What's in a Name
Cameras flashed, videos were rolling, both the paparazzi and reporters that were welcomed in the public announcement were jumping over one another to get the scoop. Nezu, Aizawa, Present Mic, Midnight, and the police chief all sat at the panel. You watched the interview from Mei's computer, sandwiched between her and Kaminari at what seemed like the asscrack of dawn. Your phone buzzing with messages from your classmates about them all watching the interview, wishing you support.
"Principal Nezu!"
"Principal Nezu!"
"Present Mic!"
"Midnight look here!"
"Eraserhead! Over Here!"
"Principal Nezu!"
"Midnight, give us a pose!"
"Principal Nezu!"
"Don't you think you are putting the rest of the students at UA in danger by forcing them to be classmates with a murderer?" The female reporter elbowed her way to the front, her eyes as calculating as her words. This question was the first one that wasn't pointless. With the best smile a creature could muster, Nezu clapped his paws together. He scrambled to stand on the podium and looked down at the sea of reporters.
"[Name] is not a danger to any of her fellow students, in fact, despite knowing who she is, she has befriended many of her classmates." You really had grown up from the scared, panic fighter of a little girl you were when Nezu had first met you. He had full faith that you were not a legitimate threat to any of the students or civilians around you.
"Do you really you believe a killer can become a hero? Whose to say you are not being manipulated as she bides her time to return to a life of villainy." A man spoke up, waving his camera man to get a close up of the panel as he asked his questions.
"I have full faith in [Name] becoming a hero, if I didn't, I would never have elected to have her taken in by heroes and join UA." Anyone who knew Nezu well enough knew he was talking down to the reporter, like he was ignorant to even pose such a question. If anyone was a threat to the students, it definitely wasn't you.
"[Name] Tenshi has been monitored by the police since she came to Japan, she is a good kid and not a danger to any of her classmates nor any of you." The police captain spoke firmly, if the assurance of the pro-heroes wasn't enough, the police department vouching for your safety should be enough.
"What if you are wrong? She attacked Endeavor during the festival, could she have been behind the USJ Attack too? It would make sense, someone with blood like hers would definitely help the league of villains attack." You frowned, is that what people think of me? I knew they might not like me, but...Hizashi was ready to jump to his feet and give the pompous reporter a piece of his mind. Kayama put her hand on his shoulder and pushed him back into his seat, motioning towards Aizawa. He had a cold, unreadable look in his eyes.
"To think she was responsible for the USJ attack is illogical and completely irrational. [Name] fought like a hero, she risked her life to protect her classmates and I. If it weren't for her, I'd most likely be dead along with many of her classmates." His voice resonated through the microphone with clarity. Although Aizawa was not loud or flashy, when he spoke it seemed to make people listen. "And endeavor's case is a special one, rest assured it was warranted."
His tired, bloodshot eyes were not lidded, they were alert and determined. It made people look at him for once, perhaps out of fear or something else, it didn't matter. If they were going to listen, he was going to talk and shut down the stupid reporters so he could get the hell out of the interview.
"Why should one student get special treatment, when other villains commit crimes such as hers they are locked away, what warrant does she have to become a hero?" It was a valid question, there were many who tried and failed to go to hero schools like UA so what made you, some child of mercenaries, any more special than the rest of them.
"[Name] was a child when she was rescued, she was brainwashed by the teachings of her parents. She knew nothing but death and pain and forced herself to submit to the rules of her parents or face punishment. Her missing arm, that was nothing more than a punishment by her parents. You cannot blame a child for doing whatever it took to merely survive. She does not get any special treatment, she has to work just as hard, if not harder to prove herself as worthy to be a hero. [Name] Aizawa is a good kid and is going to be an even better hero. Put aside your fears of her, place your faith in me, in UA, to turn this once misguided child into a hero that will protect you all. As her adoptive father, I take responsibility for any and all of her actions."
At the drop of your new last name, the reporters went wild with questions about the adoption and why...none of which Aizawa answered. It didn't matter though, he said it on live tv and now the whole world would know of you as [Name] Aizawa, Eraserhead's daughter. The stupid smile you had on was impossibly bright.
"LISTEN UP!" Mic's voice echoed throughout the room. All attention turned to him. "I've known [Name] since she was rescued. I taught her things and watched her grow, but I didn't know her when she was a mercenary so I can't say for certain what she was like. However, even when she was an active member of the Tenshi family, I know she was not a bad kid."
