Failure is Definitely an option
You woke up at 7 to get ready for the your first day, rolling over and letting Excalibur, your and Aizawa's small black cat that slept in your bed nuzzle into your cheek before rolling out of bed letting the small creature follow after you, softly pawing at the lower part of your wings. The weather was already warming up for your mid-April starting day and you were glad to be rid of the cold weather. (A/N if you didn't know schools in japan start in spring not fall like in America for all my fellow Americans)
Aizawa got in late last night after patrol and then had to leave to get everything ready for his new class so you were left on your own to get ready and be on time to school. It was a non-negotiable that you were at school ready for class by the time Aizawa entered the classroom or you'd be in a hell of a lot of trouble from him and Nezu, this was a small step for you, it was them showing you a bit more trust. After brushing your teeth and washing your face you brushed through your hair and couldn't find a hairband so you just decided to let the wild mane of lengthy blue locks fall down your back.
You slid your wings through the slits in the back of the shirt and put on the short sleeved white button down, leaving the first few buttons undone and then pulled on the green pleated skirt, tucking the shirt in the skirt. You sighed in relief that this uniform material was a lot more comfortable and breathable than your middle school one.
Your eyes trailed over the jacket and tie in disdain but put them on anyways, leaving the tie extremely loose around your neck so it wasn't suffocating. For the first day of school you know wearing the full uniform is probably the best idea but couldn't bring yourself to fully wear it properly, it would not be comfortable and that would be extremely annoying. Finally you pulled on your black thigh high socks and brown shoes, slinging your bad over your shoulder and walked to the train station munching on some breakfast.
You walked through the giant hallways of UA towards your classroom and when the massive door with large lettering made it into your field of vision, you pushed it open and headed towards the seat that you were assigned in the informational letter that came after your acceptance. Your bright eyes trailed around the room looking for the dirty blonde but he wasn't there yet. No surprise, knowing him he'd barely make it on time. The class was very active, there were people crowding around a green haired boy with freckles, he looked ready to burst into tears and you scoffed at how much of a baby he seemed like.
Who the hell cries when people talk to them?
The red and white haired boy was sitting in the back looking out the window with a disinterested look on his face. You were going to go say something but it's too early to even think of doing any positive human interaction, you need at least another hour before your brain is fully functioning to a 'normal' standard. You walked to your seat and scowled at the hands that were resting on it. The boy sitting in front of you was leaning back and had his hands behind his head resting against your desk while his feet were propped up on his.
You had no idea how to handle this, normally people avoided you at your outer school, or at least out of fear they avoided doing things that could potentially be seen as annoying to you so this was a new one and all you wanted to do was rest your head while waiting for Aizawa to show up. Not really knowing how to handle this situation the best way you decided on the most simple option and shoved the boy off your desk, sending him out of his chair and to the floor.
Right when he was off your desk, you slid into the seat and put your head between your arms so you didn't see Kaminari walk in and the rest of the students who had seen the blonde's explosive behavior earlier gasp. The little green haired boy even covered his mouth in fear for you. Bakugou got up off the floor and grit his teeth, he was seething. What kind of high and mighty fucking extra thought it would be a good idea to shove him out of a chair.
His red orbs narrowed onto your figure and his palms started emitting smoke at the sight of your blue hair and large wings, you looked weak as fuck. Kaminari rushed over to diffuse the situation, he didn't want you kicking somebodies ass the first day and getting in trouble knowing how bad it would end up for you. Before he could do anything the explosive blonde hand slammed his hands on your desk letting off little explosions as a warning.
"YOU DAMN EXTRA WHO THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?" Kaminari grasped his arm to grab his attention, gulping at the fear of losing his life to the wild eyed Bakugou.
"Hey dude chill, Angel face meant no harm so-." Bakugou ripped his arm out of the lightning user's grip and slammed his hands back on your desk.
"I don't fuckin' care I'm gonna kill her!" At the sound of the threat and the feeling of his quirk sending explosions go off, in your half sleep state your instincts had kicked in and you swept your foot at his leg and took him off balance, using the momentum to grip his forearm behind his back and slam his head into your desk. The entire class went dead silent at the swift precise movements you had just enacted, the curly haired Midoriya shook in slight fear and awe that somebody took down Bakugou so easily. Bakugou was slightly in shock.
