Killian's P.O.V
"What do you mean, I'm not your daughter?!"
Red jumped out of her seat from the bomb that her parents had just dropped. When they arrived, they didn't look confused to see Lacey, just shocked. Both my mother and her parents had just looked at each other. A silent message passing between them.
My suspicions had been right. They must have been involved in separating Lilly and Lacey. But why would they do that?
Lilith was the one who broke the silence first, going over to embrace Lacey. Followed by Marco and my mother. Lacey looked scared at first but broke down when they touched her. Lilly had left them to enjoy seeing her, but after a while, she asked them to explain why they never told her that she had a twin. It was then that her mother told them that she wasn't their biological mother.
The news shocked me as well as Red because of all the things that I've thought about that possibility never crossed my mind.
"If I'm not your daughter, then whose daughter am I?" Lilly asked.
Lilith looked at my mother who nodded. "We have to tell them, Lilith. It's time they know the truth."
Marco took his wife's hand, offering her courage. From the look on their faces, I could tell that whatever it was, it wasn't going to be good.
"We don't know your parents personally. It was just a job sweetie. We didn't even know they had kids." Lilith pleaded.
"Oh f**k." Mik swore, understanding what they were about to say.
I got up and put my hands around Lilly's waist because I knew that what her parents were about to say would hit her really hard.
"The intel we got never mentioned anything about their being kids. It wasn't until after we were doing a sweep of the place that we found you and your sister hiding in the closet. We were going to leave you, but you were so sick, and your sister wouldn't let go of you."
Lilly shook her head. "You didn't. You didn't. Please tell me that you didn't do what I'm thinking you did?"
Lilith got up, trying to reach for Lilly, but she pulled into me. Avoiding her touch. I saw the hurt passed in her eyes, but she accepted it.
"It was our job, baby, we didn't know. We stopped after that, got out of the life, intending to make you and your sister part of our family."
Lilith tried reaching for her again, but Red kept pulling away. "And what? Am I supposed to be grateful to you for that after you murdered my parents?!" Lilly spat.
Lacey sat with her hand folded in her lap. Silent tears running down her face as she listened to her sister.
"Honey, please. Your mother and I love you. We love you both." Marco said appealing to Lilly, but it just made her even angrier.
"You are not our f**king parents! Stop acting like them, not after you murdered them!" Lilly screamed.
I held her as she cried. Her body rocked with it. I wished I could do something to make it all better for her, but her demons were one that only she could see. Her pain was my pain, and it pissed me off that I couldn't fix it for her.
"You are the reason that Lacey lived a life in hell that made her become so f**ked up! You are the reason that I'm currently struggling with an identity crisis! We would have been fine had you people never took our parents away from us!" She said through sobs.
Lacey never reacted. Apart from the silent tears that she was shedding, she stayed quiet. Just taking everything in.
She turned to my mother. "What part did you play in this? Did you help them cover it up?"
My mother looked at her with sympathy. "No. You might not believe this, but Lilith and I were best friends before Killian's dad ruined my life. We still stayed close after, but it wasn't the same. She called me when she brought you, girls, home because you were sick, and I was studying to be a nurse. Kennedy thought that it would keep me busy, and I could help his men when they needed it."
My rage took over at the mention of my father. Years had passed since I ended his wretched life, but my hatred for the man still remained. And the woman standing in front of me didn't fare better. I f**king hated her too.
"You were really sick, Lilly. We tried everything. Took you to specialists after specialists, but none of them could tell us what was wrong with you. Months went by and you were not getting better. You wouldn't talk, you couldn't walk. You wouldn't let anyone touch you, only Lacey." My mother continued.
Lilly calmed down a bit listening to my mother, but she was still very much angry. And I didn't blame her. It was f**ked how they kept something so big from her all her life.
"We didn't separate you. We lost Lacey. We were all out one day when it happened. You had started to get better, and we thought that we'd go out and celebrate. You girls were supposed to stay at the table. Your father and I went to collect our food, but we caught a glimpse of you running out of the diner. We didn't think to check if Lacey was still at the table, we just went after you. When we went back inside to get Lacey, she was gone." Lilith said.
"Did you even look for her? Why did I leave the diner?" Lilly asked hugging herself.
"Of course, we looked. We tried everything that we could do except going to the police. We were ex-criminals; it wasn't a risk that we could have taken. But we did try, we hired many trackers to try and find her, but would come up empty every time." Marco continued for Lilith who had started crying.
"Why did I leave the diner?" Lilly asked again.
"It wasn't your fault, Lilly," Lilith said instead of answering.
"Why?!" She persisted.
Lilith refused to answer, shaking her head. Marco ran his hand up and down her arms, trying to calm her.
"Why, mum?" Lilly asked in a very small broken voice.
"You said that you hated her, and it was her fault that Killian stop coming to visit you. You were going to search for him." Lilith finally said.
"What? What do you mean?" She asked, confused. And so was I.
My mother smiled, looking from Lacey to Lilly. "You two were as thick as thieves. Nothing and no one could have come between you."
She turned to Lacey, "You were an incredible big sister. You were only five, but you were quite responsible. You protected and took care of Lilly even when we told you that you didn't have to. You two loved each other tremendously."
Marco snorted, "Yeah, that was until Killian severed their bond."
"Marco." Lilith warned at the same time my mother said, "That's not fair Marco, Killian was only a child."
I frowned, "What the f**k do you mean? How did I sever their bond?"
Lilly swayed against me. I held her close and guided her back to the couch. After making sure that she was okay, I turned back to my mother, telling her to continue.
"When I would go over to Lilith and Marco's house, I would sometimes take you with me. You and Lacey took to each other instantly. You would follow her everywhere and she was just as happy to have you there. You kids became friends."
