Chapter 13

"I decided that we are going to do something different this time."

"Jack, this is only our second lesson. There is no need to do anything drastic."

He grins. "Anna said that it was a good idea."

I massage my forehead. It would appear that everyone knows my weak spot. Jack knows how to get me to do what he-or should I say, what Anna wants.

"Fine." I check to make sure my gloves cover both my hands and wrists completely.

Jack reaches into the pocket of his blue hooded cloak. He pulls out a ball. It flashes with lights and color.

"What is that?" I ask. I've never seen anything like it.

"You'll see." Jack grabs my gloved hand before I can step away. He whispers something to the ball. Then he throws it at the wall in front of us.

A glowing, shimmering image of a green meadow appears in front of us.

Jack jumps into the image, dragging me behind him.

Air whistles around me. Instead of hitting the ballroom wall as I feared, we tumble down onto soft, green grass.

I lay sprawled on my back, my dress twisted around my legs. Jack's laughter booms in my ear.

He jumps up and swings his staff in the air above him. "This is perfect!" He shouts. Then he looks down at me. He lifts one eyebrow as if to ask why I am still on my back.

But I can't look away from the sky. It is blue and endless and wonderful. The softest hint of white clouds streak across it. Birds flies past, nothing more than shooting black stars against the sky.

Jack helps me to my feet.

I look around and run my hand through my hair. I brush bits of grass off of my skirt. "Where are we?"

"I'm not sure, but isn't it great?"

How did his magic ball even work?

Jack reaches down and slips the ball into his pocket.

"Why did you bring me here?" Nerves buzz inside me, worry mounting in the seconds it takes him to answer.

"You had a hard time using your power in the ballroom, because you were afraid to hurt someone. Well, here there is no one to hurt!"

I fold my hands together. "What about you? I might hurt you."

Jack steps toward me. "You cannot hurt me. Do not worry about that." He motions at the large, empty meadow. "In fact, don't worry about anything and let's have some fun! You need to loosen up."

"The last time I 'loosened up' I froze my entire kingdom. There is more to life than just having fun."

Jack fingers his staff. "You think I don't know that? I woke up with no memory of my past, no recollection of who I was . I was alone and cold. Then the guardians found me." His eyes darken. "I want to find out where I came from. I don't even know if I am from Arendelle or not. My home, even my family, could be anywhere. I want to find them, but I decided to wait and help you first. This isn't a joke to me. I'm doing my best to train you. But you have to cooperate."

"I'm sorry." I dip my head. "The meadow was a good idea, as long as I don't have to take off my gloves."

"That's all right. We'll take it one step at a time." Jack flies into the air. "We have similar powers, but they are not identical. For instance, I don't think that you can fly."

I raise my eyebrows. "I may not be able to fly, but I can create a staircase in the sky." I've done it before.

"Well, not all of us can be this awesome." Jack swoops through the air above me.

"Stop showing off." I yell at him and hold out my hands. Last time, creating a staircase was effortless, but now my gloves get in the way. I still manage to do it, but it takes more effort.

I should take off my gloves, but that is not a risk I can afford. I don't think Anna will be happy if I froze my trainer, on accident, of course.

I shake my head and laugh.

Jack lands onto the staircase behind me. He runs his hand over the smooth, icy banister. "I'm impressed."

"You should have seen my ice castle." I say.

"Maybe I will, one day." Jack shrugs.

My heart catches in my throat. Then he'll see Pitch and the darkness and...I take a deep breath. He didn't really mean it. I should have never brought up my time on my own at all.

"Get off. The staircase isn't done yet."

"Aren't you rude this morning?" Jack laughs. He balances on his staff in front of me.

"Sir Frost, please move."

"Make me."

Fine then. I flick my wrist and my staircase dips down, throwing Jack off balance. He reaches for his staff, but can't grab it as he falls over the edge.

He lands on his back on the grass, which isn't that far below us.

I pick up his staff and throw it down. It bounces off his head. I laugh and finish my staircase. It touches back on the ground. I slide off of it and walk towards Jack. His back is turned toward me as he forms a pile of snowballs.

How very predictable.

I sneak my hand behind him and grab one of his own snowballs. In one swift move I crush it down the neck of his shirt.

Jack yelps and twists around. His arm catches me off guard. He pushes me into his pile of snowballs. The soft mound of snow crumbles under my weight.

My trainer jiggles a bit as he tries to get the snowball out of his shirt. "That is wet and cold."

I pull myself out of the pile of snowballs.

"You ruined my ammunition." He shakes the last bit of snow from his shirt. His bare foot kicks some crushed snow at me. He fixes his bright blue eyes upon me. "You're evil, Queen Elsa."

I lift my shoulders and smile. "All credit goes to my teacher."