How the hell did the bird bitch move so damn fast?
You looked down at the thrashing boy in your grip, his stunned state gone and foul language spewing out of his mouth. When it registered that he was a student and not a true threat you let him go and he stood up ready to fight.
"What the fuck was that for, huh? I should blow you to bits." His lips quirked into a ferocious snarl waiting for your response but you just ignored him and turned to Kaminari.
"Why is he so pissed off?" You questioned tilting your head. Everyone finally got a chance to look at you, lidded but curious glittering eyes, tanned skin, large breathtaking wings, slim build, and long blue hair caught them off guard. You moved so aggressively for someone who looked so sweet, they thought it might be a cultural thing since you were clearly not full Japanese. The metal hand was what caught the most attention as usual and it raised many questions about who you were. To gather more information like the nosy teens everyone was, they all listened to your conversation in interest, you seemed genuinely confused on why Bakugou was mad.
"You can't just shove people to the floor [Name]-chan its mean and gets people pissed off. Granted that dude is a hothead but still." That made more sense to you now, people don't like it when you forcefully make them do something.
"Oh." You shrugged your shoulders. "What should I do next time?" Kaminari smiled and rolled his eyes at your seeming innocent question, knowing others would want to know what the hell is wrong with you sooner or later.
"Ask them like a normal person." To your side Bakugou was positively livid and seeing red. You shoved him then had the nerve to ignore him to ask that other fuckin' extra why he was mad, and it made him wonder what in the actual fuck was wrong with you. Before anything else could transpire between the two of you, your knight in a yellow sleeping bag showed up at the entrance to the classroom. He kept the sleeping bag at school because he needed sleep and would get it anywhere and everywhere he could, resting his eyes was a necessity when his quirk caused them to dry out and tire so much.
"If you're here to socialize then get out." His monotone voice rang out and you stopped your talking to look at him as he sucked down the rest of his juice from his spot on the floor. The class whispered about someone being inside the caterpillar and you and Kaminari shared a knowing look at the dramatic entrance your 'hating drama' surrogate dad had made. "This is the hero course." He unzipped his sleeping bag and stepped out, clad in his black jumpsuit and indestructible scarves. Everyone took in his lidded and exhausted look, black messy hair paired with bloodshot eyes made him a sight to see, to majority he was an unknown pro-hero.
"It took 8 seconds for you to quiet down, time is precious are you all that irrational?" He sighed and ran his hand down his face, making pointed eye contact with you, you knew he was mad. "I'm your homeroom teacher Shota Aizawa, pleased to meet you." He stuffed his sleeping bag under his desk and opened a metal filing cabinet, pulling out a stack of uniforms and throwing them onto the ground. "Quickly now change into your gym clothes and head out to the grounds." He grumbled something under his breath and walked out of the classroom leaving everyone stunned at their new 'odd' teacher.
You went in the dressing room and when everyone else made it in, a few girls surrounded you.
"Hi I'm Uraraka, you're [Name]-chan right?" You nodded in affirmation letting the bubbly girl continue her excited talking as she bounced up and down.
"Don't call me [Name]-chan, it's just name."
"How'd you do that to that guy, he's so scary! I mean it was kind of mean but he's not very nice either, he was threatening the other students!" You stared at the brown haired girl in front of you. She talked extremely excited and was very close to you, holding onto your arm as she spoke. She reminded you of a slightly more annoying (and stupid) and less machine obsessive Hatsume.
"He's not scary."
"OH! Wow thats so awesome and heroic! You're getting me pumped up already." She fist pumped into the air, the odd action was a bit weird but it seemed to suit her bubbly personality so you let it slide. It's not even what is important right now, your mind was more focused on what Aizawa was going to say anyways.
"Yeah that was super dope! Finally another girl to help show those hunky guys whose boss!" You looked in interest at the girl with bubblegum pink skin and hair. Her unique look intrigued you and the happy smile on her face was reminiscent of Kaminari's.
