"Look, Mister Barnes. I'm not a bad person. But sometimes, doing bad things, things that I don't like, can keep people safe. Isn't that what you want as well?" I didn't bother to move an inch, still staring at the wall.
Director Nick Fury was sitting outside of my cell, trying to get some kind of reaction out of me. I could really care less about his need to keep people safe.
What kind of people did he mean? People like Bucky who had fought for my freedom? People like Hydra agents who had never even told me what freedom was, or from civilians who were in between me and my freedom?
It must have been the latter option.
"Atlas, they called you that. Who named you? As far as I know, Hydra usually puts numbers on their pets." Loki did. I wanted to say, but I wasn't feeling like talking, and so far, the man had remained outside of my cell, in a safe distance.
"Do you know what crosswords are, Atlas?" I perked up at that, crossed words? "It always fascinates me how after reading a definition you can squeeze the word into a box. But how many words can there be for one definition?" that was complicated talk.
Out of curiosity, I turned around, still laying on the ground that oddly, wasn't that cold at all. Director was sitting his back towards me, scribbling something down on a paper. I pushed myself up, not making a sound as I snuck closer to the figure "I'm having trouble with eyesigh, mind reading that word for me, Atlas?" I squinted my eyes, bending closer to the glass wall and the bars that separated me from the definitions of a prisoner and a free person.
I tilted my head, only letter I could rego nose were T and A as Loki had taught. He shuffled with the papers. "Here, mind trying this one?"
"В те дни, когда мне были новы Все впечатленья бытия -" the words left my lips with ease, and I recognised every word. The man snapped the book shut, closing my view of the sheets written in language I understood perfectly. I blinked in daze, taking a steb back as the man stood up, breaking his laid back facade as he looked down at me with narrowed eyes. "Russia? Former Sokovian? Ukraine or Slovakia? Where are the bases hidden?" I tilted my head, not breaking the eye contact as I stared at him back.
I did not know the answer, in fact, I didn't know I could even read and understand that... Language. Something in his ear buzzed, statistic voice asking his attention in the upper grounds due to system errors. The man simply told them to figure it out, cutting the line through the earpiece as he sighed. He seemed to be quite stoic person, which I oddly liked. It felt safe, safe area. I was used to that. "I suggest you start remembering. By the looks of it, we are starting to run out of time, Atlas. The sooner you remember, the sooner you can help your friends." The dark skinned man said seriously, giving me one more emotionless glance as he silently turned around and walked out as if he owned the place. Which made me believe that he did. My eyes landed on the person analyzing me from the opposite cell. The man had tattoos covering his bald head, hands and neck as he sneered at me. "Welcome to Raft, you bastard. Have fun while they keep cutting your fingers off and pulling your teeth out. You better start remembering." the man chuckled, flashing his fingers, or the lack of thereof. I turned around from the laughing maniac. Knowing those kind of people were not to be messed with. They were either going to die soon or become someones puppets.
I laid on the same corner as I had been in before, my eyes glued to the ceiling.
Remember, remember, remember! I tried to dig around in my memories, tried to find a lead. Yet, all I could remember were Loki's mischievous green eyes, Pietros blue hue as he kept running everywhere and even slight snippets of Bucky. Thoughts of Bucky made me scoff and cross my hands as I tried to make myself more comfortable on the hard ground. Of course there was a bed, I did not bother to use it thought. Too comfortable.
I gritted my teeth, trying to see beyond the people I knew from The Avengers tower. Tried to push the darkness away. To lure the memories of my earlier life forward. "Project Beast." I frowned through the haze. Holding my breath as I started feeling the memories coming through, almost. "Project Beast!" That was no longer a memory. I snapped my eyes open, jumping on my feet into crouched position as I looked at the person standing before my cell dangerously.
I held my breath, afraid that if I were to breathe I would get one of my episodes as I watched the man looking at me disappointingly, . "steh gerade, Beast." the nameless man said, he had a hint of an accent to his raspy voice as he made my body obey the command. I did not understand the fear that took a hold of me when I looked at the man. For some reason, even the beastly instincts in my body did not want to investigate the colors of the mans mind. Behind him, a nervous looking man looked around, I recognized him immediately by the four claw mars on the side of his face. Master Gavin. "I am disappointed, Asset. You have failed us quite a bit." he said steadily, making me clench my hands as I tried to keep them from trembling. Yet, my face was void of emotion. Men in black uniforms shot the large wall that had stopped humming, making it fall into billions of pieces without damaging the man with dangerous eyes or me. "bewegen, Beast. You have a lot to make up for. Gavin, go and make sure our lift is ready to take off."
"Of course, Budnikov."