Lilly stiffened in my arms, and I rubbed her shoulders to soothe her. After a while, she relaxed.
"However, you always wanted to know why I would disappear into the room and why you weren't allowed to go in with me. And being the determined kid that you were, you waited until the room was empty and you snuck in and never came out." She smiled, remembering.
"What do you mean?" Lacey asked, finally finding her voice.
"I mean, when we found Killian, he was sitting on Lilly's bed, reading her a story and she was laughing. We've never seen her laugh with anyone apart from you, not even with her brothers." She finished.
Lilith continued, "We were so happy. It was a breakthrough. We thought that you were finally opening up, coming out of your shell so to speak. So, we left you two, and when it was time for Kimora to leave you got really sad. With tears in your little eyes, you asked Killian if he was leaving you. If he was going to come back for you."
My mother laughed, "Yes, I remember that. And Killian confidently told you that he was coming back, that he will always come back for you."
Lilly leaned into me, and I held her tighter, burying my face into her hair and inhaling her scent.
"I've loved you from the moment I laid eyes on you, woman," I said, kissing her hair.
"I don't get it. How did that sever our bond?" Lacey asked, confused.
"Because after that, Killian completely ignored you. He only wanted to spend his time with Lilly. You would ask him if he wanted to play, and he would say no that he only wanted to see Lilly. He would be so cold towards you. It broke your heart." My mother said with a sad smile.
Mik chuckled from behind us. I had forgotten that he was even in the room and so did everyone else.
"Sorry," Mik apologised with a laugh when everyone turned to look at him. "Please continue, this story is highly entertaining."
From the frown on Marco and Lilith's face, I could tell that they were considering shooting him. I almost sympathised with them.
My mother frowned at Mik. "As I was saying, you took Killian's rejection really hard, and you blamed Lilly for it. You said that she stole your friend away from you. Then you started refusing to spend time with her. Lilly got very sad, and Killian started spending more time with you to please Lilly. But you were still upset because Killian would tell you that he was only doing it because Lilly asked him to."
I leaned into her. "Always had me wrapped around your finger, woman," I whispered into her ears, with a laugh.
The thought made me happy. I knew she was my world when I saw her at her brother's football game. Now hearing that our connection went back even further warmed my heart and made me love her even more. I was even more sure that she was meant for me and only me.
"You thought that Killian only liked Lilly because she looked like you and because she was sick, so you would try to make yourself sick as well. But even when we would mix you two up, Killian never did. He could always pick Lilly out. Even in pictures, it was incredible." My mother finished with a smile.
I smiled at that too. It was true, I always knew who my baby was. No one felt the way she did in my arms, no one made my heart stirred the way she did. And no one could make me love them and wanted to kill them at the same goddamn time. It was a skill that only she possessed.
"As entertaining as this trip down memory lane is, something doesn't add up."
Everyone turned to look at Mik who was out of his seat and leaning against the bookshelf.
"If memory serves me right, Killian was two when you left him. How was it possible for you to be there when he was five as well?"
F**k! Mik was right. I hadn't even thought about that. My dad and everyone around me told me that she left when I was two.
"I never left him at two. I left when he was five and it wasn't by choice. I would never have left him with that monster." My mother said feeling offended by Mik's accusing tone.
"Explain yourself." Mik pushed.
My mother looked insulted, but I didn't care. The fact still remained that she left, and I had to fend for myself. I had no one to take care of me or to protect me. Mik was only a few years older than me, but he's had my back from the moment we met. I can one hundred per cent guarantee that Mik would take a bullet for me. I couldn't say the same for her.
She looked at me and I shrugged my shoulders. "What he said."
Her shoulders slumped. "I had just finish treating Lilly and when I got home your father was drunk. He started screaming that I was with another man. I told him I wasn't but, he didn't believe me. He got very violent, and I thought that he was going to kill me, so I ran. I tried to get to you, but none of his men would let me take you. I got to Lilith's, and we decided to fake my death. I couldn't go back there, not after I ran from him. He would have killed me."
Mik snorted, "So what? You just f**king left him? Do you even know what he went through, what that monster did to him? Did you even care?"
"What are you talking about?" My mother asked, a horrified look in her eyes.
Mik opened his mouth to tell her, but I intervened. "Don't f**king go there Mik." I warned.
I knew what he was referring to and I knew that he intended to tell my mother about it. But that was a part of my life that I wanted to forget. I wanted it dead and buried with the bastard that caused my pain.
"She needs to know, Killian. She needs to know the cruelty you faced at the hands of that bastard." He pushed.
I got up and faced him. My voice holding no room for argument. "I said that that is enough! She doesn't need to know f**k. Leave it alone!"
He squared his shoulders and faced me, ignoring my warning. "I think you're being a stubborn bastard. She should know what her five-year-old son went through. She needs to f**king share in your pain."
I pulled my gun out, "One more f**king word and I will shoot you."
Lilly got up and walked over to us. She placed her hand over mine, telling me to put the gun away. I didn't want to, but I did for her sake. She was already going through a lot. I didn't want to add to her troubles.
I holstered my gun. "You would have made a shit pastor. Always ready to spill everyone's confessions. Don't f**king understand the concept of confidentiality."
Mik shrugged his shoulders and grinned. "That's why I became a criminal instead. That and the pay is so much f**king better."
Red rested her head on my arm, "I'm tired Killian, I've had enough for today."
I wrapped my hands around her. "Sure baby, let's go to bed."
I took her and guided her out of the room, instructing Mik to deal with her family and my mother. They asked to see the kids, but Lilly declined. She didn't know if she wanted our kids to meet them.
As I tucked her into bed and watched as she drifted into sleep. I knew that I'd stop at nothing to find where her real parents were buried. I was going to give my baby the closure she needed.
