May POV

Anne was coughing up blood at home, that's why she went to the hospital.

The doctors said they can't send her home, because the cancer went to different organs and her time is coming to an end.

Harry is outside talking to the doctors, so is Gemma and Des.

"Hi." I say to Anne who looks tired as ever.

"Hello dear." She says softly. She lets out a sigh a few moments later. I glance out the door, and look at the window. I see all three of them still talking to the doctor.

"I have a surprise for you." I say to her.

"What is it?" She asks. Her tired eyes look at me.

"You're the first one I wanted to tell. Harry doesn't even know." I say with a gentle smile. I pull out a photo of my ultrasound and give it to her.

She takes it from me slowly and brings it up to her eyes. "You're pregnant?" Her eyes look happy.

"Yes." I smile.

"I'm going to be a grandmother again?" My eyes sting and I nod. "That's wonderful dear. How long are you now?"

"Nearly 5 months." I say.

I wish she could see him or her. She helped me so much with Finn.

"Awe, that's amazing. Harry doesn't know yet?" My head shakes.

"I wanted you to be the first one to know." I reply.

"Thank you." I nod and squeeze her hand.

"Did you want me to bring Finn by?" I ask.

"No." Anne replies. "I don't want him to see me in here. I want his last memory of me to be of us baking and playing games." I bite my lip roughly. Her eyes look into mine. I nod.

"Uh, I've been trying to not talk to like you're d-dying but now...Your family is going to want to spend as much time with you as they can. And I don't want to be in the way or anything. So, I just want to say thank you for everything." A tear falls out of my eye and I quickly wipe it.  "I don't think I ever said that. I don't think I'd be the Mom I am to Finn now if you didn't help me."

"You don't need to thank me. That's what family do." I smile at her words.

It doesn't feel like I'm just losing a mother in law. It feels like I'm losing a friend.

"Just take care of Harry for me." She says with a faint smile.

"I will." I say with assurance. "And I'll make sure Des is distracted like you said."

"Thank you May." Her hand holds mine. Her eyes are brimming as well as mine. "A few nights ago I wrote down all my recipes for you. They're in a box on my dresser. Whenever you have a chance to pick them up, they're yours. I know Harry will miss his French toast on his birthday and Finn likes his cupcakes and muffins. Then you can pass them down to your possible daughter." I grin gently and sniffle.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Of course dear." Anne replies.

"Now, are you scared?" She nods.

"I like to think they're will be a place for me in heaven when I'm gone. But as you come closer to the realisation that one day you won't be living the life you have, it's scary." I bite my lip.

"I'm going to miss you Anne." She grins weakly.

"I'll miss you too May. I'll always be with you guys." Her hand pats mine.

I look back at the door and they seem to be finishing up their conversation.

"One more thing?"

"Yeah?" I ask.

"I don't know much about your relationship with your Mom. I don't know what happened between you guys, but I am a Mom. And besides having my own kids, being a grandmother is just as fun and amazing. Can you let Finn know her?" Her brown eyes meet mine.

"My Mom was a drug addict who hurt my siblings and I. We weren't close at all and I hated her. One day, I was married. I had Gemma and I didn't have a Mom. It was just us three. I was wondering where my Mom was. After high school I left and never came back. I hate what she put me through. One day after work I stopped by my old house and knocked on the door. The women behind it looked different. She looked healthy, she looked friendly, she didn't look like my Mom.

I eventually told her who I was and she cried and said how she messed up and wish she could go back and change everything. Slowly but surely she was in my life again. She was a fantastic grandmother. Harry and her were really close. Me telling you this is for the point of sometimes shitty Mom's make excellent grandmothers. Mine did, and I think yours will."

"I'm scared to let her know Finn." I admit. My voice low.

"Baby steps." She smiles weakly.

The three of them enter the hospital room and I squeeze Anne's hand once more before letting Gemma take my spot. I stand by Gem's husband and watch all of them interact.

All their eyes look sad. Especially Harry's. He manages a small grin.
