The Greene Family Farm
The ride to the farm went mostly silent for Jack and Andre as neither of them had much to say to each other, wanting to focus on getting themselves to safety of the place Andre was planning to take them to. The sun had already vanished from the horizon by this point, replacing it with the moon which now hung high in the starry sky. The group from the neighbourhood had finally reached the farm after a few hours of driving. They drove by several rows of corn stalks before making a right turn onto a dirt driveway. Shawn pulled the truck over near a second truck that was parked near the fence and Andre parked his cruiser next to his truck. All of them got themselves out of their vehicles a second later.
The front door to the farmhouse opened a few seconds after their arrival and an eldery man who must have been Shawn's father walked out of it, "Thank god you're okay."
"I was worried it'd be bad here, too." Shawn said as Hershel walked over to his son and hugged him. Shawn wasted no time and hugged his dad back as Andre looked at Lee and the little girl, allowing himself to get a better look at them for the first time since Shawn and Chet stumbled upon them in the neighbourhood. He narrowed his eyes at Lee a second later as Jack looked at him with a raised brow, wondering why he looked at the injured man in such a way.
"Been quiet as usual the past couple days. Ol' Breckon down the way thinks his mare's gone lame but that ain't nothing new." Hershel explained, pulling away from his son.
"I wouldn't have made it back without Chet and Andre." Shawn told him.
"Well, I'm glad you had them with you then." Hershel nodded as he shifted his gaze to Chet and Andre and nodded at them gratefully. The two nodded back at him as Hershel shifted his gaze to Jack, Lee and the little girl with the cap, You've brought a couple guests."
"Your boy's a lifesaver." Lee told Hershel after feeling him set his eyes on him, Jack and the little girl.
Jack nodded in agreement, "If it wasn't for him and his friends, then I'm certain I wouldn't have made it out of the neighbourhood they found me at alive."
"Glad he could be of help to somebody." Hershel nodded at them, "So it's just you, your daughter and this man then."
"Oh, Clementine is not Lee's daughter, he was her neighbor." Shawn explained, "Jack doesn't know these two as well. He was found by Andre when he left to take a look around the neighbourhood."
Hershel nodded in understanding and knelt down in front of the little girl who was apparently named Clementine, "Honey, do you know this man?"
Clementine nodded, "Yes."
"Okay, then." Hershel said in understanding, getting up.
"Guys." Chet called out for his friend as he split up from the rest, beginning to make his way towards his new destination, "I'm a' run on home. My mama's gonna be in a snit."
Shawn looked at Chet and smiled at him, "No sweat, man. I'll catch you tomorrow night." .
"Watch out for yourself out there, Chet." Hershel nodded at him
Chet looked at Lee and Clementine and nodded his head at them, "It was nice to meet ya all."
"I'll go with you, Chet." Andre suggested, making his way to Chet's side as Chet looked at him questioningly, "I'll make sure if your mom is alright. This thing is spreading quickly and could have reached the countryside at this point. It would be good if you had someone to protect you from those things on the way to your house."
"If you say so." Chet shrugged his shoulders in response, "I'm not sure if that's necessary, but I could use some company on the way home."
"Do you need someone else to go with you?" Jack asked.
"I don't think so. I'm sure the two of us will be fine." Andre let Jack know that he and Chet will be fine, "I think you should stay here and get some rest. I think all of us deserve it after today."
Jack shifted his gaze between Andre and Chet, leaving himself debating whether he should go with them or not before ultimately making his choice of going with them, anyway. It would be safer for all of them to go in the group of three. By going with them, he can return the favor for saving him back in neighbourhood as well, "I think I'll tag along anyway."
"Are you sure?" Andre wanted to be sure if Jack really wanted to come with him and Chet.
"Yeah." Jack nodded, showing Andre he was certain in his decision as he made his way to him and Chet, "Plus, I think it will be better if you will have someone to accompany on the way back to the farm. Safety in numbers am I right?"
