~(Y/n)'s POV~
From the service station, I watched painfully as Prompto flirted with the young mechanic. My heart ached and tore my gaze away from the scene. Gladio stood next to me, crossing his arms as he shook his head. "He's an idiot."
"If he doesn't like me, I won't force him to. If he likes Cindy, let him chase her to the ends of Eos. In all honesty, I don't think she's the dating type. She's married to her job. Prompto's too blinded by the hearts in his eyes to realize that, though."
"Kid can't see what's in front of him. You're better off with findin' a different crush."
"Oh, like you?" I smirked with an arched brow.
Gladio shrugs, "That's up to you, shortcake."
"I'll—"
A sudden splitting pain erupted in my chest. I placed a hand over my heart and winced. Gladio placed a gentle hand on my back, peering worriedly at me. "You okay? You turned really pale all of a sudden."
"E-Excuse me for a moment." I ran to behind the garage and that's when the coughing started. I hunched over, feeling as if I needed to throw up. When something fell from my mouth, I picked it up. It was a blue flower petal.
"A petal?" I was confused as to why such a thing was in my mouth and how I failed to notice it.
"(Y/n), are you okay? Gladio said you didn't look so good."
I nearly jumped out of my skin when I heard Prompto's voice from right behind me. I quickly spun around and dropped the petal. "I just suddenly felt nauseous. I'm fine, Prom."
My words didn't wipe the worry from his face. It only seemed to add to it. "You don't look fine. Maybe we should call it a day and find a motel."
I shook my head. "I promise you, Prom. I'm fine. What happened with your chat with Cindy?"
His worry for me vanished and was replaced by a boyish smile, shattering my heart further. "She had another car to work on and said we could talk later."
I forced a smile. "Well, I'm glad you and her are getting along."
His cheeks burned brightly. "Yeah. I'm gonna try and ask her out the next time we're here."
That was it. The final nail in the coffin. I could feel my already shattered heart break into even more pieces. My smile fell and I bit my lip. "I... I hope it works out."
I walked past the boy and returned to where I had left Gladio. The shield saw me and casted his concern towards me. "Feel any better?"
I looked away, refusing to meet his amber gaze. "I feel worse than before."
"What did Prompto say to you, (Y/n)?"
"Let's just say... I never knew a broken heart could shatter even more."
Gladio frowned, "(Y/n), if you—"
"No, let him go. If he can be happy, that's all I need."
The brute sighs, "You're too kind for your own good."
I fell silent, burying my hands in my lap as I sat on the hood of the Regalia. Noctis and Ignis returned from shopping and we hopped in the car. We waited for Prompto before departing to Wiz Chocobo Post in the Duscae region.
Fifteen minutes later, we arrive and exit the vehicle to talk to the man himself. "If y'all are willin' to help this ol' geezer, could ya deal with a problem of ours? You're the only hunters I trust to take the hunt."
"What's the problem?" Noctis asked.
"A giant behemoth has been roaming these parts and the birds are frightened. We can't let them out 'til Deadeye is dealt with."
"Could use the gil," Gladio said.
"We've faced a behemoth before. Let's take down another one!" Prompto shouts. I went to speak up, but the same pain I felt earlier resurfaced. This time, it escalated and I fell to my knees, clutching my chest. The blonde was the closest to me and fell to his knees beside me, checking over my body. "(Y/n), what's wrong? Are you hurt?"
"N-No, I'm fine..."
"It's the same pain you felt in Hammerhead, isn't it?" Gladio asked. I nod and get back on my feet with help from Prompto. He refused to let go of me even when I was fine.
"While you guys go hunting, I'm gonna stay here. I'm a little dizzy," I confess.
"(Y/n), do you require a curative?" Ignis offered.
I shook my head. "No, you'll need them more than me. I'll be here when you guys return."
Prompto kept an arm around me and guided me to a nearby table. He placed a caring hand on my head and stroked my (h/c) locks. "We'll be back soon, (Y/n)."
"Be careful, Prom."
He sends me a glistening smile and nods before leaving with the others. The urge to cough again rose in my chest and I covered my mouth. When the first wave came, flower petals spilled from my mouth. The same pale blue petal I saw at Hammerhead has multiplied drastically.
"How ya doin', honey?" Wiz asked as he took a seat next to me.
