Spiral: A skater glides on one foot with their chest facing towards the ice and with the free leg stretched back.

There was a knock on Rosaura's door and she frowned wondering who could be at her apartment at a time like this. Taking a look through the small peephole, she was surprised to see Val standing on the other side. She swung the door open, "Hey, what are you doing here?"

Val gave her a mischievous smile. "We are going to a party."

Rosaura shook her head. "You know that I don't like parties..."

Val looped his arm over her shoulder. "That is exactly why you need to go. It's been three weeks since we have been here and you haven't made any friends besides me."

"In my defense, I am too busy with ice dancing practices to make friends." Rosaura replied tartly.

Val sighed. "I know you're shy but you can't always depend on me for everything."

Rosaura gave him a weird glance. "Are you thinking about bailing on me?"

Val laughed. "No, but friends are good to make. Also, it is healthier to think about things other than figure skating. Besides, the party we are going to is with people our age. I'll make you a deal. If you make a friend and exchange information with them, we can leave the party immediately."

Rosaura didn't want to go but she also knew that Val would uphold his promise. "Fine, sit on the couch and I'll be ready in twenty minutes."

She didn't wait for his reply before entering her room and swing her closet door open. Her closet had been divided into three sections. On one side, she kept all her sportswear, on the other side she had her ice dancing costumes and suffocated between the two were her normal day to day clothes. Rosaura picked out a maroon sweater dress and a matching pair of knee-length black heeled boots. Quickly slipping into the outfit, she turned towards her makeup.

Forty minutes later, Rosaura was done. She had skipped the highlight and contour and instead put on some foundation, mascara, and a nude lipstick. When she made her way back to the living room, she could see that Val was on his phone and texting someone.

He looked up when she entered and smiled, "You looking stunning Rose."

Rosaura returned his smiled. "Thanks, now are we going or what?"

When they reached the front of her apartment building, she was surprised to see that it was not Val's car waiting for them but an Uber driver. She turned to Val quizzingly and he shook his head, "Safer this way since I was planning to drink."

Rosaura smiled before jumping to ruffle his hair. "Aren't you a responsible boy," she said mockingly.

He glared at her before opening the door to her side and got in the other side. The ride to the party was filled with laugher and jokes. They avoided discussing anything related to ice dancing as it usually increased the tension between them. Instead, Val talked about the couple of online courses he was taking through the university. He had taken two years off before finally deciding that he did want to purse a post-secondary education. Western University had adapted to his schedule and that was one of the reasons as to why Rosaura and Val were practicing in the city of London, Ontario.

Rosaura had decided to take the year off in hopes of qualifying for the Olympics and winning a medal. After she and Val won, there would be time to go back and study. But right now, her focus was solely on ice-dancing and placing at the podium.

They arrived a few minutes later to a large house that seemed relatively quiet to be hosting a party. Rosaura turned towards Val, "Are you sure this is the right house?"

Val nodded. "That's the address one of my buddies gave me. It has to be."

Nevertheless, the two of them got out of the vehicle and proceeded towards the house. Val rang the doorbell and Rosaura stood behind him anxiously tapping her foot on the pavement as they waited for someone to answer the door. A few minutes later, the door swung open and a dark-haired man open the door.

Just as the door opened, Rosaura heard the loud club-like music hitting her ears. She smiled, now this seemed like a place for a party.

"Do I know you?" The man said glancing between Rosaura and Val.

Val shook his head before introducing them both. "Reese said it would be okay if we swung by."

Recognition lit his eyes before he let them in with a smile. Rosaura couldn't help but ask the question, "How come the music doesn't travel outside?"

The man gave her a mischievous glint. "Sound proof walls make this place the hotspot for parties. It's been a well-hidden secret of the Western Alumni for years."

Rosaura nodded, satisfied with the information she had received. Val led her further instead towards the kitchen where a wide assortment of chips and alcoholic drinks were present. Val took a beer for himself before offering Rosaura one as well but she shook her head and pointed towards to punch. He gave her a glass and she took a long sip before almost spitting it out.

