Chapter 1
"Dustian hurry up! We're gonna be late for school!" my friend Sarah yelled from the street.
I groaned and slid into my jacket as I picked up my bag. "We're not gonna be late!"
I ran down the stairs, running into my father as I rounded the door towards the kitchen. "Watch where you're going son. You'll hurt yourself." he scolded.
I nodded and did my best to keep my head from hanging. "I'm sorry. Is mom in the kitchen?" I asked.
He nodded, his 6'3 height making it where he had to crouch slightly in the doorframe. "Get breakfast and get to school. Important day tomorrow, isn't it?"
I nodded. Tomorrow all the eligible kids in my class would find out what they classified as. The basic rundown was this: Fifty years ago, a test had been developed to determine what kind of person you were; a Dom, Sub, or Vanilla. Vanillas and Doms had the most freedom because they could control every aspect of their lives, while specialised Subs like littles and pets required a caregiver, making it very hard to do anything. Which is why I was worried about the test. Every man in my family was a Dom, and my dad was a Master. I wanted to be a writer, and if I ended up being anything other than a Dom, I probably wouldn't even get to go to college.
The only reason I allowed myself to think that I might not be a Dom was because of my small frame, only around 5'6, and the timidness that came with it, both which were aspects of most Subs. Everyone teased me about it, and I was starting to get worried.
I hugged him and ran into the kitchen. "Slow down Dustian! You're not running that late!" my mother said, giving me a stern look. She was two inches shorter than me and had dark brown hair that contrasted with my lighter hair.
"Sorry mom! Really it's Sarah I'm scared of." I said as I hugged her while I grabbed an apple and a strawberry milk.
She smiled and waved me away. "How that girl scares you is beyond me. She's the sweetest thing I know." I shuddered hearing the words. Sarah... Sweet?!
"Bye mom! Love you!" I yelled as I ran out the door. I heard her collar jingle as she waved, but I was already out the door.
Sarah was outside tapping her foot, obviously annoyed I'd spent as long as I had. "Took you long enough. What did you do? Stop for a few episodes of One Piece?"
I shook my head and started walking towards the school that was about six blocks to our left. She walked beside me, her red hair bouncing around her blue glasses. She was an inch taller than me and she still used it to get on my nerves.
"Nervous?" she asked in an Irish accent. She wasn't completely Irish, but the accent still came up every once in a while.
"Of course not. Why would I be? My dream job only requires that I be either a Dom or Vanilla, and there's only a thirty-three percent chance of me failing. What's there to worry about?" I asked her sarcastically.
She rolled her eyes and we heard shouting coming from the house to our left. Zack appeared in the doorframe, opening the door while pulling on his flannel jacket. "Shut up Margret! I'll clean it later!" he said before slamming the door and walking down the drive to meet us.
"What did you not do this time?" Sarah asked teasingly.
"Apparently I didn't take out the trash, and when Patsy tried doing it, she dragged trash all through the hall. But I know I did because I talked with Jason when I did." Zack said as he started walking with us.
"Only one week left Zack. You can deal with her for a week right?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
He looked at me as he feigned being insulted. "Are you saying that I couldn't deal with an annoying bitch for a week? How dare you good sir!" I rolled my eyes as Sarah laughed, reminding me of the fact she was there.
"Let's go or we'll be late!" she said, tugging us along. We let ourselves be dragged, ending up at the school without any one of us being late, even if it was by a few moments.
I got inside and sat down for my first class, art, and started eating the apple. The teacher came in and I downed my strawberry milk, regretting it instantly because it didn't last. I got up and threw the remains away, giving the teacher a look he'd come to know all too well. "Sorry Dustian. We're covering important stuff today. No naps." Mr Austin said.
I huffed and sat back down. Mr Austin was a cool teacher. Unless it was required, he let me sleep in class. Unlike most students, I was constantly tired, capable of falling asleep just about anywhere. My parents joked that I was a dust mite that never left the couch. They'd even made a song...
Mr Austin turned to the whiteboard behind him and wrote out in giant letters 'Classification Test'. Immediately most of the class groaned, me included. The test wasn't until tomorrow, and today was our last day at this school before graduation, so everyone wanted to enjoy it as long as possible.
He nodded understandably. He was a Vanilla, like most teachers. Doms had a reputation for, bad encounters, with students, and Subs tended to let students slip by with too much, making Vanillas the only ones possible for the job.
"I know. I know. I really wanted today to be fun, but we've been putting this off for too long. Now, who can tell me the three main groups possible to receive?"
