat.
I flinched as his saliva hit me in the face. Talk about gross. Lifting my hands to wipe it, the silver hummed against my face. I stayed quiet after that, wondering how I recognised his voice and his sneer.
"We need to get to the gate." Master whispered; his voice almost lost in the wind.
The surrounding people nodded, and I was jealous of the masks that covered their face from the harsh weather. We all tiptoed around the corner, the snow crunching quietly beneath us. Everyone breathed steadily, their bodies working overtime to keep them warm.
From what I read in Phoenix's pack library, vampires did not feel the cold and blended in well with their pale skin. Werewolves were also adaptable to the environment because of their higher body temperature. And that was only so they could fight of diseases, give their body more energy, and therefore strength and speed.
I was envious. This environment did not suit my hardly clothed body. I had said before how I wanted to see snow, but this was putting me off it. My toes were numbing and my lips were shaking. I have never been so cold; I thought the cell was cold! This was something I did not want to witness again.
Too deep in my mind, I didn't notice we came to a stop. Looking up from my hands, I tuned back into my surroundings. Trust me to get deep in thought. I even warned myself not to.
Growls, shrieks, and cries of pain filled the air and Master had us halted behind a nearby wall. With my human ears, it was loud, which meant it was close. Looking around, I noticed we were in an alley no wider than wolfman's body.
"The gate is thirty yards away; we need to run." Master growled.
"But how are we going to get through without them noticing?" Jay wondered.
"We try first. Then we jump. I smell two wolves outside of it, you and Coy will take them down."
Original masked man tensed, and I realised he must be "Coy".
"Jump?" Jay gasped. "It may be easy for you vamps to jump, but I cannot jump that high."
He rolled his eyes. "That is why we are the better species."
She narrowed her eyes at him and crossed her arms. The brief confrontation intrigued me, figuring out that Jay was a werewolf. I did not notice it before, unlike the man holding me, so she must be a lower pack member or have a weak wolf.
I sighed. I missed Celimene....
The guy holding me jostled me, causing me to shoot him a glare. "What?"
"Quiet." He whispered. "People out there will kill you."
My eyes widened, and I looked beyond Master with wide eyes. Who exactly was this so-called enemy inside the borders?
Master gave everyone a stern look before raising his hand. As soon as he dropped it, one of the other two people I was not acquainted with ran forwards. He got to the gate, fiddling with the code on the lock. Everyone was tense as he panicked to open it.
Suddenly, there was a blur of colour and he cried, falling to the ground as a mass of brown fur took him down. I gasped, and wolfman froze. I heard his heartbeat stammer as he stared at the wolf taking down the vampire before us.
The brown wolf was snarling, teeth tearing into the man's limbs. The masked figure fought hard before the wolf tore his head from his body and threw it behind him. It was sickening to watch as the head rolled. Everyone was silent, waiting for the wolf's next move.
But I felt strange. It was like an itch beneath my skin. I stared down at this wolf's deep brown coat, my human eyesight blurry because of the bad weather. I scowled, concentrating on the way it moved as it sniffed around.
The wind was blowing down the narrow alleyway, and I wasn't sure if the wolf would pick up on our scent. But it did. Its enormous head snapped in our direction, a low snarl escaping its mouth.
I gasped, my heart racing in my chest. Drool dripped from its mouth, coated in blood. It covered the once deep brown muzzle, the dark tips of his ears spinning around in our direction.
My head swam, eyes becoming teary from not blinking for so long. The small sound had drawn the wolf's eyes to me and as soon as those brown eyes locked on my own, I knew I would be safe.
"Charlie." I cried.
