Chapter Six

~~~~~~~~~~
The next morning was bleak and cold, a light rain had started that night and when Cody woke up she was drenched in the freezing rain. She shook her self like a dog hoping to rid of the excess rain that was slowly soaking into her father's cloak. She realised that it was pointless to do this for she was just going to get even more wet until the rain stopped.
She looked into the window and saw Tom Bombadill and the hobbits around another fire while she was stuck out in the fridged rain. A breeze was blowing through the clearing cooling the air and rain even more. She slumped against the wall and slid down it into a sitting position. She didn't know why she was here, her family was not known for having adventures. Everyone on their family tree had never gone on an adventure, Cody was the first to ever even leave Hobbiton. The only hobbit she had ever met that had gone on an adventure was Bilbo Baggins when he mysteriously left and then suddenly reappeared with trunks full of treasures.
She was looking straight ahead of her but out of the corner of her eye she caught the movement of something slipping into the forest to her left. When she turned to look it had already disappeared into the trees and out of her sight. She brandished no weapon and knew she shouldn't follow it for it could be dangerous but her curiosity was stronger than her caution and she made a move to go after it. Before she could even make a move to get up singing sprung out of the forest.
"I wish I was on yonder hill
'ti's there I'd sit and cry my fill
And every tear would turn a mill,
is go dtí tú mo mhuirnín slán."
Cody was on her feet after the first few lines and made her way towards the forest where the singing was coming from. When the next lines were sung she was running as fast as she could towards the tree line.
"Siúil, siúil, siúl a rúin,
Siúil go sochair agus, siúil go ciún,
siúil go doras agus ealaigh liom,
is go dtí tû mo mhuirnín slán."
Cody made it into the dense woods and was following the string of words with her sharp hearing. With each step she got closer and closer to the source of the singing. The forest floor was concealed with a layer of fog and was difficult to see what laid in the way for the ground was littered with tree roots, twigs and other things that could make you stumble. There was also mist in the air making the trees and their leaves glow in an eerie green light. Rain pattered against the leaves that shielded the ground. There were no noises except the splattering of rain and the constant croaking of a frog somewhere in the distance. The singing had stopped and the last words hung in the air as if the mist had caught them and was suspending them in midair. Then it started back up.
"I'll sell my rock, I'll sell my reel,
I'll sell my only spinning wheel,
To buy my love a sword of steel,
is go dtí tû mo mhuirnín slán."
Cody navigated her way through the maze of trees and finally found the singer, it was the woman she had spoken to last night. She had her arms spread out to look like wings and was looking up through the canopy of leaves towards the cloudy sky. She stood in a small clearing that was dotted with wild flowers of different colors. Put together with the fog the image Cody saw looked more like a dream than reality. She hid behind a tree for she felt like she was intruding on something that was not meant to be seen and did not wish to be seen herself.
"Siúil, siúil, siúil a rúin,
Siúil go sochair agus, siúil go ciúin,
siúil go doras agus ealaigh lion,
is go dtí tú mo mhuirnín sláin."
When she had finished she stood in the same position and with out even looking over she called, "Do not be afraid child for you are among a friend."
Cody slowly slid out from behind her tree to stand exposed in front of the elf like woman.
"How did you know I was behind the trees my fair lady?"
She now turned to face Cody, "You're not the only one with sharp ears." she said with a beautiful smile. "And there is no need to call me my lady young one, my name is Goldberry."
"Your singing was beautiful." Cody said not knowing what to say.
"Thank you Cody. I see it in your eyes that you still do not know your longing or struggles"
"I don't know what they are. Can you please tell me Goldberry?" She asked with a hint of confusion in her voice and you could see it in her eyes.
"You will soon see my daughter. Do not fret. Fear not the future for it doesn't exist and never shall. There is only now."
"I don't understand."
"You soon will though. Remember the past Cody and you will find what you seek."
And with that Goldberry danced away into the fog and soon disappeared into the tree.
"Wait! Come back, I still do not understand! What must I seek?" Cody called out, hoping she would come back.
A soft voice whispered in her ear, "What is it that your heart wants? Seek and you will find. Sometimes you just have to open to your eyes and the answer will be there. Some have to look harder to find it and then some have known what their heart has wanted for many years and the years to come. Which of these people are you Cody Proudfoot?"
Cody turned to see who it was who had spoke to her but there was no one there, just empty air.
When she turned to go back she did not know which direction she had come from. Just as she was about to go in the wrong direction the singing continued but this time it guided her out of the forest.
"I wish, I wish, I wish in vain,
I wish I had my heart again,
And vainly think I'd not complain,
is go dtí tú mo mhuirnín sláin."