I couldn't nap, and the last time I'd tried doing it during something important, I'd been grounded for two weeks after I got out of two days in ISS. Seeing nothing better to do, I raised my hand, being beaten by a Romanian kid named David. Mr Austin pointed at him, and he smirked at me. He was an asshole, and a smart one at that. "Dominants, submissives, and vanillas."
Mr Austin nodded. "And what are the four categories of dominants?" Again, David's hand beat my own.
"Masters, owners, caregivers, and regular Doms." he said with another smirk. Mr Austin nodded again and looked around.
"Can anyone besides David tell me the corresponding sub categories? Micha?"
I glanced at Micha, he wasn't an asshole, but he was kinda lazy, so him answering surprised me. "Slaves, pets, littles, and regular Subs." He smiled when Mr Austin nodded.
"Correct. Who can tell me the most populated category?"
David's hand was in the air immediately. "Masters?"
Mr Austin shook his head and looked at me. "Dustian? Do you know?" I nodded, we'd had this conversation a few days ago.
"Pets. The most populated subsection of pets is dogs. Specifically, golden retrievers." I said, earning a few stares.
Mr Austin smiled and nodded. "That's right. Now today, you're going to do a charcoal sketch of yourself in each category. For vanilla, just use a picture of yourself standing. For pet, draw yourself as an animal you feel closely related to. Begin."
I stood up and grabbed a simple canvas and a few pieces of charcoal. I was the worst in this class, but I should be able to do this, at least enough to pass this assignment. I walked back to my seat and Mr Austin placed a hand on my shoulder. "You okay? I know how much tomorrow means to you."
I felt my cheeks warm up as I nodded. Mr Austin was one of the only teachers I trusted. I'd told him most of the stuff I had done that I wasn't supposed to, like when I got drunk during Halloween when I was thirteen, and things that made me upset and worried. "I'm fine."
He gave me a concerned look before taking his hand off my shoulder. I walked back to my seat and sat down, wondering how I was going to do this.
An hour later, the bell rang for the next class and I handed my sketch over to Mr Austin. He stopped us from leaving with a raising of his hand. "There will be a party here in the gym on the afternoon of the graduation. Enjoy your last day here at East High."
I noticed a few faces light up at the idea of a party, but I didn't care too much. If it was anything like the other school 'parties', it would just be a buffet and lecture. I walked out of the classroom, running into Zack.
"Dustian! Watch where you're going!" he told me. I muttered a sorry and started walking towards English IV. He followed behind me because we sat together as long as nobody took our seats.
I made it into the classroom and sat down, him behind me. As I pulled my binder out of my one strap bag, I heard a commotion at the front of the room. I looked up and felt my blood start boiling. My friend Kris, one of the only kids at school who was my friend without making me feel like I owed him something, was getting shoved against the wall by a tall kid with blonde hair who was surrounded by a few more kids with dyed hair. Jocks.
I stood up and Zack grabbed my arm, giving me a look that told me it wasn't worth it. I frowned and shook him off, setting my bag on the table. He sighed and pulled out his phone, probably texting Sarah, before setting it back in his pocket and standing up.
As I walked towards the boys, I caught the end of their conversation. "I've told you! Boko no Pico is gay! Why won't you listen to me?!" Kris shouted at the boys.
"Then that makes it perfect for you then." One of the boys said with a laugh.
"But I'm not gay!" Kris shouted, pushing the boy backwards. I had to give it to Kris, he didn't care that the boy was around 6'2, he was just pissed. When the boy reared back a fist, I realised that I didn't care either.
I grabbed his arm and he turned to look at me. "Class is going to start soon. You should really be sitting down right about now." I said, my voice shaking in anger. The boy must have taken it as fear because he laughed.
"What do you know guys? Kris has a little friend. I bet you feel all big and bad, but you might want to let go of me, or the first punch is going to hit you." he said through a crooked smile.
I felt a smirk building on my own face. Despite what my friends thought, I loved a good fight. "Go ahead and try to hit me."
His eyebrows raised in surprise and he ripped his arm free from my grasp, rearing his fist back again. I sidestepped and held out my foot, letting his momentum carry him over a chair. He stood up, his eyes clouded with anger. "I think you missed." I said bluntly, earning a few snickers. He got up and swung again, making me take a step back to avoid the punch.
I'd spent the past eighteen years fighting with my brothers and sisters, not to mention my cousins, so this jock, who I now saw was wearing a football jersey under his jacket, should be a piece of cake. Especially because of how slow his punches were. I grabbed his next punch in midair and stepped to the side again as I pulled him into the wall. I could finish this fight without throwing a single punch.
His face hit the wall hard, and I heard something crack. Maybe I swung him too hard...
He backed away and I saw blood dripping down from his obviously broken nose. "You little prick!"
