27) Noctis
~(Y/n)'s POV~
I opened a letter that a servant from the palace delivered. A small invitation was inside the envelope and I was confused why I would get an invitation. "I haven't been to the palace in years. How do they know who I am?" I unfold the invitation and read the contents inside.
Dear Lady (Y/n),
You are invited to the next masquerade ball being held at the palace tomorrow night. I'm hoping this letter reached you, my dear. It's been years since everyone in the palace last saw. I hope to see you at the ball.
Sincerely,
King Regis
"King Regis is too kind," I smile. I gently laid the invitation on my dresser and went to my closet. I chose out a dress and a mask for tomorrow night.
(A/n: Your dress and mask for the ball)
I hung them nicely on the closet door and made sure there was no hole in the dress and the mask was still wearable. I sighed in relief once I learned they were in fairly new conditions. I crashed on my bed and reminisce in old memories of Noctis and I. I fell asleep with a smile on my face.
I woke up the next morning and smiled as my eyes found the invitation again. I picked up a photo album that was sitting next to the invitation. The first page was filled with Noctis when he was a child. The next few pages of were both of us together. We'd always do everything together. The rest of the pages were filled with Ignis, Prompto, Noctis, and Gladio. They always sent me pictures of their travels which I truly am thankful for. The smile on my face didn't waver as I pulled a hidden picture from a pocket in the back of the album. It was a picture that Prompto took when he caught me stealing a kiss from Noctis. His red face made the picture even more memorable. That was the first time I ever got him to blush.
I sat the album back in its spot and began reading a book to pass some time before the masquerade. I finished the book and noticed the sun was beginning to set. "I got so caught up in the book that I didn't notice the time." I flew off my bed and got into my dress. Next, I went into the bathroom and did my hair. Lastly, I put a small amount of makeup on and was ready to leave. I grabbed my mask and left. The palace wasn't far from where I currently live. It was easily a five minute walk. I walked through the front doors and headed to the ballroom. Before I entered, I put my mask on.
The room was filled with people of different status. I wasn't paying attention and ran into someone. "I'm so sorry," I quickly apologize. "Don't worry about it!" I knew that cheery voice from anywhere. Prompto. I gasped and made sure my mask was on properly. He turned and faced me. His cheeks tinted red once he saw me. "I-I... Um..." He stutters. I giggle and his blush deepens. "Still your scatterbrained self, Prom." He gasped at the sound of his name. "Do I know you?" He asked. I know it's been five years and I'm wearing a mask, but I thought he would recognize me by my voice. I guess I was wrong. "Maybe... Maybe not," I tease and wave farewell to him. I weave through the crowd and found Ignis and Gladio by the drinks and snacks. Of course they both are near the snacks and drinks. I wouldn't be surprised if Ignis was trying to figure out what ingredients they used to make everything.
I pushed through more people and I found myself in front of the crowd. People were dancing in the center with smiles. My eyes met a pair of familiar blue ones. Our eyes locked and neither of us looked away. I smiled at the prince and he couldn't tear his eyes off of me. He was the only one who wasn't wearing a mask. The song ended and he stormed over here. "Good evening, Prince Noctis." I greet him with his title so he doesn't know who I am. "May I have this dance?" He asked with a smile. Noctis stuck his hand out and I took it without hesitation. "I'd be honored to dance with you." He takes my hand and guides me to the center of the room. The familiar song made memories flood my mind. This was the first song Noctis and I learned to dance to together.
We started dancing and both of us were in perfect sync. "You are a very good dancer," Noctis compliments. "I would say the same, but the next King must know how to dance whether he likes it or not." He laughed at my comment and spun me around. We didn't miss a beat or a step as the song began to speed up. Noctis lifted me into the air and gently sat me down on my feet. The song was coming to an end and he dipped me. The music ended and our faces were only inches apart. Cheers and clapping resounded all around us. I heard a familiar whistle from Gladio and Prompto's loud shouts stood out. Noctis didn't let me go and stared into my (e/c) eyes. "How?" He asked.
"How what?"
"I only know one person who could execute all these moves perfectly."
"And who is that?"
"(Y/n)."
I noticed the crowd around us was curious at what we were talking about. Noctis moves me back to my feet and doesn't let me go. "Do... You know
(Y/n)?" He asked. I sighed and pulled the prince by the hand. I guided him to the balcony to get away from prying eyes. I leaned against the stone railing and stared up at the beautiful moon. "If you know her... Please, tell me where she is," he begged. I faced him and gently took off my mask. Noctis gasped as he saw my whole face. "(Y/n)..."
"The one and only," I curtsy. Suddenly I found myself in his warm and tight embrace. "I haven't seen you in five years. Where have you been?" He asked. I laid my hands on his back and gently ran my hands over his shoulders. "I never left Insomnia. My parents died and that's why I left. I fell into grief and I couldn't bear to burden you with my problems." His arms tighten around me and he nuzzles his face into the crook of my neck. "There you are!" Gladio's voice barks. I look over Noctis' shoulder and see him along with Prompto and Ignis watching us. "Is this a secret rendezvous?" Prompto asked, wiggling his eyebrows. I stepped from behind Noctis and smiled. "It's nice to see you all again."
Prompto spat out his drink and began coughing. Gladio patted his back to calm him down. "I'm glad to see you received the invitation, (Y/n)," Ignis said. "You must've informed the King where I lived." He nodded and smiled. "You're that girl I ran into! I knew you looked familiar!" Prompto shouts. "You could've said hi to us," Gladio said with crossed arms. "That would have ruined the surprise," I pout. Noctis pinches my cheek and makes me turn my frown into a smile. "Noctis and (Y/n) did dance beautifully tonight," Ignis compliments. Noctis and I begin to blush and Gladio starts teasing the prince. "Dude, I would've loved to have danced with (Y/n)," Prompto said with a grin.
"Maybe next time, Prom," I say. He frowns and runs a hand through his blonde hair. "Let's give them some space." Ignis drags Gladio and Prompto away from the balcony. Noctis and I lean against the stone railing and stare up at the stars. Memories flooded my mind and I could tell Noctis was experiencing the same. A smile graced his handsome face and I giggled. "What's so funny?" He grinned. "Oh, nothing. I've just missed your smile and the time we spent together." Noctis wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me into his chest. He kissed the top of my head and I rested my head on his chest. I could hear his heartbeat racing along with mine.
We stayed like that for a few minutes until Noctis broke the silence. "Did my father invite you?" I nodded and grinned up at him. "He wanted it to be a surprise. Ignis must've told him where I lived and had a servant deliver the invitation. I almost didn't come, but I thought of you and my mind was made up." I pecked him on the nose and grinned. "I think you missed." I rolled my eyes and kissed him on the lips. Noctis' grin grew wider and tilted my head in confusion. "Not enough." He sealed my lips once again with his and this time it was a very passionate kiss. I gasped for air as we pulled apart. A familiar song started playing and Noctis smiled. I began singing the lyrics and Noctis was shocked. I guess he thought I wouldn't remember the song his mother taught me when we were little.
We both began dancing slowly on the balcony in our own world. I kept singing as Noctis guided me through the steps with grace. The moon shone down on us and lit up the balcony. I finished the lyrics and the song ends. We kissed again and got lost in each other's warmth.
