The Meaning Behind "Hostage" and "Rebellion"
AUTHOR'S NOTE:
Hi! I'm now going to explain the meaning behind the two UTurn songs, "Hostage" and "Rebellion." Now, I did write these songs, but I had to think as a UTurn member writing them. As you've read, UTurn was controlled by Maurice. They couldn't speak out against him, or else he would force them to split up...which he (kind of?) did. So they apparently decided that if they can't speak out, then they would put it into songs.
The first is "Hostage." Here is the chorus:
Him and her wanna be in love but they can't
No, they're being held hostage
Are they in, are they out
Not even they know the answer
No, it's all just confusion
In the chous, it says that the two power couples of the band, Andyson (Andrew/Alyson) and Bailstin (Bailey/Justin) can't be open with their relationships, but they're forced to tease their fans. So there's confusion from the fans
This is the first verse:
PDA out the door
It's too young for them
They had to say "Goodbye, goodbye"
To the high school love they had
Keep it all inside
Don't let the world know
"Shh," they're told
In this verse, they're describing how the couples weren't allowed to say they're dating. They were told to keep quiet about it.
This is the second verse:
Sirens go off
As the videos come out
They're being forced to tease
The forbidden love they had
Is it real, is it fake
Is it all just plastic
"Oh wow," they're told
This is describing how the couples are now being forced to tease the fans. "As the videos come" line had to do with UTurn's first raunchy music video, "Getting Here With You." In the video, the two couples, primarily Andyson, initially started the confusion. So the fans debate a lot on whether Andyson was actually real or not. Yet, the couple neither confirms or deny anything.
Now on to "Rebellion." This song is very detailed yet cryptic in the lyrics. Here's the first half of the first verse:
My mouth is taped shut
With your silence
Like a puppet on a string
You make my every move for me
In this section, it describes how UTurn were being controlled by Maurice, and how they couldn't say anything.
This is the second section:
You pay the media
To cover up the truth
Too shocking for the public
Must be squeaky clean
This section describes how the band had to cover up the lawsuits, restraining orders, and Andrew's bullying past from the media. Since they signed with a Disney label (Hollywood Records), they had to be "squeaky clean."
This is the first half of the second verse:
I'm just a robot to you
Following your orders
You're tracking my moves
Making sure I don't derail
This section is describing how they're being watched by their management. They were forced to do whatever they're told...unless Andrew and Alyson say otherwise. You know those two are the most powerful members in the group.
This is second section:
I'm sugary sweet bubblegum
Now I'm R-rated sexiness
You're making me confused
I'm gonna self destruct
This is describing how UTurn has two images: One moment they're cute, tween-friendly UTurn, the next moment they're sexy, near-pornographic UTurn. The section also describes how fans are getting confused on which UTurn is the "real one."
This is the first half of the third verse:
You're the paparazzi
I'm in the photographs
They're all over your wall
Seeing if you still own me
Once again, this is describing how they're being watched and controlled.
This is the second half:
High school love is covered up
Rumors are flying
The public is restless
But who cares
I'll still be me
This section, like "Hostage," is describing how Andyson and Bailstin (both high school couples) are forced to cover up the relationships. "Rumors are flying" describes how the couples are teasing their fans, leading to speculation. "The public is restless" is a reference to the fans demanding answers.
This is the chorus:
I'm gonna go on a rebellion
Gonna do my own thing
You can't control me
You don't own me like property
I'm gonna go my own way
You'll be left behind
Cuz I'm gonna start a rebellion
The chorus describes how UTurn are revolting against how they're being treated by everyone they're working with, like Maurice, their marketing teams, record labels, etc. The band is determined to have creative freedom.
So that's it with the "hidden meanings" behind "Hostage" and "Rebellion." And this is also the end of book4: Fighting For the One. Coming in February, book5: The One with The X Factor. As the final chapter said, "Is it really the end of UTurn...or is it just the beginning?" You'll find out this February.