"I'm truly sorry. I was trying to make you look better, but I think that might be impossible." I said in mock innocence.
I heard a few 'oohs' throughout the room and I smirked. He didn't find my joke funny though, because he growled and leapt at me. Too easy. I simply backed up and let him face plant on the ground.
It couldn't have felt too good on his nose, because he cried out in pain and jumped up. He was about to come at me again, when a loud voice spoke up. "What the hell is going on?!" Sarah yelled from the doorway, making him stop in his step.
He immediately froze up and started looking around for help, although it seemed his friends had forgotten he existed as they backed against the wall. "Ju-just a fight. Nothing for you to get concerned about."
She raised an eyebrow before walking forward and smacking him, making most of the room jump. "It is when one of my friends is involved. Am I going to hear about another fight?"
He shook his head and she stopped giving him a death stare. What could I say? She was a Porch, and that was scary enough on its own. Then she turned her death stare on me, making me fidget uncomfortably. "And what do you have to say for yourself?"
Summoning as much courage as I could, I looked her in the eye. "I don't like bullies."
She nodded and turned around, walking out the door, as the teacher walked in. "Hello, please take your seats everyone. We've got a lot to do today and WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU?!" Mrs Haney screamed when she saw the bloody mess of the jock.
"I ran into the wall and then tripped when I started heading to the nurse's office. May I please go to the nurse's office?" he asked, making me widen my eyes in surprise. I figured he'd rat me out. Then again, that would mean he'd have to admit to bullying, which the school frowned upon greatly.
She frowned, looking between him and me, probably because I was shaking from the burst of anger I'd just let loose. "You sure? Fine, we'll have someone take your work to the office."
The boy made a hasty exit and we sat in our seats, ready to begin class. "Thanks for texting Sarah. That could've gotten worse if the teacher beat her here." I thanked Zack.
He nodded and pulled out his phone to check the time. "I honestly figured I'd have to step in and save your ass. When's the last time you actually punched someone anyways?"
I felt my cheeks warm up as he put his phone back in his pocket. "Never. I always try and avoid hitting with a closed fist, and so far it's worked."
He gave me a curious look before sitting back down in his seat. Mrs Haney clearly didn't believe the story of him running into the wall, obvious by the glances she kept sending my way. She was one of the few teachers that knew I wanted to be a writer, and my acceptance into my chosen college required a 95 or above in this class.
I knew what she'd say if anyone told her the truth. "You're better than this Dustian. This is not the time to put everything you've worked for at risk."
I quickly got to work on the packet in front of me. I'd almost finished when Zack tapped my shoulder. I turned to them, my annoyance showing on my face. "You coming to the party tonight?"
I grinned. A party thrown by my friends? This ought to be fun. "Sure. But I'm not drinking."
He rolled his eyes. It wasn't the first time I'd said no to drinking, but after waking up a few counties away after a night of alcohol that I couldn't remember, I'd been pretty strong against any drinking. Drugs and smoking were also off my list, earning the title of the group 'mom'.
"Yeah yeah I know. Do you want juice and cookies Mom?" He asked with an eye roll.
"I think soda and junk food should do. Remember, you'll still need a designated driver anyways." I told him, ignoring the eye roll.
He snorted and covered his mouth, making the teacher give us a weird look before turning back to the student in front of her. "You can't drive worth a damn. I don't know why we haven't wrecked yet. Honestly, you're worse than drunken us. Remind me why we don't drive?"
"Because why my driving is sucky at best, at least if we get pulled over I can pass a breath test. Now shut up and let me finish." I told him, bringing my eyes back to my own paper, noticing that I had already finished while I had been talking.
The bell rang, signaling an end to the class. I stood up and handed my paper to the teacher and walked out the door before she could stop me. I started down the hall towards the library, ready for a nap during study hall.
Of course, Sarah was there, giving me a look that said I was screwed. I sat down and placed my head on the table, hoping she'd leave me alone so I could sleep. "Get the hell up dumbass."
I groaned and looked up at her. "No. I haven't been able to sleep all day. Leave me alone." I muttered as I laid my head back down. She actually listened to me, for once, and I managed to fall into a peaceful sleep. Of course it had to be interrupted by the bell.
I woke up and grabbed my stuff as I stood up. "Assembly today?" I asked Sarah, who was already out the door.
"Yeah, so get your ass to the gym!" she shouted over her shoulder. I got up and ran out the door, pulling my bag over my shoulder. It didn't take me long to catch up with her as we walked into the gym and sat down in our section of the stands.
Zack sat down on my left and gave me a look that reminded me of the conversation earlier. "Still not drinking."