Mic held up his phone. "After the sports festival, there were so many listeners out there tuning in to my radio show. With my obvious support of my little cyborg, I got a few callers calling in about her. However, there is one all you need to listen to. Are you ready??" When nobody cheered he sighed and pressed play, holding the speaker to the microphone.
"Hi, uh so [Name] Tenshi, you know...she...right?" A thickly accented feminine voice using poor google translate spoke through the receiver.
"Of course my American listener!" There was an obvious sigh of relief when Present Mic spoke in English to the girl. The recording had everyone intrigued, including you.
"Well then could you thank her for me? My name is Sammy, she might not remember but when I was a kid I was caught in human trafficking and was going to be sold away, but [Name]...uh Tenshi...she saved all of us. She killed the men and their leader who were selling us and saved my life. She's my hero. Actually, she's heroes to all of us she saved that day."As she spoke, you translated it for the two beside you. Your eyes felt hot so you squeezed Kaminari's hand until he was ready to whine in pain. You were holding his hand though so he didn't dare let go.
You never liked thinking about the past, especially not then because you had lost your first friends soon after; however, hearing someone say something positive about that you, it made you feel good. Even if only a little.
"For those of you not fluent in English, the girl, Sammy, said that she wants to thank [Name] for saving her. They were caught in human trafficking and even if [Name] was an assassin at the time, she still saved so many of those kids. She is their hero."
"Now if you'll excuse us, we have classes to get to!" Nezu clapped happily. All of the professors stood and bowed. "Thank you for your time!" All that was left was for the public to make their own opinions of you.
"One more question!"
"Principal Nezu!"
"Present Mic!"
"Eraserhead!"
"Eraserhead!"
"Midnight look here!"
"Eraserhead! Over Here!"
"Principal Nezu!"
*^*^*
You walked into class with Kaminari and were immediately swarmed by a few of your classmates. "Woah, [Name] you're a total badass." Sero gave you a cheesy thumbs up which Kirishima copied with a lot more enthusiasm.
"Thanks I guess."
"You're so manly!" You wouldn't have been surprised if the redhead cried again at such an impressive show of manliness.
Hagakure hugged you tightly. Pulling away, she put her hands on your shoulders and you made 'eye contact'. "You're so brave, you were caught up in human trafficking and stopped it! I'd have peed myself I'd be so scared!" You could feel the dramatic shiver than ran through her at the thought.
"I agree with Hagakure." "Me too!" Momo responded politely at the same time as Uraraka's bubbly agreement. Your cheeks began to feel hot, all this attention for being called a hero...it was embarrassing.
"Same." Jiro piped up, giving you a cool and slightly impressed smirk. You felt undeserving of the praise, at that time you weren't acting to be a hero and you definitely let just as many people die as who lived...but to know that some good came out of a time that was so dark for you, it made you feel good. To know that even at least one person thought of you as a hero, even if you didn't think like that about yourself, it made the smallest bit of confidence swell in your chest. Maybe I can do this, if I did it even back then, I really should be able to do it now.
"You're such a babe, if you were a boy I'd totally have fallen for you!" Mina wrapped her arms around your shoulders from behind, pretending to swoon sending you all into a fit of giggles. You made a comment about her being straight, based off of Aizawa teaching at least and it made everyone giggle even more.
The boys looked between you all, noticing that all the girls in class seemed a bit more friendly than before. It made Kaminari excited to know you had more female friends, then Hatsume wouldn't be the only female your age to give you advice. He couldn't even imagine how much more cute you would become when hanging out with so many cute girls.
Less than a minute before class was to start Iida came in followed by a breathless Izuku. Everyone would have been more shocked that Iida was late if it weren't for the news talking about his brother being hospitalized this week. When they both bowed to apologize for being so 'late' Bakugou decided to make use of his role as Vice president and take over for the President who just decided to be late.
"Sit your asses down and shut the fuck up!" He barked. As the terrifying class VP, everyone listened to him, class was going to start anyways. Now more than ever you were glad you voted for him to be VP. Before he took his seat too, Bakugou slammed a palm on your desk, he wasn't angry but the look he was giving you was raging with intensity. "Wings, don't let it get to your stupid bird brain, I'm still going to be a better hero than you!"