"Alright. I see your point here." Andre replied with a nod of understanding, seeing a point in Jack's reasoning. He reached down for his holster, pulled out his pistol and held it out to Jack, "Take this. You might be needing this out there."
"Okay." Jack nodded at Andre, taking the pistol from the police officer.
"You know how to shoot, right?" Andre wanted to know.
"Partially." Jack replied, "A friend of mine had a dad who owned a shooting range and I was going going there from time to time. Some time had passed since I paid a visit there, though as it was before I started attending college. Even then I wouldn't call my shooting skills anything extraordinary, though."
"It's still better than nothing." Andre nodded in a satisfied manner at the answer, "Give me a second. I'll go get my shotgun."
The dark skinned police officer turned away from Jack and Chet and moved towards his cruiser, intending to get himself ready for their little trip to Chet's house. Jack and Chet nodded at him as they patiently watched him approach his cruiser from where they stood, waiting for him to get his shotgun out of there.
Hershel pointed at Lee's wounded leg, "Well, lools like you hurt your leg pretty bad there."
Lee looked down at his leg to take a look at his wound. He looked up at Hershel a second later, nodding his head at him, "Yeah, it's not doing so good."
"I can help you out." Hershel offered to patch up Lee's leg to which Lee nodded in a grateful manner. The farmer shifted his gaze from Lee to his sons and called out for them, "Shawn. don't you run on in and check on your sister. I want to ask our new guest some questions." Shawn nodded as they turned away from their dad and headed into the farmhouse, "You take a seat up on the porch and I'll go see what I have."
Lee nodded in understanding as Hershel turned away from him and went into the farmhouse. He made his way onto the porch and took his seat on the bench, waiting for Hershel to come out of the farmhouse with a bandage as Clementine, followed him onto the porch. Hershel came out of the farmhouse a second later and with a bandage in his hand and knelt down in front of Lee's leg, beginning to patch it up.
Jack titled his head to the side when he heard someone approaching him and saw Andre walking towards him and Chet, "Did you get your shotgun?"
"Yeah." Andre nodded, gesturing to his shotgun with his head, "Let's go."
Jack, Andre and Chet wasted no time and started to make their way towards Chet's house, wanting to reach it as soon as possible as all three of them mutually agreed on wanting to end this day as quickly as possible. Everyone hoped they wouldn't come across any problems on their way to Chet's house. It was the least they deserved after everything all of them went through today, right?
-----
About ten minutes had passed since Jack, Andre and Chet left the farm together. The group of three proceeded to make their way towards their destination in silence, making sure to keep their eyes open for any possible threats. For now, the group of three was lucky enough and didn't come across any of those things. It didn't made them lower their guard, though. They knew those things could have come out of nowhere at any second.
"Andre?" Jack broke the silence between the group of three by trying to start a conversation with both Andre and Chet.
Andre glanced at him questioningly, "Yes?"
"Why did you become a police officer?" Jack asked, wanting to learn something more about him as it seemed like he and Andre will be sticking around each other during all of this for now.
"I did it for my dad." Andre gave him an honest answer, "My dad was a respected police officer and I always loved to listen to his stories about how he was catching criminals when I was younger. As I grew older, I started to wish to become a police officer just like him and put bad people behind the bars just like he did. When I was old enough to join the police school, I signed up for it without second thoughts."
"How did your dad reacted to this?" Jack asked, "I'm certain he was proud of you following his footsteps."
"I never got a chance to find out." Andre replied with a saddened look beginning to form on his face, "My dad died when I was a teenager. He was mortally wounded when catching a dangerous criminal and died from blood loss before the ambulance arrived at the scene."
"I see." Jack nodded at him with a mixture of sadneses and sympathy on his face, "I'm sorry to hear that."
"I know how you feel, man." Chet offered Andre his sympathies as Andre nodded at him, knowing what his friend was talking about, "I'm certain your dad would be proud of you if saw you using your police skills."
