I didn't move after the Avengers —as they introduced themselves— had filled us in with the information they thought was necessary. Of course, I could just tell there were details they kept to themselves.
Pietro was quiet, which was unusual for him. Considering the information Steve had told as gently as possible, it still must've been a lot to the Speedster.
Because comes out, the woman named Wanda was Pietro's sister. He refused to meet her bright eyes that were staring intensively from across the room. I stared at Wanda, trying to see the resemblance between the siblings, I could feel the coldness she held towards me. I didn't mind.
“Look, Pietro, it might be a lot to take in right now, but just-”
“Who are you people?” He cut in, his icy cold eyes looking up to Steve. “We are called the Avengers. We do our best to keep the world safe.” Pietro raised an eyebrow. “Me and Atlas did our research. So, what, are you like, trying to win over Hydra or something?” I could feel the instant tension, mostly from Bucky who was sitting next to me. “No, we want to make Hydra extinct. They have done awful things, things that are hard to repair.” Steve's soft blue eyes rested on me for a second, making me feel uneasy. “and that's why you two are here. We are keeping you safe from Hydra. They will no longer torment you.” he wasn't telling it to only me and Pietro. But to Bucky as well.
I narrowed my eyes, giving Steve a challenging look, making him widen his eyes in surprise. “if you say that, you have to promise me something.” Pietros tone went serious and I could see the tiredness behind his guarded, usually cheerful eyes. “Anything.” Steve said, looking the Speedster straight in the eyes. Even Wanda took a step closer, making me look at her way in suspicious manner. She did try to kill me after all.
“Whatever is going to happen, because knowing Hydra, something will, I want you to promise me you will not let them have Atlas. They... Just, they can't have him. Give me your word, Captain.” he said, his accent thickening. I looked at Pietro, frowning at him. “Of course, we'll watch after the kid.” to my surprise, the woman who had been silent most of the time piped in. “and you too, Pietro. You will stay here, you will be safe here.” she said, the white haired man didn't even glance at her way. She was hurt by it, trying to mask her sadness with glare that she sent towards me.
“Okay, I think it's enough for one day. So, erm, where are our rooms or cells or wherever you think you could be housing us?” Pietro asked standing up, grabbing my shoulder to drag me up with him. “Sure, I'll show you to your rooms and did he say your name was Atlas? I thought I heard Loki mention this name, didn't know it was yours.” Steve said, surprising me when he had turned and spoken straight with me.
Pietro decided to help me out with my lack of response. “yeah, his name is Atlas. Loki? Who is Loki?” I snapped my eyes in the dark corner where gentle scoff announced the displeased Gof of Mischief. “I am Loki, and you shall not speak my name in such tone, mortal.” he said emotionlessly, yet I could sense annoyed undertone.
“oh its you! Atlas' friend who freed us, thanks by the way, that was cool what you did back in the base.” after Pietro had mentioned Loki freeing us, silence has fallen in the room. Yet, with rising questions and confusion, there was a sly smirk on Loki's lips. Deep down I tried to remember the flashing green eyes somewhere, freeing us. Yet there was only dark hole in my mind. I couldn't remember the God of Mischief ever helping us, only the part where he had entered my mind and pulled me out of my deep slumber.
Buckys eyes that had been studying Pietro before, were now bewildered.“Loki... Freed you? The same man who is burning holes in Steves phone right now? That Loki?” he asked, his voice uncertain. Pietro nodded.
“oh why, why didn't you tell us before Loki! You knew, all this time you knew!” Wanda screetched, sending a ball of red towards the empty space the god had been sitting just seconds ago. He was still in the room, i could sense him. He was amused.
Come on, Atlas, don't give out my hiding spot now.
I won't.
I assured the God as my eyes lingered on the tip of a snakes tail that slowly disappeared in the shadows, nobody else seemed to notice.
“Wanda, you need to rest. Pietro, I'll show you to your room and Atlas, doctor Banner wishes to do some last minute check ups if you're alright with that?” Steve asked me, standing up as well m, his eyes vary as they peeked at fuming Wanda.
“what? Hell no, I thought you said you weren't like Hydra?” Pietro accused Steve, getting defensive as his shoulders tensed. “we're not.” the man with metal hand growled on my left, he was offended.
Oh boy, if I have to be in this tension filled room any longer I swear I'll kill them all.
That's not that bad of an idea, I could even help you if you wish. But considering you can turn yourself into a dragon, I don't think my help is necessary. Loki's amused tone willed my head.
“Of course we're nothing like them, Pietro. It is simply for his own good. To make sure he is recovering and healthy.” Rogers said reassuringly, looking down to Pietro who had a look of suspicion. “that's what they kept saying, but I'm willing to trust you in this one. But I'm coming along, and if I as much as suspect that you're going to do something, I'll snap your neck like a twig.”
“Understandable.” Steve smiled, heading towards the door, Pietro following. Bucky however, didn't like the threats. But he kept his complaints to himself. I followed the two into an elevator, ignoring Bucky as he yet again tried to make eye contact, tried to say something. But he remained silent.
As the doors of elevator closed, and I was locked in the small room with three other people, I could feel a flash of pain.
Laughter, hissing of doors closing as I was tightly locked inside a box that was too small, too hot and lacked of oxygen. I tried to crawl out, tried push the walls away but the darkness was on my way. It always was.
Startled, I felt someone's heavy hand rest on my shoulders and I was back in presence. I shrugged Bucky's hand off and speed walked out of the elevator, catching up to Pietro and Steve who were quietly conversing, seemingly having forgotten the tension filled chat earlier.
“What did you see?” Bucky's quiet voice asked me as he leaned closer. I met his eyes for a brief second, warning him to back off. He didn't listen, his blue eyes hardening. “I know that look, and I know that you can talk. Because you have, you spoke to me so much I thought you'd never shut up. And now here we are, me trying to get a word out of you and you silently judging everyone. So, tell me Atlas, what did you see? What can you remember?” I turned away from him, gritting my teeth.
I hated it. Hated that I couldn't remember anything, yet he knew me. He knew that I spoke. So, why did it feel like my throat was closing in whenever I took in a deep breath to utter one word? Why did it make me flinch whenever I made a smallest of sounds?
Why couldn't I be normal?
