Chapter 16
I wore the matching silver necklace and charm bracelet that Nathan had given me that same day. He kept on repeating that he would go back to the store and buy me something else, -since I had spend more on his- but I rejected his words. "You got me my bear. Just keep on spoiling me with candy for the rest of the school year and we're even."
"Deal," he immediately responded and I smiled. He stared down at his certificate and then squealed like a girl as he bounced up and down in his seat. "I still can't believe it."
"I can't believe you just squealed like a girl," I laughed and he blushed. He literally blushed!
We spent a couple more hours talking and laughing and before I knew it, I was unwrapping all my other gifts as I sat crossed legged by the Christmas tree.
"Did Santa do good this year?" My dad asked over his mug of eggnog. He was failing to hide his smile and I just looked up at him as my foot dangled in the air as I tried to put on one of my fuzzy socks.
"Say something dad?"
"Nothing. Just loving my gift." I rolled my eyes but laughed as he caressed the newly "#1 dad" mug I got him. That was a joke between me and mom -since we cooperated with his gift- but he seemed to like it more than his new set of tools, clothes and shoes we both bought.
"And I can't believe you got me one as well behind my back," my mom laughed as she eyed hers that was sitting next to her gifts. She had gotten a full spa day treatment from me, matching pearl jewelry and a piece of paper from dad. I looked at the paper in confusion as she read it, but when I saw her blush and my dad smirk, I knew I didn't want to know what it was.
"Are you working for New Years?" I asked my dad once the awkward moment was over. He was still smiling and staring at my mom as he turned to face me.
"No. I work in the morning on the 31st, but then I don't go back until the 2nd. Unless there's an emergency, I am all yours."
I smiled and nodded as I grabbed my phone and began to download new music with my gift. One of the songs was halfway done when he spoke again.
"Why don't you play something for us? We need Christmas music in our lives."
I rolled my eyes and sighed at the same time. One look at my mom made my decision and soon I found myself sitting on the bench and strumming some notes. "Don't forget to sing along," I joked and heard their laughter as I began the first song.
It wasn't long until my playing was just background noise as silence overwhelmed us. I was getting close to finishing the third song when my fingers morphed into one of my favorite melodies.
"Angels we have heard on high," I began to sing to myself. I mumbled the words under my breath and jumped a bit when I felt a hand on my shoulder.
"Don't stop singing. We didn't know you could sing," my moms soft voice said from behind.
I shrugged and murmured, "I don't sing. I thought you couldn't hear me."
"Well don't stop just because we heard you. You have a lovely voice."
"Thanks.... I guess."
As the third verse came to a start, I began to sing softly and I felt the atmosphere change. I felt my voice slowly fading away but once it got to the chorus, two voices joined me and I was surprised for a moment. After the shock went away, I smiled and joined them so we could sing the rest of the song together. This was one moment I would never forget.
"Who gave you the necklace? I have never seen you wear it before," my mom softly asked after the hugs and smiles were done. I froze for a second and debated on whether to tell them about Nathan or lie.
"I got it from someone," I finally said and I could feel both of their stares.
"Who?" That was my dad. I flinched slightly and sighed.
"Promise me you won't get mad."
"I don't like this already. It was a boy right?"
"He is just a friend dad. Nothing else."
"Ooohh! A boy!! Why didn't you tell me you had a boyfriend!" My mom squealed, making me flinch. I stopped playing and turned around to face them.
"Mom. He's a boy, and a friend. Don't put those two words together when it's not true. Besides, our friendship is..... complicated. Let's just leave it at that."
"Did he do something to you?" my dad spat and I quickly stood up to hug him.
"No," I half lied. "It's just..... complicated. I don't want to talk about it." He was about to say something else but my mom spoke before him.
"Is he the one who changed you in the first place?"
I stared at her for a couple of minutes and then finally nodded. She smiled, cupped my cheek and kissed my forehead.
"Well I want to meet him."
"What?" I shrieked as the arms that were still around me stiffened. "Why? It's not like we are dating mom! We are just friends!"
"I don't care. I want to meet the man that changed my baby. I need to thank him and I know your dad wants to approve."
"Yeah. I need to approve if it's acceptable to beat his ass. Nobody takes my princess from me."
I smiled when I saw my moms glare directed at him. He sighed after a moment and then looked down at me. "Why don't you invite him for New Years dinner."
"No! You're acting as if he is asking for my hand in marriage!"
"I don't care. I want to meet this boy. If he is your friend, we are going to meet him later on. Why not do it now."
"He has a family. I don't think he's going to want to spent New Years with us."
"What's his name?" I was surprised when my mom said this. I stared at her as I slowly responded.
"Nathan? Why?"
"Nathan what?"
"Ummmm.....Williams. Why?"
She smirked and left us standing there. Minutes later, I heard her on the phone and dad rolled his eyes.
"Your mother and her power. She is calling his mother."
"What?" I shrieked. "How did she even get her number?"
"Don't know. And I don't want to know. Your mother knows how to get things that are impossible to get."
A couple minutes later, she came back smiling and literally skipping with each step. "All arranged. We are meeting his family now and we are all spending New Years together."
I fainted.