"Thank you." Andre nodded at them with a grateful look on his face, "I hope so too."
"What about you Chet?" Jack shifted his attention from Andre to Chet, "Can you tell me something yourself? How did you and Shawn meet?"
"There isn't much to tell to be honest." Chet rubbed the back of his head, taking his eyes off the path leading to his house to look at Jack, "We're childhood friends. Our parents knew each other so naturally I and Shawn hung out a lot."
Jack gave him a nod of understanding, "I see."
"Why you are you asking?" Chet questioned.
"Just got curious and thought it would kill some time." Jack gave him an honest answer as Chet nodded in understanding.
Chet nodded in understanding, "Alrighty.."
"What about you Jack?" Andre asked, "Can you tell us something about yourself?"
Jack rubbed the back of his head, "I don't think there's much to say about me to be honest. I'm just a normal college student."
"A college student?" Andre raised his brow at him in an interested manner, "What are you studying?"
"Linguistics." Jack replied, "I'm thinking of becoming an english teacher once I'll be out of college."
Chet raised his brow at him, looking suprised by Jack's choice of the job, "A teacher? Really?"
"Yup. I wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember." Jack confirmed it to him with a nod of his head, "How much road do we have left?"
Chet shifted his gaze from Jack to the road ahead of them, instantly recognizing the part of the path to his house they were on right now, "We're close."
"Okay." Jack said in understanding..
The group of three reached Chet's house shorty after. The group of three noticed something off about this house the moment they laid their eyes on it. The front door to the house was wide open. It immediately raised their suspicion, because who would leave the door wide open at this hour.
Jack looked at Chet questioningly, "Why is the door to your house wide open?"
"I don't know." Chet shook his head, wondering about this himself "My mama always locks the house this late a night."
A look of worry formed on his face as soon as he uttered those words. Not caring about anything else right now, he pushed himself into run towards his house. He paid no attention to how dangerous it was and how badly rushing into his house without a weapon could have been right now. All he cared about was his mama's safety.
"Chet!" Andre shouted after his friend as he and Jack wasted no time and followed Chet as soon as he split up from them. He and Jack followed Chet into the house and saw Chet standing in the middle of the room, looking around himself in worry.
"Mama?" Chet called out for his mom, worry evident in his voice, "Are you here?"
He unfortunely didn't got the answer he was hoping to get from his mama. Silence was the only thing he received in response to his worry ffilled calls. He shook his head with a worried look on his and let out a sigh, the silence in his house making him even more worried.
"Chet." He turned around to the source of the voice and saw Andre and Jack entering the house.
Chet looked at Jack and Andre with an apologetic look on his face the moment he set his eyes on them, "I'm sorry for leaving the two of you out there. I just stopped thinking about anything else than checking if my mama is safe the moment I saw that the door was open."
"Just don't do this again, okay?" Andre shook his head, letting out a sigh. He understood why Chet acted in such a way but it was still reckless of him to run into his house without him and Jack.
"What do we do now?" Jack asked.
"We should split up and search the house for Chet's mom. This way, we can check the house faster." Andre suggested as Chet and Jack nodded, agreeing with his idea, "You two will go together and I will go alone." He pointed to his left to let Jack and Chet know which part of the side they should search, "I'll check the other side."
"Alright." Jack replied as Chet nodded to show Andre their understanding of his idea.
Not wanting to waste their time, the group split up and went to check their parts of the house, hoping to find something that could lead them to Chet's mom. Jack and Chet made sure to check every corner of their part of the house, but unfortunely they weren't able to find anything that could take them to Chet's mother. The only signs they were able to find so far were the signs of a fight.
The two stopped dead in their tracks once they heard a noise coming from a closed room not too far from them. They slowly approached the door and heard someone banging their fist against it. The two exchanged looks and nodded, knowing what part of the house they should check next. Jack readied himself to use the pistol just in case if he had to use it as Chet reached his hand out for the door handle.
He slowly opened the door to the room from which all this noise was coming from, "Mama...?"