"You look really cool." You said as you slid your body into the gym uniform. Thankfully there were large enough holes for your wings to move without being constricted, definitely Nezu's doing. The pink skinned girl threw her arm around your shoulder and strutted out of the locker room with you, Uraraka and a happy invisible girl following behind.
"Man you and me are gonna get along great! You can call me Mina!" You went to the center of the field where Aizawa was waiting, your eyes saw the familiar golden hair and you and Mina went over to stand by Kaminari and some purple balled headed shrimp. Aizawa was giving you a pointed stare once more before turning his eyes to scrutinize over all of the possible students in his class. Kaminari and Mina started talking and instantly were friends. "This guy is kinda a hard ass I bet."
"You have no idea." Kaminari whispered back to Mina, his eyes looking over to your knowing ones. Whatever was next is going to be interesting.
"Today the homeroom teachers will conduct a test of quirks. The guidance meetings today are a waste of your time becoming a hero and I'm in charge so I pick what we do. Got it?"
"Yessir"/"Yes Sir." Rang out among the students, some of whom gulped in slight fear while others were grinning in excitement at getting to do P.E. but with quirks. Aizawa moved Bakugou into a center ring and tossed him a softball.
"Bakugou, how far could you throw in middle school?" The said boy puffed out his chest, his eyes moving to glare at the quivering green haired boy then back to Aizawa.
"67 meters." You noticed how even with the smirk on his face is brows were still furrowed and his ruby eyes were narrowed, he looked aggressive and angry like a rattlesnake ready to attack.
"Great now try it with your quirk. Do whatever, just don't leave the circle." Aizawa spoke monotone as he held a device in his hands staring bored at Bakugou. You watched in fascination as he wound up and launched the softball. Explosions went off in his palm, lighting up his hand in orange and yellow hues, and it sent the softball flying with smoke trailing off of it.
"DIEEE!" His loud proclamation as he launched the ball made you giggle, it's impossible to kill an inanimate thing but he said it anyways. It also made you want to know more about him, was he like you? You weren't aloud to really make exclamations like that but if he did it maybe UA has another child murderer who was in 'rehabilitations' of sorts. That would explain the jerk-off attitude.
"It's important for us to know our limits. Thats what helps us figure out what kind of hero we'll be." Aizawa held up the monitor and it showed 705.2 meters. Majority of the class gasped and looked at the boy in awe while you just leaned your body against Kaminari as you took in everyone's reactions trying to gage why they were so impressed. For some reason people put such high praise on quirks and you were trying to figure out why so watching people around you while someone is legally using their quirk was helpful.
"705 meters, Seriously thats insane!"
"So we can use our quirks, For real!! Man, the hero course is great!"
"Whoa! This is awesome!" At the happy chatter among the students, you and Kaminari were the only two who were silent both knowing what Aizawa's reaction would be. He didn't like when people took hero work so lightly and you both learned that the hard way. He stood watching all of the students and his eyes got more and more narrowed in annoyance.
"...Awesome you say?" Everyone silenced at the slightly intimidating tone and aggravated glare from their Sensei. "You're hoping to become heroes here in 3 years and you think it'll all be fun and games?" His frown deepened before turning into a sadistic fear inducing smirk that had you smiling back at him. "Right well the one with the lowest scores across all 8 events will be judged hopeless and..." Most of the students gulped and began quivering in their boots. "Expelled."
"[Name]-chan you don't think he'll expel me right? He knows I'm serious about being a hero." Kaminari gripped onto your hand in slight nervousness as he gave you a strained smile. You shrugged and grinned at his even more panicked expression.
"You're not the weakest here so it doesn't matter." He sighed in relief.
"I knew I liked you for a reason angel face!" You rolled your eyes and focused on what the 8 tasks you had to do: they were basic strength, speed, and flexibility tests to find the baseline of physical strength combined with quirk use. You knew the expulsion was no joke and that its highly possible Aizawa expels more than the last place person over his years teaching he has expelled over 150 students but only saying last place may actually be the truth for all 20 of you (sorry for all you who like koda but he's not in this story because I still wanted to keep the 20 students rule so just letting you know now that things will be different because of that).
