Chapter 39
The dragon towers over Anna. He stands on the ground, his neck stretching high enough to face her on the staircase.
My little sister pulls herself up. Her knees knock together. But her hands are steady. She wraps them around the hilt of her useless sword and holds it out to the dragon.
I run toward her. "Hold on, Anna! I'm coming!"
Her head tilts toward me. The dragon acts on the distraction and opens his mouth.
Strong arms encircle my waist. Jack lifts me in the air and practically throws me at the staircase.
Black fire spews from the mouth of the dragon. It burns through the air toward a trembling, brave girl standing alone on a staircase of ice.
Fire blasts toward her, but does not reach her. A shield of ice encases the entire area.
I stand over my sister, my hands raised above my head. Ice webs from my fingers. It covers us, protects us.
As soon as he dropped me onto the staircase, Jack flew away. I do not know where he went. How could he leave me now?
I strain under the seemingly endless flow of fire.
I never thought that ice could hold against heat.
But my power is stronger than the fury of this nightmare dragon.
Anna whimpers behind me. She slowly pulls herself up. She wraps her arms around my waist and leans her head against my back.
I am not sure if I am holding her up or if she is holding me up, but we stand together under my shield of ice.
When my shield begins to crack, the dragon suddenly turns away. He roars and jerks his mighty head behind him. He aims his fire at a small figure flying around him.
I drop my shield. Adrenaline drains from my veins. I sag against Anna. I can barely stand. She carefully lowers me to the floor beside Kristoff.
He stirs a bit. His eyes open. "Elsa?"
I wince and force a nod. "I'm here, Kristoff. Are you all right?"
"I think so." He nods.
Anna kneels beside him. Her soft hands brush his messy hair off of his forehead. "I was afraid-" She chokes on her words. Anna leans her head on his chest. "I thought that I lost you."
"You are never going to lose me." Kristoff promises. His fingers caress her cheek. "I love you, Anna. I may not be a guardian, but I will do my best to protect you." He coughs. "Although at the moment I have to thank you for protecting me."
"Elsa saved us both. I did nothing."
"You are braver than I will ever be." I stand up. I press my hand on Anna's shoulder. "Get out of here, please. Be safe." I motion at some of the nearby castle guards. One of the soldiers runs up the stairs.
I focus my attention back on the battle scene in front of me. Jack distracts the dragon, but he won't be able to hold him back for long.
I still cannot find Pitch. Where has he gone to?
How can I help Jack? If only I could fly too. A smile, a rare thing in this place of ice and nightmares, curves across my face.
Ice streams into the air.
I step onto the pathway of ice. I don't have a railing, but I don't have time to create one.
My ice curves around the dragon that is fighting Jack Frost.
The monster throws its head back and screeches. The air fills with black fire. I slide to my knees on my path of ice. Fire dances above me.
Jack flies toward me. "Hold on, Elsa."
Hold onto what? I press my gloves to the path floating in the air. Ice webs over it, strengthening it.
The path of ice lurches forward. I slide along it, my dress catching on the jagged ice.
The stream of ice buries itself into the dragon's chest. I ram into him. For a second, I can feel his hot breath on my head, his scales rubbing against my face.
Then the dragon pitches toward the ground, reduced to nothing but ashes.
"Yes!" I shout, but as soon as the word leaves my mouth, I lose my balance and pitch towards the ground.
