Chapter13: Underground Rebellion
ChapterThirteen-Underground Rebellion
September 10th, 2007
It's a few days later, and UTurn were back in Boston. They were still angered about Maurice's tightening grip on the band. Despite this, they were forced to go to a meeting with their controlling manager.
When the members arrived, they chose to stand instead of sitting. Maurice noticed this, but decided to move on with the meeting, "Starting tomorrow, you will begin recording your third album. It'll be your second album for Eastern Europe."
Andrew asked in a monotone, "Do you have the demos?"
Maurice replied, "Yes, I do. Do you want to hear the songs?"
Andrew gave a half-hearted shrug. Maurice then played the songs. He first played the songs that could be on their third album. The songs had a pop-rock sound, like something the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus would record.
Unimpressed, Alyson asked, "What do our Russian songs sound like?"
Maurice then played the next set of songs. The songs were a mixture of dance, electronic, urban, and pop. This made the UTurn members smile. The music was Top 40 material, and they could hear pop singers like Rihanna and Justin Timberlake singing this stuff.
Alyson then blurted out, "OMG, these songs need to go on our American CD."
The members agreed with Alyson. Then Maurice said this, "No, you are only doing pop-rock for America."
The members then argued with Maurice. Andrew told him, "Look, this Justin Timberlake-Nelly Furtado sound would turn us into a mainstream pop group. Doing Radio Disney shit is hurting us, along with the whole Russian sex pin-up shit!"
Maurice ignored Andrew, and said, "You all start recording tomorrow."
Andrew retorted, "Weren't you listening to a word I said? We demand that you let us record mainstream pop music, not Disney shit!"
Once again, Maurice ignored him, and continued talking, "There's another meeting you all must attend. It's just down the hall."
The members stood there, angered. Then they slowly walked out of the office, and went into the boardroom. They saw several people in the room.
Still fuming, Alyson asked, "So, why are we in this room?"
One of the people announced, "We're students at Boston College, and we were offered to film a web series on you guys."
With that, the members went from being furious to confused. Amanda blurted out sarcastically, "Wow, more surprises."
Andrew responded to her comment, "That's exactly what I'm thinking. So, why exactly are we filming a web series? Did our f*cked up TV show get rejected. And is this supposed web series gonna make us do porn? If it does, I'll sue you. I'm Andrew f*cking Hawthorne! My parents are lawyers!"
One of the other college students responded out of irritation, "Hey Andrew, I thought you changed from your bullying ways. I guess you haven't changed much...except turning into some gay porn-star who's trying be Disney, and vice-versa."
Andrew asked, "And you are?"
The guy replied, "Of course you wouldn't remember me. It's Stan. I went to Beacon Hill High with you."
Andrew replied, "Yeah, you're right. I don't remember you."
Just then, Maurice entered the room. He said, "Andrew, stop picking fights with everyone."
Andrew replied out of irritation, "I don't pick fights. It's just that certain people need to fear me and the Hawthorne name. Has anyone forgotten my parents are lawyers?"
Stan taunted, "Yeah, like anyone's gonna take you seriously when you have an international identity crisis."
As Andrew was about to fight Stan, Justin and Trevor stopped him. Andrew calmed down a bit, but he was still irritable.
Maurice then announced, "The reason why I call these college students is because they'll be the producers, script-writers, directors, and film-makers for your new web series."
Alyson asked, "Wait, what happened to our TV series?"
He explained, "Oh, you all are going to film your TV series. It's just that the writers are working on the scripts for the episodes. You should start filming this January. But in the meantime, your fans should get used to the idea of UTurn as actors. So you'll be filming your web series, and the webisodes should be up in early October."
With that, both the UTurn members and the college students were in shock. One of the students, Janet, spoke up, "Maurice, there's no way we can finish by October."
Alyson added, "Yeah, that girl's right. Besides, we have to record that third album."
Maurice said, "Look, you all are doing this. Oh, and UTurn, you will premiere three songs from your third album on the web series. Andrew, don't argue with me."
Then Maurice walked out, leaving everyone in a mixture of shock, confusion, and anger.
About thirty minutes later, UTurn were back in their house. They were still fuming over Maurice's sprung up plans.
As they entered the living room, Andrew spoke up, "Okay, enough's enough! We can't keep getting steamrolled by Maurice! We need to stand up for ourselves."
Alyson added, "Exactly! This is our band, not his! And he can't just spring up plans on us without talking to any of us."
Then Justin spoke up, "And how can we defend UTurn when he's holding us hostage? It's not like we can go on some secret rebellion."
With that, Alyson and Andrew exchanged looks. Justin noticed this, so he said, "Or maybe we can."
Then Andrew said hastily, "Okay, we need to brainstorm ideas. We need our own sound, our own image."
Alyson added, "Yeah, and we need a way to promote the real UTurn."
"We must have our own songs," said Andrew. Then he asked the members, "Can one of you contact the producers that we worked with on our first album?"
Stacie replied, "I'll do it, and so will Trevor."
Trevor responded, "But I don't know who you guys worked with."
"I'll help you."
Then Amanda asked, "So we'll be recording another third album?"
Alyson replied, "That's exactly what we're doing."
Andrew chimed in, "Yeah, and I just thought of something. We can record our own songs, and we can secretly put some of them onto both our American and Russian CDs."
"Great idea!"
"But if we're going to secretly record songs, who will be writing the songs?" Bailey asked.
Amanda suggested, "I think Andrew and Alyson should be the songwriters."
Andrew responded, "But we can't write all the songs. It'll take too much time. We should all write songs. Together."
The members agreed. Then Bailey asked again, "What about having our image?"
Alyson replied, "We should be sexy, but not trashy. Something kind of like the clothes we wore when we promoted our first album."
Andrew added, "Yeah, but we need to get away from the S Club 8 concept. I know their style is cool, but we need develop our own style."
"Just let you lot know that there's no way we can stop the S Club 8 comparisons," said Justin. "As long as we have 3 blokes and 5 girls, the comparisons will persist."
Libby suggested, "We could try doing color coordination. We could all wear black and red."
Then Stacie, who was looking through her new iPhone, also suggested, "Why don't we look somewhat like RBD?"
Amanda asked, "What's 'RBD'?"
"Have forgotten that meeting we had last year? It was when Maurice told us why we couldn't promote our music in Latin America."
Andrew chimed in, "Yeah, I remember that. We couldn't go to Latin American because we would've been crushed by two pop bands, RBD and Kudai. I checked them out, and yeah, they would've destroyed us. They're both hugely popular, and we're still the 'local band'."
Stacie continued, "Yeah, and anyway, I was thinking we could have a similar style to RBD. Kudai is too emo for us."
She then showed a picture of RBD on her iPhone to everyone. Then Justin asked, "So, instead of imitating S Club 8, we imitate RBD? That defeats the purpose of having our own image."
Alyson suggested, "Then why don't we just combine stuff? S Club 8 had cool outfits, but they need to look more '2007'. RBD's style is too 'out there' for us. So, we just put everything together, and we got our own look. Sexy and current, but not outlandish, not slightly dated, not trashy, and not Disney."
The members agreed to this. Then Stacie and Trevor went off to call the music producers that worked on their first album. After about an hour, they were able to finalize a deal. The members must write 20 songs, and they are to start recording in early October.
During the phone conference, Andrew, Alyson, and Amanda made sketches of the new UTurn image. Soon, everything was set. All they need now is a recording studio, and a venue for the new UTurn.