"Of course not, I'm still waiting for you to back up your words remember?" He huffed and stomped to his seat right as Aizawa slinked into the classroom. His hair was out of the neat-is bun it was in for the interviews and back to its chaotic mess.
"Morning." He grumbled. "Alright, today's Hero Informatics period is a little special." Aizawa paused for dramatic effect like the drama queen he was. If it was another quiz most of your class decided to yeet themselves out the window. If you were in the hospital or dead you couldn't fail a quiz, right? "It's time to formulate your hero names."
"OH MY GOD YES! HELL YEAH! NOW THIS IS WHAT I'M TAKING ABOUT!" The class exploded in excitement, bar the few who were internally panicking about having to pick a hero name this early. You were among those who were quiet, you had never thought up a hero name for yourself and the ones Hizashi always came up with were...not heroic to say the least.
"This is related to the draft nominations by pros I mentioned the other day...the tallies for nominations are as follows." The chalk screeched as Aizawa scrawled out the rankings.
Katsuki Bakugou 3,748
Shouto Todoroki 3,570
Denki Kaminari 425
Fumikage Tokoyami 360
Tenya Iida 294
Eijiro Kirishima 161
Momo Yaoyorozu 108
Izuku Midoriya 37
Hanata Sero 33
Ochaco Uraraka 20
Mashirao Ojiro 4
[Name] Aizawa 3
Tooru Hagakure 1
"Typically the results are more balanced, but with all the excitement this year, the attention was not focused on all of you as much as it usually is." You felt like excitement was an understatement, with the son of Endeavor, a hothead powerhouse like Bakugou, an ex-assassin, and a General Studies student getting in the top 3...it was no surprise many others got overshadowed.
"I got...three. Woah." You were shocked to have gotten any. Because of the backlash you had already received, you were prepared to get zero and to just have trained with Aizawa or something but three, non-faculty pro-heroes wanted you.Aizawa gave you a subtle nod, he was proud and it made you smile like an idiot. Your feathers puffed up slightly, you were preening. Tokoyami was as well.
Bakugou leaned back, his arms crossed and the cockiest smile you had ever seen was plastered on his face. He said nothing but his glances towards you, Izuku, and Todoroki said it all: I WIN.
Kaminari practically short circuited in excitement. "Dude, holy shit, I got the third most!" He jumped up and gave Kirishima and Mina a high-five. You gave him a beaming smile, excited for him. Kaminari was kinda dumb and sometimes lazy but he tried hard with a quirk that was damaging and more difficult to control than anyone thought. His training was finally paying off. The golden blonde went in to hug you, but Aizawa's glare made him stop and give you a high five instead.
"Yeah but the difference between yours and Todoroki's is laughable." Sero leaned back, a teasing smile on his face as Kaminari deflated slightly.
"Don't remind me!" Sero laughed but still gave Kaminari a fist bump. Even if he was slightly salty about getting so many less, he was excited for his friend.
"It was all because of my father anyways." Todoroki put it so blandly, you didn't think anyone could be more monotone than Aizawa when he was tired.
"I-I can't believe it, 37 h-heroes w-want m-me." Izuku was blubbering...again. Did he really expect to get zero? His quirk is pretty strong and he didn't do a bad job during the festival.
"Those pros's have no discerning eye, how could they miss the dazzle of Moi?" Aoyoma, even hunched in despair seemed to have sparkles surrounding him. One day you planned on asking him if that was part of his quirk or if he just carried around glitter and blew it around or something. Hopefully the former because you did not want to spend two weeks getting that shit our of your feathers again.
"I got 1!" It was better than nothing, Hagakure was pumped. Her and Uraraka cheered together at getting any nominations at all.
"I got noooneeee, the power dynamics in this class are so screwed!" Mineta gripped his head, his eyes wide as he looked ready to sob or start a fight. "Even you got some and you break your bones!" He shook Izuku who could do nothing but give him a watery, sympathetic smile.
"Regardless of whether or not you received any nominations, I'll be having you all go get some real 'work place experience'. It will prove to be the most fruitful training in the world of pros."
"So that's why we need hero names, huh?!"
"Yay!"
"Yes. Of course placeholder names are fine, too, but something appropriate because if not..." He gave a smile that chilled you all to the bone. "It will be hell from there." Everyone sat up straight in their seats. His voice was a loud growl, commanding, terrifying.
"The names you pick now are the names you will come to be known by the world! In many cases it will stay that way even after you guys become pros, so my darlings, choose well!" Midnight strut in, her sultry voice matching her sexy outfit. She winked at you and you rolled your eyes.