Knowing this, you decided it was the perfect time to test out something: you were basically groomed and 'forced' in a way to go to UA instead of jail so if you completely fail every test what would they do, specifically what reactions could you see from Aizawa, Nezu, and the students. There's also the possibility that doing this makes him not expel anybody, not like you cared if someone did get expelled, but it would be a fun hypothesis of sorts to test.
The first event was the 50 meter dash, there were a few pretty quick students, Iida had engines in his leg and moved extremely fast. The half-and-half, you now know as Todoroki, as well as Bakugou were also extremely quick in their movements. You could have placed in the top of this event, speed was your forte and Yaoyorozu who saw you compete in the recommended exams was interested in seeing how you compared this time but everyone was shocked when you just walked the entire time, earning a solid 30 second time.
Bakugou and Iida were both getting annoyed at how you just walked, one thought you were looking so down on him and everyone else that you didn't even care to try and the other was disappointed in how you seemed to be making a joke of the exams. Everyone had clearly seen you move quickly and you just walking took them all by surprise, many of them were wanting to see your abilities. Aizawa was just trying to figure out what you were playing at.
The second event was the grip strength, you could have used your enhanced arm for an unfair advantage, Hatsume's upgrades gave you a lot more grip strength among other things but you decided to use your right arm instead. Lacking in natural strength because of your hollow bones, you didn't really have to try to fail you just squeezed and barely got a 35 kg. You were impressed with the boy with multiple arms who got a 540 kg. After you not using your metal arm, many of the students stopped paying attention to you wanting to focus more on themselves and the top students instead of the one who was failing. Aizawa had caught onto your schemes and he was sending you not so subtle glares throughout and you knew there was going to be some kind of reprimand later.
He's getting so annoyed... interesting nobody seems to care about me now that I'm failing, is having a quirk that important on deciding the social factors here?
It was time for the last event, the ball throw and there was only the curly green haired boy, Midoriya, left. When he prepared to throw his entire body lit up in a yellow glow and green lightning was spiraling around him, he hadn't used his quirk until now so you assumed he was quirkless or had a quirk not suited for combat like your surrogate father did. A soon as the glow started it stopped and he looked down at his hand in dread at the 46 meter throw. Aizawa's hair fell back down messily to his shoulders and it was finally revealed who he was, the pro-hero Eraserhead.
"Midoriya isn't doing so well." Iida mentioned pointing stiffly at the boy. Bakugou scoffed and his face pulled into the most annoyed face you had ever seen, something about the anger that burned in his eyes whenever he looked towards Midoriya was intriguing, you'd never seen such hate before.
"Well duh, he's a quirkless little shitnerd." Aizawa wrapped Midoriya up in his unbreakable wraps that you knew all too well and was sending him a harsh look.
"I saw it... how you cant handle your quirk. You'd just be incapacitated again. Were you hoping somebody would step in to help you afterwards? Get real, anything you were about to do would inconvenience everybody around you. You're reckless and useless after just saving one person. Izuku Midoriya." Aizawa's eyed narrowed into a harsh scolding. "You can't become a hero with that quirk of yours." Everyone went dead silent, the air was so tense you could taste it. Aizawa was never one to sugar coat things but this was harsh, normally he'd be this harsh as a joke but this was brutal honesty and you couldn't wrap your head around it.
Does he really need a quirk to be a hero?
"You've got your quirk back, give it another go." He released Midoriya and the boy shook his head and wiped the tears out of his eyes, his face narrowing into determination.
"NOW." He yelled out, releasing the ball and sending it shooting. His body was hunched over and he gripped his hand tightly, tears falling down his face. When people cried it was one of those things you hated, people were always so quick to cry and you didn't understand the drive to cry. The times you cried you hated it and felt weak or were punished for it so why should anyone else cry?
