Seventy Two
May POV
Harry went to the store to pick up something his Mom needs.
He called the supermarket first. They're only opened for another hour.
So, it's me, Baxter, and Finn.
I'm living with all boys.
I head to the dining room with the new puppy in my arms. He's pretty calm.
I kiss the top of his small head and rub behind his ears. I see a fairly large box on the table. It's in a brown shipping box.
My eyebrows furrow.
I put the puppy on the ground and he runs around the house. An amused smile goes on my lips.
I check the shipping label and it's to me. I grab a knife from the kitchen and cut it down the tape in the middle.
Inside the brown box is a book. My eyebrows furrow.
I take the box out of the big box and see it's one of those scrap books for babies. I'm so confused.
I open the book and see a note inside.
Dear May,
I wanted to send you this scrap book I made of you when you were born to whenever I was allowed to see you last. I figured once you had kids of your own, or you were married, you would want to share these things with them. Or maybe you just wanna see what you were like as a little kid if your Mom never told you; which is likely.
There are a few DVD's as well in the book which you can watch if you please.
Enjoy x
~Uncle Nick
(or your biological father)
What the-
I turn the next page and see photos of myself when I was a baby.
I've never seen what I looked like when I was little so this is new to me.
My eyes are still bright blue, and I'm actually smiling. I read the top of the page where I see 5 months. I look to the person holding me and it's my Uncle Nick. A smile is on his lips as well.
I look at him then to baby version of me. We both have similar smiles and have the same shade of blue that only we have in our family.
The photo flips up and behind the photo is a little folder which holds other baby pictures of myself. I bite my lip.
I look to the next side and see I'm a little older. I'm wearing a shirt that says 1 on it.
My arms are opened wide, indicating I want a hug from someone. My head tilts.
I open to the back of the book and see the DVD's. I stand up and take them with me to the living room.
Once I put the first one in the DVD player I sit down on my couch, turn on the TV, and hit play.
Anxiety fills my chest.
The camera shakes a little and you soon see newborn, baby me. My eyes are closed and my lips are opened a little. That reminds me of Finn. He always sleeps like that.
"Today is May 15th, also the day my daughter is born." The voice is familiar. "Niece I mean."
His thumb stroke my cheek. "Aren't you a cute little girl. You look nothing like your Mom. I'm not complaining, she's quite angry this morning." My head is pounding and my teeth graze over my bottom lip.
"I wanted to be the first to say, and maybe the only, that I named you. My birthday is May 14th, which was yesterday, and yours is today. So, I thought the name in the long run would make me smile when I know you can't call me your Dad." He lets out a sigh. "Plus, May is a kind of unique, cool name that most babies aren't named. So you're welcome."
"Anyways, I'll end the little video here. It became quite sad. I love you darling." The video ends and my eyes sting.
The disk goes to the main menu. I click the next one.
The video starts with my head on someone's chest. The chest is a male, and I already assume who it is considering who sent me this book and disks.
"You're awake. You're currently three months. I babysit for your parents three days a week. For the past months you've been just sleeping and chilling. I'll pick up from here since you're becoming a little more awake at times." His thumb strokes my temple.
"Today's video is just going to be a cute one of you. Because you are pretty cute I shall say. In my opinion, I think you're the cutest off spring of mine yet." He releases a chuckle. "Anyways, your Mom should be picking you up anytime now. I don't want you to go, if I'm being honest. I like having you here." You faintly hear the doorbell. "Looks like it's here." Nick sighs. "I'll see you Sunday angel. Goodbye." The screen goes black.
I'm confused.
I'm sad.
I'm overall in shock any of this actually happened.
I skip a head on the disks and play the second to last one.
I'm older, maybe two.
My hair is down. I have a lighter shade of brown hair and I have curls.
Uncle Nick sits beside me. "Okay May. How old are you now?"
"4." I say.
"No, you're not 4." My fingers fidget.
Nick's actually smiling.
He actually looks happy he's with me.
He actually looks like he gave a shit.
"Two?" My toddler self asks.
"Yes. Today is your second birthday." I just smile. "Wanna wave to your older self?" I shyly wave to the camera. My eyes sting again. "What's your name?"
"May." I say.
"What's your last name?" He asks.
I say Evans weirdly. It sounds like e-vans. The e is very prominent though.
"Good girl." He grins. "Who's your Mama?" My shoulders shrug and he laughs. "Who's your Dada?" I don't hesitate. I just point to Nick.