He didn't got a chance to take a peek into the room because it was when an undead shoved itself towards him, letting out a loud snarl as it did so.
"Chet!" Jack shouted in alarm the moment he saw the undead shove itself at Chet. He reached out for Chet and grabbed him by the back of his shirt. He took Chet out of the undead's way before it could reach him. Chet looked at Jack and send him a grateful look, knowing that if it wasn't for Jack and his reaction, this thing would undoubtedly sink it's teeth in his neck.
The undead stumbled forward after it's target was taken out of it's way. It slowly turned around to face Jack and Chet and snarled, showing off it's rotting teeth to them. Jack raised the pistol and aimed it the undead, remembering what Andre told him earlier this day about a bullet to the head killing those things instantly. He let out a deep breath, readying himself to take the shot and was about to pull the trigger.
He didn't got a chance to fire the pistol because it was when the sound of someone firing their shotgun rang across the entire house. The shell hit the undead straight it in the head, making it's head explode into dozens of bloody pieces and killing it instantly. The undead's now lifeless body collapsed on the floor with a loud thud, revealing Andre to be standing behind where it used to stand a second ago with a smoking shotgun.
"You okay?" Andre asked Jack and Chet the moment the undead's body landed on the floor, lowering his shotgun.
"Yeah." Jack nodded his head, lowering the smoking pistol.
"I'm okay." Chet assured Andre that the undead didn't harm him and glanced at Jack with a grateful look on his face, "Thanks. This thing would have gotten me if you didn't grab me."
"No problem." Jack nodded at him.
Chet turned away from him and began making his way into the room from which the undead came out from and Jack and Andre followed him, the two of them ready to use their guns just in case if another undead was hiding there. What they saw in the room made all of them freeze in their spots. They saw an old woman in her 50's laying on the floor with a large pool of blood underneath it. Her stomach was torn open, leaving her insides visible.
"Mama!" Chet screamed in once he saw his mother laying on the floor of the room with a hole in her stomach.
"Jesus." Andre shook his head at the gruesome scene in front of them as Jack glanced away from it.
"...Mama?" Chet's voice was barely hearable for Andre and Jack as he quickly made his way to his mom. He knelt down in front of her and shook her by her right shoulder in a desperate attempt to wake her up, his voice was so shaky when he uttered another, "Mama!"
Jack and Andre watched the scene in front of them with saddened looks on their faces as neither of them wanted to think what was going through Chet's head right now. They exchanged glances, thinking how they should handle this situation. Jack brought his attention back to Chet a second later, knowing he had to figure out how to convince him to go with him and Andre back to the farm. He knew they couldn't just leave him all by himself. More of those things could arrive at this place anytime soon and he doubted Chet would be able to take care of the danger in such a state.
"Chet." He began as he approached Chet from behind and put a comforting hand on his shoulder, "I can't say I understand what you're going through right now, but you can't stay here. You have to keep living. For your mother."
"He's right, Chet." Andre agreed with Jack, looking at Chet with a pitful look on his face, "Knowing your mother, she wouldn't want you to give up. She would you to keep living."
Chet looked over his shoulder to look at Jack and Andre. He nodded his head at them to let them know he will come with them without saying any words to them. He looked back at his mother and placed his hand on his neck, lowering his head slightly, "Goodbye mama. I love you."
After saying his one last farewell to his mother, he got up into a standing position and walked past Jack and Andre, making his way out of the room. Jack and Andre were about to follow him but a snarl sounding in front of them made them stop in their tracks. They felt how their eyes widened once they realized what was making this sound. It was Chet's mother. She had changed into one of those things.
Jack and Andre exchanged glances after realizing what had just happen, knowing what had to be done. Good thing Chet already walked out of the room because he wouldn't have to witness this. Jack walked out of the room, intending to join Chet outside as Andre came closer to Chet's mother and aimed his shotgun at her. He pulled the trigget and his shotgun fired. The shell hit Chet's mother right in the head, putting her out of her misery.