"Midnight will evaluate your naming sense. I don't want to, nor should I. Just remember, the name you choose projects the way you want your future to end up. Good luck." With that, he zipped up the yellow sleeping bag and dropped to the floor to sleep under his desk. You let out a snort at how stupid he looked.
You stared at your white-board with furrowed brows. Your gaze was so intense it looked like you were urging the name to just write itself. You had no idea what your hero name should be. Something to do with what I want my future to be, something to define me as a hero...You gripped the board harder. What the hell does that even mean?!
Aoyoma chose the hero name "I can't stop twinkling." Tsuyu chose "Froppy." Kirishima payed homage to his idol and chose the name "Red Riot." Jiro picked "Earphone Jack," Sero "Cellophane," Shoji "Tentacle," Mina "Pinky," and Kaminari used "Chargezuma," the name he had been waiting to use since he wanted to be a hero. You didn't want to pick something stupid, you wanted a name that represented you as a hero...but you didn't even know what that was. Everyone so far had such good names and good meanings while you felt stuck. At least until Bakugou stood up there, a smirk on his face as he shouted out "King of explodo-kills!" Mindnight nixed it, and everyone burst into laughter.
"Baku-bro, you should be boom boy or explodo-glands." Kirishima snickered with a sharp toothed smile.
"Shut the fuck up shitty hair!" He raged, stomping back to his seat and pouting furiously at Midnight. Knowing that Bakugo, and even Todoroki, Iida, and Izuku were struggling as well made you feel a bit better. You weren't the only one struggling to find a name that represented who you wanted to become.
You looked away from your blank board and back up to the white board. Your eyes landed on your name. [Name] Aizawa...[Name] Aizawa. You thought back to your life, your quirk: halo, meeting Aizawa, learning about the world, the kids at the hospital, the sports festival, your desire to become a hero, getting adopted. If you weren't born a Tenshi, your life wouldn't have been so fucked up, but you also wouldn't have made it this far, you wouldn't be [Name] Aizawa if you hadn't been [Name] Tenshi first.
You finally looked back to your board, sucking in a deep breath and writing out your hero name. You walked to the front and laid it down, palms sweating as you looked to Midnight for confidence.
"The angelic hero, Tenshi." You muttered.
"Are you sure?" It wasn't a no, that was something. The class looked as uneasy as you felt. Not out of fear but to willingly put that as your hero name seemed crazy to the rest of them.
"Nope, but I am [Name] Aizawa, I am not bound by the name Tenshi anymore. I don't want anyone else to feel trapped by it either. Instead of people fearing the name Tenshi, I want people to feel safe at the thought of Tenshi, an angel. I want to save people with my light, with my wings."
When the cheers started, you felt like you had picked the right name. You weren't confident, you didn't know if you'd be able to change the worlds opinion on the Tenshi name, but you were determined to try. At least, if the people you cared about believed in you, you would be accomplishing your goal.
Midnight gave you a hug, pushing your face into her chest and smothering you slightly. Aizawa, listening from inside of his sleeping bag, smiled. You had grown up so much, they were both so proud.
"That is a big claim, but if you set your mind to it, even a brat like you can accomplish something so great. I love it. This is getting me all excited, I need more! The rest of you, finish choosing your names!" Your firm resolve to pick Tenshi as your hero name, Uraraka's kind words, All Might's faith, it gave Izuku the confidence to choose his hero name as well: "The hero who will never give up: Deku."
Even Bakugou, after being turned down again, stormed up to the stand and slammed the board down. He wasn't going to be the only one without a hero name, and for fucks sake, if you could be Tenshi, and Deku would be Deku, he'd pick a name that was badass and stood for the what he wanted. Both an explosions detonation point and a symbol that he would surpass the #1 spot by becoming the #0, a place nobody reach. "The undisputed best hero: Ground Zero."
A/N: long time no publish, eh? Sorry, things have been crazy, I had to pack up and go home and do college online which sucks and I thought I'd have less work but I have more. Oh well! I'm guessing it has been crazy for all of you too! Stay safe during this time and I hope all of you are doing ok! I'll try to publish as often as possible, most likely once very 2 weeks since I am still trying to finish my other fanfic as well!
Thank you for reading and your support, I cannot believe I have 900 hearts on this story!
