May POV
I wake up to the sun burning down on my eyelids.
I flicker my eyes open fully and feel my body isn't cuddled up against anyone. I look over my shoulder and see Harry isn't in bed.
I sit up confused for a moment and itch my head. He usually always tells me when he's leaving for work or something. Or even if he's going out on a jog.
The bedroom door is soon opened with Harry behind it. Sweat is dripping down from his forehead.
"Good morning." He offers.
"Morning." I say softly. "When did you leave?" I ask.
"Around seven." I glance to the clock and see it's 9.
"Why didn't you wake me?" I ask curiously.
"I didn't know I needed too." He chuckles. He peels off his shirt and tosses it into the hamper. Harry soon walks into our bathroom and closes the door behind himself. I take a long deep breath and fall back onto our mattress.
My mind goes to the small black box I found years ago. When I tried looking for it again, it wasn't there. I still wonder what what is in the box and why he has it.
I slip out of bed moments later and head to my closet to grab something to wear. I have to run errands today.
I grab my leggings hanging up and grab a navy blue shirt. I close the closet door and see Harry walk out of the bathroom. The hot fog from the shower exits as well.
"Where are you going?" He asks.
"I'm going to run errands. Food shop and pick up your dry cleanings."
"The kitchen is the first thing getting redone so it would be best if you didn't go food shopping."
"We'll just live on fast food for months?" I ask curiously.
"Or we can live in an apartment until the house is done." My head tilts.
"Was that the plan all along and failed to mention it?" I ask curiously.
"Not exactly, but it's an option." I bite my lip.
"I don't think we should waste money on an apartment for a few months when we have a house." I say while slipping on my shirt.
"It's not like we don't have the money." I stare at him. "So is that a yes? I have an apartment in mind."
"You already went looking for one?" My eyebrows furrow.
"Eh, for fun once." I cross my arms. He gently kisses my cheek. "You'll love it, okay? I gotta go to the office but I'll text you the address and I'll meet you there at five?"
"You said you were off today." I say as he buttons up his shirt. "Wait, you already put the down payment on the apartment?"
"Surprise." Harry smiles gently. "I don't need to stand around the house as people work on it. I might as well work. I'd rather you have you out of the house as well while they're here."
"Why?" I ask.
"Reasons." He fixes his tie.
"We're still going out tonight?" I ask.
"We had plans?" My heart burns and my eyes sting. I look to my feet and bite my lower lip. "Oh, shit yeah. Sorry. Uh, yeah sure if you want to go."
"No, it's fine. We don't have too." I sit on the mattress and slip on my socks.
"If you want to go out we will, okay?" Harry kisses my lips quickly. "I gotta go, but I'll meet you at the apartment building at 5, and we'll go to dinner."
"Okay." I say softly. He kisses me again and leaves our bedroom. I just continue to sit down and play with my fingers.
***
I arrive to the apartment building at 5. Harry is standing up front. His back is against the building and he's typing on his phone. Soon his eyes peer up at me and he smiles gently.
"Hey baby." He gently kisses my cheek. "Ready?" I nod.
He takes my hand in his we head to the front door. This place is so fancy there is a door man. I smile politely at the man. He tips his hat at me and smiles back. He looks about 60.
Harry and I step into the lobby. I feel so under dressed from looking at the decor and the people walking about. "You couldn't smile at the man?" I ask my boyfriend.
"He gets paid to open doors for us." I feel my heart sink. He walks me over to the elevators and I step in hesitantly.
~
Harry unlocks the door and we step in. My eyes widen automatically at how the whole apartment is already furnished.
"When did you do all of this?" I ask him. My voice low.
"Month or two back." I stare at him. "Nice right?"
"Harry," I pause.
"This is only temporary until our house is done. And the house will look 10 times better than this apartment."
I don't know how to really describe how this apartment looks.
It looks like a fucking pent house that costs 3 grand a month.
His phone starts ringing. He takes out his phone and tells me he'll be a minute. I nod and start to wander about.
Why can't he tell me anything? Everything is a fucking secret with him.
I look out the window the apartment provides and it is a lovely view of Seattle. I smile gently. "May, I gotta run to the office real quick." My heart sinks. I turn back around and look at him.
"Harry-"
"I'll be 30 minutes tops. This is really important. And I promise I'm all yours the rest of the night." He kisses me. "Okay?"
"Okay." I murmur softly. He kisses my cheek and leaves.
Once the door shuts I let out a deep breath. I sit down on one of the many couches and play with my bottom lip.
***
The sky is dark now.
So dark.
My eyes look out the window and stare at the city lights. My arms are crossed over my body and I bite my lower lip.
He left at 5:20.
It's currently 9:45.
In my mind all I picture is my younger self sitting on my bed waiting for my Dad to come home to take me to the Father daughter dance.