"Not good," I replied groggily, looking at the petals. "Wiz, do you know any disease that involves flower petals?"
"I know only one—the hanahaki disease. The symptoms are coughing up flower petals. The only way to contract the disease is by unrequited love."
I tightened my hands into fists. "Is there a cure?"
"Either surgery if it isn't too far along or the person you love has to reciprocate your feelings," he answered. "Deary, by the amount of petals I just saw, your only option is the second one. Who's the lucky gentleman?"
"Prompto. I've liked him for some time, but he likes a mechanic named Cindy. I don't stand a chance against her," I respond, trying not to burst into tears.
"(Y/n), you've gotta talk to him," Wiz said, patting me on the back.
"Maybe I—" Another wave of coughing took over my body. Instead of just petals, blood erupted from my throat. My vision was failing me and I felt my body falling. The sound of Wiz's worried voice was the last thing I heard before everything went black.
~3rd Person POV~
"Do you think (Y/n)'s really okay?" Prompto asked worriedly.
"Hell no. She's just tryin' to put up a front," Gladio snarls.
"Maybe... Maybe one of us should've stayed with her."
"If something happens, Wiz will—" Noctis' phone suddenly rang, silencing him and the others. He picked up and heard the desperation in Wiz's voice as he shouted into the phone incoherently. "What happened?"
"(Y/n). She needs y'all right now. Forgot about the hunt and hurry back!"
Noctis hung up, fear painted across his face. Prompto saw and stepped forward. "I heard (Y/n)'s name. What's wrong?"
"We need to hurry back to the outpost."
Prompto's eyes widened as he took off without the others. He ignored their shouting and ran all the way back to the outpost. He was completely out of breath when he searched around for Wiz and (Y/n). He was able to spot the older man on the ground, his back facing him. Fear coursed through Prompto's body as he approached the rancher.
When he was about to call out to Wiz, Prompto caught a glimpse of (Y/n). He tripped over his own feet as he ran the rest of the way and slid to his knees next to Wiz. Blood and flower petals covered (Y/n)'s body as she laid in Wiz's arms. "(Y-Y/n)?" He called out in a shaky voice. The boy took her body out of Wiz's arms and into his. Her skin was deathly pale and cold to the touch.
"W-What's wrong with her?" He asked.
"A broken heart, son. One that seems too late to heal," he sighs sadly.
"N-No! We can save her! I-I can't lose her!" He lifted her up further in his arms and hugged her limp body closer. He buried his face in the crook of her neck, praying to the Astrals for dear life. Her blood covered the front of his shirt, but the boy didn't care a single bit.
After finding no signs of life, Prompto lifted his head and kissed her on the lips. Tears slipped from his cheeks and pelted her cold skin as he pulled away. He leaned his forehead against hers, his bottom lip quivering.
Prompto was about to get up, but when he heard (Y/n) gasping for air, his hold on her tightened. Her (e/c) eyes opened slowly, revealing the life back in them. "Hey, Prom. Why're you here?"
Prompto continued to cry as he embraced her, rocking her body back and forth gently. "You're okay... You're okay!"
"Why wouldn't I be?"
The sharpshooter pulled back slightly. "(Y/n), you almost died. Blood and flower petals were everywhere when I ran back here. Wiz called Noct and told him what happened."
"Wait, if I'm alright..." She lifted her body and glanced towards Wiz.
"Darlin', your love isn't unrequited. If it was, the kiss wouldn't have worked," the man said with a gentle smile.
(Y/n) tilts her head to the side. "Kiss? What kiss?"
Prompto blushed, biting his lower lip before answering. "I-I may have kissed you..."
"Does... Does that mean you love me?" She asked, hope brimming from her eyes.
"(Y/n), I fell in love with you years ago. I gave up awhile back because I knew I wasn't the one for you," Prompto frowns.
"Don't I get a say in who's the one for me?" She asked.
"Of course! But... I'm not good enough for you."
(Y/n) grabbed him by the collar and pulled him into a deep and passionate kiss. Prompto's eyes widened in shock before he closed them as he fell into the beautiful embrace of ecstasy.
With the passionate kiss causing the lack of oxygen, the two pull apart and gasp for air. (Y/n) released Prompto's collar and sighed. "You're an idiot."
"Wha—hey!"
"I love you, Prompto Argentum."
The boy smiled from ear-to-ear. "I love you, too, (Y/n)."
