~(Y/n)'s POV~

I quickly put on the dress my brother got me for my birthday last year. He left before I could wear it for him.

He was returning from a secret mission King Regis had sent him on. Hard to believe he's been gone for a whole year. Noctis, Prompto, Ignis, and Gladio had informed me they were throwing a surprise party for his return. I couldn't hide my excitement and ran down the hallway. I made sure to pick up my dress so I wouldn't step and trip over the hem. I reach the throne room and open the door. King Regis stands with a grave expression and I wonder what has him down. "Your majesty?" I step towards him slowly.

"(Y/n), this arrived for you a few minutes ago." King Regis hands me the letter. The door to the throne room opens and the famous four join us. They felt the heavy atmosphere and their expressions damper. I open the letter and read its contents.

Dear (Y/n),

I must share urgent news. Your brother, Avalos, has passed. He was struck down by Niflheim forces outside of Altissia. We have informed his majesty of him and hope to return for a proper burial. He always talked about how proud he was of his little sister. I'm sorry to inform of such news. He also wanted to give you his necklace to remember him by.

Regards,
Nyx Ulric

I search through the envelope with a shaky hand and pull out the necklace my brother always wore.

I fell to my knees while clutching the necklace to my chest. The letter fell from my hand and fluttered to the floor. Tears cascaded down my cheek as I sobbed my eyes out. "(Y/n)," Gladio calls my name gently. I couldn't say anything or look at him. I don't want him to see me in such a state. Prompto approached me as well and put a gentle hand on my back. "H-he's gone..." I mutter through sniffles. Warm arms wrapped around my body to comfort me. Gladio pulled me close to his chest to calm me down. After what felt like hours, I stopped crying. The four helped me to my room with sad expressions.

"I can't believe it..." Prompto mumbles. I knew they were all feeling the same way. They were all close to Avalos. He served Noctis as a bodyguard but still treated him like a brother. "May I be alone for awhile?" I ask softly. They all looked worried and I could tell they wanted to protest. My eyes met Gladio's worried ones. I knew exactly what he was thinking. He knows about my depression and my attempts to kill myself. Whenever Avalos couldn't be with me, Gladio was there. "Do call us if you need anything, (Y/n)," Ignis said. I nodded slowly and went into my room. I kept my beautiful dress on because I really didn't feel like taking it off. I was hoping Avalos would've been able to see me in this dress. After all, he did give it to me for my birthday.

A knock came from my door, which snapped me out of my dazed state. "Come in..." The door slowly opens to reveal Gladio. He walks in and sits next to me on my bed. He didn't say anything, which didn't shock me. What could he say? Avalos is dead and he isn't coming home. I lean my head against his shoulder to calm myself down. We didn't say a word to each other for a good ten minutes. I decided to break the silence. "Gladio, I'm not going to do anything crazy. I know Avalos wouldn't want to see me by his side so soon." Gladio rested a hand on my head to comfort me. "Just making sure. I don't want you to join your brother yet," he said. I kiss on the cheek which makes him smile.

"I want you to have this." I handed Gladio my brother's necklace. He wore a shocked expression as he took it from my hand. "Why?" He asked. "Avalos always wore it wherever he went. He was planning on giving it to me before my wedding. He wanted me to give it to my future husband. I thought I'd give it to you now." Gladio smiled and put the necklace on. "I never bought I would hear you say that. Does that mean?"

"Yes, I want to stay by your side for the rest of my life," I reply. Gladio gets up and kneels in front of me. He pulls out a small box and opens it slowly. A beautiful ring sat in the center of the box. "I couldn't have said it any better, (Y/n)." He slips the ring on my finger and kisses it. I wrap my arms around him in joy. He wraps his arms around my waist to hold me close. "Avalos would be so happy right now," I whisper. Gladio runs a gentle hand through my (h/c) hair. "He'd be more than happy."
