Chapter 1: the encounter *inserts dramatic music*

"Cassidy!" Melissa squealed, peeking around a rack of clothes. "Get over here this instant! I found the perfect outfit for you."

My best friend and I were shopping for "first-day-of-school outfits". I hurried over to where she was standing and saw the outfit she picked for me; a cute light blue blouse (shown above) along with simple dark jeggings. It was perfect, simple, and casual with an aura of confidence. I hugged her tightly.

"It's amazing! I don't know how you always know exactly what outfit to pick. I'm going to go to the changing room," I babbled excitedly. "Bye Mel!"

"Bye Cass," Melissa said, beaming.

After we paid for the clothes, we started towards the food court we always went to after a long shopping spree. As we turned a corner, a lean, muscular figure crashed into me and knocked us both to the ground.

"I am so sorry," I apologized hastily, ignoring the fact that I had just collided into a devilishly handsome man. "I mean you should be saying sorry to me. Right? Wait no. I'm being rude. Oh my- Oof I'm so awkward. Sorry, sorry, sorry!"

He stood up and quickly dusted himself off. Then, he reached out a hand to help me up and our eyes met. My stomach fluttered, and I felt like I'd seen him before.

"I should be the one saying sorry," he smiled politely. "Sorry."

Blood rushed to my face. "You shouldn't be saying sorry! I should. I'm sorry about my rambling. And sorry about being rude. And sorry about, well, stuff. And, I'm, um, Cassidy. Nice to meet you!"

I grasped his hand nervously, and let him pull me up. "I'm Grayson," he said, smiling.

My eyebrows leapt up and my heart skipped a beat. That's how I've seen him before! "Grayson? Wait, you're Grayson Dolan, the famous YouTuber that I'm— I mean Melissa is obsessed with! Ohmygosh, I can't believe it took me so long to recognize you."

Melissa choked on air behind me. "I'm not obsessed with Grayson!" she said. "It's obviously you who is."

I blushed and scowled at her. "Mel!"

"What?" she shrugged. "It's true."

Suddenly, a figure identical to Grayson appeared at Grayson's side. Ethan, his twin. "Did I hear that somebody likes you?" he nudged Grayson, grinning.

I kicked Ethan, probably a little too hard considering the fact that he was, like, a superstar. "Shut up."

"Ow!" he yelped. "You kicked the wrong person! Ethan's over there!"

I faked a gasp and shifted from foot to foot in an apologetic manner.

"Oh, geez, Grayson. My bad! Of course I kicked the wrong person," I said sarcastically. "I have terrible short term memory. I don't remember who was standing where."

Ethan smirked. "Actually, I'm Ethan and he's Grayson-"

My voice shook with laughter. "You-you, I- You believed me?! Have you never heard sarcasm?"

Grayson laughed. "Ethan, I think she knew you were Ethan all along."

"Wait . . . hold up. You weren't tricked?"

I rolled my eyes teasingly. "No! Of course not."

"Dude," he said, looking at Grayson wide-eyed. "That's the first time someone wasn't fooled."

I folded my arms smugly. "Here's the thing," I said dramatically. "I'm smart."

"Let's see about that. What's your math class?" Ethan joked.

"Multivariable calculus," I paused for effect. "I'm in 12th grade."

Grayson gaped at me. "Isn't that a college-level class?"

"Yup!" I said, feigning amazement. "I'm just really smart, y'know?" I suddenly felt a boost in confidence, and me, queen of awkward, flipped my hair at Grayson Dolan, my celebrity crush, sneaking in a wink.

I glanced over at Melissa, who was watching this with an amused expression on her face. She raised her eyebrows at me, and smirked knowingly.

"In 12th grade, I was in algebra 2," Grayson muttered.

I grinned. "Ha! I'm smarter than you!"

I stuck my tongue out at him, the second wonder of the day.

Grayson grinned. "I look better than you though."

"Um, since when?"

"Since always twas I the beautiful one."

"Um, not happening; also, do you want me to kick you?" I threatened him.

"Gray," Ethan cut in. "You don't want her to. Trust me."

Melissa and I talked to the twins for an hour and then the four of us walked to the food bar to grab milkshakes. As we sat down at a booth, my phone vibrated and I checked my texts. Three unread messages from my older sister. Grayson briefly glanced at the screen, and saw me texting Alex.

Hurt flashed in his eyes for a second. It was gone quickly, but I saw it.

"Hey," I touched his shoulder lightly. He let me rest my hand there for a second, and then shrugged it off.

"What's wrong," I asked him.

"Nothing," he said, his voice suddenly emotionless.

I got a new text that said "see you later, can't wait" from Alex. I glanced up and saw Grayson looking hastily away from my phone screen.

"Grayson? Tell me what's wrong." I said.

"I said, nothing!" he snapped. "Besides why do you care anyways?"

My temper rose. "Grayson!"

"Fine," he said harshly. "Why are you giving off such strong single vibes, when you're dating someone?"

I raised my eyebrows. "I'm dating someone?" I asked coolly.

"Well obviously," Grayson barked. "Why else would a boy be texting you, "so excited; see you later?"

"A boy was texting me?" I asked. Then, I giggled. "Are you jealous?"

Grayson glowered at me. He looked like he wanted to kill me. "I don't even like you. Well, anymore."

I sighed. "Alex is a girl, silly. Short for Alexandra. Alex is my sister."

Grayson lowered his head in embarrassment, blushing. "Oh, my bad."

I smirked. "Single vibes, huh?"

"Well, I, um, you did give them off," he stammered, blushing.

"He means he likes you," whispered Ethan rather loudly.

I ducked my head down and pretended not to hear him while Grayson's ears turned pink. He was actually really adorable.

"He's not denying what Ethan said," Melissa observed.