"No, I'm your Uncle." His happy smile fades into a sad one.
"Dada." I repeat.
"Can you say uncle?"
"Dada." He just laughs sadly.
"Can I get a hug?" I nod. I run up to him and wrap my little arms around his neck. He hugs back. "I love you May." I hear him murmur. My chest and head hurt.
We soon break away from our hug. "I gotta drop you off at your Mom's house now."
"Mama?"
"Yes, Mama." His fingers flatten down my hair. "Say goodbye." He points to the camera.
"Goodbye!" I say loudly with a smile. Uncle Nick stands and turns off the camera.
I need a hug now.
I turn off the TV and hear the front door close.
I close the book that I haven't looked through all yet.
"Babe?!" Harry calls.
"L-Living room!" I reply.
A few moments later he enters. "Hey." He puts the bags down on the floor and sits beside me. "Whatcha got?"
I show him the letter.
He reads it then looks to me. I show him the scrap book.
Harry looks at them in silence for a while and soon speaks. "There is a lot you don't know, isn't there?" Harry asks me.
"Seems so." I say with a sigh.
"You were a very adorable baby." He tells me. His dimples go on his cheeks. "You and Finn sleep the same."
"I've noticed." I chuckle.
"Did you watch the disks?"
"I watched a few. They make me more sad that I didn't have a father figure growing up. Or I did and he just didn't love me anymore. Seems like that with both of them." I say.
Harry frowns. "At least you know there are baby photos of you out there. And your Mom should know that you were a very cute baby that deserved to have photos taken off." I chuckle. "I'm serious. This is like baby model material right here. She could've made a lot." I rest my head on his shoulder. His fingers lace with mine.
"I feel like since I'm older now then when I was when I found out everything, that I shouldn't be bothered this much by these things." I say.
"You don't have any closure about anything with your biological father though. Your technical Dad said why he grew distant from you, and that was because you started to remind him of his brother. Other than that you're clueless. Why did your Mom treat you like shit? Why did Nick give up on you? These types of things any person would be curious about May. And there is nothing wrong with wanting answers." I hold onto his arm more.
"Harry?"
"Yes?" His fingers stroke my hand.
"Thank you for not making me feel like I'm crazy." He snickers.
"Of course love."
We hear Finn crying on the monitor.
"I'll get him." I say while standing.
***
"Hello." I say to Anne who's in the kitchen cooking.
Everyone one is here so the house is pretty loud.
Finn is in his crib upstairs. He fell asleep at seven.
"Hello dear." Anne says with a bright, warm smile. "How do you like the new puppy?"
"Great. Isn't he cute?" I say. He's drinking his water.
"Very. I went with Harry to pick him out."
"You did?" I ask.
"I did. He seemed more nervous about what dog to get you than what ring." I laugh. Anne smiles.
"Both he did well on."
"Very." She puts the carrots in the boiling water. "Harry told me you guys won't be having a wedding."
I bite my lip.
"Yeah." I say softly. She still looks happy.
"I understand why." Anne says while chopping up some garlic. "Me and Des didn't have a wedding. We were in Vegas actually and it was a spur of a moment thing. I look back at that day and smile. I don't regret not having a wedding. The reason for that is because it's supposed to be a memorisable day between you and your partner. It doesn't matter beside that. And if you wouldn't be happy having a whole, classic, white wedding, then so be it."
"I just feel bad that you won't see Harry at his wedding and all." I say honestly. Anne looks at me. She smiles.
"When Harry first brought you to dinner a long time ago, I had this feeling about you. It was a feeling I didn't get with Lily though. Yes, she was an amazing, bright, lovely girl. And maybe things would've been different if she were alive, but with you I just knew you and Harry would be together in the long run. Moms have these feelings, you'll see." I chuckle. "So, having and knowing this feeling about you is all I need to be happy with him being married. All a Mother wants is to know her children will be loved and cared for by their spouses. And I have no doubt you'll do that."
"Thank you Anne."
"No problem dear." She stirs the boiling carrots. "I should be thanking you. God only knows the shit Harry's put you through over the years." I chuckle. "Even as a kid he was closed off with his feelings and didn't say what he felt. He just kept it in." Things haven't change.
"He's overall a well raised man." I compliment. "I think I have you to thank for that." Anne gives me a wide smile.
"Thank you." I nod with a warm smile.
"Now, teach me how you make your mash potatoes. I've been dying to know." She teaches me without a question.
I like spending time with Anne. She's fun, and nice.
