11. Burdensome
Seokjin found himself pleasantly relieved the next day when he woke up to find himself still in the new world. He opened his eyes to stare up at the white puckered ceiling above him as some sort of brightly colored cone shaped rays of light from outside slipped across it. There was an odd noise beside him. He turned his head to see that Jungkook had shifted in the night to lay on his stomach. His face was facing Seokjin, and the sound was coming from his mouth.
Sounds. How odd. This sound didn't have any sort of words or meaning to it.
So much for Jungkook getting up early to work out.
Seokjin moved to sit up, rubbing a hand over his eyes. He could smell something coming from the kitchen, moving to get up and see who was cooking. As he slipped out of the bedroom and made his way towards the kitchen, he noticed Aspen standing there. She was standing at the stove cooking strips of bacon. Seokjin felt his mouth salivate at the sight. The deep shades of...well, he didn't know what color yet exactly. He would have to study the swatches some more. Aspen was so focused on what she was doing that she didn't notice Seokjin's appearance for a second. When he eventually laid his hand on her shoulder, she jumped. He immediately withdrew his hand as she turned to face him.
"Oh, Seokjin. It's just you."
- Sorry. I didn't mean to scare you.
"You're fine. I was wondering where you went. The couch was empty."
- I didn't disappear.
"Well...that's good I suppose," she said with a light laugh. "Are you hungry?"
He nodded his head as she smiled. She couldn't help but to notice yet again how fine this man looked even in the morning with his bed head hair and rumpled clothing. He moved to lean against the counter as he watched her cook, holding up another line that he had scribbled down.
- Can I help at all?
"No. You can just stand there. How are you today?"
She flipped the bacon around in the pan before looking over.
- I'm doing alright.
Are you okay with your audition being today?
"You're sweet to be worried, but even though I have butterflies, I think I'll be okay."
- You will be.
Can I go to it too?
"I don't know if that would be a good idea. You should stay with Jungkook today. He said he'd watch after you anyway."
- Do you think Jungkook will teach me anything?
"I'm sure he's got quite a few lessons up his sleeve, though I'm not sure how wise those lessons will be."
Aspen moved to grab a plate, slipping some bacon onto it before handing it to Seokjin. Seokjin put the notebook aside to pick up a limp piece of bacon. He then brought it to his mouth. He was soon all smiles as he chewed it. He couldn't even hum in satisfaction. It was odd to her to have a man so silent around her after Jungkook and Jimin.
"IS THAT BACON?!"
Turning Aspen watched as Jimin pretty much launched out of his bedroom to the kitchen. He went right over to the pan that Aspen had left on the stove, practically sticking his face in it.
"Hungry, Jimin?"
"Dumb question, Aspen," said Jimin. "When am I not hungry?"
"True," she chuckled as she watched Jimin grab a plate, pausing when he saw Seokjin already eating. His face flushed then.
"Oh shoot. I forgot...I'm sorry, Seokjin. I hope I didn't scare you with my shout."
Seokjin looked up with a piece of bacon still dangling from his mouth, shaking his head. Jimin was glad that he hadn't alarmed Seokjin, chuckling as the other immediately finished inhaling the strip of bacon into his mouth.
"Are you busy today, Jimin?" asked Aspen as Jimin grabbed a few strips, moving to jump up onto the kitchen table and sit on it on his rear.
"I have dance practice," said Jimin. "Why?"
"My audition is today," she said. "And Jungkook volunteered to watch over Seokjin. I'm just worried..."
Jimin looked at Aspen before looking over at Seokjin.
"Well, does it make you feel better that I'm 99.99 percent certain Jungkook isn't a murderer?"
Aspen chuckled.
"What about the other 0.1 percent?"
"Depends on his mood," said Jimin with a smirk before growing more serious, "But I think Jungkook and Seokjin will be fine together for a little bit. I'll make sure to swing by after dance practice though to check and make sure."
"Thank you," said Aspen.
Seokjin couldn't help but stand there and wonder if he was more of a burden to the three of them than anything else. He put the empty plate down and moved to walk off to the living room. He wandered over to the window again where he had stood last night before Jungkook found him, staring out at the changing colors of the scene before him. The outdoors seemed to be like a living piece of art. The colors never stayed the same, and it fascinated Seokjin.
"Seokjin?"
He turned from the window when he heard Aspen saying his name, seeing that concern was written on her face. He moved to write a response out for her.
- I'm okay.
I just get in my head a lot.
Can I help you with getting ready at all?
"No, but thank you. Just wish me luck."
- You won't need it.
She smiled softly at what he had written. She couldn't believe she had become so attached to a stranger in such a short amount of time. Seokjin gave her a soft smile in return. He didn't want her to worry about him when she had other things to worry about. He had to prove that he wouldn't be a burden to anyone.
It was then that Jungkook decided to emerge from his bedroom. He had changed out of his pajamas already, and was sporting navy blue jeans and a white t-shirt. He walked right to the kitchen as if attracted by the scent, snatching up a piece.
"Aspen, you're the best," Jungkook said as he started eating.
"And you will be the best in return by watching out for Seokjin today, correct?"
Jungkook looked over at Seokjin by the window for a moment before nodding his head. Jungkook couldn't help but wonder if Seokjin had told on him. It didn't seem like it.
Aspen smiled, disappearing off to her bedroom to get ready after that. Seokjin watched her go before looking out the window again. There it was again with them making him sound burdensome. He vowed to himself right then and there that he would prove he could belong in this world if it was the last thing he did.