I wipe the corner of my eyes and take a deep breath.
He could've texted.
Or called.
Emailed.
Anything really, I'm starving.
I hear the door open then shut. "May?" I hear Harry's voice call. I don't say anything. "Hey, I'm sorry the meeting ran late and they started bull shitting and I lost track of time. I brought you back something to eat." I turn around.
"So, I'm assuming by you lost track of time as after the meeting you went to get drinks with the guys and forgot we had plans?" I ask. Harry remains silent. I just look to my feet. "If you didn't want to go out you could've told me."
"I forgot, okay? I'll make it up to you." I keep quiet. I lean down on the couch and grab my keys. "Where are you going?"
"I'm going out."
"Where?"
"To get something to eat, by myself." I slip on my coat. Harry grabs my hand.
"May it's almost 10 it's not safe."
"Well, I have pepper spray in my purse. I'll be fine." I mutter.
"Please, just stay home. Tomorrow we'll go out for breakfast, yes? Or brunch."
"I have my internship at 10." I say. He lets out a deep breath. "I'll be back whenever."
"May." I leave the apartment and walk down the hallway. A tear slips from my eye and I quickly wipe it away.

"Thank you." I say to the man who opens the door for me.
"Of course Ms." I smile gently. I pull out a ten dollar bill and hand it to him. "Oh no, that's not necessary."
"I assume not a lot of the snobby people here say thank you, or tip, so enjoy your tip." I smile warmly.
"Thank you Ms."
"Of course," I pause and read his tag. "Mr. Henwill."
"Please, call me Barry. What's your name?"
"May." I say. "Evans, since I know your last name." Barry smiles.
"Well, May Evans, thank you for making my night and or week."
"And thank you for holding the door open for me."
"Of course ma'am. May I ask you why are you out at this time of night by yourself?"
"Uh, I'm going out to dinner." I say with a soft smile.
"Well, I hope you keep safe. A lot of these snobby men like to flirt with pretty women like yourself even if they're married."
"I'll keep that in mind as they slip heir hand into their pocket." Barry laughs. "Have a lovely night Barry."
"You too Ms. Evans." I walk to my car in the parking lot and soon get in.
Me: dinner???
Adam: sure, where?
***
"Wow, two days in a row we're hanging out." Adam comments as he sits in front of me in our booth.
"Ha ha." I fake laugh. I sip my water.
"So," Adam stares at me. "What's wrong with you and Harry?" The mention of his name makes my head pound.
"What isn't wrong with us?" I laugh to myself. "He's just...different."
"Define different."
"We were supposed to go out to dinner tonight at 6. He stood me up because he lost track of time while getting drinks with his business buddies." Adam's head tilts at me. "He throws money on random shit we don't need like new hand towels that are 300 dollars. That money can be used on something else." I sigh.
"Have you talked to him?"
"I hinted to him on acting different and he brushed it off." My fingers fidget. "When I was dating him in high school I remember thinking about the house we might have. I was thinking of a split ranch, because I always liked those. We would have a big yard with a white fence and we'll have a pool or something with a swing set. And two big dogs." My eyes start to tear up.
"But, his idea of a good house is a big, fancy, rich house with an in ground pool, hot tub, and a lots of land. No fence because our house is far away from other houses. We have a lot of bedrooms for only two people, and I can't adapt to that life style."
"It's not a bad life style." Adam comes up with.
"It's a rich life style, and I'm not rich. I didn't grow up going to Italy every summer. I would be fine with living like this if he wasn't such an ass hat." I drink my water.
"Why don't you talk to him? Like sit down and talk to him?"
"You know we don't say I love you anymore." I bring up. "It's been four months. I'm scared if I say it he won't say it back."
"Look, if you both don't love each other I might as well break up with Justin. You guys prove that through thick and thin you'll stick by one another." I let out a deep breath. "He got a ring for you that must mean something."
"The ring isn't on my finger, Adam. And it's been four years." He sips he root beer awkwardly.
***
I walk into the apartment. It's almost midnight and I have to get to bed.
I walk past the living room and stop once I see Harry. He's standing up and running his hand through his hair roughly. "You're still up? I'm surprised."
"I-I wanted to make sure you came home." He walks over to me. His hand reaches for mine but I move.
"I'm going to bed." I say.
"May please-"
"I'm not in the mood to discuss your excuses with you now. I'm going to bed." I dismiss.
"I'm sorry."
"Yep." I slip off my shoes. and head down the hall. Open the bedroom door and realise I forgot all my clothes in my car.
I slip out of my jeans and go to bed in my shirt and underwear.
I lay in the queen sized mattress and feel the emptiness float in my chest. Since April passed I haven't slept alone.
So, this is my first time in four years without Harry beside me.
I don't like it.