He rolled his eyes and turned to face the basketball court. Suddenly Sarah shrieked and ran down the stairs. I didn't even question why as I raced after her. She jumped and tackled someone to the ground, earning a few stares from other students.
"Olivia! Luna! Satan! Whatever your name is, get off! You're gonna damage my clarinet!" Alannah shouted at her.
I was a bit more subtle as I gave her a hug. Her brown hair fell around her shoulders and she was clutching her clarinet case protectively. "Hey Mage. Why are you here?"
The girl we all called ClarinetMage smiled at me and looked at the band director. "I've become a student teacher. I get to work with Mr Hall until my time is completed, and then I can a band director myself."
I hugged her again as Sarah composed herself. "How did you get here then? You told me your mother wouldn't bring you back." Sarah asked.
Mage smiled again and looked towards the stands. "Josh brought me." the Vanilla said. My eyes widened as I followed hers. Seeing Josh next to Zack, I broke into a run and nearly tackled him as I hugged him.
"Skittles! Why didn't you say you were coming?" I asked him.
He smiled down at me. "I'm sorry. I wanted to surprise y'all. Especially Zack." he said, his glasses shifting on his face.
I rolled my eyes at his words. He was a regular sub, and most people had Zack pegged as a regular Dom. Considering the almost flirty conversation between them, I'd already come to see them as a couple. "You still could have told us. We wouldn't have told him."
He smiled and we sat down, Mage and Sarah next to us. The gym was almost full, and it was getting pretty loud. I saw Sarah's aunt first, but I didn't say anything. This was going to get good. "Hey! Everyone shut it! This is an assembly, not break!" Coach Porch shouted, quieting the gym immediately.
Except for Sarah, who smiled. "Hey Charlie!" Coach Porch frowned and sat down, making Sarah smile again.
The principle walked out towards the center of the court, a microphone in hand. It wasn't really necessary, you could hear most noises that were above whispers in the gym. "Hello seniors! As you know, today is your last day at East High, and it's probably been pretty stressful. I was nervous the day before my classification test as well. But I have a surprise for you all! You will not be taking the test tomorrow." I gasped, hearing most of the gym do the same. "It's been rescheduled due to weather." the principle continued, making a smile creep across my face. "You'll be taking it now."
My smile dropped immediately, turning into a look of fear that echoed around the gym. Taking it now?! That wasn't fair! It had been the same for every group of eighteen year olds, you get out of school, and the next day you take the test with exceptions to people who didn't turn eighteen until later. They waited until the day they turned eighteen to take it, but still! Taking it early was unheard of!
"If you'll follow your homeroom teacher, you'll be taken to the testing rooms. Please remain calm, I assure you, you've had enough time to prepare." the principle said as he walked off the floor. A few students were outraged, making a huge fuss, while the rest of us were just quietly getting up and following our homeroom teachers.
Mrs Bailey, my homeroom teacher and quite possibly the best science teacher ever, led us to a room full of stalls. Each stall had a name written above it, and I couldn't help but gulp when I saw mine. We all got in our individual stalls, and I noticed that I couldn't see anything around me except the screens keyboard on front of me.
"You'll have as long as you need to finish the test, although you have to wait to leave until everyone is finished. Begin." Mrs Bailey said and I turned back to the screens.
What is your sexuality?
I blushed and looked around, very glad for the privacy. I typed 'Bisexual' into the keyboard and clicked enter. An hourglass appeared and then the next question appeared.
What category do you hope to fall into?
Easy. 'Dominant'.
What category would you feel most upset about falling into?
I took a moment to compose myself. There was someone connected to this computer, asking me questions and testing my answers. They would be studying everything, even how long it took for me to answer. Before I could stop myself, I'd already typed 'Dominant' and hit enter. It was the truth. Even a Vanilla would be accepted by my family, but if I was a Dom I'd have a lot more responsibility, no matter what. I couldn't handle that. The hourglass appeared again, and I noticed that it stayed for a bit longer before the next question appeared.
What is your favorite animal?
Another easy one. 'Cat or fox'. That's how the test went for about three hours, when a message popped up saying that my results were being calculated. I relaxed into my chair and started counting the seconds. After about forty-five seconds, another message popped up, asking if I was ready to learn my clarification. I took a deep breath. 'Yes'.
Category: Pet.
Petspace: Cat.
You have thirty days to find an Owner before the State will bring you into an adoption center. Thank you for taking the Classification Test.
I sat back in my seat, my breath shortening. No. No! They must have gotten it wrong! I couldn't be a pet! There had never been a writer that was a specialised Sub, ever! I felt my eyes watering as I stared at the screen, my emotions all over the place.
