Chapter 27
I could feel my phone vibrating, beeping and making noise every two minutes as I sat against my car. The rain was still pouring down and I was positive I was making a lake with the amount of water my dress was collecting.
As my tears slowly calmed down, the ache in my arm became more noticeable and I gasped in pain. I tried to get up out of the cold concrete, but my right foot slipped and I fell again. I let out a small cry and managed to kick out my only heel.
Where had the other one disappeared to? Oh well.... I didn't really care about my shoes right now. All my mind was focused on was on my arm.
I managed to get into my car, heel in hand and that's when I noticed I was shaking and trembling. The tears were still silently falling and I tried to take deep breaths, failing every time.
After a few attempts, I managed to get my phone and dial the number of the one man in my life I knew would never betray me. As the other line rang, my thoughts immediately went to Nathan and I couldn't stop the sob as my broken heart broke even more.
"CLAIRE!" My dad yelled and that's when I finally noticed he had been calling out my name for a while already. "CLAIRE BABY WHATS WRONG!?"
"Daddy....." I managed to whisper through my trembling lips. "I can't...."
"CAN'T WHAT BABY? CLAIRE TALK TO ME. WHERE ARE YOU? WHERES NATHAN?" he demanded. When he said his name, a fresh wave of tears began and I couldn't stop them. I felt emotionally exhausted and my whole body was trembling so bad, I dropped my phone for the second time since I started talking. I could feel no part of my body so I knew trying to turn on the car so I could get the heat on would not work.
"D-d-da.....d-d-dyyy....." I managed to stutter. "I-I-I...mmm... s-sooo..... c-c-c....old."
"Honey? It's mom. Where are you? What's wrong?" my moms voice answered through the line. I closed my eyes for a few seconds as my body begged for me to rest, but her soft voice kept me awake. "Claire. Please answer me!" Her voice broke and I just stared at the phone on my lap. I had no more energy to pick it up or even to answer back. I was too cold, dripping wet and broken to even answer. The last thing I heard as my eyes closed to the darkness were my parents screaming out my name.

I knew I was in a hospital by the constant beep.... beep I kept on hearing besides me. What I didn't know was how I got there.
As all of my senses finally came back, I managed to open my eyes to find the familiar white lights and all the machines that were around me. My throat burned, my body ached and I was so stiff, just moving my head hurt.
I slowly realized someone was holding one of my hands and I turned my head to find the one person I needed to see.
"Mom," I managed to whisper out although it sounded more like a croak. Her head immediately snapped up from the bed and her eyes went wide when she saw me.
"Oh baby!" she cried and grabbed my face. She kissed my face multiple times and then she ran out the door, yelling out my fathers name. I sighed, closed my eyes and took deep breaths of the fresh oxygen the mask was giving me. I heard people rush into the room, but I was too tired to open my eyes again.
"I thought you said she was awake," my dads voice sadly whispered and I slowly opened my eyes. I gave him a small smile as my eyelids fluttered closed and the smile he returned gave me hope. As I started to fall asleep, I felt his lips on my forehead and heard him whisper, "Thank God," before everything went black again.

"What happened?" was the first sentence I managed to rasp out when I woke up some hours later. My mom was still in the room, and my dad was wearing his white coat as he checked the machines besides me before writing everything down in his clipboard. He then sat down on the edge of the bed while he held my hand.
"What do you remember?" he asked me and I frowned. What did I remember? I remembered going to prom, dancing with Nathan, going to the bathroom but then walking away as there was a big line. Then going back to hear..... I faintly heard my heartbeat and my breaths increase as I thought of everything that happened after that. I could hear my dads voice calling out my name, but all I saw was me running in the rain as fast as I could to get away from that lier.
"Claire. Look. At. Me." my dads rough voice seeped through my thoughts. I focused my eyes on him and realized he was holding my head while his face was inches away from mine. "Breathe..... That's right baby girl. Just... breathe." Once I managed to calm down, he wiped away the tears I didn't know were there and he mumbled something to himself.
"What happened?" I whispered again and he gulped before he took a deep breath and moved away.
"When you called me and didn't answer, I knew something was wrong with you so me and your mom got in the car. Call it a dads instinct, but I knew you were hurt so I had to get to you somehow. On our way to you though, you just stopped talking and the silence confirmed my thoughts that something had in fact happened. I drove as fast as I could and when we got to the mansion, I couldn't find you. I asked everyone if they had seen you and no one knew who I was talking about. Nice classmates you have there by the way," he grumbled and I laughed. Or coughed I should say. He smiled but then got serious again when he continued. "Your mother then spotted my car across the street and when we ran closer, I saw you slumped in the drivers seat, pale and blue. When I first touched you, I thought you were dead...." he cried out that word and my mom let out a sob as she cried quietly besides me. "You were so cold and wet that you weren't even shivering anymore. I knew then that you had hypothermia and we needed to warm you up as fast as we could. So I managed to get your hysteric mother to the back seat with you and I raced to the hospital, calling ahead. Once we got here, we managed to warm you up and get you out of danger. But that was three days ago. Since then, you developed a fever and your immune system was too tired to fight so we placed you in a medically induced coma. I got you out of it last night and then here we are, having this dreadful conversation."
No wonder my whole body ached. I've been through everything! As I tried to get into a comfortable position, I flinched as I moved my right arm and then I slowly lifted it up to see it in a brace. "Oh yeah. I forgot about your arm. You somehow sprained your wrist but it was closer to a break then a sprain. I don't know how you managed to contain all that pain. You are stronger than I thought."
I smiled and sighed. I felt two sets of hands touch my good one and I stared at my parents as they stared back at me. I could tell I gave them a scare these past four days. First that dreaded phone call. Then having hypothermia for one day. Then the fever for three. Everyone must be exhausted!
"Oh! Before I forget, Nathan has been calling me asking for you. He came by two days ago and he looked heartbroken. Poor boy was so sad to see you like this honey. Should I call him and-"
"No!" I cried and they both jumped. My mom opened her mouth to continue talking but I shook my head. "I don't want to see him."
"Why not?" she whispered and my dad stood up. I could see his fists clenching and I gulped before I looked away.
"What did that bastard do to you?" he hissed and I let out a sob.
"He lied to me."