When you first saw the quivering and nervous form of Midoriya you immediately disliked him, he was the embodiment of weakness that you'd be punished for, that mindset is hard for you to rid yourself of. But the tears in his eyes as he held tightly to his broken finger, a grin on his face showed you nothing but strength in him. He was told he couldn't do it and he did the opposite and even beat Bakugou by .1 of a kilometer.
"Sensei I can still move!" Midoriya gripped his hand into a fist and pointed it out and it brought a smile to Aizawa's face. You know he was as impressed as you were with the surprising guts of Midoriya, however, that doesn't mean you like him (yet) even the weakest people can have a moment of strength. There was a low guttural growl next to you and you looked around Kaminari to see Bakugou, his cyan eyes were wide and his teeth were bared like an animal ready to attack. His entire body was shaking as he stared down Midoriya. He leaned forward and small blasts shot out of his palms, heating the air around you as he shot forward at breakneck speed.
"What the hell?! EXPLAIN YOURSELF DEKU!" You watched with no reaction, waiting for the inevitable stopping of his attack. He was quickly bound up in scarves and his quirk ceased to work making him growl and pull against the carbon fiber scarves. Something between Midoriya and Bakugou made the already angry boy even more pissed off and you watched and listened closely trying to figure out what could piss somebody off so much. If he really just hated losing, he would have freaked at Uraraka or Shoji but it was only when Midoriya threw the ball that he lost his shit.
Even when you knocked him on his ass he didn't freak out as hard, maybe if you could figure this out you'd be that much closer to actually understanding normal behavior although from the shocked expressions of your classmates, Bakugou was anything but normal. Bakugou was released and his face was scrunched up into a scowl, his hands were shoved deeply into his saggy pants and he stalked back to everyone, people moving out of his way at the dangerous aura he was emitting.
"Moving along...time for the results." He pulled out a remote before turning to everyone a slightly scary grin on his face. "Also, I was lying about expelling someone." All eyes shot towards you and you shrugged in nonchalance knowing you wouldn't have been expelled in the first place. You were slightly surprised he didn't expel Midoriya or Mineta for both of them doing absolutely horrible (for the most part) during the testing. "It was a rational deception to bring out the best in you." His eyes met yours and he rolled them, a smirk playing on his lips.
He wasn't mad at you, he found it amusing if anything, Nezu would have a field day knowing you got last just because you wanted to see what would happen, you always entertained the Principal with how you tested out different things just to see what would happen, it was your way of learning about the world in a format that you understood; there's only so much others could teach you. With Nezu's help, they could play it around to make it seem like you got last to protect the other students from being expelled like a hero would.
A screen popped up and showed you the results and your placements.

"Wow [Name]-chan you really killed it today, I've never seen you do so good! Mei-chan is going to have a field day when she hears of how you botched." Kaminari gave you a fist bump in respect of your complete lack of trying, he also knew you couldn't get expelled and seeing everyone's confusion at your odd-ness was entertaining. Your eyes were glittering in happiness and he couldn't stop staring into them, even without trying you were just so perfect to him and your sense of humor made him love you more every day.
He was talking to you excitedly about placing in the top 10, his golden eyes never straying from your face and he was mesmerized at looking at the way your brows would furrow or how your lips would smile when he talked or explained something to you or you would talk about the fun you had watching people. It was nothing short of adorable.
As Kaminari and you talked, you were fully invested in the conversation. Your eyes studied his face, the way his eyes seemed to shine in the sunlight, how he'd purposely say something stupid to try and get you to laugh, his sweet and boyish charm. He was one of the only people dear to your heart, something about him made you want to be around him as much as possible. When some people finally got over their fear of you, they'd talk but then leave you alone calling you 'freak' for your lack of understanding but not Kaminari, he never treated you like you were stupid, he'd do his best to explain things to you (even though Hatsume usually had to correct him) and even smiled when you said or did something that was considered "wrong".
A/N: Ok so some interactions and more in-depth on you and your relationship with Kaminari. There will def be a lot more interaction between characters in the next chapters! It will be chalk full of them so that the romances and rivalries can bloom. Nobody knows who you are yet but that is going to change very very soon! Enjoy the next chapter will be out soon!