I heard a gasp and a hand on my shoulder. I looked up and saw Mr Austin, his eyes glued to my screen. "I'm so sorry Dustian."
I couldn't respond, my eyes still staring at the word Pet. I should have been happy, or even just content, with my result. The test basically mapped out peoples' brain's, and it wasn't easy to go against your brain. I stood up, my knees shaking. "M-may I go to t-the b-b-bathroom?" I asked, my voice choking.
Mr Austin slowly nodded and led me out of the stall, using his jacket to hide my face from any prying eyes. As soon as I got into the bathroom, I broke. My knees hit the floor the same time tears started streaking down my face. I sobbed quietly, my shoulders shaking as Mr Austin rubbed my shoulders comfortingly. I felt bile building in my throat, and I crawled over to the toilet, throwing up the breakfast from this morning.
When I had finished crying and puking my guts out, I stood up and walked over to the sink, rinsing my mouth out and looking at myself in the mirror. Before I could stop myself, the image of me wearing a collar popped into my head and I felt tears welling up again. I quickly wiped them away and blew my nose before turning to Mr Austin. "T-thank you."
He nodded understandably. "It's okay. Do you want anything to drink before we head back?"
I said the first thing that popped into my head, regretting it immediately. "C-can I get some m-milk?" He nodded again and left the bathroom, coming back a few minutes later with a cardboard carton of milk. I accepted it graciously and downed most of it in a single gulp before throwing the carton in the trash.
"Ready to go back?" he asked, giving me a concerned look. I nodded and he handed me his jacket again. I quickly covered my face and let him lead me back to my stall, my face blushing darkly.
I sat down and watched him leave my stall. I was probably one of the first ones finished, but I had also left the room for a while, so the last few people should be finishing up soon. I used the little time I had to calm myself. There were worse things than being a pet. Littles actually had the worse rights, most of them having to wear diapers because they couldn't control their bodily functions. But still, my parents couldn't find out. I'd be the only male Sub in my family, and that was something they probably wouldn't ever be able to accept.
I heard a phone ding and I looked up to see the stalls sinking into the floor. Mrs Bailey was standing at the front of the room, Mr Austin to the left. "Everyone's finished? That was quick. You are free to head to the cafeteria for lunch. It's a real treat today, tuna salad." she said with a smile. I felt tears on the verge of breaking again. Of course we'd have fish today.
We all stood up and started heading towards the cafeteria, me walking by myself since all my friends were in different homerooms. I walked into the cafeteria and got in line, noticing Josh, Mage, Zack, and Sarah all beating me to our table in the back. It didn't take me long to get my tray, complete with a thing of milk, and sit down next to Josh at the far end of the table.
Everyone immediately turned to me and looked at me expectantly. "I'm not sharing first."
They rolled their eyes simultaneously. "I'm a Master." Sarah said with a smile.
"Regular Dom." Zack said, casting a smirk at Josh, whose face turned a slight shade of pink. "What about you?"
I hesitated and let my head hang. "P-p-pet." I whispered and the table went quiet.
Josh hugged me and I felt tears welling up in my eyes again. "W-what kind of p-pet?" Mage asked, eyeing me with pity that only made me feel worse.
"C-c-cat. W-what am I s-supposed to tell my p-p-parents? What about being a w-writer?" I asked them, my voice cracking.
They all gave me a look that made me sink into my seat. "I don't know Dustian. You want to sign out with us? We're going to get stuff for the party and that might give you a chance to think." Sarah asked. I looked at my watch, 2:14, only about an hour left of school. I nodded weakly and finished off the sandwich and milk. We all stood up and made our way to the office, where we quickly signed out and climbed into Josh's Jeep.
We ended up getting milkshakes and heading home, forgetting the party. I walked into the house, kicking my shoes off at the door. My father was already in the kitchen, watching my mother as she set the table. "Hey Dustian. I heard they rescheduled the test for today. What did you get?"
I hesitated and looked away. "I'm a Vanilla. May I go to my room, I'm not hungry."
My parents looked shocked but they nodded, giving me permission to go to bed. I trudged up the stairs and climbed into my bed, tears starting to fall already. I pulled my blanket up and closed my eyes, not bothering to change my clothes as my eyes closed. My last thought before falling asleep was of being pet by a faceless stranger, and then I was asleep.
5014 words! Oh my God! My fingers are starting to cramp. Full disclosure, Zack and Josh are no together. Zack is straight and the only reason this couple of a thing of because Sarah demanded it. Enjoy your new lover Josh! Did you enjoy the chapter? It might be one of my best ever. Vote and let me know!