"Jesus Christ, what the hell is in that?"

Val laughed and said something, but Rosaura couldn't hear over the loud noise. He stepped closer to before whispering in her ear, "Rose, it's probably lanced with vodka. You're so innocent."

Rosaura pushed him back gently before laughing. She sipped the drink once more, and the taste was much better than it had been at first. It was true, Rosaura was never one for partying. Val loved to go out and drink because he was a firm believer in meeting people, but Rosaura preferred to stay home curl in a blanket and watch a good movie.

They stood in the kitchen for a bit longer before Val yelled over the loud music, "I have to go to the bathroom, will you be okay here?"

Rosaura nodded, and he left her standing in the kitchen awkwardly not knowing what to do. Ten minutes passed, and Val had not returned yet. Feeling anxious, Rosaura took out her phone and called him, but he didn't answer. She moved towards the corner of the kitchen as people brushed past her. She knew most people were dancing in the living room, but she didn't feel particularly inclined to join them. So, she settled on pulling a chair towards the corner.

A few minutes later, she was aware of someone else joining her. She looked up to see a brown-haired girl crawling under the table. Their eyes met as the girl went under and out of sight. Rosaura pulled the table cloth back, "what are you doing?"

The girl made a shushing finger, "I'm hiding from my brother, put the cloth down please."

Rosaura looked up, but she couldn't see anyone but Val approaching but nonetheless, she listened to the girl's pleas.

"Is everything okay?" Val asked.

Rosaura gave him a bright smile. "Everything is fine."

Val looked like he wanted to ask more questions but shrugged his shoulder. "Do you want to dance?"

Rosaura shook her head. She was more interested in hearing the girls story. "No, but you go ahead."

She could see him hesitating, "I'll be fine." she promised.

Val nodded before leaving her. Rosaura pulled the table cloth and the girl gingerly climbed out.

"The coast look's clear now..." the girl muttered more towards herself.

"Why were you hiding from your brother?" Rosaura asked.

The girl laughed. "It's a school night, and he doesn't like it whenever I show up to the same place as him. He would have called my mom and made her pick me up."

Rosaura was surprised. "Isn't that a bit douche?"

"Nah, he's just worried because I'm underage."

Rosaura took a good look at the girl. She did look younger than the university crowd. "How old are you?"

"I'm sixteen, almost seventeen."

Rosaura shook her head. "Well, your brother is right, you shouldn't be here."

The girl scrunched her nose, "Oh don't tell me you are one of those stuffy, good-girls."

Rosaura was taken back by her observation. She had never considered herself as an uptight person and she did drink and let loose occasionally—under a controlled environment. Sometime about the way the girl said it made it seemed bad and Rosaura surprisingly felt very self-conscious.

The girl seeing her expression winced in apology. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean it to be something bad." She extended her hand. "I'm Brea."

Rosaura shook her hand and introduced herself. "What are you doing here all alone?"

Brea smiled sadly. "All my friends bailed on me last minute. They were too worried about studying for biology instead of partying it with me. So, I took it upon myself to party alone."

Rosaura was taken back by her attitude. She had always considered partying alone nerve-ranking but here a girl almost two years younger than her had more courage. "Don't worry, you're not alone anymore. I'll keep you company."

Brea's eyes lit up with excitement. She opened her mouth to say something, but Brea quickly hid behind her. "I see my brother's friends approaching, he must be coming as well, let's get out of here."

Before Rosaura could say anything else, she was being dragged out of the house in lighting speed. She elbowed someone on the way past and she heard swearing, but Brea wouldn't let her arm go before they were both outside.

They both looked at one another and began laughing. The girl was crazy, but Rosaura decided she liked her—a lot.

I really don't like writing party scenes but needed it for the introduction of the newest character Brea. Please vote and comment after you read the chapters. It means a lot.