Andre looked down at Chet's deceased mother for one last time and let out a sigh, wishing things turned out differently than they did. He turned away from her and pushed himself into a walk, beginning to make his way out of the house. He joined Chet and Jack on the porch a few seconds later. Chet and Jack looked at him for a second before making their way down the porch.
As Andre watched how Jack and Chet started making their way back to Hershel's farm, he closed the door to Chet's house, making sure more of those things won't get into it anytime soon and followed them, wanting to return to the farm as soon as possible.
----
The walk back to Hershel's went in a complete silence as no one from the group of three was in the mood to talk after what happened in Chet's house. Jack and Andre thought about asking Chet how was he doing right now but ultimately decided to stay silent, allowing him to mourn his mother in silence. Their journey back to the farm was uneventful as they thankfully didn't come across a single undead on their way back to the farm.
After arriving at the farm, they saw Hershel, Shawn and some brown haired young woman Jack didn't know the name of talking with each other about something but no one from the group of three was really interested in learning about the subject of their conversation right now. Lee and Clementine were nowhere to be seen. They must have already gone to sleep at this point. Hershel, Shawn and the brown young woman stopped their conversation and brought their attention towards Jack, Andre and Chet as soon as they saw them make their way back to the family farm.
"Chet?" Hershel seemed confused by Chet returning to his farm with Andre and Jack, "Why are you with them? I thought you'd be staying with your mother."
Shawn looked at Chet in worry once he noticed a saddened expression on his friends face, "Is everything alright, man?"
"We found his mom." Andre replied for Chet with a saddened look on his face, "One of those things got her before we got to the house."
"We couldn't do anything to save her. She was already dead when we arrived at my house." Chet spoke up for the first time since they left his house in a tearful tone as the three members of the Greene family seemed shocked by what they just learned from Andre, "I wanted to stay with her but Jack and Andre convinced me to go back with them."
"I'm sorry to hear that, Chet. I truly I am." Hershel offered Chet his condolences, "Your mother was a good friend of my family for many years."
"You can stay on our farm for as long as you want, man." Shawn immediately offered Chet to stay on the farm, looking at his friend in pity. When Hershel didn't said anything about this, he realized his dad had nothing against it.
"Come on." The brown haired young woman put her hand on Chet's shoulder as he understood his father's silence for allowing Chet to stay on the farm for now, "Let's take you to the house."
Hershel watched his son and daughter take Chet into his farmhouse for a brie moment before glancing back at Andre and Jack, "Good thing you brought him back to my farm."
"We couldn't just leave him back there." Andre shook his head, "Who knows what would happen to him if we left him alone to mourn."
Hershel nodded at Andre and shifted his gaze between him and Jack, "If you're wondering where Lee and Clementine are, they went to the barn to get some sleep shortly after you two left the farm with Chet."
Jack nodded in understanding and bowed his head to Hershel in a grateful manner, "Thank you for letting us stay on your farm for the night, Hershel."
Hershel nodded back at Jack and turned away from him and Andre before following Shawn and Chet into the farmhouse. Andre and Jack exchanged glances with each other, coming to a mutual decision of getting some well deserved rest after this rather long day without exchanging any words with each other. Jack gave Andre's pistol back to him after both of them came to their decision of calling it a day, seeing no reason in keeping it for now.
The two of them parted ways right after, wishing each other goodnights as they did so. Andre went into his cruiser to get some sleep inside his vehicle as Jack made his way into the barn. He saw Lee and Clementine laying close to each other as soon when he entered it. Both of them didn't notice him walking into the barn, though as they were already asleep. Not wanting to wake either of them up as he was sure they were tired as much as he was from everything that happened today, he quietly made his way to the corner of the barn where he wouldn't disturb anyone and laid down on the floor.
He closed his eyes right after laying himself down on the floor, trying to get some sleep after this long day. The last words which flew through his head before drifting into sleep were, "What a fucking day..."
